Block level backup and full backup explained

CloudBerry Backup supports a block level backup feature. This feature allows you to backup only modified parts of the files instead of running a full backup every time the file is changed. Block-level backup takes less bandwidth for regular backups and reduces the backup time.

Note: Block-level works only to Amazon S3.

To activate a block level backup feature you have to check the “Use block-level backup” box on the “Select Backup Mode” screen of the Backup Wizard.

When you first run backup plan with the block level backup feature enabled, full copy of each file will be uploaded to storage. Next time you run a backup plan, only modified parts of the previously uploaded files will be moved to storage. All the new files will be also backed up.

Note: If you choose to use block level backup, you will see the Full Backup Schedule screen where you can specify conditions for performing a Full Backup. Full Backup is only related to block level backup and is a part of it. Full Backup affects only individual files, not the whole backup set.

Initial backup and blocks

Every time a block level backup is performed, CloudBerry Backup checks whether your files were modified. If they were, backup client will identify modified blocks and move them to storage.

Full copy is kept in a storage as it was uploaded and all the blocks containing modifications is applied to that copy. It is recommended to run full backup from time to timer.

Note: Modified blocks of the originally backed up file require additional storage space.

Purge and block level backup

Backup Wizard allows you to setup purge options. You can set up an expiration period for each version of file and specify number of versions to keep on storage. These purge options can be used mutually.

Block level backup creates modified blocks - “diffs” related to a full copy of a file, without the full copy diffs won’t be of any use. That is a reason why Purge feature takes effect only when you have two or more full copies - if you have just one full copy of a file purge won’t work. Any full or diff is considered as a version. However, a diff can't be purged if the related full still exists and also full can't be purged if there are diffs related to it.

Imagine that you’ve made a full backup of a file and set CloudBerry Backup to keep 3 latest versions:

Versions	Comments
F1 - full copy #1	Now you have just one full copy.
D1.1 - diff 1.1	Now you have full copy and one set of modified blocks - D1.1.
D1.2 - diff 1.2	You have F1, D1.1 and D1.2.
D1.3 - diff 1.3	Now you have four versions and may expect that your F1 will be purged but it will not be purged because there are diffs assigned to it.
F2 - full copy #2	You decide to make a full backup and now have five versions. You may be expecting F1 and D1 to be purged but they will not be purged because there are D1.2 and D1.3 assigned to F1. D1.2 and D1.3 are in number of 3 latest versions so all the related data can not be deleted.
D2.1 - diff 2.1	Now you have six versions and may be expecting F1, D1.1 and D1.2 to be purged but they will not be purged because D1.3 links to F1. And D1.3 is in number of 3 latest versions.
D2.2 - diff 2.2	F1 and D1.1 and D1.2 and D1.3 will be purged. Now you have three versions.

How to setup full backup according to a percentage of file modifications

On the Full Backup Schedule screen you can set up a conditions to run full backup. Just check the “Run full only if total size of previous level backups larger than:” checkbox. You will have to specify a percentage of total changes from last full size of a file. When total changes in a file will reach the threshold, a full backup will be initiated.

Conclusion

CloudBerry Backup block level backup feature is a perfect solution for everyday backup as it can significantly reduce amounts of data that is moved to a storage each day. Block level backup speeds things up and allows to prevent loss of valuable data even if your files have been modified multiple times. However it is important to keep in mind to do regular full backup to save on space, increase recovery time and purge older versions.

How to restore data from Amazon S3 to a new computer

What if you’ve got a new computer and you want to restore some data from Amazon S3 to your computer's local drive? In this post we’ve tried to give a detailed instruction on how to do it with CloudBerry Backup. You just have to follow simple instructions listed below to restore your data to your new computer as if it was originally kept on its drive.

1. Open the CloudBerry Backup.

2. Click on the “File” menu and select “Amazon S3 Account…” from the list.

3. On the “Amazon S3” tab click on the “Add” button.

4. Register the same Amazon S3 account you've used for backup: name plan as you wish, specify Access key and Secret key.

5. Choose the same bucket you've used for backup from a drop-down list.

6. Specify the same “prefix” you've used for backup in advanced settings. By default the prefix is set to your computer name

Note: When Amazon S3 account has been selected, the repository sync is started automatically that will retrieve the list of backed up files so that you can restore afterwards. If you don't see the files which is unlikely, try to synchronize the internal database:

Go to the “Tools” menu.
Click on the “Options”.
Open the “Advanced” tab.
Click “Synchronize Repository”.

