Sigma's Synthetic Kabuki Kit

The Synthetic Kabuki Kit ($56 for four brushes) was Sigma's first set of brushes in their Sigmax collection. The Sigmax brushes are super dense, very soft, high quality brushes that get the job done like no other. Whether you typically use liquid, cream, mousse, mineral, or powder products—or even if you like to switch it up!—this set does it all.

When I first received this set I admit I was immediately obsessed. The brushes are so soft and they work so incredibly well, I felt like I was cheating on my other Sigma brushes. Don't get me wrong, those still have their time and place too, but these Sigmax brushes are something of a wonder.

I apologize for the dirty brushes!

F80 Flat Kabuki

Yech, sorry for the dirty brush!

My favorite way to use this brush is actually to apply my MUFE Duo Mat powder foundation. It picks up plenty of product with just a small sweep, without tearing up my compact and leaving lots of loose residue, and slides across my face. It's heavenly, I swear to you. It easily fits into every nook and cranny of my face, and leaves me with the perfect coverage. I use it every day! An absolute must. (I cheat on my F30 with this.)

F82 Round Kabuki

I also enjoy this brush for applying my MUFE, or my MAC MSFN. Just like the F80, it's not hard on powder compacts and covers any area that you need it for. The difference however is that unlike the F80, I'd say this brush does a better job at blending because the F80 is more of a "stamper". I feel like the F82 can take on circling motions with less impact on the bristles. I haven't tried it yet, but I think this would also be good for applying blush.

F84 Angled Kabuki

If you've read other reviews on these brushes, you might have read that the F84 deposits too much product to be used as an every day blush brush, but I assure you I haven't found that to be the case. It's true that it definitely picks up more product than the F40, but since I seem to be blessed?/cursed? with a light hand, it's really no trouble at all. I wouldn't say it's replaced my F40, however. I still prefer those for my more pigmented blushes, just in case I do get a little heavy handed.

If you're fair skinned like me, I wouldn't recommend this for applying bronzer. Since it picks up more product and is thicker than brushes like the F40, it's too easy to muddy my face.

F86 Tapered Kabuki

This one also needs a bath, sorry!

Even though I really like this brush, even I'll admit it's... weird. I considered not purchasing this brush because I couldn't imagine a use for it, however I do actually use it every day! I've found it's perfect for blending under eye concealer, because it's very soft and doesn't poke my under eye area like the F70. Also, because it's so large, it gets the job done so much faster than any other concealer brush, and it also doesn't waste product like blending with my finger does.

All in all, I highly recommend this entire kit. All the brushes are fantastic and completely unbeatable. Because I love them so much, I really hope to purchase the synthetic eye kit as well. :)

Urban Decay Bourbon, Whiskey, & Zero

Everyone's heard all about Urban Decay's 24-7 liners, so I don't think I need to explain. I'll just share with you the three I have and wear regularly. I own a couple full sized Bourbon liners, and I only own the double ended version of Whiskey/Zero from the Naked palette, but I would like to have the full sizes when they run out!

Bourbon, Whiskey, Zero

Bourbon is a medium dark brown with gold glitter. The glitter is quite small as well—the swatch above is very enlarged—so I find this liner actually quite wearable for any situation despite it having glitter. It's great on its own too, and the creamy consistency makes a quick and easy look on days when you're in a rush.

Whiskey is actually my favorite. It's slightly darker than Bourbon, and has a sheen to it that I really like. It's not frosted but it's not quite a flat brown either. I wear this liner nearly every day! Unfortunately this color is no longer available. I plan on replacing it with Demolition in the future, if I can't get my hands on it somehow.

Zero is a flat black, and while I don't actually prefer to use this to line my upper lid, I love it for tight lining. It goes on quickly and easily, doesn't irritate my eyes, or flake like I've had gel liners do. As I said above, I do intend to repurchase this liner, but I'd also like to try Perversion which is supposed to be even darker than Zero.

