I love color. Every now and then, I try to do the chic dark-neutrals look...and I like how easy it is to look put together in those colors...but it just feels wrong to me. I need color in my outfit to make me feel bright and happy!

This outfit has one of my favorite color schemes in it: purple and red. Occasionally, I go crazy with colorblocking, but I decided to separate the two colors with jeans for a more subdued look. These red heels have been with me for the past few years or so; somehow they add a fun pop of color to almost every outfit. I think every girl should have a pair of red or red-orange shoes to spice up any blah outfit! The head scarf was added for a bit of an unexpected color. I always think it's interesting to add an element that doesn't quite match... (But then again, sometimes I remind myself of that crazy art teacher we all probably had in elementary school...)

Denim on denim: take 6. I added neon socks I got for Christmas to add some color to an otherwise simple outfit. I think it makes me look like I have tennis ball ankles, which is what everyone wants, right? The outfit would've been fine without the pop of neon but I've learned the easiest way to incorporate bold color is into simple outfits like this denim-on-denim look.

For this look, I was inspired by Wendy's Lookbook. Perhaps "inspired" is used too loosely here.. I outright copied her!

This fur collar was purchased at the same sample sale where I got this necklace. I don't have anything furry besides Rosie, but I can't wear her.. She's ~~too chubby~~ a cat. So I was so excited when I saw this fur collar I pretty much dove for it. The way some of the women at the sample sale were behaving, it seemed acceptable.

Turn Your Handbags Into Wall Art by Kristina

For years, my handbags have had no real space to call their own. They've been stuffed into already crowded shelves or thrown into the pile of shoes at the bottom of my closet. A few weeks ago, I asked the husband to hang these rods for me on the wall behind the door and it's been more awesome than I would have imagined. They are out of the way in a previously unused space, hidden by the door when it's open so the different colors don't clash with the room decor, yet I can see at a glance which bag will work best for the outfit I'm wearing.

Any substantial curtain rod will do for this project. I bought these from the kitchen section at IKEA during a visit to Cincinnati. Just make sure to leave ample room between rods for the length of your bags.

The hook will need to have a large knob to accommodate the straps of your larger bags.

Not sure why I'm just now getting around to organizing my handbags, but the convenience of this little project makes me wish I'd thought of it years ago. And it was so easy, too...25 minutes max.

Lately, I've been feeling like keeping outfits really simple. I know Elaine says she's been gravitating toward all black so maybe it's the season or something in the air. I threw this outfit on for New Year's Eve, actually, for dinner with friends. Don't you love how festive it is?! Don't you love my gorgeous backdrop? Yeah, we're still figuring out my hubby being my photographer and we snapped these on our way out and forgot there were trash cans behind me. Oops! True to form, this outfit is a little bit boyish and I stuck to primary colors. I love how the scarf (gift from my hubs) plays off everything in the outfit and kind of brings it all together.

The Dos and Don'ts of Colored Tights by Rebecca

It’s winter time, which basically translates to "stock up on tights" because pantyhose are so boring. (Actually, I don’t even own one pair, and I do realize that I probably should..) But so far, my collection of tights is serving me just fine. However, when it comes to colored or textured tights, it’s not a free for all. You can’t just put them with any ole outfit. I’ve learned a few things over the years that help me work tights seamlessly into an outfit.

Here are some of my main DOs and DON’Ts:

DO go for the monochrome.
Try keeping things in the same color range to keep the ensemble looking seamless.

DON’T wear them as pants.
We can see way too much...and we don’t want to.

DO try different patterns and textures.
When playing with patterns and textures, try to keep one pattern big, with the other small.

DON’T have too much going on.
Heels one color, tights another, a skirt, a top, and a cardigan can create a jumbled look. Try simplifying your look when adding in colored tights.

DO consider the hue.
I had a green pair of tights that made me look like Peter Pan. They made there way to the back of my tights drawer.

And, of course, be brave and be bold.
It doesn’t hurt to give it a try. If it doesn’t work out for you, you have lost nothing. But if it does, you have gained everything. Okay, not everything, but at least you won’t have to shave all winter long.

Can I just pretend to be a graceful ballerina for one day? Because I'm the least graceful person in the world, says my mom and the scars on my knees.

I loved wearing this. All black? YES. I kept it simple with no jewelry to let my sparkly headband speak for itself. It may have been too simple but all black is never too simple. It's classic.

