A Polymath—the Greek word for Renaissance Man—is someone who excels in many disciplines. The New Polymath is an enterprise comfortable with multiple technologies and is packaging 3, 5, 10 strands of infotech, cleantech, healthtech, biotech and nanotech to create innovative new products and solutions. The author includes case studies and examples of innovative Cloud Computing solutions acting as the enabling integration platform for these collaborations.

Eight case studies – BP CTO, Cognizant, GE, Kleiner Perkins’ cleantech, National Hurricane Center, Plantronics, salesforce.com, and W.R. Hambrecht – show how enterprises are leveraging a wide range of technologies to solve day to day issues and the “Grand Challenges” the world faces. The book also categorizes 11 “building blocks” these Polymaths leverage–next–generation analytics, cloud computing, sustainability, disruptive economics and others—by showcasing “mini–case studies” of over another hundred innovators, their products and their projects.

It builds on 150+ interviews with innovators in infotech, cleantech, healthtech and biotech. It draws on his innovation blog, New Florence. New Renaissance. which has cataloged over 2,000 innovative technologies, companies and projects in over 40 technology categories from mobile computing to nanotechnology.

Vinnie Mirchandani is President of Deal Architect Inc, a technology advisory firm. The firm helps clients take advantage of disruptive trends like cloud computing and business process outsourcing (BPO) before they go mainstream. Between this firm and previous role at the technology research firm, Gartner he has helped clients evaluate and negotiate over $10 billion in technology.

HP referenced a global survey by Forrester Consulting of 900 SMBs which estimated that the market for delivering on-demand communications services could be worth US$6.2 Billion by 2014. The survey revealed that more than half of the SMBs would welcome “As-a-Service” offerings and 90% were interested in buying bundled multiple communications and IT services. The majority of those polled confirmed that they would look to their Communications Service Provider for such offerings.

During the webinar a poll of the attendees revealed that 94% felt that Telcos would be playing a major role in delivering Cloud-based services (31% “Amongst the Leaders” and 63% “Present but not the Leader”).

Richard Arthur

At the end of the webinar there was a lively Question and Answer session with HP expert presenters Richard Arthur, Director of Transformation Marketing and Colin I’Anson, Technical Director, Infrastructure Services.

Cloud Vision has included below the highlights of the Q&A session:

Q. Communications Service Providers (Telcos) do have their own network – what else makes them capable to become a supplier in terms of Communications as a Service (CaaS) or anything as a service?
Would more proactive and flexible third party companies be better positioned to build a sustainable business as service aggregators ? Telcos might only be successful in Infrastructure as a Service.

A. Yes that might be a real danger. Telcos if they do not take the right approach to this could find they are just pipe or infrastructure providers. So it is going to be how they shape up in front of their customers and how they provide to their customers. How they advertise their services and capabilities to their customers and how they are going to deliver and price them. This is a competitive market place and the telcos have got to be there and compete with everyone else. We need to remember they have some special assets but they can’t sit back and believe those special assets are going to make them strong in the marketplace. I think out poll today, during this webinar, very accurately showed that they have chance to be there as a leader but they may find themselves present but on the second tier. It’s going to be the skill of their marketing department to present their offerings and make them very attractive to the marketplace.

Telcos are not expert at selling IT services, some do – BT has a whole division doing this. Orange, France Telecom has its business services arm – so some are doing it, but some are not. Those that are not will have that issue of being a credible IT player, as well as, a telecom player. There are challenges there.

In summary, I think what we have highlighted is the opportunity is there. Not losing too much of the advantage from those companies who have already taken a first step to make such offers. They have and get organized and make compelling new service offerings of a global level.

Q. Is there any specific detailed common definitions of CaaS vendors like HP, and telco use.
A. Some of this is covered in the links we have provide and HP white papers. I didn’t see anything specific and we do not have taxonomy per se, we do define some services we see in CaaS that might help.
We are in the phase of defining those definitions and we can’t remember seeing any standard definitions that would be trusted across the whole industry.

Q. Since all telco’s are regional with some level of limited global alliance how do they provide cloud services to multinationals going forward?
A. The same question applies to Communications services – how do telcos provide services to multinationals, well some do and some regional’s may not. If you ask A T & T, and they will advise this is a large part of their business – the same applies to other such as Deutsche Telecom. Those players will be will placed to offer cloud services to those multinationals but we all now agree that regional players will not be well placed.. And that’s another reason why we are seeing SMB (Small, Medium Businesses) as a great target market for all Telcos.

