Jump on a bike and whiz through a kaleidoscopic blur of glowing leaves at the Galloping Goose Trail. This 55-kilometer former railway line winds its way from the urban back streets of Victoria, through hidden lakes and rocky outcrops of Langford and Sooke, to the ghost town of Leechtown.

5. Goldstream Park

Transport yourself to the lush old-growth temperate rainforest within Goldstream Park as it transitions from green to a soft golden glow. Ancient evergreens sway overhead while returning salmon spawn in the crisp, calm waters.

6. Gorge Waterway

Walk over the still, glassy surface of the Gorge Waterway as you cross the Selkirk Trestle and immerse yourself in a landscape untouched by human hands. Dark green eelgrass and emerald sea lettuce add to the complex color palette here, while lighter yellows and deep merlots ashore indicate fall’s arrival.

7. Lochside Trail

Meandering its way from Victoria to Swartz Bay, the Lochside Trail is an urban alternative to its rural cousin, the Galloping Goose Trail. However, you can still expect to find plenty of fall colors inside the plant-filled corridors we’ve coined as “color tunnels,” which are formed by intertwined, overhanging foliage encircling the path.

8. Cowichan Valley

Head 30 minutes north of Victoria, and you’ll find yourself in the heart of the rural Cowichan Valley. Power down your phone, wander down any country road, and you’ll be greeted by yellow and orange maples and maybe even a pumpkin patch. With countless wineries and farms spread throughout the region, there are plenty of activities to keep the whole family entertained. 

9. University of Victoria Campus

More like a nature preserve than a college campus, the University of Victoria is home not only to students but also squirrels, rabbits, and deer. You’ll find great fall color along Ring Road or while strolling through Cunningham Woods, the university’s 1-acre forested area.

Swing by Seeking Kombucha for a fizzy, fermented refresher. Or really indulge and skip straight to dessert, it is summer after all! If you’re ice cream inclined (like us) don’t skip Bluebird Ice Cream to grab a scoop in a fresh-made waffle cone. 8. Day In Day Out Fest – August 12-13

Follow the thumping bass and soaring guitar riffs to the heart of the Seattle Center for a weekend of killer tunes at Day In Day Out Fest. Some of this generation’s most lauded musicians – from Leon Bridges and Dominic Fike to Bon Iver and Ethel Cain – will be performing all weekend in downtown’s Fisher Pavilion. 1. Space Needle

There’s a good reason why the Space Needle is at the top of our list. In addition to being an iconic feature along Seattle’s skyline, the Needle’s recent “Space Lift” massively freshened the look of the 55-year-old landmark. With a first-of-its-kind rotating glass floor for a peek at the ground below (wave hello to the colorful Chihuly Garden and Glass below!) AND floor-to-ceiling windows for 360-degree views of the Puget Sound, the Space Needle still offers the classic views you’ve grown to love, but a million times better.

2. Chihuly Garden and Glass

Situated directly under the Space Needle, Chihuly Garden and Glass showcases awe-inspiring glass sculptures created by the world-renowned Seattle artist Dale Chihuly. The centerpiece is the 40-foot tall Glasshouse, which is home to an expansive 100-foot long sculpture. Angling for some amazing photos? Stroll through these stunning gardens in the evening during Seattle’s glorious “golden hour.”

3. Pacific Science Center

Spend a whole day at the Pacific Science Center! With a tropical butterfly house (there are more than 800 of the beautiful winged insects inside!), a planetarium and hundreds of hands-on science exhibits, there’s plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Come nightfall, two IMAX screens and one of the world’s largest Laser Dome theaters illuminate the Center.

4. Seattle Great Wheel

Take a ride on the breathtaking Seattle Great Wheel on Pier 57 and see the city of Seattle like never before as you soar 175 feet over the water. (Inside tip: Visit at sunset to catch the sun dip behind the Olympic Mountains in a glowing blaze of color.)

5. The Original Starbucks

While strolling through Pike Place Market, be sure to stop by the 1^st & Pike Starbucks store, also known as Seattle’s original Starbucks. Take a break from exploring downtown and grab an iced latte to beat the heat. You can’t visit the city of coffee without a stop here!