Besides Demolition and Perversion, I'm also interested in trying Yeyo, Electric, and Ransom.

Essie French Affair

Essie French Affair is a beautiful cool based pink. It's quite a bright pink, especially with darker skin tones, but I find it wearable for any situation. The formula is pretty average, seeing as I need two coats for solid color and find that one coat looks messy. It's my favorite pink—that I own anyway!—but it might be a little spendy to some at $8 for .46 fl oz.

MAC Heavenly Creature Mineralize Blushes

Tomorrow morning MAC's Heavenly Creature collection releases in stores! So to commemorate, I wanted to share with you the mineralize blushes I purchased online from the collection. This collection is all about outer space, so the majority of the products are quite shimmery, including these blushes.

Unfortunately I found them nearly impossible to photograph. I reshot the below closeups after I had swatched them quite heavily, so the closeups are more representative of what the blush will look like after some use. I thought it was far more important to have photographs that most accurately show their colors.

Ring of Saturn

Ring of Saturn is a terracotta or dark, dusty rose color with golden shimmer. It's the second most pigmented of the three, making it harder to work with than Solar Ray and easier to work with than Supernova. It requires application with a light hand, and expect to spend a little extra time blending. Also, quite a lot of shimmer is lost from such heavy blending, so when I wear it it's far less shimmery than Solar Ray.

In the pictures above, it appears almost pink-ish when blended out, but I assure you, next to a pink blush like Supernova, RoS is for sure red based.

Solar Ray

Solar Ray is a lightly bronzed peach with gold glitter. This is a great summer blush for its sunny color, which its name surely hints at. Of the three, this is my absolute favorite! It's the least pigmented and very wearable. Because I don't have to blend it out like the other two, the shimmer stays and really shines when the sunlight hits it. This is definitely a "my cheeks but better" blush, and I've actually never encountered a blush quite like it. I think this blush would work easily with any skin tone, and highly recommend it to those who want a summer glow without tanning or bronzer. I really love it.

Supernova

Supernova is a bright fuchsia with gold glitter. Out of the three, it's by far the most pigmented and vibrant. It's difficult to not get clown cheeks with this blush. I actually have to pat my facial powder over it to make it wearable. Granted, I do prefer subtle blush. I'd recommend this for those who are more daring or those who have a darker skin tone. But personally I may not be reaching for this blush often, even though it's a beautiful color, because it takes much more effort to make it work on my NW15 skin.

Stratus is the fourth blush in the collection, but I didn't purchase Stratus because in all the swatch photos I saw, I couldn't imagine the color suiting me at all. It's a deep, plum brown so it's not even useable as a bronzer. I'm very sure it'd look very muddy on my NW15 cheeks. If you're fair skinned and rock Stratus, tell me about it!

Maybelline The Colossal Mascara

When I find a product I love, I rarely venture out and try something different. This is especially true with mascara; I've been using Maybelline's Lash Blast Fusion since it was released! But this month when my tube was running dry, I picked up Maybelline's The Colossal which retails between $5 to $9 for .27 oz.

Unfortunately I was nearly immediately disappointed. I love how it feels when I start applying it; it goes on my lashes smoothly and doesn't clump. But then it's as if something happens with the formula as it starts to dry, and the lashes pull together and it loses the feathered look. I don't particularly like the brush either. While the overall shape is exactly the way I like my mascara wands, it feels too flimsy; I like a brush that's firm and combs through my lashes rather than "painting" them.

I do have to say though that the results aren't bad. I've used worse mascaras. I just feel like I have to be especially careful with the application, and it doesn't give me the fullness and length I'm looking for. I won't be repurchasing but I will attempt to finish the tube.

Sigma 12 Piece Professional Brush Set Part 2

Today I'll wrap up with the eye brushes from Sigma's now retired 12 Piece Professional brush set. If you haven't yet, you should read part one for the face brushes.