If you are taking on multinational as your customer and you are a telco in a region – you will have connections to the other countries the multinational is working in or already arrange or in place. Whilst you may face some problems in countries where you are not operating, for example, working on the final connect up, you will have the bulk of tasks already completed. Hopefully in those countries you will only be working with branch offices and smaller instances. You may need to consider a partnership with another player for full global reach.

There is an issue that we skirted around and that is the issue of data location. It has been referenced a few times – do you know where you data sleeps at night? This question for a multinational using cloud services - if you are going to have a truly global cloud service as a multinational, you are going to have some legal and regulatory issues to address. Where is the data going to be. In different countries and different regions there are different rules and data storage and data transparency and they are different. So that is going to present a challenge for multinationals and they may have to plan for a geographic centre for cloud services and data – at least initially.

Q.Today, the SMB and enterprise market is served by the VAR and SI and internal departments. How can the Telco (Communications Service Provider) leverage the cloud opportunity and be a player?

A. We did this study, we asked the SMB’s directly who they would want to buy their communications as a services (CaaS) from. I think you are right in terms of buying their computer infrastructure and hardware, small business are very much using their channel and using their network but for telecom services we don’t think so. At least in our study they were very keen to use their telecom operator as a supplier for the services or even potentially a dedicated supplier. We therefore saw that as an ideal entry point for cloud services the Caas offer.

There is going to be a certain measure of how the network works and the suppliers will be delivering whatever they were delivering. However, this may be through different channels than the one they are using today.

If you are interested in how Telcos can play a leading role in Cloud Computing you can sign up for the next Cloud Vision webinar featuring the HP experts and moderated by Patrick Kelly, Research Director of Analysys Mason titled “Enterprise Mobility through Services in the Cloud: A Mobile Operator’s Guide”

Akamai Technologie, the leading provider of cloud optimization services, and Brightcove, the leading online video platform, have announced a wide-ranging alliance to drive quality, performance, and innovation in the online video industry.

Brightcove offers a comprehensive solution for video content management, encoding, publishing, monetization and analytics, while Akamai’s HD Network provides customers with global reach, full adaptive bit rate streaming, faster start-up times, and interactivity for their online video assets. The two companies have a combined customer base that includes the leading media, ecommerce, and enterprise companies, as well as small businesses around the globe. The integrated solution is designed to give customers a fast, seamless path to leverage the proven advantages of Akamai’s HD Network and Brightcove’s feature-rich online video platform to deliver high quality, adaptive bit rate video across Flash and iOS devices.

“We’ve already seen a tipping point with adoption of high definition video online, and now we’re seeing similar customer interest in seamless ways for enterprises big and small to use video to attract, engage, and retain online audiences,” said Paul Sagan, Akamai President and CEO. “Our alliance with Brightcove is important because it is designed to enable companies to have easy access to the high quality delivery made possible by the Akamai HD Network, and they will now have it instantly and around the world.”

Cloud Vision has secured a copy of the influential new book called the “New Polymath” by respected analyst and blogger Vinnie Mirchandani as a prize in our first members competition. To enter see the competition details below.

What has been lacking is a recognised training and certification for professionals to ensure that cloud solutions are implemented responsibly with the appropriate security controls.

To address these concerns the Cloud Security Alliance has launched the industry’s first user certification program for secure cloud computing. The Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK) is designed to ensure that a broad range of professionals with a responsibility related to cloud computing have a demonstrated awareness of the security threats and best practices for securing the cloud.

Cloud Security Alliance and European Initiatives

The Cloud Security Alliance has developed a widely adopted catalogue of security best practices, the Security Guidance for Critical Areas of Focus in Cloud Computing, V2.1. In addition, the European Network and Information Security Agency (ENISA) whitepaper “Cloud Computing: Benefits, Risks and Recommendations for Information Security” is an important contribution to the cloud security body of knowledge. The Certificate of Cloud Security Knowledge (CCSK) provides evidence that an individual has successfully completed an examination covering the key concepts of the CSA guidance and ENISA whitepaper. More information is available at www.cloudsecurityalliance.org/certifyme.