6. Fremont Troll

Hiding under Fremont’s gigantic Aurora Bridge and flanked by a colorful community garden, this concrete monster stands guard, Volkswagen Beetle in hand. Have some additional free time? Stroll around this funky neighborhood to discover other oddities, such as a rocket ship and a 16-foot bronze sculpture of Vladimir Lenin.

7. Gum Wall

Just underneath Pike Place Market in Post Alley, the gum wall is just as eccentric as it sounds – one huge brick wall covered entirely in gum. You know the drill, if you visit you have to leave your own. So get to chewin’!

8. Gas Works Park

With expansive views of downtown Seattle across Lake Union, there is no better spot to spend a sunny day than camped atop one of the grassy hills at Gas Works Park. Grab one of the gas plant equipment-turned tables for a picnic or simply work on your tan and clear your mind while you watch boats drift by.

9. Pioneer Square Shops & Restaurants

Seattle’s founders settled in Pioneer Square in 1852, and many of the city’s oldest buildings still stand in this charming neighborhood. Wander down 1^st Ave and find gifts at Clementines or grab a bite and a cocktail at Damn the Weather.

10. Ride the Monorail Through the Museum of Pop Culture

If you’re looking for the quintessential Seattle experience, look no further than the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP). Hop on the famous Seattle Monorail and ride right through the belly of the Frank O. Gehry designed building, then enjoy an afternoon of experiential exhibits blending music, pop culture and sci-fi.

11. Take a Water Taxi to West Seattle

Cruise across Elliott Bay on a water taxi for a day of shopping and beach-bumming in West Seattle. Five bucks buys a 12-minute cruise, just enough time to grab a coffee and make plans for the day. When you arrive in West Seattle, grab lunch with a view at Hawaiian-Korean eatery Marination Ma Kai, or walk 7 minutes along the water to seafood institution Salty’s on Alki Beach.

12. Catch Summer Concerts

It wouldn’t be summer in Seattle without a slew of outdoor concerts to fill your calendar. Dance the night away to a mixture of eclectic indie, dreamy synth and experimental electronic music at the Capitol Hill Block Party or check out the incredible lineup of artists at Bumbershoot, the original Seattle music festival – celebrating 50 years in 2023!

13. Shopping and Nightlife on Capitol Hill

Looking for fresh ‘fits? With its fashionable boutiques, sneaker shops, eco-friendly retailers and thrift stores, there’s no better place than the vibrant Capitol Hill neighborhood. When night falls, stop by speakeasy establishments such as Knee High Stocking Co., distilleries such as Sun Liquor and all-out parties at Unicorn.

14. Seafair Festival

For the 74^th year, Seafair Festival is back with all of the PNW’s most exhilarating events! Kicking off July 4^th with a spectacular fireworks display at Gas Works Park, enjoy a month-long streak of family-friendly fun. Snag a spot along Fourth Avenue for the annual Torchlight Parade, enjoy the goofy ingenuity of the Milk Carton Derby and cheer on the grit and determination of the Seafair Triathalon participants!

The fanfare wraps up during the final blow-out weekend! Between August 4^th and August 6^th, prepare to be amazed by displays ranging from a Blue Angels Air Show to a thrilling hydroplane boat race.

15. Seattle Pride Festival

Celebrate this diverse city’s LGBTQ community during Seattle Pride! Enjoy a full lineup of events throughout the city – from a jubilant parade to athletic events celebrating the city’s queer athletes. The celebration culminates in the Volunteer Park Pride Festival, which offers a full day of live music, arts and crafts, food trucks and show-stopping performances.

Step Off the Beaten Path – Hidden Spots Around the City

16. Gigantic Hat n’ Boots at Oxbow Park

Undoubtedly one of the more unique attractions in Seattle, “Hat ‘n’ Boots” was built in 1954 as part of a Western-themed gas station, and is billed as the largest hat and cowboy boots in America.

17. Olympic Sculpture Park

Find Seattle’s urban slice of Zen tucked along the waterfront just north of the Clipper terminal. The Olympic Sculpture Park features staggering modern art installations and classic vistas of the Space Needle, Belltown and the jagged Olympic Mountains across the Sound.