Eye Brushes

E55 Eye Shading (SS239)

This shadow brush is fantastic for packing on color to the lid, and even the crease because the bristles are quite dense and narrowly packed. For the same reasons, it's not good for blending, however. This is definitely a standard if you're building a brush set, so be sure to pick one up.

E70 Medium Angled Shading (SS275)

This angled brush is soft and does the job, but to be honest I only reach for it when I've run out of clean brushes. It's too flimsy for me to properly apply to the lid, and its best use is for applying a brow highlight. But, I often just use another brush for that task.

E30 Pencil (SS219)

Another brush I rarely reach for, but it definitely has its use if you're into cut crease looks or targeting the outer V of the lid. It's very precise and packs on color, I just need more practice with it and those type of looks.

E40 Tapered Blending (SS224)

My absolute favorite brush of all time. This thing is a godsend, a holy grail. I use it nearly every day because it's perfect for any type of look; natural everyday shadow or heavier, night time eyes. It makes blending a breeze and I cannot do makeup without it, I swear. Buy this brush!

E60 Large Shader (SS252)

Like the E70, this brush is just too flimsy for me. It's not sturdy enough to apply shadow the way I'd like, and not fluffy enough to be a blending brush. Sigma recommends it to be used with cream shadows, which I don't use, but can see how this would be the right tool for the job.

E05 Eye Liner (SS209)

Advertised as an liner brush, I actually use this as a lip brush... As a liner brush, it does apply gel liners well but requires a more experienced hand. As a lip brush, well, it's perfect for the job. Soft and large enough to pick up enough product, but small enough to apply without error to the corners of the lips.

E65 Small Angle (SS266)

I love this brush for applying loose shadow as a liner, foiled (wet). It's incredibly precise and the absolute perfect liner brush. I'm not huge into gel liners but of course they apply like a dream as well with this brush, so it's another must have for liner lovers.

E25 Blending

Sigma is also very nice to always include a free brush with your order of a set, so I have two travel sized E25 brushes now. This brush is best used for blending, as its name suggests. I've found that if I try using it to apply shadow, it's quite messy because this brush doesn't allow precise control. Great freebee. :)

In conclusion, I highly recommend Sigma brushes for anyone searching for the perfect brush. Whether you're a beginner and searching for a kit, or more experienced, they have a brush for every job. Although this kit is no longer available, my favorite brushes from it are the E40, F30, F40, E55, and E65. What are your favorite brushes?

Sigma 12 Piece Professional Brush Set Part 1

Nearly two years ago I received my first brush set, the 12 Piece Professional brush set from Sigma in pink. Although this set is now retired from the Sigma line, all the brushes can be purchased individually or in other kits. I wanted to review this brushes before getting on to another set I have from Sigma, so let's get on with it!

Face Brushes

Upon receiving the brushes, they have a very strong, chemical smell. It's alarming, but after a wash and air dry, the scent was gone. I've been happily using them ever since, and they've traveled many a place with me as well. All of them have held up wonderfully, so for the price they're definitely worth it.

F30 Large Powder (SS150)

This is my go to when I need a standard powder brush. It picks up product quickly and applies just the right amount, and it's very easy to adjust application to apply lighter or heavier. It's easy on my compacts and not rough on my face. I use this brush nearly every day!

The only cons of this brush are that even after all this time, it still sheds and bleeds lightly when I deep clean it. Also, I find that brush cleansers (eg MAC) cannot remove the residue from my MUFE Duo Mat powder foundation; it needs a much more serious clean with dish soap+olive oil to remove product from deep within the brush.

F50 Duo Fibre (SS187)

This stippling brush is the perfect option if you're searching for this kind of tool. I like it much better than my MAC 187SE. The bristles are soft and clean easily. However, I've learned that stippling brushes just aren't really my thing, and that's not this brush's fault. Personally, I haven't encountered a stippling brush that's dense enough to adequately blend and buff in liquid foundation, and it takes a lot of work to make streaks disappear.

