Unsurprisingly, the club manufacturers have long offered equipment solutions for the veteran swing victim. But such clubs get less press than sexier topics like movable weights or a square driver head.

So kudos to the folks at Pinemeadow Golf who are busy promoting their new Yukon driver as an anti-slice club.

The premise is simple…introduce a touch (5mm) of offset betwen the hosel and leading edge of the club. In practice, say the manufacturers, it means you have a little bit of extra time to get the clubface squarer to the ball at impact, automatically reducing the chances of a slice.

The driver itself is a standard 460cc with a classic pear shape, titanium face and black graphite crown. It currently retails at around $120, which makes it slighlty more expensive than your typical clone driver (though you get a free headcover with it).

GigaGolf describe their new GX squared driver as a second generation model, with refinements designed to improve on the earlier designs.

These refinements include even more MOI (stability), a new geometric design that takes away the harshness of the initial square drivers and a new face that gives a more chunky sound on impact. Which means the designers made an effort to keep the technological advantages of the square design, but without sacrificing some of the more cosmetic features that golfers need as well.

Customers report longer, straighter drives, which you’d expect. Still, despite the changes, there’s no disguising that this is not your average pear-shaped driver. If that’s an issue for you, you might want to focus your attention on the more traditional clone drivers.

The 460cc C9 titanium driver is a striking color design using titanium and composite materials in its crown. I took a closer look at it back at its launch earlier this year. The lighter crown frees up a chunk of weight that the engineers put into tungsten pads at the bottom of the clubface, towards the rear. One at the toe, one at the heel.

These weights encourage a better ball trajectory and give you more stability. The 460cc and a variable face thickness also mean a suitably large sweet spot.

The KC2 iron set is a rare beast…a set of irons with movable weights technology. Built for forgiveness, you can adjust the weight distribution manually to account for your own swing idiosyncrasies and preferences. Golfers using the KC2 set report much better accuracy, even without playing around with the weight plugs.

Finally, the Ecliptic 3-ball putter is a long serving mallet with a three-ball alignment system. I have one in my bag. It doesn’t look like it came out of a NASA lab, but it’s a solid performer which has held its own despite all the new fancy putter designs of recent months.

New USGA rules now give putter designers more flexibility in face length, which Hireko’s Acer folk have taken to heart. So the CB3 is what Hireko calls reverse engineered.

The result is a face that is shorter than you’re used to, and much shorter than the back and sides of the club. So you have a kind of trapezium frame, with most of the putter’s weight at the rear corners. This is all to ensure balance and stability.

With all that weight saved in the face going out to the perimeters and corners, the theory is that this stability is much enhanced compared to more traditional designs.

Now stability is all very well provided you don’t make it too difficult to hit the ball in the first place. Hireko say the CB3’s shorter face is not an issue. Not in physical terms…it’s still big enough for even the worst players to hit the ball. And not psychologically…it’s still big enough to give you the confidence that you will hit the ball.

There’s a clear white alignment bar to help you set up the putt, too. The putter itself is stainless steel with a soft aluminum insert.

The KC2 Hybrid is an unusual club as it has adjustable weights. You tend to see these in drivers, and the KC2 is one of only two hybrids I know of with this feature. (The other ones are the Command hybrid irons.) By messing about with the weights, you can customize the club’s bias and thus the flight of your shots. Neat.

The Center Cut M14 putter is GigaGolf’s bestselling putter (I own the darker finish version). It has the ring design that boosts stability so well, as long as you’re happy with the non-traditional look and the absence of a strong alignment guide.

The OZZY iron set is very new and features a weight strap at the rear, drawing comparisons with Nike’s slingshot irons. Customer comments at GigaGolf seem to suggest there is little difference in performance between the two.
