CloudBerry Backup now supports backup to FTP/SFTP with compression and encryption

CloudBerry Backup now has expanded the FTP and SFTP backup features with an ability to compress and encrypt data. These useful features allow you to raise a security level and reduce an amount of disc space that is required for data storage.

In our previous posts you could’ve learned about the backup to FTP and backup to SFTP features. Now we’ve added just one step to the backup plan setup procedure – a screen where you can specify compression and encryption options for your FTP or SFTP backup plan.

To specify compression and encryption options in your backup FTP or SFTP plan you have to start a Backup Wizard.

In the storage selection window choose your FTP or SFTP storage.

On the backup mode selection screen you have to select the Advanced Mode. Follow further system instructions until you get to the Compression and Encryption Options screen.

On the Compression and Encryption Options screen you can choose whether to compress files that you want to backup or not. It is done simply by checking a proper option.

Also you can enable data encryption and choose an algorithm for encryption from the provided list. To protect your encrypted data you need to specify a password. This password will be required when you restore your information so you have to write it down and save it in a secure place or just keep it in mind.

When you finish with the wizard, start your FTP or SFTP backup. Your data will be backed up compressed and encrypted according to the specification you set.

CloudBerry Backup with IAM users

CloudBerry Backup provides users with an ability to use Amazon Identity and Access Management service that allows to share one S3 account with multiple users and specify access rights for each of them.

Below is a brief guide on how to:

configure multiple users to have limited access to one S3 account
generate individual Access and Secret Keys for each user
configure CloudBerry Backup for each user.

Creating an Amazon IAM user

Use CloudBerry Explorer PRO to create IAM user. You can download a fully functional trial version here, it is free for 15 days.

To start you’ll need a Amazon Web Services account configured in CloudBerry Explorer. You can learn how to do that in our video tutorial.

Having an AWS account assigned with CloudBerry Explorer you can start creating your IAM user. Below are the steps you have to take:

Step 1. Open CloudBerry Explorer PRO, go to “Access Manager” and click on the “New Policy Wizard”.

Step 2. Select an AWS account you are going to work with.

Step 3. Create your IAM user and name it.

Step 4. Set up permissions for your IAM user. Just choose an appropriate option. For example purposes we’ve chosen to grant read and write to selected buckets access to our IAM user. Note: if you don’t want your user to see a list of all of your S3 buckets, uncheck the “Allow user to access to AWS console” box. It will provide you with better security level.

Step 5. Select buckets to be used in this access policy.

Step 6. Preview or modify created access policy script.

Our created policy script looks like this:

Please, note that this policy script was created for bucket cloudberry.tonny2. You can use it but ensure to replace a bucket name with a correct name of your bucket.

Step 7. Overview the list of your operations before the actual start. Click “Next” to proceed.

Step 8. After all the steps are completed you'll see the summary window. Now you’ve created your IAM user with limited permissions. To let this user backup with CloudBerry Backup you have to create Access and Secret Keys for him.

Creating Access Keys

Step 1. Open the “Access Manager” in CloudBerry Explorer PRO.

Step 2. Choose your AWS account.

Step 3. Right click on your IAM user and choose “Manage Access Keys”.

Step 4. In the opened window click “Create”. Access Key and Secret Key for your IAM user will be generated automatically.

Step 5. Сopy your credentials to clipboard or save it to a file.

Applying IAM keys to CloudBerry Backup

1. Open your CloudBerry Backup. In the “File” menu choose “Amazon S3 account…”.

2. Create a new account or edit existing one.

3. In the opened window insert previously created Access and Secret Keys and type a bucket name manually as the new user doesn't have a right to list buckets.

Now your CloudBerry Backup user will have access with configured permissions only to specified location in your S3 account.

CloudBerry Drive supports Keystone auth for HPCloud and other OpenStack storage

CloudBerry Drive maps cloud storage as a network drive to your computer and allows to access cloud storage directly from Windows Explorer interface. CloudBerry Drive supports over 20 different cloud storage services including: Amazon S3, Windows Azure and HP Cloud.

In CloudBerry Drive version 1.1 we supported Keystone identity service used by HP Cloud and other OpenStack compatible storage services for authentication and high-level authorization.

To use Keystone authentication for HP Cloud download the latest version of CloudBerry Drive, start the program and go to Options > Storage Accounts.