F40 Large Angled Contour (SS168)

My absolute favorite blush brush. Only paralleled by its travel size which applies one in the same, I use these brushes daily. They allow perfect control and easy application of blush, and with most blushes it's difficult to over-apply. The only con to these brushes is that they stain.

F60 Foundation (SS190)

As with the F50, this type of brush is just really not for me. I've used it in a pinch when my other brushes are too dirty, and although it applies liquid foundation easier and streak free compared to a stippling brush, it's a challenge to not have a caked on look. So again, if this type of brush is your preference, the F60 is soft, easily cleaned, and worth checking out if you're in the market for one.

F70 Concealer (SS194)

This brush and I have a confusing relationship. While it does the job fabulously, I have a hard time staying loyal to it. For months at a time I'll use it, then revert to applying with a finger, then back to the brush. My only complaint is that it's too rough on the eye area; the bristles are rather pokey on the ends. But for facial application it's precise and covers blemishes with ease.

June Favorites

1. Lavanila The Healthy Deodorant in Vanilla Coconut ❧ Smelling fresh and clean is important, especially in the summer when you're running around in tank tops and bikinis. It's embarrassing to admit but I've never found a deodorant that truly works for me until I tried this product by Lavanila. It's an all natural product that's good for your skin and smells great. There are only two things I don't like about it: one, it doesn't apply completely transparent, and two, it doesn't have antiperspirant. Still, it holds up great in the Texas heat and I want to get the vanilla grapefruit scent too.

2. Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipsticks in Airy Fairy and Pink Blush ❧ I was really impressed by these lipsticks! For their price they have a great finish, don't dry my lips out, and last a decent amount of time. I especially love their scent! Airy Fairy is the perfect every day lipstick that goes with any look, and Pink Blush is a vibrant pink like MAC's Viva Glam Gaga. I will be sure to post swatches soon.

3. ELF Blush in Candid Coral ❧ I've had this blush for nearly a year but hadn't tried it until recently. I usually wear pink blush (and have too many!) but have been more into tan, bronze looks lately. Candid Coral is a great summer color because its mixture of pink and orange means you don't have to completely sacrifice your pink blush! Also, the price is fantastic and I'd pay more without a second thought.

4. YSL Golden Gloss #1 I've also had this gloss for a long time but because I don't like gold I hardly used it. Currently it's my favorite gloss to layer over bright pink lipsticks, like Pink Blush. It's the perfect summer gloss because it adds a subtle golden sheen to your lips.

5. Smashbox Corrector in Adjust (green) I have a lot of redness in my face that foundation and concealer just doesn't cover up that well. Because of my skin type, powder or cream stick correctors are messy and don't work. Adjust is the perfect option for those with redness. It blends in well, works as a primer, and can be worn under any type of foundation or powder. At $38/1oz it's pretty expensive but it should easily last a year or more. If you can't convince yourself to spend that much, Sephora also sells a sample size for around $10.

6. John Frieda Frizz-Ease leave in conditioner My hair is very coarse and tangly so a leave in conditioner/detangling spray is essential. The one I was using previously has nothing on this product! Even if my hair dries before I'm able to comb it, this product lets me comb it painlessly. This is seriously a HG item!

Pure Luxe Cosmetics Swatches

About a year ago I made a haul from Pure Luxe Cosmetics. I had only read good reviews and their color selection was too great to pass up. The best part is that they offer sample jars; 1/8 teaspoon for $1. I really recommend hauling the sample jars over their 5g or 10g jars. They last a very long time because only a small amount of product is actually needed to do an eye look, and for $1 each you can get so many colors!.

Overall I really love these shadows but I do have some suggestions which I will get to after the swatches!

Highlight Colors

Dry, Wet: Pure, White Diamonds, PL Asp, Serenity

I will not be repurchasing Pure, because unless foiled it blends away too easily. I hardly touch Serenity either.

