Amazing to see how many young teens are taking the stage and talking to a gathering of adults at conferences. I’ve seen a couple of them and what might have seemed like an age where we used to be shy and insecure for the previous generation seems like the age of empowerment and proactiveness.

In this talk Tavi Gevinson, founder and blogger of the style blog thestylerookie.com talks to an audience about how she feels is the right way brands should connect with Generation Y and how age old passive marketing strategies will never work with her generation. Here is an interesting quote from the talk:

“One thing that we teens are told but we maybe don’t follow for a while is like ‘Be Yourself’, by like teachers, like magazines, tv shows and everything all tell us that… but at some point we are try to be like with the in-crowd, or in with the out-crowd or really trendy or really like a non-conformist, like Nirvana! So… I feel like it’s a lot like the same way with trends, or with brands because now being trendy doesn’t really work because they all end too soon. “

Spanish photographer Chema Madoz doesn’t like digital photography, but he loves to warp reality in impossible ways. Like this spoon with a fork shadow, which is a straight photo, with no Photoshop or laboratory manipulation whatsoever.

Although there might be multiple ways of achieving this effect, the most common explanation for this trick is :

The spoon is sitting on some kind of translucent paper. The fork is taped on the other side of the paper and light is being shined on it which casts a shadow onto the paper that’s shows through to the other side. Hence fork shadow under spoon.

Check out the some of the other photographs here.

Shopping has always played a large role in many scenarios developed for the application of various technology concepts right from receiving discounts & offers in a mall (Bluetooth), remote social shopping (mobile video cameras), getting recommendations on the move (location-based) or trying out clothes from home without actually wearing them (augmented reality). However almost none of these concepts (most of them atleast) have really seen the light of day and turned into reality.

I wonder why this is the case.

Using an application, like CASA’s Image Cutter or the Automatic Tile Cutter, you can create your own map tiles for Google Maps. It is therefore possible to replace Google Maps tiles with other maps.

Among the first to take advantage of this were game fans, producing maps for World of Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto. Graphic designers and artists, however, soon woke up to the fact that the Google Maps interface is a great way to present a design portfolio. All you need to do is create map tiles from a collage of work.

The Google Maps’ navigation tools can then be used to zoom in on designs and map markers to provide further information about an individual work.