Click "Edit" if you already have HP Cloud storage account or click "Add" to create new. Choose HP Cloud from the drop down list, if you create new acount.

Check the "Use Keystone authentication" box and enter your "Tenant ID". In case of HP Cloud storage service "Tenant ID" ia equal to "Project ID". You can find it in "API Keys" section of your HP Cloud web console. Copy the "Project ID" to CloudBerry Drive an test connection.

If you've entered correct credentials you will succesfully pass connection test. Now you can map your HP Cloud storage account with Keystone authentication and use all the benefits CloudBerry Drive brings.

How to protect CloudBerry Backup with Master Password

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

In this post we would like to introduce our new Master Password feature that protects CloudBerry S3 Backup from unauthorized access. Although rarely these days some users still work on shared computers where other users have access to their data. Master Password helps you further protect your cloud account from unauthorized access. what's more important, it will protect your account and data if your computer is lost and/or stolen. Finally, this is a useful feature in a locked down environment where IT personnel is responsible for computer backup and the end user is not allowed to change the configuration.

To enable Master Password go to the Options screen, General tab. Click Protect console with master password option and enter the password.

Next time you open the console it will ask you for a password

In the post below we will briefly overview each of the new features designed to help our customers exploit cloud backup technology with maximum efficiency.

FTP/SFTP server support

Cloudberry Backup now supports FTP and SFTP servers. With the new version users can backup their data to FTP and SFTP servers that are widely used for data storage. You can find more details in post covering backup to FTP and post covering backup to SFTP.

Master password

We added an ability to set master password in CloudBerry Backup. It may become very useful for IT administrators and users who need to lock software from unauthorized access. Once specified, master password will be required to access Cloudberry Backup, even if it’s already running in background.

Local backup speed improvements

Local backup is an option in CloudBerry Backup that allows backup to local drives, NAS, mapped network drives and network shares. Most of our users found local backup very useful feature but some complained on the low backup speed. In the new version we have improved local backup performance to allow users backup their data locally much faster.

Multiple emails notification

In previous versions Cloudberry Backup users were able to specify only one address for email notifications. From the new version users can set multiple email addresses to receive notification messages on backup completion status. You just have to write email addresses to proper line and separate them from one another with commas.

Clone backup plan

Also we introduced an ability to clone existing backup plans. Now instead of creating new backup plan from scratch users can copy an existing plan and modify it as required.

Ignore self signed SSL certificate

In previous versions backups to online storage with outdated SSL certificate were aborted by the software. Now your backup will run even if an issues with SSL certificate occur. This may be necessary for example for the local OpenStack Swift storage implementations

Backup files < XX MB

We have also added new file filter based on a file size. Now users can specify the maximum size of the files to backup. For example you can set the application to backup only files that are less than 500 Mb, 1000 Mb, 5000 Mb or any other size that fits your requirements.

Highlight local backup

We have also added “Local backup” button to the application welcome screen. It allows to easily access local backup settings. You can find a new button on the left part of the welcome screen as shown on the screenshot below.

With the number of new features CloudBerry Backup becomes more powerful, more flexible and more secure. The addition of FTP/SFTP support, master password, local backup speed improvements, clone backup plan functionality and other described in this post make the product more appealing to broader audience of SMB customers.

How to backup to SFTP using CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry Lab presents a new version of CloudBerry Backup. Now this powerful backup application supports SFTP protocols. It means that CloudBerry Backup users now have an ability to backup their files to SFTP servers with ease and convenience.

SFTP is a protocol that uses Secure Shell to transfer files. SFTP encrypts transmitted files and commands. It makes data transfer over network secure and reliable. SFTP backup feature will become useful for those who prefer using STFP servers to store valuable data.

To start backup to SFTP you have to open your CloudBerry Backup application and start Backup Wizard as usual.

In the storage selection window now you can choose SFTP storage.

If you don’t already have an SFTP account you can create it using your SFTP settings as it is shown on the screenshot below.

Then you have to choose files you want to backup to SFTP server.

You can also setup purge, schedule and email notification options during further steps.

When the backup plan is ready you can run it manually or automatically according to schedule that was configured during the setup process.