“Cloud represents the shift to compute as a utility and is ushering in a new generation of information technology. Critical services are now being provided via the cloud, which is creating a mandate for cloud security skills across the spectrum of IT-related professions,” said Jim Reavis, CSA executive director. “The CSA is providing a low cost certification that establishes a robust baseline of cloud security knowledge. When combined with existing professional certifications, the CCSK helps provide necessary assurance of user competency in this important time of transition. We are also thrilled to have ENISA’s support and their agreement to join our certification board.”

Additionally, the company has introduced the OpSource Partner Ecosystem partner program to deliver joint solutions.

“In order to be more flexible and cost-efficient, CIOs must be able to use cloud computing resources and SaaS applications as easily and securely as internally-managed resources,” said Treb Ryan, CEO, OpSource. “More than 30% of our managed hosting customers with dedicated environments also use our pay-as-you-go cloud services. At the same time, more and more of our OpSource Cloud customers were asking for help to scale their mission-critical applications running on the cloud. It just made sense to integrate our product portfolio.” OpSource has reorganized its offerings into services and solutions. Services now include:

• OpSource Managed Hosting: a bundled managed service including colocation, network connectivity, dedicated or virtual servers, operating system management, storage, firewalls, load balancers, and backup infrastructure

• OpSource Cloud Hosting: a pay-as-you-go service that includes a virtual server, Linux or Microsoft Windows operating system, CPU, RAM, storage and customer-configurable VLAN, firewall, and load balancer

• OpSource Application Operations: application management services including Database Management, Change Management, Performance Management, Application Optimization and Compliance • OpSource Business Operations: business tools that simplify billing, analytics and customer support Customized solutions include:

• SaaS ISV Solutions: Cloud and Managed Hosting services paired with Application Operations and Business Operations to scale operations and shorten time to market

• Telecom Solutions: White Label resale of the OpSource Cloud with Business Operations billing integration

• Cloud Platform Solutions: integration of the OpSource Cloud into Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) solutions

“Many enterprises are beginning to see the intrinsic value of sourcing both managed hosting, colocation and cloud infrastructure service from a single provider,” said Ted Chamberlin, Gartner Research Director. “Managed service providers who understand this trend, and offer these services with a single pane of glass management tools, will be the long term winners in the hosting market.”

To support its new focus, OpSource today announced the OpSource Partner Ecosystem, a comprehensive new partnership program. This program expands the company’s commitment to its partners by providing benefits for: developers and consultants; cloud platforms; integrators and MSPs; telecoms; and distributors and resellers.

“OpSource really understands how to help its partners make the most of the cloud, offering customized solutions like white labeling,” said NTT America Vice President of Products and Solutions Doug McMaster. “Working with OpSource we were able to quickly and easily build the NTT America Cloud, which not only brings our customers a leading cloud offering but also demonstrates our commitment to providing our customers with as complete and competitive hosting portfolio as possible.”

Tibco have launched an OnDemand Cloud-based analytics tool called Tibco Silver Spotfire aimed at small to medium-sized businesses and personal users at home.

This backs up the conclusions of Nucleus Research who in a recent study stated that “The analytics user population is expanding beyond the traditional base of analysts with statistical backgrounds to include marketers, risk managers, and even call centre staff.” Nucleus advises companies should “stop thinking of predictive analytics as a shiny object that would be nice to have,” if they’re to take advantage of the trend. “Somewhere in all those bits of data in your databases are trends that can predict the future.”

The new tool combines analytics with social networking-type collaboration making it easy for business teams to build and share reports, dashboards, charts and other visualisations to grow a corporate analytics knowledge base.

“We have now made it possible for anyone to analyze information and uncover compelling new insights from any data – whether for assignments at work, such as sales and marketing reviews, budgeting and planning or project management, as well as projects at home, such as reviewing personal stock portfolios or analyzing fantasy sports teams. For this reason, TIBCO is making our new offering a quick and simple program, unlocking dashboards, analytics, and BI for anyone” said Rock Gnatovich, Spotfire COO, Tibco Software Inc

Visit the Tibco Silver Spotfire web pages to learn more .

