Going Red with the Llisa Spidle at P & H Salon

Big changes this week! My fabulous hair stylist Llisa Spidle invited me to the brand new P and H salon on King Street to play with color. We originally were going to go for caramel streaks, but at the last minute decided to go all red! I hadn't dyed my hair in a really long time, so she assured me she would create a natural look that wouldn't be too drastic. She did a fantastic job and I am extremely happy with the color! Rent Frock Repeat Photo Shoot!

I had the privilege of working with fantastic photographer Nicole, Anne Cayer and the amazing ladies at Rent Frock Repeat the other night. We modeled dresses, skipped around the building and had a blast trying on many different designer gowns. Every girl's dream come true! Lisa and Kristy rent designer gowns for special occasions. Why buy a hugely expensive designer dress that you will wear once, when you can rent it! Love their motto:

A Very Audrey Sunday

Who doesn't love Sundays? Yesterday I went to the Paddington Pump at the St. Lawrence Market for breakfast with a very good friend. It's the best place for a delicious Sunday morning fry up! Afterwards, I did a bit of shopping and picked up a few great pieces. The sales are great right now as they are still clearing out the winter and Christmas stock. I picked up a fantastic bright green sweater from Zara and some super cute heels for the office. I'm still aggressively adding color to my wardrobe and this is the perfect weekend piece. Turtlenecks aren't easy to pull off, but I am always drawn to them. They are comforting, warm and can be great with a pair of skinnies (see below). My friend Anthea also gave me this very beautiful family heirloom necklace as a wedding gift. I love it so much, I don't want to wear it! I felt very Audrey yesterday as I cooked up a glorious one pot dinner and baked chocolate chip banana muffins. The perfect end to a wonderful Sunday. Now, here comes Monday...

Outdoor Wear is Stylish with Comune

Sure I will go outdoors now and then, but every time I need winter wear, I am always disappointed with the selection! Winter wear does not have to be ugly. Love this shoot and video done by Comune for their Autumn/Winter 2012 Collection. The line focuses on subtle and smart details inspired by the natural palate found in the forests, mountains and deserts of California. All of the colors compliment each other and create a feeling of harmony throughout the entire collection. Materials consist of heavy brushed flannels, clean striped henleys and hunting influenced fleece. Funny, they recommend their outerwear for hiking in the San Bernadino mountains. Here are my favorite looks from the Golden Globe Awards. This awards season is going to be a great one, I can just feel it! Last season I was bored with most of the gowns. I remember being extremely disappointed after the Oscars last year. Not this year! There were so many fantastic gowns at the Golden Globes the other night, it was hard to choose the best. I loved that the actresses experimented with color, layers and different shapes. Risk taking is what the red carpet should be all about! Can't wait for the Oscars!

The first session of Ivan Sayers' new Jan.-Feb. course has started at SFU downtown Vancouver! Umbrellas and Parasols was our subject and next week, we'll be learning about shawls, capes and other 'coverings'. Ivan will be displaying a collection of women's clothing throughout history, beginning March 7, 2012 at the Vancouver Museum so watch for that excellent exhibit! What I love about any Sayers event is that he not only brings the clothing and accessories but also has the matching slides, print resources and of course, period mannequins and professional models. But really, something else fascinating is that where ever he goes, an avid following of fashionistas, artists, collectors, photographers and friends follow him. So whether it be a course or a fundraiser, or an exhibit, when you go, you'll always be among friends.

The difference between an umbrella and a parasol is that the umbrella protects from the rain and the parasol shades one from the sun. Both can be practical, beautiful, class defining, intriguing and effective weapons. They are always reflective of history, culture and economic times. Although the parasol is usually more whimsical, lacy, flounced and decorative, the umbrella, especially in black, can be chic: think Gene Kelly, "Singing in the Rain". Umbrellas, tightly rolled, long and slim could make one look sporty and tall, something I will definitely think about as I hoist mine against the grey mists of Vancouver.
Ivan mentioned a couple of book titles:" The History of the Umbrella" and "400 Years of Fashion" and I found "It's About Time: On The History of Parasols and Umbrellas" at bjws.blogspot.com . Also found an umbrella and parasol museum in Gignese. You can find all sorts of both available for purchase online, too. Currently in our closet, we have a giant navy and burgundy soldier that sheltered us at many rainy soccer games, a small, white one with a wooden duck handle, (that nobody ever wants to take) and the classic, slim, black one that we guard carefully because, of course, everyone wants one that looks good with everything. (and works reliably)

Ivan always wears his white gloves when he unwraps the treasures he brings. Think we should get a picture of him with a top hat, (yes he has a collection of hats, too) and a black umbrella, just to add to the Umbrella/Parasol presentation? Each artifact is labelled as to when and where it was purchased. When you go to a museum or gallery, you see the collection but in the Sayers courses and events, you meet the curator/collector, too.
Early umbrellas/parasols had whalebone (from the mouth of the whale) handles and spokes but with the invention of steel, 1850's, thankfully that changed. Parasols often lasted longer than umbrellas because they didn't get wet or mildewed and you can see how those with whalebone, ivory, gold, silver would be very valuable today.