How to backup to FTP with CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry Backup now supports backup to FTP servers. New Cloudberry Lab’s application has become even more powerful and functional than before. Now every FTP user can automate backup to FTP using just one convenient application.

FTP is a network protocol which is used to transfer files over a TCP-based networks. When you transfer files from one host to another over the Internet you use FTP. FTP – servers also widely used for keeping and sharing information all over the world. FTP backup feature significantly expands capabilities of the CloudBerry Backup and makes it more useful and convenient for lots of users.

Backup to FTP with CloudBerry Backup is not more complicated than backup to any cloud storage or local drive. To begin backup you just have to open the Backup Wizard and choose FTP in the storage selection window.

If you don’t have an FTP storage account on CloudBerry Backup’s storages list you’ll have to create it as shown on the screenshot below.

On the next step you’ll have to choose files and folders to backup to FTP.

The program will ask you to specify purge and schedule options for your backup plan. Also you can configure email notifications according to your needs.

After configuring an FTP backup plan you can run it manually or wait until the schedule trigger starts your backup automatically.

How to back up SQL Server to Amazon S3 or Amazon Glacier.

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

How to restore SQL Server database from Amazon S3 or Amazon Glacier

How to restore SQL Server database with MS Management Studio

How to copy data to SFTP servers with CloudBerry S3 Explorer

As always we are adding features to make it easier for our customers to use the functionality to offer the most compelling Amazon S3 , CloudFront , IAM and Glacier client on Windows platform.

A few years ago we added a support for the regular FTP protocol. Since then it became a very popular option and at the same time we have got a numerous requests for SFTP protocol support. In the newer release we are introducing the Secure FTP (SFTP) support. to configure SFTP account go to File | SFTP Account menu

once the account is configured you can do all common file management operations such as

1. copy files

2. move files

3. create folders

4. rename files

5. delete files

We hope the new storage option will become popular. very soon we will add the option to back up to FTP and SFTP to CloudBerry Backup.

Upload to Amazon Glacier using PowerShell

As always we are adding features to make it easier for our customers to use the functionality to offer the most compelling Amazon S3 , CloudFront , IAM and Glacier client on Windows platform.

CloudBerry S3 Explorer has supported Glacier for quite some time now. We introduced the Glacier support in September, followed by supporting encryption and compression and finally Amazon S3 to Glacier archiving.

Since the very first release CloudBerry Explorer featured PowerShell extension to automate Amazon S3 and CloudFront tasks. The latest release of CloudBerry Explorer comes with a PowerShell extension that helps users automate Glacier tasks and integrate it with other PowerShell routines. The extension includes commands such as create, delete vaults, copy and move data to Glacier, create Inventory and Retrieval jobs and create Lifecycle policies.

The latest version of CloudBerry S3 Explorer PRO comes with compression and encryption support for Amazon Glacier. It means you can set up the compression and encryption options one the global level using the Tools | Options menu.

Or using the Upload Rules feature that allows selectively apply compression and encryption to the files, bucket and vaults. This feature is available in the Tools | Upload Rules menu . Learn more about the upload rules here

CloudBerry Backup. Move Repository

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

CloudBerry Backup uses local index database called repository to minimize the number of requests to S3. Under certain conditions the database can grow. So it is sometimes necessary to move the repository to another disk with more space. Technically the repository is an SQLite database file called CBBackup.db

By default the repository database is located in the user profile. On Windows Vista/7/8/2008/2012 it is under C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\CloudBerry Backup Server Edition\Data

We have implemented the option to move the repository to another location right from the GUI. Go to Tools | Options | Repository in the program menu. Click the button next to the location and specify the new one. It will require admin permissions to change the location.

On the same page you can see the current size of the repository and there is an option to shrink the database to reduce its size.

Checking network share permissions with CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

CloudBerry Backup supported network locations backup for a long time. in one of the previous releases we even introduced a feature that allows to set specific credentials for each network location However the customers have been still coming across Path not found and similar issues.

With the new release we are improving the network locations permissions check and introducing the new step for the backup wizard. the challenge is that the network location should be accessible for CloudBerry Backup service account as it is running in the background as a Windows Service and may have a different set of permissions in comparison to the user running the configuration wizard. By default CloudBerry Backup service is running under the local system account that doesn't have an access to remote shares. As a result the user running the backup wizard may have access to certain network locations while CloudBerry Backup doesn't. Therefore it is important to set up credentials for each of them.