7. Go to the “Backup Storage” tab.

8. Select your S3 account from a drop-down list.

9. Right-click on a folder you want to restore and select “Restore” to open the Restore Wizard.

10. You will see the Restore Wizard. Follow all the steps of the Wizard as usual to create a restore plan.

11. When you finish with a creation of restoration plan, run it.

If you’ve done everything correctly, a data will be transferred to your computer when a restore process is complete.

How to Restore data from Amazon Glacier

If you want to restore some data stored in the Amazon Glacier to a new computer you have to take some easy steps. First of all you have to register your Glacier account with CloudBerry Backup.

Register Glacier account with CloudBerry Backup

1. Open the CloudBerry Backup.

2. Open the “File” menu and select “Amazon Glacier Account…”.

3. On the “Glacier” tab click on the “Add” button.

4. Specify any display name, specify Access key and Secret key.

5. Specify vault name manually or choose a vault from a drop-down list. You should specify a vault where you have backed up your data in order restore the files.

Note: you can learn more about How to sign-up for Amazon Glacier and CloudBerry Backup in another post.

Once you finish with register your Glacier account with CloudBerry Backup you will have to proceed with repository synchronization.

Repository synchronization

1.Open the “Tools” menu and click on the “Options”.

2.Open the “Repository” tab and click on “Synchronize Repository” button.

3.Select your Glacier account from a drop-down list.

4.Click on the "Synchronize Now" button to start repository sync.

Important note: sync process takes from 4 to 5 hours because under the scene we are running Glacier inventory job.

When the synchronization is over you shall be able to proceed with a restore process.

Note: If you uploaded during last 24 hours, the Glacier Global inventory may not occur and files may be not available.

Restore job

1. Open the “Backup Storage” tab.

2. Select your Amazon Glacier account from a drop-down list.

3. Right-click on a folder or a file you want to restore. Click on the “Restore” to begin the restoration process.

4. On the Plan Name step of the Restore Wizard you will be asked whether you want to run a backup plan once or to save a restoration plan for future use. Just check “Run restore once” or “Save restore plan” radio-button. If you choose to save your restore plan, you will be asked to specify a plan name.

5. Choose a restore type and specify a restore destination.

6. Specify a password to decrypt files if needed.

7. Glacier Smart Restore step allows you to specify a peak retrieval rate. Peak retrieval rate is what Glacier restoration pricing depends on. Specifying a peak retrieval rate allows you to control restoration expenses.

Also on Smart Restore step you can choose not to limit retrieval process but it can lead to unexpected expenses and is not recommended.

8. See the Summary screen and proceed to the Finish screen where you Check the “Run restore now” checkbox if you want to run a plan on the Restore Wizard finish.

Important note: Amazon Glacier retrieval job can take 4-5 hours so it will take up to 5 hours before restore process will start.

When a restore process completes your data will be restored to the directory on your computer you’ve specified.

Conclusion

It is important to note that when restoring from Glacier it may take quite some time.

Glacier inventory job may take up to 5 hours;
Glacier retrieval job may also take up to 5 hours;
More time will be required if you use Smart Restore feature and spread restore process over time to control budget.

CloudBerry Lab is proud to present Cloudberry Backup version 3.5.1. With new enhancements our backup solution has become more powerful and efficient. Here’s a list of improvements and new features:

Support of email notifications via custom SMTP server for all editions of CloudBerry Backup;
Support of MS Exchange 2013 databases backup in CloudBerry Backup for MS Exchange Server and Enterprise edition (beta);
Multiple files upload speed improvement;
Delete Locally Deleted Files feature added to Custom mode;
AWS Import/Export feature support for all editions of CloudBerry Backup;
CloudBerry Backup compression for SQL database backup on SQL Express;
Truncation of Exchange transaction logs on backup.

Below is a short overview of all the improvements listed above.