18. Seattle Pinball Museum

Transport yourself back to your childhood days of arcades, lights and pinball flippers at this classic pinball emporium. The perfect cure should a little Seattle drizzle blow your way, this amazing museum boasts more than 50 vintage pinball machines that are free to play with admission to the museum. Order up a glass of local beer, slip it into one of the pinball machines’ cupholders and get your flipper fingers ready for some world-class pinball playin’.

19. Kerry Park

One of the city’s most popular viewpoints, Kerry Park aligns the Space Needle nicely along the downtown Seattle skyline, making for a worthy visit day or night. Clear days also reward you with a stunning view of Mount Rainier!

20. Golden Gardens Park

If you love sandy beaches, seaside sunsets and barbecue pits (and who doesn’t?) Golden Gardens Park has got all the boxes checked. Head to the beach and join a spirited game of volleyball or stroll to the northern nature preserve and try to spot the local turtles.

21. Walk Around Green Lake

One of Seattle’s most beloved parks, Green Lake offers a newly reconstructed path around its perimeter, perfect for walking, biking or rollerblading. In the summertime, cool off with a dip at the beach, then wander the surrounding neighborhood shops, restaurants, and bars.

They’ll be facing off against the Blue Jays on July 21-23!)

Spend an afternoon marveling at hangars full of unique, historic and straight up awesome aircraft at the Museum of Flight! The largest independent museum of its type on the planet, the space boasts more than 175 different aircraft from each era. Is it an early lunch? Late breakfast? We don’t care as long as pancakes are involved. Grab the best bites in the city at Oddfellows on Capitol Hill, Sabine in Ballard or at Portage Bay Café, with multiple locations around town — that also take reservations, a rarity for brunch hour!

36. Sip Around Seattle Distilleries

Jump on the craft distillery bandwagon and get an inside look at the inner workings and giant glistening stills of small-batch producers around town such as Sound Spirits, Letterpress and Copperworks — the last of which is just less than 20 minutes walking from FRS Clipper’s Seattle terminal, and available to purchase duty free on the ride home.

37. Dick’s Drive-In

Call it Seattle’s version of In-N-Out, the Dick’s burger is just as famous in the Northwest and it’s still the best deal in town. Keep your eye out for their glowing orange sign around town to stop in and enjoy a timeless meal (seriously, they haven’t changed their menu since ’82).

See a different side of the Evergreen State with a ride in Wings Over Washington’s state-of-the-art “flying theater” that will transport you on an aerial adventure high above Washington state. 5K Cameras and Mushroom VR make for an immersive and lifelike experience as you soar over the state’s most scenic landmarks.

Created in 1946 by Prince and Princess Abkhazi, the Abkhazi gardens are known for their majestic trees and dynamic, evolving plantings. Stay for lunch or afternoon tea in the original home, where you’ll feel like a personal guest of the Abkhazis.

7. Pickle Boat “Ballet”

When the Victoria Harbour Ferries were originally brought to Victoria in 1990, the skippers were amazed at their maneuverability. Every Sunday from May to September and all weekend in July and August, these cheerful little boats put on a fascinating display of beautifully choreographed sequences.

10. Historic Chinatown

Canada’s oldest Chinatown district has plenty to see, we suggest exploring this colorful neighborhood by foot on a historical walking tour. Duck under the immense Gate of Harmonious Interest, stroll down Fan Tan Alley, and discover a maze of courtyards and pathways. It’s easy to fill an entire summertime afternoon here exploring everything from theaters to shops to one-of-a-kind restaurants.

11. Craigdarroch Castle

Take a tour of this ornate Victorian castle, built by the coal baron Robert Dunsmuir between 1887 and 1890, and immediately feel transported to a bygone area. Meander through the 39 rooms chock-full of rich, Victorian-era furnishings, vintage photographs, and some of the most beautiful stained glass in North America.

12. Hatley Castle

Initially serving as a dormitory for cadets at Royal Roads Military College, the stunning Hatley Castle is now a popular filming location for movies such as X-Men and Deadpool. Want a peek inside yourself? You’re in luck! The castle is also the administrative center of Royal Roads University and offers daily tours to explore the lavish interior and notched battlements.

13. Government House

Built in 1860, the Government House is the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. Love gardening? Wander through the grounds’ 36 acres, which are divided into numerous zones according to plant life and garden style. If you need to give your feet a rest, swing by the seasonal tea house for a steaming cup of herbal tea and pastries.

