The young Geeners showed that Clongeen have plenty to bank on for the future when they accounted for Castletown with real merit at rain lashed St Patricks Park to capture the County U-21 Roinn 1 football title for the first time since 1999.

The defining moment of the a game, which Clongeen dominated came on 43 minutes when our keeper, Brendan Redmond brilliantly denied Donnacha Holmes in a one on one situation, the save helped galvanise the Geeners and 3 unanswered points in the last 10 minutes ensured the cup was heading back to Foulksmills!

The superbly mentored team inspired throughout the field, with the defence being extremely disciplined and efficient, the midfield productive especially Emmett Kent, while the forwards made good use of their possession.

The team was: Brendan Redmond, Shane Cahill, Anton Stafford, James Curtis, Ger Foxe, Enda Murphy, Keith Reville, Christopher Cullen, Emmett Kent (0-2), Shane Kilkenny (Capt 0-1), Paudie Stafford, Joe Casey, Keith Kearney (0-4, 1 free), Jamie O’Grady (1-1), David Whelan (0-1), SUBS Nigel Kehoe, James Curtis, Paul O Grady, Micheal Curtis, Daniel O Grady, Jason Barnwell, Jamie Keating, Kiernan Treacy, Peter Anthony Wall.

A depleted U 21 side showed great determination and will to win as they qualified for the Roinn 1 County Final on Saturday 16th October when they just held out for a 1 point win over St Annes. Two first half goals helped to lay the foundation for “The Geeners” latest success, Jamie O’Grady and an excellent individual effort by Keith Kearney. Clongeen were down to 14 men with 17 minutes remaining of the game but full forward Jamie O’Grady was the saviour as he kicked over a point in the last minute to secure a memorable win.

Winning by 2 pts with 2 minutes to go Clongeen IH after playing some excellent hurling looked on the way to a famous win against Rathnure in New Ross, then one of the most bizarre referring decisions you will see in Ireland this year snatched away a win. Rathnure got a 65, which subsequently went wide, then to the amazement of New Ross, Rathnure were awarded a 21m free? The offence? According to the referee one of the Clongeen players inside their own 21 was waving his hurley! Rathure scored a goal from the free and to make sure of the job the ref then sent off the Centre Back Donal Murphy. After the game the ref maintained he was right and we should look at the rules. Well being inquisitive I downloaded the new hurling rules from the GAA website. There is a new rule 4.19 to be exact “To interfere with a player taking a free puck or side-line puck by jumping up and down, waving hands or hurley, or any other physical or verbal interference considered by the referee to be aimed at distracting the player taking the puck”

Exception

A player holding his hands or hurley upright shall not constitute an interference.

PENALTY – Free puck 13m more advantageous than the place of original puck – up to opponents’ 20m line.

According to the rules Rathure should have been awarded a 45m free not a 21m free!!!

A young Rosslare resident was the big winner in the Superdraw which took place on April 4th in the Oak tree. There was an overall prize fund of €17,000 and the top prize of €13,000 or a new car was won by Patrick Brannigan from Rosslare, one of the thousands for people throughout Co Wexford and beyond to support the fundraiser. Gillian Power from Rathnure won the 2nd prize of €2,000, while it was a happy Bank holiday weekend for John White from Bannow who won 3rd prize of €1,000.

There were 10 winners for €100; Frank Stafford, Barntown; John Redmond, Coolree; Owen Lacey, Blackwater; Tom Heffernan, Glenmore; Phillipa O’Connor, Ballymurphy; Muiris O’Loughlin, Marshalstown; Charlie Fogarty, Castletown; Linda Moore, Grange; Cathal Breen, Killenagh; Colin Bowe, Kiltealy. The geographical spread of the winners reflects the thousands of miles clocked by the hard working ticket sellers over recent months.

Congratulations to all the winners, a big thank you to the sellers and the Finance Committee chaired by Brendan Smith for making the Draw such a success to help develop the facilities at Fr Wheeler Park.