Support for email notifications via custom SMTP server for ALL editions

Previously SMTP email notifications via custom SMTP server were supported only in Cloudberry Backup Enterprise and Server editions, now this valuable feature is also included in all editions of Cloudberry Backup.

In the Cloudberry Backup 3.5.1 on the Notification step of the Backup Wizard you will see the “I want to use my SMTP server for email notifications” check box. Check it to enable this feature and the SMTP Settings window will be opened automatically.

On the SMTP Settings screen you will be asked to specify your SMTP server details as shown on the screenshot below.

Once notification options via custom SMTP server are set, users will receive notifications on specified emails every time this backup plan is running.

MS Exchange Backup Enhancements

In a new release there is a couple of valuable enhancements that are to make a backup of MS Exchange databases more efficient. They are Support of MS Exchange 2013 databases (beta) and backup of Exchange transaction logs

Support of MS Exchange 2013 databases (beta)

With a new release users of Cloudberry Backup Enterprise and MS Exchange editions got an ability to back up MS Exchange 2013 databases. In previous editions Cloudberry Backup supported backup only of MS Exchange 2010 databases and so we received multiple requests to enhance our products with the backup MS Exchange 2013 databases feature.

Truncation of Exchange transaction logs on backup

Now Cloudberry Backup Enterprise and MS Exchange editions are able to truncate Exchange transaction logs on backup. Once the transactions are committed to the database and tracked by the checkpoint files, the log files are no longer needed by the database. If log files are not deleted, they will eventually consume all the available disk space and the Exchange databases will be taken offline until the log files are purged from the disk.

Improvement of upload speed for multiple files

We’ve made an upload of multiple files to storage faster. If in an earlier version an upload of huge amount of files could take a long time, now it’ll be performed about 4-5 times faster. For example: in Cloudberry Backup 3.4 upload of 5000 files could take an hour, in Cloudberry Backup 3.5.1 such upload will take about 5-10 minutes. An improvement of upload speed for multiple files has affected each edition of CloudBerry Backup.

Custom mode supports "Delete files that have been deleted locally"

In earlier versions of Cloudberry Backup we had a feature that automated a deletion of files in storage that have been deleted from local drive. This feature is a part of the Purge step and was supported in Advanced Mode and In Simple Mode only. Now users can use this valuable feature also for backup in a Custom Mode – you need just to check the checkbox and specify number of days after local deletion when files should be removed from storage.

Support of AWS Import/Export for ALL CloudBerry Backup editions

AWS Import/ Export service allows you to send a flash drive, removable hard disc or other media device to Amazon so that the data is uploaded to S3. It can significantly speed things up if you need to upload large amount of data to Amazon S3. Multiple Gigabytes and Terabytes of data can be uploaded in hours instead of being transferred to cloud storage for days or weeks.

Earlier AWS Import/ Export service was supported only in Cloudberry Backup Server Edition, now it is available for users across all editions of Cloudberry Backup. You can learn more about CloudBerry Backup AWS Import/ Export feature in our other post.

CloudBerry Backup compression for SQL database backup on SQL Express

MS SQL native compression is not supported for MS SQL Express. Because of it previously users of SQL Express couldn’t use the compression feature of CloudBerry Backup for backup of their MS SQL databases. In Cloudberry Backup 3.5.1 MS SQL Express databases can be compressed via embedded Gzip algorithm. Compression reduces size of files before transfer to cloud storage and speeds up an upload process.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Now .NET 4.0 is a system requirement for all editions.

Conclusion

With the number of new features CloudBerry Backup becomes more powerful and compelling. The addition of new features and improvement of upload speed for multiple objects make the CloudBerry Backup more appealing to broader audience of SMB customers. We hope that most of CloudBerry Backup will find this enchantments really useful.

How to share cloud storage on the network with CloudBerry Drive

As always we are upgrading CloudBerry Drive with new features to provide our customers with better functionality and make our products the most compelling and efficient on the market.

The latest version of CloudBerry Drive Server Edition comes with a support of a network share. Server with installed CloudBerry Drive can mount a cloud storage folder as a local drive. With the newest version of CloudBerry Drive Server Edition this network folder can be accessed by any user of the network.