14. Fort Rodd Hill and the Fisgard Lighthouse

Found at the edge of the Esquimalt Lagoon, this lighthouse was the first on Canada’s West Coast! Climb to the top floor of the building to soak in breathtaking views (on a clear day you can see all the way across the Strait of Juan de Fuca) or scamper out to the red Adirondack chairs to snap a coastal selfie.

15. Royal Theatre

An opera house and concert hall designed in 1912, the theater retains its original Rococo/Renaissance Revival style décor. Browse the iconic venue’s calendar to check their array of live performances, an excellent opportunity to peek inside one of Victoria’s most opulent spaces. Just be sure to arrive a little extra early to take a stroll around the ornate, historic theater and grab a drink along the dark wood bar in the lobby!

16. Ann’s Academy

An icon from the mid-1800s, St. Ann’s is a historic treasure older than both The Empress Hotel and the Parliament Buildings. Take time to explore the cathedral, which boasts ornate gold-leaf detailing, original oil paintings, and other relics of the past. You may even stumble across a resident ghost or two!

17. Emily Carr House

Discover the birthplace of Emily Carr and learn more about the painter and writer who was heavily inspired by the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast. The childhood home of Victoria’s celebrated artist, the sunny yellow home boasts enormous arched front windows and pillars framing the front door. Be sure to save time on your visit to explore the home’s vibrant front yard. Packed with foliage and flora, the garden’s hues echo the vivid color palettes of the artist herself.

18. Christ Church Cathedral

Looking like the work of a 14th-century Parisian architect, the Christ Church Cathedral was built in 1929. Open daily for tours, the building’s stone foundation is impressive both inside and out. (Inside tip: Walk the church’s unique, seven-circuit labyrinth on their south lawn, which is said to help spark creativity, focus the mind and leave you feeling centered.)

19. Gonzales Observatory

After originally serving as a weather station for 75 years, the observatory now stands as a scenic heritage building in the Gonzales Hill Regional Park. Around sunset, make the quick walk up to the top for incredible views of Victoria, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Olympic Mountains, Sooke Hills, the Salish Sea and even the Victoria Clipper as she cruises past!

20. Mile “0”

Located next to Beacon Hill Park, Mile “0” of the Trans-Canada Highway marks the start of the 8,000 km (or 4,860 miles) road spanning the breadth of Canada. The fourth longest highway in the world, it is the Canadian equivalent to America’s Route 66 with many quirky roadside attractions along its sides.

21. Trial Islands Lighthouse

If you have a good eye, you might spot the iconic Trial Islands Lighthouse off to the right as you cruise into the Inner Harbour aboard the Clipper. Once on land, the lighthouse is easily visible from Clover Point or Beacon Hill Park’s waterfront. And in 2015, thanks to the work of the Oak Bay Heritage Foundation and vocal support from the public, the lighthouse was granted heritage status.

22. James Bay Neighborhood

Exploring Victoria’s downtown core is a must-do for first-time visitors. However, sometimes it’s good to push beyond your familiar boundaries and discover a new location! Surrounded by water on three sides and with walkable pathways, the charming bedroom community of James Bay is an easy pick. Meander down Kingston and St. Lawrence Street, where more than a half dozen historic properties line the road. All of the homes boast storybook-like details, such as turrets, double chimneys, wraparound porches and spires.

23. Victoria Butterfly Gardens

About 30 minutes north of Victoria, the tropical jungle that is the Victoria Butterfly Gardens & Insectarium is home to thousands of butterflies – some 70 species! Pop into the insectarium and check out the social behavior of a leaf cutter ant colony as they maintain their habitat.

Also known as the Koksilah River Trestle, the Kinsol Trestle is a massive wooden railway trestle that spans the salmon-bearing Koksilah River north of Shawnigan Lake. One of the tallest free-standing rail trestles in the world, the 144-foot high structure serves up views of the region you have likely never seen before.

41. Mount Finlayson

Enjoy the gorgeous ocean view atop the 4 km round-trip trail to the top of Mount Finlayson. Be sure to bring plenty of water, wear appropriate footwear, and use caution – this trail can get very steep!

42. Breakwater at Ogden Point

A spectacular walkway jutting out about 800 meters from the shore, the colorful breakwater is our go-to spot for catching the perfect Victorian sunrise. Snap a seaside selfie at the end, and induce major FOMO (fear-of-missing-out) from all your friends.