Browns

Dry, Wet: Elysium, Enlighten, Whisper, Kaleidescope Visions, Godiva, Jamocha, Intimacy, Virtuous, Cashmere, Luxe, Solitude

I looove the browns! Applied wet or dry they have great pigmentation and are really beautiful colors. You can easily do a natural daytime look or a sassy night look. Also, if a certain tone works better for your skintone, there are so many to choose from.

Pinks

Dry, Wet: Innocent, Pink Pearls, Kitten, Bubblegum, Brat, Charisma, Luminous, Peach Champagne, Froufrou, Rose Gold

Pink is my favorite color but I'm not too pleased with all of these. The lighter, cool shades on the left don't really work unless you foil them so it's difficult to do a subtle daytime look. Fortunately the warmer, golden shades do work fine for daytime.

Blues

Dry, Wet: Hypnotic, Baby Bluz, Tryst, Carnal, Sassy, Shameless, Blueberry, Hippie, Rococo, Peacock, Indigo

Like the browns, these are especially impressive.

Purples

Dry, Wet: Romance, Spoiled, Amethyst, Utopia

I only have four but I do really like these. I rarely do purple looks though.

Green
Unfortunately I gave all my greens away because I cannot pull off green! I forgot one though, so I swatched this lonely one just for you.

Dry, Wet: Ariel

Silvers, Black

Dry, Wet: Hi-Ho Silver, Racy, Black Cat

Black Cat is a suuuuper disappointment when applied dry. Actually, the dry swatch looks even better than it does on an eyelid; in real life it almost completely blends away! If you're wanting a matte black, I recommend using the Sin liner instead.

Liners

Dry, Wet: Smouldering, Sin

I actually haven't used these liners yet. But if you want a really dark, jet black, Sin isn't going to cut it. Obviously they need to be applied wet to work as liners.

In conclusion, I definitely recommend Pure Luxe Cosmetic's shadows but definitely research and check out swatches before you buy; some colors just aren't as appealing as they sound. But if you don't mind foiling often, the majority turn out vibrant.

Hello Summer

Woo it's been forever! I got really caught up in school and now I'm getting into the jive of being a "housewife" for the first time. It's really weird!

I went brown because I was tired of looking at my roots and didn't want to bleach my hair again. Ultimately I'd like to stop dying my hair and just go natural, but my hair grows so slow. :/

1. Tresemmé Heat Tamer Spray Everyone who uses any heat products on their hair absolutely needs a heat protectant. Unnatural heat is very bad for the hair as it evaporates moisture out of the strands and can make your hair look dry and damaged, not to mention influencing breakage and split ends. Tresemmé's Heat Tamer Spray not only protects against the damage heat products can do to our hair, but smells great and doesn't leave any nasty residue. Availability: Drugstore or Retail (Target, Walmart, etc)

2. VO5 Detangle & Shine Leave in Conditioner If you're like me and have hair that tangles easily, it's really important to use a detangling spray before combing to reduce the amount of broken or pulled out hairs (plus, nobody likes hair pulling!). This product by VO5 isn't my favorite, but it works decently. I'll be in the market for another product once this bottle runs out. Availability: Drugstore or Retail (Target, Walmart, etc)

3. John Frieda's Frizz-Ease Smoothing Creme My hair is very wavy and sometimes even curly. Some mornings I just don't have time to run a flat iron through it before driving to school, so I let my hair air dry on the hour long drive. Of course I don't want to be left with a crazy mess that my hair is otherwise. I've had mixed results with this product though. Some days it seems to work fabulously and I can't believe how straight it got my hair, and other days it doesn't seem to work at all! I haven't figured out the mystery yet. Availability: Drugstore or Retail (Target, Walmart, etc)

4. Hask Henna 'n' Placenta This deep conditioner probably sounds completely disgusting, but it's a total miracle. Made with real henna and animal placenta (don't worry, no animals are harmed!), this leaves my hair so soft and silky. I use it once a week but suggest twice if you're able. Availability: Sally's

Review: Clinique's 3-Step Essentials

Clinique's 3-Step Essentials is a limited edition, sample size skincare set available for both dry or oily/combination skin (just be sure to grab the right box!) with everything you need to transform your face into feeling fresh, acne free, and also oil-free. I have combination skin with an extremely oily T-zone and it's always been a struggle and embarrassment for me. Drugstore products just seemed to worsen my condition, but then I discovered this gem and I won't ever be going back! My skin has never been this clear and I've never had acne disappear as quickly as one or two days. Even though these sample sizes have plenty of use left after a few weeks, I will definitely be buying the full size products.