Tibco also presented the Tibco Silver Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering at the Cloud Computing World Forum which they say was “built from the ground up” drawing on the experience they have gained as poineers of the service-orientated architecture (SOA) with over 3,000 corporate and public sector customers with offices in 20 countries.

TIBCO Silver builds in “self-aware” elasticity. This feature eliminates the need for human intervention to address and resolve when applications should grow or shrink. Instead, TIBCO Silver automatically adjusts to troughs and spikes. Powered by TIBCO’s patented Complex Event Processing (CEP) technology, this self-aware capability will save software architects time and resources when they manage and display cloud applications.

The self-aware nature of TIBCO Silver also extends to how it manages Service Level Agreements (SLAs) – an essential requirement inside Global 2000 enterprises. For example, a software architect may need to specify an SLA for the response time of an online order processing application. Because it is self-aware, TIBCO Silver manages the performance of the application and dynamically deploys additional resources to ensure the SLA is met. TIBCO Silver also supports system and compute level SLAs such as CPU and memory usage.

“Our enterprise customers have been intrigued by the possibilities of cloud computing for some time, but the barriers to entry have been numerous,” said Matt Quinn, senior vice president of engineering and technology strategies of TIBCO Software. “With TIBCO Silver, we will be delivering what customers require to make enterprise cloud applications a reality now.”

This new cloud-based service, RA.Pid®, enables CIOs to significantly improve process efficiencies, increase productivity and enhance the business and technology agility of their IT organizations to support the information needs of business users.

RA.Pid is a cloud computing-based spend data management platform that unifies data quality, data integration and data management into one fully integrated (system agnostic) service that enables IT managers to efficiently deliver spend visibility to the business within 20-30 business days. Then, on an ongoing basis, RA.Pid automatically refreshes client data in hours.

Unlocking the value of spend data

Unlike traditional spend analysis solutions that lock a customer’s data in a vendor’s platform, Rosslyn Analytics pushes spend data that has been automatically cleansed, harmonized, categorized and enriched, using the RA.Pid platform, into the client’s data warehouse for use in existing information management systems. This open data integration approach allows IT to quickly maximize existing technology investment.

Bob Tarzey, Analyst and Director at Quocirca states: “The key to finding savings is locked away in a series of databases that underlie a baffling array of procurement, accounting and ERP applications. Rosslyn Analytics has developed a compelling on-demand spend analytics service that addresses the pain IT managers face when trying to unlock the value of spend data business users rely on to base decisions such as identifying savings in procurement or mitigating corporate risks managed by finance.”

RA.Pid Cloud Computing-based spend analytics

RA.Pid provides a complete range of advanced automated tools to address the most complex data integration projects in the quickest time possible.

Key features include:

Data extraction:

RA.Pid Extract is a proprietary extraction ETL tool that securely, efficiently and accurately extracts data directly from just about any ERP system in hours with minimal support from IT departments.

RA.Pid Extract also includes a powerful wizard function which enables users to schedule automated data extractions without relying on internal resources or Rosslyn Analytics to manage the process.

Data categorization & enrichment:

RA.Pid features RA.DAR, a proprietary categorization and enrichment engine that automatically normalizes and classifies ALL spend data to the highest level in the industry.

RA.DAR’s unique multi-tiered categorization methodology ensures users have a consistent source of spend data that is accurate and dynamically updated without manual intervention.

Data quality:

RA.Pid puts control of data quality processes into the hands of business information owners, such as data analysts and data stewards.

RA.Pid features ready-to-use dashboards and reports that empower users to continuously monitor and track data quality issues.

RA.Pid enables users to automatically identify and monitor the extent of errors and duplications in spend data, as well as the person who incorrectly entered the record into the system.

“IT managers no longer need to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on data quality and data integration solutions sold by vendors that do not specialize in spend analytics,” said Jeff Sweetman, COO of Rosslyn Analytics. “Rosslyn Analytics is solely focused on taking the complexity, uncertainty and cost out of helping IT organizations more efficiently serve the business with a powerful spend analytics service proven to deliver an ROI in six months.”

Whitepaper – “Spend analytics: A gift from IT to the business”

Rosslyn Analytics also released today a groundbreaking whitepaper that outlines how IT managers can drive the business forward quickly with on-demand services such as spend analytics. Download the whitepaper .