To further facilitate this process we are introducing the new step of the Backup Wizard called Check Network Shares. It shows up only if you add at least one network share on the Backup Source step. On this step you will have an option to enter credentials for each share and to check if they are accessible for CloudBerry Backup service.

The latest release of CloudBerry Explorer comes with the ability to display Amazon Glacier storage using the Folder View to make it easier for PC users to work with Glacier.

As we have always kept the full folder structure in the metadata after upgrading to the new version all existing files will show in respective folders.

Amazon Glacier is designed for very infrequent restores and restore costs may be substantial. And in fact it is very confusing. Check out the following article from Amazon FAQ.

The data restore is charged based on the pick usage during the given month. In other words if you have to restore 100GB and you restore them in 1 hours you will pay one amount. But if you restore 1GB for the next 100 hours you will pay 100 times less.

In the latest release of CloudBerry Explorer PRO v 3.8 we are introducing the Smart Retrieval functionality, that allows you to manage data restore budget in an intelligent way.

When you run a copy for Glacier it will pop up a dialog asking you to specify your peak retrieval rate in MB. It will also allow you to allocate data retrieval to run for a number of hours to stay within a selected budget. This way you can significantly reduced your retrieval costs.

After you set it up, the restore will run in the background retrieving the portions of data every hour. Note, you can also access this dialog from Tools | Options menu

You can monitor the restore progress on the bottom panel.

Generating a report with the list of files copied with CloudBerry Backup on each run

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

The email notification has been one of the most popular feature of CloudBerry Backup for a long time. Over the time we improved the email report, added the ability to use custom SMTP server for the server edition and added the ability to report status to the Windows Event Log. With the latest release you can an option to generate a detailed list of files copied with each back up.
To enable this option go to the Notification step of the Backup Wizard and check of the Generate detailed report option.

in this case the report with the list of all files will be generated. you will get an email that you are already familiar with but it will have a new download link

How to Archive Amazon S3 data to Glacier with CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

Amazon has recently released the functionality that allows easily archive the data from Amazon S3 to Glacier low cost storage. With the latest release of CloudBerry Backup you can take full advantage of that functionality. With the addition of this functionality you almost don't need to perform any specific modifications to your existing backup plans and easily move existing data to Glacier.

The only caveat is that when you do the restore you will need to wait 3-5 hours for the Retrieval Job to complete.

Go to the Tools menu and click Archive to Glacier Settings option.

Or use the Archive option on the panel on the left

The Archive to Glacier Settings dialog will help you choose the data you want to archive, e.g. you can archive selected paths only.

How to Use CloudBerry Backup with Rackspace Cloud Files

This post explains how to sign up for Rackspace account, create a container, find credentials and use them to connect CloudBerry Backup with your Rackspace account.

Create Rackspace Account

Go to http://www.rackspace.com/cloud/public/files/ and click Sign Up button.

You will need to go through the 4 steps to sign up for Rackspace account. The first on is "Create an Account" step where you need to enter your email, username and password. The second is "Account Information" step . Enter valid phone number and email to successfully activate your account on the "Confirmation" step. The third step is "Billing Information". Your credit card should have positive balance to be successfully validated. The last step is "Confirmation". Click "Activate my Account" button to proceed.

Create Cloud Files Container

After account activation you need to create your first Cloud Files container. For that login to Rackspace Cloud Control Panel using username and password you set up on the first step of the sign up process.

In the Control Panel interface you need to click on the "Files" option in the top menu.

In the displayed window click "Create Container", specify container name and region.

The created container should appear in the list.

Download CloudBerry Backup

Download CloudBerry Backup Desktop edition or Server edition. Install and start the program.

Configure CloudBerry Backup for Rackspace Cloud Files

Click "Backup Wizard" in the top left corner, skip the first step and on the second step click <Create a new account> option in the "Rackspace" drop-down menu.

Now you need to enter Rackspace account credentials to connect it with CloudBerry Backup.

1. Display name can be anything.

2. Username is what you have set up during signup.

3. Api key is a secret key that is required to access your Cloud Files account. To find it go back to Rackspace Cloud Control Panel and click on your account name in the top right corner, then click on "API Keys".