Step One - 1.01 oz Liquid Facial Soap
All it takes is a dab to wash your entire face and neck. It contains menthol which leaves you with a refreshing feeling—it's great in the mornings when you're still feeling tired. It clears away oiliness but doesn't dry out your cheeks.

Step Two - 2.02 oz Clarifying Lotion
Apply this to your face with a cotton ball. It clears away any left over residue, and the proof is on the cotton ball. It also feels refreshing, but doesn't burn at all, because it contains witch hazel and salicylic acid, which are both great at zapping zits and keeping away redness.

Step Three - 1.01 oz Dramatically Different Moisturizer
This moisturizer is amazing! I've never found a moisturizer that works this wonderfully. Instantly any dryness on my face is completely gone, and I haven't had dryness on my face since I began using this product. It also doesn't feel heavy, which is really important if you're applying makeup over it. I really couldn't live without this product!

Extras:
This kit contains three bonus items that you can add to your daily routine.

→ .16 oz All About Eyes Serum
This roll on serum can be applied day and night. It feels cool and relieving on tired under eyes. I'm unsure however if this product is actually working—I'm a college student and really hard on my eyes, so I haven't noticed anything worth mentioning.

→ High Impact Mascara
I already have a holy grail mascara, so to be honest I haven't even tried this product yet. It's so small though that I'll probably be sticking it in my purse or saving it for vacation.

→ .5 oz Super City Block Daily Face Protector SPF 40
This facial sunscreen has a pretty high SPF which is great for the summer time. It's slightly tinted but mostly blends into skin invisibly. It's also not heavy or oily so it can be worn daily under makeup without issues. :)

Today I originally threw on a tee and jeans and was going to wear loafers. But when I looked in the mirror I kind of laughed at myself. Is this how I want to look? Lazy and generally uninterested in my appearance? Don't get me wrong, a tee and jeans is very comfortable and great on days when you have no time.

As a young adult and university student, it's really important to dress up at least a little bit. You never know who you're going to meet and you always want to give others a good impression. This is especially true if you're wanting an internship or post-grad career! Don't look sloppy. Prove to your peers and your educators that you can be sharp, organized, and on top of things with a first glance.

Personally, it's going to take a while for me to make this wardrobe transition. I have too many tees and raggedy jeans. I'll keep trying my best though!

Also, I recently changed my hair color. In December it was pink, but I realized the upkeep just wasn't worth my time. There are three steps to dye hair light pink! I let it fade out and my roots grew in and it was just horrid to look at. As you saw in my previous post, I was about to dye it all brown, but being a blonde my whole life, I really didn't want to try it. So I got a cut and color at Trade Secret at the North Star Mall. It was a steal at $80!

Have any of you ever gone with a non natural color and had a hard time knowing what to do next?

One: Three nail polishes I picked up yesterday. Sally Hansen #370 Commander in Chic, Sally Hansen Lacy Liliac, & Sephora by OPI
Two: I painted my nails with Commander in Chic. :) It's a really nice-brown gray color.
Three: I need to fix my hair! My hair was pink in December, but I lightened it to just bleach blonde and now I have terrible roots. Sadly, I really don't want to go brunette! I also picked up this Frizz Ease product by John Frieda. I'll let you know how I like it.
Four: I thought I'd never say this, but Walmart has some cute clothes! I was shopping for groceries and my eyes caught these.