Every authorized user on the network applied to a server with CloudBerry Drive can now access a cloud storage right via the Windows Explorer as if it was their computer’s local drive.

To enable this feature you have to open the CloudBerry Drive options menu.

Select a Cloud Storage Account you want to share with a network users and click on the “Edit” button. If you don’t have a Cloud Storage Account applied, you have to map it as a local drive. See the details in the How to Map Amazon S3 as a Local Disk with CloudBerry Drive post.

On the Mapped Drive Options screen you have to click on the “Network Mapped Drive” radio button and check the “Allow access from other computers via network share” box.
Note: Volume label defines a name of a shared folder.

When you’re finished with an access setup, click “OK” to grant your network users with an access to shared folders within a bucket. To access files in the cloud storage as if they were kept in a network share, users will have to enter a network share address to the Windows Explorer address line and specify the network credentials (if necessary).

How to backup MS Exchange data with CloudBerry Backup

To backup your Exchange data, start CloudBerry Backup for MS Exchange application. Click on the “Backup MS Exchange” to start Backup Wizard.

Choose a storage where to your MS Exchange databases will be backed up. It can be any of supported cloud storages, local storage or FTP/SFTP server.

Name your backup plan and click “Next” button.

On the next screen you will be asked to choose MS Exchange database(s) to backup. Select proper database(s) from the list and click “Next”.

You can set up Compression and Encryption options. On this screen you can enable backup compression, set up encryption options and specify a password for encryption. Also here you can choose whether to use Server Side Encryption and whether to use Amazon RRS instead of S3 storage.

During next few steps you will be asked to specify purge options, set up backup schedule and specify pre/post-backup actions you want. Also you can set up email notification options. When you are finished with backup plan creation you will see the Summary screen where you can overview your backup plan details. Now your MS Exchange backup plan is ready and your backup will be performed according to the schedule you specified.

CloudBerry Backup now supports backup to FTP/SFTP with compression and encryption

CloudBerry Backup now has expanded the FTP and SFTP backup features with an ability to compress and encrypt data. These useful features allow you to raise a security level and reduce an amount of disc space that is required for data storage.

In our previous posts you could’ve learned about the backup to FTP and backup to SFTP features. Now we’ve added just one step to the backup plan setup procedure – a screen where you can specify compression and encryption options for your FTP or SFTP backup plan.

To specify compression and encryption options in your backup FTP or SFTP plan you have to start a Backup Wizard.

In the storage selection window choose your FTP or SFTP storage.

On the backup mode selection screen you have to select the Advanced Mode. Follow further system instructions until you get to the Compression and Encryption Options screen.

On the Compression and Encryption Options screen you can choose whether to compress files that you want to backup or not. It is done simply by checking a proper option.

Also you can enable data encryption and choose an algorithm for encryption from the provided list. To protect your encrypted data you need to specify a password. This password will be required when you restore your information so you have to write it down and save it in a secure place or just keep it in mind.

When you finish with the wizard, start your FTP or SFTP backup. Your data will be backed up compressed and encrypted according to the specification you set.

CloudBerry Backup with IAM users

CloudBerry Backup provides users with an ability to use Amazon Identity and Access Management service that allows to share one S3 account with multiple users and specify access rights for each of them.

Below is a brief guide on how to:

configure multiple users to have limited access to one S3 account
generate individual Access and Secret Keys for each user
configure CloudBerry Backup for each user.

Creating an Amazon IAM user

Use CloudBerry Explorer PRO to create IAM user. You can download a fully functional trial version here, it is free for 15 days.

To start you’ll need a Amazon Web Services account configured in CloudBerry Explorer. You can learn how to do that in our video tutorial.

Having an AWS account assigned with CloudBerry Explorer you can start creating your IAM user. Below are the steps you have to take:

Step 1. Open CloudBerry Explorer PRO, go to “Access Manager” and click on the “New Policy Wizard”.

Step 2. Select an AWS account you are going to work with.

Step 3. Create your IAM user and name it.

Step 4. Set up permissions for your IAM user. Just choose an appropriate option. For example purposes we’ve chosen to grant read and write to selected buckets access to our IAM user. Note: if you don’t want your user to see a list of all of your S3 buckets, uncheck the “Allow user to access to AWS console” box. It will provide you with better security level.