Confession: I hate headbands. I used to wear them 24/7 when I was little so I associate it with being a little girl. I may have watched too many episodes of Gossip Girl because I'm slowly leaning towards them... If you're in a rush, put your hair up in a loose, messy bun and wear a headband to keep the extra hair out of your face and you're all set. Like I said...EASY, right??

Button It Down with Flares

Can you tell I'm obsessed with this necklace? When I love something, I can't stop wearing it. That's when I know my purchase was worthwhile. But it doesn't mean I don't love my one-timers! (One-timers: items I've only worn once and probably won't wear again but can't part with.)

So I've worn this loose button-down with boyfriend jeans before and had to try it out with flared jeans this time. (Skinny jeans next!) Also, I like this shirt a lot better with the sleeves rolled up. Looks more relaxed.

Don't mind my acne....

Tried out a new hairstyle as well. Parted my hair to the side then French braided one side of my hair and then pulled it back in a low pony. I teased the pony to make it full and messy. When you pull your hair back into a pony, it helps to have your hair teased beforehand to have volume.

How To Make a Flower Beanie by Kristina

This will work best if the fabric is silk. I only used 6 circles for this flower because the smallest circle ended up being covered completely by the beads so I left it out. Make your largest circle as big as you want the finished flower to be. My flower is three inches wide.

A little trick about buying beads: Go to Claire's or Icing and buy a beaded bracelet or earrings off the clearance wall in the colors you need. Much, much cheaper than buying a big pack of way more beads than you need from a craft store.

If you prefer the flower to be permanently attached, then skip the pin and sew the flower directly to the hat. I'm all about options, so I prefer to keep the flower detachable in case I want to use it later as a lapel pin, hair accessory, or attached to a ribbon belt.

I've done denim on denim plenty of times on da blog (1, 2, 3, 4) and off. I haven't tried it with boyfriend jeans though until now. I've tested it out before but the fit of the shirt is looser* than I desired paired with boyfriend jeans so I scrapped the idea. I must've forgotten about the loose-on-loose* problem because I was totally fine wearing this and didn't mind the looseness* of both items together. I actually liked it! Isn't it weird? You don't like how something looks/fits one day but later you love it?

I paired this denim ensemble with a gold choker necklace and brown strappy heels to dress it up a bit. I think I'm ready for a cocktail party. Someone invite me!

Also, anybody else lovin' my I "pretzel" philly bag? Now I'm craving a pretzel. It has to be from a dirty shopping cart in a questionable neighborhood. And then you have to dip it in cherry or lemon Rita's. It's the ultimate Philly experience. ..I miss the east. :(

Shellac Nail Review by Kari

Have you guys heard about Shellac nails? I feel like it's getting popular these days. Anyone ever tried it? Well, over Christmas (we stayed in NYC - first Christmas away from "home!") I bought a Groupon and gave it a whirl. First, I'll say this: I love getting my nails done. LOVE IT! In NYC you can get a quick standard mani/pedi for $20. So. Awesome. Anyway, my sister-in-law told me about Shellac since she's super into manicures too. She said it's a new type of polish that is supposed to last 2 weeks without chipping or nicks or anything and it doesn't damage your nails as much as gels. Have you guys tried gels? I haven't, but I guess they file down your nail so it leaves your nail weaker and you have to get gels professionally removed? This is just what I've heard on the street. So, in the name of science and an awesome deal, I tried Shellac.

Exhibit A

I snapped this pic like the night I got them done. (Please disregard my hang nails, etc. Those are not due to Shellac, rather my inability to care for my nails!)

Here are my findings:

Shellac manis take about the same time, maybe a little longer, to get done. We're talking 30-40 minutes.
Limited colors are available because it's a unique formula that is still new so get ready for a smaller selection.
The manicurist will not massage or soak your hands (mine didn't) at the beginning, she gets right down to business!
Your hands will constantly be under UV lights between coats to dry and set them. You will be flipping your hands to make sure they get set from all sides. Mine were like 2 little caves - 1 for each hand and my manicurist told me when to flip and come out.
At the end, because of the drying process and the unique properties of Shellac, your nails will be COMPLETELY DRY! No more worrying about digging around in your purse right after your mani, or keeping your hands safe for a while after you leave. It's DONE. She massaged my hands and tapped on the nail to show me it was really dunzos. I was nervous, but I didn't need to be. These babies were completely fine.

