Faile Temple :: Portugal Arte 10

From 16 July to 15 August 2010, the Brooklyn-based artists Faile will display “Temple,” a full-scale church in ruins in Praça dos Restauradores Square in Lisbon. The installation was made in conjunction with the Portugal Arte 10 Festival and will tour abroad. While Faile is well known by now for their arresting, advertising and Pop inflected prints and sculptures, “Temple” marks the duo’s migration from a more strictly visual medium into the realm of site specific environments. While its structure is the ruin, Temple should not be read as a memento or celebration of decadence but instead as one of collaboration and renewal.

Get involved in SWAG arts & culture fanzine!

Following on from early fanzines 'anonymous' and 'misbehave' I figure it is the right time to get something new on the go again :)

So... SWAG is a free arts & culture zine in a limited run of 200 copies. I’m hoping to get a free demo CD in each one and will be 32 glorious pages of your stuff & nonsense... Yes, I need your help...

Original artwork, photography, poetry, comics, editorial or something completely different… I’ll leave that up to you

I’m aiming for a 32 page zine, printed A5 black & white on some nice heavyweight recycled paper.

If you’re featured in SWAG I’ll make sure you get your copy in the post

Welcome to a network of people using empty shops and void spaces across the UK to create temporary pop-up shops, community spaces and arts galleries which support local business by bringing people back to town centres.

In February 2009, it's estimated that about 10% of the UKs shops are sitting empty and the figure is rising to one in six shops by the end of the year, with over 1000 high street businesses closing every week. Landlords letting artists, arts organisations and community groups use their empty spaces see the property looking great and kept in good order, and their business getting some great publicity.

Existing local traders benefit from a revived town centre, with more visitors and a brighter environment.

The users benefit from low-cost space on short and easy-to-manage leases, meaning they can take a bigger risk on bolder, more innovative and experimental projects. And the chance to get a good business kick-started.

Meaning local communities benefit from a better high street. And seeing their town being brought back to life will visit, spend locally and maybe stop other businesses from closing too.

Marketing tips for artists

Some marketing tips for artists that I have been given...

Find a gallery that you would like to represent you and start building a relationship with them as soon as possible. Don't go in expecting to get representation straight away as this will likely be futile. Instead keep visiting the gallery in a friendly way, start by asking advice and asking about their artists. Get to know the owners and when the time feels right ask them to look at your work. Building a relationship will take time, but the gallery is so important as they will be responsible for marketing your work and the better they know you, the more likely they will be inclined to show your work.

Start writing about your work on a blog. You can write on a blog hosted on a network such as http://www.a-n.co.uk/artists_talking or by writing on something like blogger (or even better - do both!)

Join a collective of artists to get into group shows. At the start of your career it will be hard to get a solo show and even if you do, it will be hard to get it taken seriously. Apart from getting shows under your belt for your CV it is also important to get your show reviewed in the press and it will be easier to get a group show reviewed if you are an emerging artist.

If you do get into a show or have a solo show, promote it as much as you can. Send out press releases to local newspapers and art magazines like http://www.recirca.com/ and be persistent. Make your presentation stand out. Journalists and magazines will usually bin most requests for reviews and coverage if they don't recognise your name so it may even take a couple of years for something to happen, but if you keep trying it will happen eventually.

Set up a portfolio website which shows your work and CV. Announce updates to your portfolio on your blog and on twitter and make these updates regular. This will help curators who are scouting for talent to know that you are active and serious about your work.

Speaking exclusively to the Bristol Evening Post, Banksy said: "The people of Bristol have always been very good to me – I decided the best way to show my appreciation was by putting a bunch of old toilets and some live chicken nuggets in their museum.

In March and April, a show of graffiti tags in the south-west gallery of the Grand Palais, one of the top Paris exhibition venues, was a media and public sensation.

“The lines around the building every day were even longer than those for the Warhol exhibition next door,” said Alain-Dominique Gallizia, a French architect who created the show, during an interview.

On 300 identical rectangular canvases, Mr. Gallizia commissioned matched pairs of paintings from leading street artists worldwide, to create a panorama of graffiti’s historical and geographical development from 1970s New York subway roots to modern urban landscapes as far-flung as Australia and Brazil.

There are already some great WOMEN'S ART HATE posters up there and over the next few weeks there will be a proliferation of propaganda appearing on the site. This will culminate in as large a fly poster, billboard and promotional campaign as we can afford. We'll also be calling on Volunteer Heroes of the British Art Resistance to hand out leaflets and lead campaigns.