Step 5. Select buckets to be used in this access policy.

Step 6. Preview or modify created access policy script.

Our created policy script looks like this:

Please, note that this policy script was created for bucket cloudberry.tonny2. You can use it but ensure to replace a bucket name with a correct name of your bucket.

Step 7. Overview the list of your operations before the actual start. Click “Next” to proceed.

Step 8. After all the steps are completed you'll see the summary window. Now you’ve created your IAM user with limited permissions. To let this user backup with CloudBerry Backup you have to create Access and Secret Keys for him.

Creating Access Keys

Step 1. Open the “Access Manager” in CloudBerry Explorer PRO.

Step 2. Choose your AWS account.

Step 3. Right click on your IAM user and choose “Manage Access Keys”.

Step 4. In the opened window click “Create”. Access Key and Secret Key for your IAM user will be generated automatically.

Step 5. Сopy your credentials to clipboard or save it to a file.

Applying IAM keys to CloudBerry Backup

1. Open your CloudBerry Backup. In the “File” menu choose “Amazon S3 account…”.

2. Create a new account or edit existing one.

3. In the opened window insert previously created Access and Secret Keys and type a bucket name manually as the new user doesn't have a right to list buckets.

Now your CloudBerry Backup user will have access with configured permissions only to specified location in your S3 account.

CloudBerry Drive supports Keystone auth for HPCloud and other OpenStack storage

CloudBerry Drive maps cloud storage as a network drive to your computer and allows to access cloud storage directly from Windows Explorer interface. CloudBerry Drive supports over 20 different cloud storage services including: Amazon S3, Windows Azure and HP Cloud.

In CloudBerry Drive version 1.1 we supported Keystone identity service used by HP Cloud and other OpenStack compatible storage services for authentication and high-level authorization.

To use Keystone authentication for HP Cloud download the latest version of CloudBerry Drive, start the program and go to Options > Storage Accounts.

Click "Edit" if you already have HP Cloud storage account or click "Add" to create new. Choose HP Cloud from the drop down list, if you create new acount.

Check the "Use Keystone authentication" box and enter your "Tenant ID". In case of HP Cloud storage service "Tenant ID" ia equal to "Project ID". You can find it in "API Keys" section of your HP Cloud web console. Copy the "Project ID" to CloudBerry Drive an test connection.

If you've entered correct credentials you will succesfully pass connection test. Now you can map your HP Cloud storage account with Keystone authentication and use all the benefits CloudBerry Drive brings.

How to protect CloudBerry Backup with Master Password

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

In this post we would like to introduce our new Master Password feature that protects CloudBerry S3 Backup from unauthorized access. Although rarely these days some users still work on shared computers where other users have access to their data. Master Password helps you further protect your cloud account from unauthorized access. what's more important, it will protect your account and data if your computer is lost and/or stolen. Finally, this is a useful feature in a locked down environment where IT personnel is responsible for computer backup and the end user is not allowed to change the configuration.

To enable Master Password go to the Options screen, General tab. Click Protect console with master password option and enter the password.

Next time you open the console it will ask you for a password

FTP/SFTP server support

Cloudberry Backup now supports FTP and SFTP servers. With the new version users can backup their data to FTP and SFTP servers that are widely used for data storage. You can find more details in post covering backup to FTP and post covering backup to SFTP.

Master password

We added an ability to set master password in CloudBerry Backup. It may become very useful for IT administrators and users who need to lock software from unauthorized access. Once specified, master password will be required to access Cloudberry Backup, even if it’s already running in background.

Local backup speed improvements

Local backup is an option in CloudBerry Backup that allows backup to local drives, NAS, mapped network drives and network shares. Most of our users found local backup very useful feature but some complained on the low backup speed. In the new version we have improved local backup performance to allow users backup their data locally much faster.

Multiple emails notification

In previous versions Cloudberry Backup users were able to specify only one address for email notifications. From the new version users can set multiple email addresses to receive notification messages on backup completion status. You just have to write email addresses to proper line and separate them from one another with commas.