Conclusions/Results:

I am freaking tough on my nails, scrubbing dishes, and doing other things that would normally make lesser manicures chip and wither away. My Shellac mani lasted for about a week and half before it started to chip a bit. I mean a tiny bit.
Everyone will be jealous of your awesome nails and wonder if they are fake, but you get to assure them they are your real nails and Shellac magically makes them look awesome.
I started picking at the chips and peeled off my Shellac easily but you can read about how to properly remove it here when the time comes.

Overall, I would HIGHLY recommend getting this done. In NYC it's about $40 a pop (not cheap!) so keep your eyes peeled for deals but I kinda think it's worth it because of the instant dry, how it looks, and how long it lasts. Tell me your experiences with Shellac!

Belt Loop Secrets by Melissa

I love the look of a skinny belt wrapped about a pencil skirt. It just adds extra emphasis to your waist! What I don't love is a skinny belt that won't stay in place. I don't know about all of you gals but I only have ONE pencil skirt with belt loops. So after too many days constantly adjusting my belt, I decided something had to be done. With little to no skill with a sewing machine, I turn to the next best thing: safety pins!

Keep the pin head on the inside of the skirt and pin it a little larger than the width of your belt and you have a sleek belt look that stays tight against the fabric keeping your belt in place! I usually put one on either side of my skirt. I have never had anyone notice they were there. ;)

Lately, I've been seeing more and more of a newish trend: embellished collars. Have you guys noticed it? I've seen this little detail popping up as accessories and on shirts. I've spied it in all shapes and sizes: studded spikes, rhinestones, large metal necklaces, and any other way you can imagine. So what sayest thou? Yea or nay? Personally, I'm kind of digging it. What I like about this trend is that you can make it your own. Make it as statement-worthy or understated as you like. I love little details in fashion. I feel like those little bits and pieces are the things that really spice up and bring together an outfit.

Now, how to style this thing? Here's how I would do it: keep it simple. Start with a solid color tee or button-up. Keep the neckline high so you don't see much skin - I just think it would look a little strange with a v-neck but maybe you can make it work! Now, layer on your fab new collar (or perhaps you've spiced up an existing top). Next, put on your favorite pair of jeans and some wedge booties and a blazer and you're ready for a night on the town. Keep other accessories minimal for a chic sleek look, have an arm party, or add another necklace to make a statement depending on your outing or how adventurous you're feeling. Shoot. Wish I got a close-up of my new necklace. I don't normally buy jewelry because it's either cheap quality (I'm looking at you, Forever 21..) or out of my price range (JewelMint. Le sigh.). When my friends and I went to a sample sale last month, I saw this necklace for $5 and knew I had to snatch it up! It feels pretty sturdy and for $5? YES. Anyway, enough about my no-see necklace.. I went for color in this outfit. LOTS. I realized I usually go big or all black. And can someone PLEASE come over and iron my clothes?? Mom???

What's Your Size? by Melissa

The other day I happened to be in Chico’s with my grandma. Wandering around with her I found the most beautiful cardigan on the sales rack! What? Chico's again? Man, I really just need to get over my aversion of the store and accept the fact that they have some cute stuff. Anyway, cream sweater, down to the knees, textured, comfy, and what? A size 4! Perfect.

I found the nearest mirror, threw my stuff on the floor (literally) and wrapped it around me…it was HUGE for my narrow frame. What? Did I suddenly pull an Alice in Wonderland and shrink? Check the tag -- yep, size 4. The sales lady watching me (and probably laughing) informed me that their size 0 is a size 4/6 at other stores. So the sweater I was wearing was an 8/10 in another store. Bummer!

Lesson learned: sizes are SO arbitrary! I spent the rest of the day moving from one store to another with grammy looking at sizing. I am a different size in almost every store! I go from wearing a XS to a M!

What does this mean? I have so stopped caring about the size on the tag, no one can see it when I am wearing it anyway. Shopping isn’t about the size you fit into it’s about what size makes you look amazing.

So what stores sizes work best for what figures? Personally, I have found that Express is for the super long, super model, skinny type. Old Navy and American Eagle tend to cater to the average height maybe even a little shorter side (I might be a little biased since most people are shorter than me). J.Crew is for a wealthier crowd which inherently is a little older so their sizes are actually bigger than those at Zara, Forever 21, H&M, Express, etc. Anthropologie sizes are a little smaller than J. crew, and Abercrombie doesn’t have anything resembling a realistic sizing chart. Plus, lots of stores now carry petite and tall sizes!