People were looking for the exotic; they could show that they had enough money to buy imported fashions and that perhaps they had even travelled to far off places, like the Orient. Also, women could stay pale (lily white) and fragile (beauty by impairment) and had the time to be out enjoying the country air rather than slaving all day. That special umbrella and parasol could make them stand out in a crowd, no matter that one might have to manage huge dresses, tall hair and hats, at the same time.
Parasols got smaller, as skirts got bigger in the 1830-40's. The idea that women were delicate and fragile, was perpetuated. Collapsible handles and rings on top, made parasols somewhat more manageable, but at the same time, probably these innovations made it easier for women to always have to have this additional accessory.
In the 1860's parasol handles got shorter and stubbier as skirts got more complicated. Bright blue was a popular colour as were intricate designs and beading. While there were many hand made products, machine made designs were available.
1880's brown damask with flowers was all the rage. 1895-1905 - satin and silk, layered and flounced parasols matched the colour of the dress. This was the Gibson Girl look. Handles on umbrellas and parasols became more exotic: nymphs, cats, birds, dogs and more.
1905 Empire Revival - high waist, slim body and revival of all things exotic and oriental. Japanese influence could be seen in Pagoda shaped parasols, hand painted, bamboo handles - unchanged until WW1

After WW1 - umbrella rolled up was referred to as a 'stick' and not a cane. Women strong, had the right to vote. More practical material and less of it due to war time shortages.
Modern day reflections: Umbrellas as advertising, umbrellas as hats, both as house and store decorations, umbrellas and parasols to guard against the sun - umbrellas attached to bikes and dogs, lots of searching for antiques probably a reaction to over use of plastics and mass production. Still an interest in travel evidenced by maps, flags and other symbols and icons. Japanese and Chinese designs readily available. Everyone has access now but so many people that it can be dangerous to walk in crowded places. Umbrellas not replaced by hoods - still a fashion statement. (No one wants to carry the duck umbrella!!!!)

Bridal Shoot with Rue Pigalle!

My wedding look was very different from the traditional bridal look. It was vintage and fifties inspired and the jewelry and accessories truly completed the look and made it one-of-a-kind! Isabelle of Rue Pigalle boutique helped to create my whole look and worked with me throughout the whole process. The end look was completely unique and the most fabulous dress I have ever worn.

Last weekend, I got to be a bride again! Definitely different being on the other side of the production and definitely fabulous. The one thing I can say is that modeling is not as easy as you think! Isabelle is participating in The Wedding Co's show this upcoming weekend (January 13-15). The looks shot last weekend will be compiled into a brochure for Isabelle's showing at The Wedding Co! Isabelle has the most stunning collection of jewelry in Toronto. She carries pieces from all over the world that are truly unique and are perfect for any look, whether it be for a ball, wedding, event or special occasion. Here I am at the shoot on Saturday, thrilled to be a bride again! Isabelle made it the most special day for everyone involved. I absolutely can't wait for this event and to see the final product. COLOR!

I am not going to lie...I have been anti-color for the past few years. I love black. It makes me feel strong, powerful and confident. It is my no fail back up to any last minute occasion or event. Nevertheless it has been brought to my attention that it has taken over my entire wardrobe. I would have to agree. So, I've made it a resolution to force myself to buy some brighter colors this year. Last season was all about color blocking and bright vibrant colors. I ignored it! Never again! I bought a few pretty pieces today at Zara with Anne and feel a little lighter and more vibrant wearing them. Here's to the New Year getting off to a great start! Other resolutions? Del Mar and Hollywood

I am so sad to be home in Toronto and back in the freezing cold! Oh well I can at least remember through the pictures I took! Here are a few pictures from Del Mar, a small beach near San Diego and of course, Hollywood! I loved all of the small beaches in San Diego. They were all very well kept, clean and had plenty to do. I was actually rather unimpressed with Santa Monica, which is just outside LA. It was cold, dirty and far too busy. Funny, I thought I would really love LA but it isn't all it's cracked up to be! Nevertheless we had a fantastic time at Universal Studios' City Walk for New Year's and enjoyed Rodeo Drive on New Year's Day (photos to follow).