Clone backup plan

Also we introduced an ability to clone existing backup plans. Now instead of creating new backup plan from scratch users can copy an existing plan and modify it as required.

Ignore self signed SSL certificate

In previous versions backups to online storage with outdated SSL certificate were aborted by the software. Now your backup will run even if an issues with SSL certificate occur. This may be necessary for example for the local OpenStack Swift storage implementations

Backup files < XX MB

We have also added new file filter based on a file size. Now users can specify the maximum size of the files to backup. For example you can set the application to backup only files that are less than 500 Mb, 1000 Mb, 5000 Mb or any other size that fits your requirements.

Highlight local backup

We have also added “Local backup” button to the application welcome screen. It allows to easily access local backup settings. You can find a new button on the left part of the welcome screen as shown on the screenshot below.

With the number of new features CloudBerry Backup becomes more powerful, more flexible and more secure. The addition of FTP/SFTP support, master password, local backup speed improvements, clone backup plan functionality and other described in this post make the product more appealing to broader audience of SMB customers.

How to backup to SFTP using CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry Lab presents a new version of CloudBerry Backup. Now this powerful backup application supports SFTP protocols. It means that CloudBerry Backup users now have an ability to backup their files to SFTP servers with ease and convenience.

SFTP is a protocol that uses Secure Shell to transfer files. SFTP encrypts transmitted files and commands. It makes data transfer over network secure and reliable. SFTP backup feature will become useful for those who prefer using STFP servers to store valuable data.

To start backup to SFTP you have to open your CloudBerry Backup application and start Backup Wizard as usual.

In the storage selection window now you can choose SFTP storage.

If you don’t already have an SFTP account you can create it using your SFTP settings as it is shown on the screenshot below.

Then you have to choose files you want to backup to SFTP server.

You can also setup purge, schedule and email notification options during further steps.

When the backup plan is ready you can run it manually or automatically according to schedule that was configured during the setup process.

How to backup to FTP with CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry Backup now supports backup to FTP servers. New Cloudberry Lab’s application has become even more powerful and functional than before. Now every FTP user can automate backup to FTP using just one convenient application.

FTP is a network protocol which is used to transfer files over a TCP-based networks. When you transfer files from one host to another over the Internet you use FTP. FTP – servers also widely used for keeping and sharing information all over the world. FTP backup feature significantly expands capabilities of the CloudBerry Backup and makes it more useful and convenient for lots of users.

Backup to FTP with CloudBerry Backup is not more complicated than backup to any cloud storage or local drive. To begin backup you just have to open the Backup Wizard and choose FTP in the storage selection window.

If you don’t have an FTP storage account on CloudBerry Backup’s storages list you’ll have to create it as shown on the screenshot below.

On the next step you’ll have to choose files and folders to backup to FTP.

The program will ask you to specify purge and schedule options for your backup plan. Also you can configure email notifications according to your needs.

After configuring an FTP backup plan you can run it manually or wait until the schedule trigger starts your backup automatically.

How to back up SQL Server to Amazon S3 or Amazon Glacier.

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

How to restore SQL Server database from Amazon S3 or Amazon Glacier

How to copy data to SFTP servers with CloudBerry S3 Explorer

A few years ago we added a support for the regular FTP protocol. Since then it became a very popular option and at the same time we have got a numerous requests for SFTP protocol support. In the newer release we are introducing the Secure FTP (SFTP) support. to configure SFTP account go to File | SFTP Account menu

once the account is configured you can do all common file management operations such as

3. create folders

4. rename files

5. delete files

CloudBerry S3 Explorer has supported Glacier for quite some time now. We introduced the Glacier support in September, followed by supporting encryption and compression and finally Amazon S3 to Glacier archiving.

Since the very first release CloudBerry Explorer featured PowerShell extension to automate Amazon S3 and CloudFront tasks. The latest release of CloudBerry Explorer comes with a PowerShell extension that helps users automate Glacier tasks and integrate it with other PowerShell routines. The extension includes commands such as create, delete vaults, copy and move data to Glacier, create Inventory and Retrieval jobs and create Lifecycle policies.