43. Mill Hill Regional Park

One of Victoria’s hidden gems, and located not too far outside of town, there is no better spot for a day hike than Mill Hill Regional Park. Make the easy 200-meter climb to catch sight of meadows full of beautiful wildflowers as well as views of Esquimalt Harbour, downtown Victoria and the surrounding hill and mountains.

44. Beacon Hill Children’s Farm

A farm in the middle of the city awaits within beautiful Beacon Hill Park. Let the kiddos get up close and personal with pigs, donkeys, chickens and peacocks. Catch the “Running of the Goats” at 10:10 a.m. and 5:10 p.m. daily and witness a furry, bleating stampede underfoot!

45. Elk & Beaver Lake Regional Park

In the summertime, the Saanich Peninsula is hard to beat. Just North of Victoria, Elk and Beaver Lake Regional Park is a local favorite, where swimming, canoeing, kayaking and water skiing are all popular ways to cool off. Both spots have sandy beaches, perfect for relaxing in the shade or tanning in the island sun.

47. Lone Tree Hill

Boasting one of the best viewpoints on the island, Lone Tree Hill offers spectacular vistas of the Malahat, the Highlands, downtown Victoria and the distant Olympic Mountains. As an added bonus, the hilltop is an excellent spot for bird watching – keep an eye out for bald eagles, ravens and turkey vultures riding the winds!

48. Surfing Lessons

Tofino’s reputation for great surfing is known across the island, and the town caters to surf beginners with a handful of fantastic surf schools. A drive along North Tofino’s Campbell Street should turn up more than a few options for getting you out into the swell.

49. Westsong Walkway

Cross the Johnson Street Bridge and take the trail, just on the other side, to the beautiful Westsong Walkway to the West Bay Marina. Soak up the views from across the Inner Harbour, then take a Harbour Ferry back if you want to give your feet a break for your return trip.

50. Circle Tour

Want to explore beyond Victoria’s downtown core? Pick up a set of wheels at Budget downtown and go for a scenic drive along Vancouver Island’s ultra-scenic country roads. Travel up the Malahat Highway (Hwy 1) toward Mill Bay, taking time to soak in the views along the way. Grab lunch dockside at Bridgeman’s Bistro before hopping on the Mill Bay Ferry across the Saanich Inlet.

Once you’re on the Saanich Peninsula, take Highway 17A to the Butterfly Gardens at Keating Cross Road, and work your way back to Victoria, stopping by the farms on Oldfield Road.

1. Ray’s Cafe

Situated at the water’s edge (practically atop it, really!) Ray’s Cafe is one of the longest-standing spots in town for innovative takes on well-known seafood dishes. Located directly on the north shores of Lake Union, Westward is an ideal spot for outdoor dining with imaginative seafood-centric fare with an unbeatable waterfront view. Settle into one of their classic Adirondack chairs with a frosty pint of craft beer and soak up some vitamin D!

5. San Fermo

The perfect blend of contemporary and classic, Ballard’s San Fermo is a great choice for a romantic evening or an intimate group dinner. Tuck into a bowl of house-made pasta on their charming side deck and you’ll feel transported straight to the Venetian town for which it was named.

Food lover and photographer for Eater Seattle, Suzi Pratt raves, “Inhabiting a historic Pioneer House in Ballard, San Fermo is where rustic meets modern. Main dishes change seasonally with features such as Stinging Nettle Tagliatelle, but you can’t go wrong with the Spaghetti Bolognese.”

6. Bongos Café

Located right by Seattle’s popular Green Lake loop path, this vibrantly-painted neighborhood eatery is the perfect place to fuel up after a scenic stroll along the water. Bongos Café takes their authentic Caribbean vibe to the next level with a woven straw awning and outdoor sandbox seating – yes, you read that right!

If it’s an eclectic menu you’re after, you’ll be more than satisfied with this al fresco eatery. 14 stories above the city, South Lake Union’s Mbar offers up breathtaking views and inventive dishes made with approachable, local ingredients.

Indulge in fresh harra shrimp ceviche or the green pea falafel with spring onion labneh (a Middle Eastern topping similar to sour cream).