If you entered everything correctly, you will see your container under "Container:". Complete the rest of the Backup Wizard step to set up your backup plan and enjoy CloudBerry Backup with Rackspace.

Automate Data Restore with CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

The latest version comes with the feature called Restore Plans, which allows you to run the restore process in the background and/ or by schedule. It addresses two important use cases:

1. Run the restore process in the background. This is important for instance with the Glacier restore when you need to wait 4-5 hours for the data to become available.

2. Run the restore on another server periodically on schedule to make sure the other server has the recent copy of the data.

To create a Restore Plan run the Restore Plan Wizard. It is not much different than the previous restore wizard ,but now it allows you to save the restore configuration as a plan for future re-use/scheduling purposes

and schedule it.

Once the Restore Plan is created you can check it out and monitor the progress on the new Restore Plans tab

How to archive data from Amazon S3 to Glacier with CloudBerry Explorer

Amazon S3 has recently released the functionality that allows easily Archive Amazon S3 data to Amazon Glacier low cost storage. With the latest release of CloudBerry Explorer freeware you can take full advantage of that functionality. Right click on the bucket and click Archive to Glacier from context menu

The Bucket lifecycle policy dialog box will open.

Click add to create a rule, specify the path and the number of days or a specific date when you'd like to move the files to Glacier. In addition you can indicate if you want to enable the rule right away.

Note, you can also manage Object Expiation with this dialog. Learn more about Object Expiration here. Take into account that Object Expiration policy will delete the files permanently with no way to restore them.

Click OK to create the rule.

Note. The data will look like it stays on S3, but actually it will go to Glacier. It will have the Storage Class = GLACIER, check out the screenshot below. It may take more than 24 hours for the Lifecycle policy to apply.

How to Use CloudBerry Backup with DreamObjects

Create DreamObjects account

Go to http://dreamhost.com/cloud/dreamobjects/ and click "Start Now" to start you 2 month free trial.

Fill in the registration form and click "Submit Order". You will get an email saying that your account has been activated. Now you can get access to the Web Panel . Use email and password specified in the registration form to log in.

After you login, the system will automatically create a user in the panel (it may take some time).

Download CloudBerry Backup

Download Desktop edition or Server edition of CloudBerry Backup. Install and launch the program.

Configure CloudBerry Backup

Start the program and select "Backup Wizard". On the second step select the <Create a new account> option in the "DreamObjects" drop down menu and enter account credentials.

1. Display name can be any.
2. Access key can be found in the "Storage" portion of the Web Panel. To get there, log in to the Web Panel and click "Storage" in the left panel menu and you will see the list of users created. Click on the user to see the Access key.

3. Secret key is located next to Access Key. Click "Show Secret Key" to see it.

4. Service point must be objects.dreamhost.com
If you entered everything correctly, you will be able to see buckets you've created earlier and/or create new ones. Complete the rest of the Backup Wizard steps to customize your backup plan and enjoy CloudBerry Backup with DreamObjects.

How to Map Amazon S3 as a Local Disk with CloudBerry Drive

This post explains how to configure CloudBerry Drive to map your Amazon S3 account as a local disk on your computer. If you don't have your Amazon S3 account yet this How to Sign up for Amazon S3 guide will help to create one.

Download and Install CloudBerry Drive

Download CloudBerry Drive and install the program.

Configure CloudBerry Drive to Work with Amazon S3

After installation you can find CloudBerry Drive icon in the system tray. Left click on it and select "Options".

Choose <Create a new account> in the "Storage Account" drop down menu. Now choose "Amazon S3" in the "Storage Provider" list. You can import your Amazon S3 account info, if you're already using CloudBerry Explorer.

1. Display name can be anything you want.
2. Access key could be found in Security Credentials section in your AWS account.
3. Secret key is located next to Access Key ID in your AWS account. Click "Show" to see it.

Click "Test Connection" to check entered account credentials for accuracy. If test was successful, specify drive letter, volume label and path to specific bucket/folder in the "Mapped Drive Options" dialog. Check the box if you want CloudBerry Drive to map this cloud storage account at system startup.

Click "OK" and reboot your computer. Now you can access Amazon S3 directly from Windows Explorer and/or other applications.

You can always access CloudBerry Drive from the system tray.

Enjoy CloudBerry Drive with Amazon S3.