Been really into big button-downs lately...especially tucking them in the front and letting it hang in the back. Do you think I should have ironed this shirt first? ...HAHAHAHA. I don't iron. What blasphemy. (I'm pretty sure I just heard my mom shake her head at me.)

I feel like this look embodies the desert. Does anyone else know what I mean?? The coral red with the cream and camel.. I don't know. I'm not sure if "desert" was what I was going for or if I drew inspiration from it somehow when I wore this but looking at it now, I see it. I know. I'm so deep.

This outfit also features a couple new things... First, my hair! First outfit pic with my wavy hair. I love it. It's nice to wake up in the morning and not worry about it. Just spritz some hair spray (or none at all - hello, bed hair!) and I'm good to go. Can't believe I didn't do this sooner! Second thing... my new birthday boots! My brother got these for me after my incessant hints on Facebook. Isn't that the only way to communicate with college boys these days? Anyway, to make room for these babies, I am selling my brown boots! So if you're a size 7, take a gander.

Street Style: What are my friends wearing?

This isn't about street style as it is really about proving that I have friends. Real friends. Like Chase can see them. Remember my Jessica friend from here? Make a Beaded Scarf by Kristina

A beaded scarf is a guaranteed conversation piece, whether you're at work or relaxing on the weekend. You'll want to start with a long, woven scarf of any color/print that is light-weight (the kind easily found at Target or Old Navy).

Since most woven scarves are delicate, this row of stitching gives you a strong base to hold it all together.

Use the entire thickness of an embroidery strand. You don't want your thread breaking and sending your beads everywhere.

Pinch the end into a tight ball and wind thread around several times. Make your strands various lengths. I used 25 beads for the first row, 28 for the second and 31 for the third.

You can triple wrap the scarf like this or simply double-loop it for a fuller look. And that's it! Pretty easy, huh? Now go get a scarf and rock your mad sewing skills. =)

Lately the weather here in NYC is starting to get real serious. As in, seriously cold. No signs of snow yet, just that bitter cold that makes you feel like your face is going to fall off. No biggie. AND it's only, December!! How am I going to survive this guys? Well this morning when it was below freezing out, I threw together this navy number on my first try. That's when you know it's a good outfit, when it's easy to put together and there's not much fussing over it. I'm donning my new hat that my hubby gave me for Christmas. He totally surprised me with this faux fur pillbox hat. When I opened it up, it totally reminded me of that one Seinfeld episode, but then I put it on and fell in love with it!! And, bonus, it keeps me totes warm!

After wearing this outfit in the below freezing cold, I think I'm slowly starting to figure out how to stay warm here! Hallelujah!

Taking Care of Business: 3 Ways

I decided to do a little experiment recently and tried to wear this blazer and shirt combo in three different ways. All three outfits resulted in varying degrees of professional dress, which is funny because my office has a pretty lenient dress code. I guess I wanted to pretend I am more successful than I really am.

First, I paired the combo with skinny jeans and heels. This could be worn out for a lunch date or for a more relaxed office. Definitely not too stuffy to wear every day.

1960s Fashion Influence

I LOVE and hate this at the same time. I've always loved so much about the 1960s but the skirts and dresses are so short. So you will have to adjust this look to make it modest.

Drop-waist dress

It has been all about the high-waist lately but if you want to be fashion forward try the drop-waist dress! These dresses have a 1920s feel to it. I can't wait to find the perfect drop-waist dress! I might even have one made so I can get it just right.

Color & Color Blocking

It's going to be a bright and colorful 2012! It makes me happy just looking at this picture. I'm seeing a lot of tangerine orange in the Spring 2012 lines as well as greens and blues.

Asian Influenced Fashion

Incorporate this trend in anything from the cut of the clothing, print, or fabric. If it has an Asian feel to it, you are going to be right on. My favorite part of this trend is the silk fabric!

Anyway, this outfit features one of my absolute favorite color schemes lately - mustard, hot pink, and turquoise. (Don't spot the turquoise? Check out my nails!) I love how bright and happy it all is. Also, I really like this silhouette that I tried out - a bit baggy on top, and form-fitting on the bottom. And last thing: can I just say how every girl should own a pair of nude pumps? They can go with anything, seriously.