I have more California adventures to share! Hubby really wanted to go skiing as neither of us had been skiing in quite some time. We had a decision to make between Catalina Island or skiing. In the end we went with skiing. It was definitely harder than I remember!

Next stop Palm Springs! With rave reviews from my parents, we decided to visit Palm Springs. We were not disappointed! We had a chance to walk down the "Walk of the Stars" and see the stars of Ginger Rogers, Sony Bono, Frank Sinatra Junior and Marilyn Monroe! We also visited the canyons and saw the oases. It was absolutely incredible to walk through a lush oasis right in the middle of the desert. Two very different adventures and our next stop is LA!

I have been in California since December 17th and am having a fantastic time. My only complaint is that it feels like we are always in the car, always driving. Everything is so spread out, there is no way you could get by without a car. It makes me miss the hustle and bustle of Toronto. I can walk, take the train or street car. I also feel a lot more active in Toronto than when I am driving everywhere in a car! Don't get me wrong, California is a beautiful place, it's just too spread out! A Beautiful Day for a Wedding

Well it's official! Here is a photo from our wedding day on December 17th, 2011! We got married in sunny San Diego and had the best of the best to help us on our special day. More details to follow once I receive the official pictures from Jessica Fraser who photographed our wedding. I couldn't have put my look together without the help of Isabelle Fish of Rue Pigalle, Elizabeth of Elizabeth Victoria and Francesca Whyte. Flowers were created by the fabulous Adina's Floral Design. It was a beautiful sunny day with a few sprinkles just as the ceremony ended and a night of fun and entertainment with friends and family. We took some fabulous photos in the photo booth, and had games and prizes too! Thanks to my fashion and event production skills, I was able to stay calm, cool and collected...mostly! It couldn't have been more perfect and we will remember it forever.

the part! My dress was from I miss you vintage and

was modified by Francesca Whyte and styled by Isabelle Fish.

We even had fifties music and our favorite, Frank Sinatra!

What Does the Mother of the Bride Wear on the Big Day?

We had quite a few adventures on Treasure Seeker Colleen's last trip to Toronto, including: wedding dress fittings, fashion week, bridal shows and more. We found her dress for the wedding at 69 vintage and had it fixed up by the lovely ladies at whyte couture. Oh what a fabulous time we had. Well the dress is complete and ready to go for this Saturday along with her fascinating fascinator by Elizabeth Victoria. Elizabeth also made me a fascinator but that is soon to be revealed, after the big day! She wraps all of her designer fascinators in a beautiful box with matching paper. Francesca drew a fantastic sketch of my Mum's final look and it is breathtaking, as she will be on the wedding day!

Gingerbread Houses - A Gateway to Fond Old Memories

Writing for the blog for the first time, Stephen Li, student, chef, musician and fellow blogger!

Rooms full of Gingerbread houses welcomed us to the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver. They were lovingly and very skillfully constructed by Cooking Schools, Businesses, Charitable Foundations and by various lower mainland schools, both public and private. Loved the entries by Churchill and David Thompson, especially! But the first place award (although they all were winners) was titled simply "Waiting For Santa" and was a child's room and toy box containing everyone's most wanted gifts, past and present! It was the brainchild of Vancouver Community College's team and how lucky we are to have these masters graduating into our restaurants, bakeries, hotels, catering agencies and much more! Everyone was delighted to see royal icing, marzipan, rolled fondant, pastillage, chocolate modelling paste, rice krispies, smarties and candies of all sorts, and colours and trees and snow, and cabins and santas and dream houses and oh just go and see it to see the food and Christmas of your dreams! What attracts people to the Gingerbread Houses Display, every year, is not only that they want to see what can be created but also that they may remember making their own houses and tree decorations! Sweet Dreams for all!

Valentino Virtual Museum

Valentino has done it again. Even though he sold his label, he is still re-creating, changing with the times and leading the way yet again. At a press conference last Friday, hosted by Anne Hathaway, Valentino revealed his new virtual application that allows one to walk travel through an exquisite archive of his work. This virtual world would actually span 10,000 square meters in the real world. The cost of the application is free and merely serves the purpose of maintaining Valentino's legacy by allowing all to have access to his work.