CloudBerry Backup. Move Repository

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

CloudBerry Backup uses local index database called repository to minimize the number of requests to S3. Under certain conditions the database can grow. So it is sometimes necessary to move the repository to another disk with more space. Technically the repository is an SQLite database file called CBBackup.db

By default the repository database is located in the user profile. On Windows Vista/7/8/2008/2012 it is under C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\CloudBerry Backup Server Edition\Data

We have implemented the option to move the repository to another location right from the GUI. Go to Tools | Options | Repository in the program menu. Click the button next to the location and specify the new one. It will require admin permissions to change the location.

On the same page you can see the current size of the repository and there is an option to shrink the database to reduce its size.

Checking network share permissions with CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

CloudBerry Backup supported network locations backup for a long time. in one of the previous releases we even introduced a feature that allows to set specific credentials for each network location However the customers have been still coming across Path not found and similar issues.

With the new release we are improving the network locations permissions check and introducing the new step for the backup wizard. the challenge is that the network location should be accessible for CloudBerry Backup service account as it is running in the background as a Windows Service and may have a different set of permissions in comparison to the user running the configuration wizard. By default CloudBerry Backup service is running under the local system account that doesn't have an access to remote shares. As a result the user running the backup wizard may have access to certain network locations while CloudBerry Backup doesn't. Therefore it is important to set up credentials for each of them.

To further facilitate this process we are introducing the new step of the Backup Wizard called Check Network Shares. It shows up only if you add at least one network share on the Backup Source step. On this step you will have an option to enter credentials for each share and to check if they are accessible for CloudBerry Backup service.

With Amazon Glacier, you can reliably store large or small amounts of data for as little as $0.01 per gigabyte per month.

The latest release of CloudBerry Explorer comes with the ability to display Amazon Glacier storage using the Folder View to make it easier for PC users to work with Glacier.

As we have always kept the full folder structure in the metadata after upgrading to the new version all existing files will show in respective folders.

In the latest release of CloudBerry Explorer PRO v 3.8 we are introducing the Smart Retrieval functionality, that allows you to manage data restore budget in an intelligent way.

When you run a copy for Glacier it will pop up a dialog asking you to specify your peak retrieval rate in MB. It will also allow you to allocate data retrieval to run for a number of hours to stay within a selected budget. This way you can significantly reduced your retrieval costs.

After you set it up, the restore will run in the background retrieving the portions of data every hour. Note, you can also access this dialog from Tools | Options menu

You can monitor the restore progress on the bottom panel.

In the latest release of CloudBerry Backup v 3.2 we are introducing the Smart Restorefunctionality, that allows you to manage data restore budget in an intelligent way.

We have designed a Glacier Smart Restore step of the Restore Wizard. On this step you can specify your peak retrieval rate in MB.

After you set it up, the restore will run in the background retrieving the portions of data every hour. you can monitor the restore progress on the Restore Plans tab

Generating a report with the list of files copied with CloudBerry Backup on each run

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

The email notification has been one of the most popular feature of CloudBerry Backup for a long time. Over the time we improved the email report, added the ability to use custom SMTP server for the server edition and added the ability to report status to the Windows Event Log. With the latest release you can an option to generate a detailed list of files copied with each back up.
To enable this option go to the Notification step of the Backup Wizard and check of the Generate detailed report option.

in this case the report with the list of all files will be generated. you will get an email that you are already familiar with but it will have a new download link

if you click the download link you will get the report with the complete list of files:

How to Archive Amazon S3 data to Glacier with CloudBerry Backup

CloudBerry S3 Backup is a powerful Windows program that automate backup and restore processes to Amazon S3 and Amazon Glacier cloud storage.

Amazon has recently released the functionality that allows easily archive the data from Amazon S3 to Glacier low cost storage. With the latest release of CloudBerry Backup you can take full advantage of that functionality. With the addition of this functionality you almost don't need to perform any specific modifications to your existing backup plans and easily move existing data to Glacier.

The only caveat is that when you do the restore you will need to wait 3-5 hours for the Retrieval Job to complete.

Go to the Tools menu and click Archive to Glacier Settings option.

Or use the Archive option on the panel on the left

The Archive to Glacier Settings dialog will help you choose the data you want to archive, e.g. you can archive selected paths only.
