Verizon Acquires CloudSwitch

NEW YORK –Verizon Communications Inc. announced today that it has acquired CloudSwitch, an innovative provider of cloud software technology, in a deal that will simplify the move to the enterprise cloud and help to boost industry adoption. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Verizon plans to combine CloudSwitch, a privately held company based in Burlington, Mass., with its Terremark IT services subsidiary, further accelerating the company’s global cloud strategy by enhancing Verizon’s hybrid cloud and cloud-to-cloud capabilities.

CloudSwitch brings Verizon breakthrough software that enables enterprises to more easily and securely move applications, or workloads, between company data centers and the cloud without changing the application or the infrastructure layer – eliminating a key barrier to widespread cloud adoption.

With CloudSwitch’s technology, enterprises gain new flexibility and greater control in moving to and from the cloud, while extending security over applications and data. In addition, enterprise applications remain tightly integrated and can be managed as if they are running locally. When combined with Terremark’s advanced IT and security capabilities, this technology further enables total enterprise-class cloud solutions (private-to-public, public-to-public and hybrid) across the globe.

“The cloud market is a rapidly growing opportunity, with very real benefits both for our business customers and the consumers they serve,” said Bob Toohey, president of Verizon’s global enterprise unit. “With the acquisition of CloudSwitch, Verizon has taken another step forward in defining the enterprise cloud.”

John McEleney, CEO of CloudSwitch, said: “By joining Verizon, we will be able to deliver a solution that combines our software with the market-leading infrastructure cloud play. Our founding vision has always been to create a seamless and secure federation of cloud environments across enterprise data centers and global cloud services. Together, we will be able to provide enterprises with an unmatched level of flexibility, scalability and control in the cloud with point-and-click simplicity. This will go a long way in helping achieve widespread adoption of the cloud especially when managing complex workloads.”

Verizon, through its Terremark subsidiary, offers advanced enterprise-class IT, cloud and security services on a global scale. Terremark provides customers with the ability to improve IT infrastructure and boost application performance in today’s complex and dynamic business environment.
We launched our Structure conference in 2008 because we saw the cloud-based infrastructure revolution was going to create new opportunities. As observers, we’ve talked to hundreds of people about cloud computing and its ecosystem. On our Structure channel, we cover the gear and software that comprises the cloud, the services and the people who are changing the industry.

Now for the first time, we’ve decided to condense that knowledge into the Structure 50, a list of the 50 companies that are influencing how the cloud and infrastructure evolves. These are the ones to watch. All of these companies, big or small, have people, technology or strategies that will help shape the way the cloud market is developing and where it will eventually end up.

The award-winning CloudSwitch Enterprise is a downloadable software appliance that installs easily into VMware and Xen environments. Built on CloudSwitch’s patent-pending Cloud Isolation Technology™, CloudSwitch software bridges the enterprise data center with cloud computing services, extending enterprise security and control into the cloud. With CloudSwitch, applications remain tightly integrated with enterprise data center tools and policies, and are managed as if they were running locally. CloudSwitch eliminates the engineering efforts and changes to applications, networking and management tools that were previously required to use the cloud, protecting customers from cloud vendor lock-in.

“Our customers and prospects have prioritized requirements for optimized network performance as they launch and scale their cloud initiatives,” said John McEleney, CEO at CloudSwitch. “Many of our customers have already invested in Riverbed infrastructure in their data centers, and want to extend these trusted resources into the cloud. We’re pleased to offer the best of both worlds, a cloud gateway with in-path support for the market-leading WAN optimization of Riverbed Cloud Steelhead, so customers can realize the full benefits of cloud agility and cost-effectiveness.”

Cloud Steelhead transforms the public cloud into an extension of the data center by eliminating the performance barriers, such as latency and bandwidth constraints, to enterprise-class public cloud deployments. Cloud Steelhead combines the speed and simplicity of a Steelhead® appliance, the elasticity and subscription pricing model of the public cloud, and cloud intelligent features like transparent interception and a portal-based management system to enable organizations to easily install and scale within public cloud environments.

“Working closely with our customers and partners, we’ve learned how important WAN optimization is for their cloud strategies. Whether customers are looking to deploy public cloud or hybrid cloud solutions, with Cloud Steelhead, CloudSwitch customers are able to accelerate access to the business critical applications and data that reside in the cloud, while ensuring optimal performance for end users,” said Venugopal Pai, vice president, global alliances at Riverbed.

On May 4, 2011, CloudSwitch and Riverbed will present a live webinar, “Optimizing Your WAN Connectivity for Hybrid Cloud Deployments,” to discuss the joint solution and its benefits for customers.
Scaling Cloud Deployments

As customers design and scale their cloud deployments, they have recognized the importance of WAN optimization for enhanced performance and reduced total cost of ownership in the cloud. As part of the partnership, Riverbed solutions enable CloudSwitch customers to optimize their network performance for file access, data movement and application connectivity between cloud resources and internal data centers or private clouds. In addition, customers can dramatically improve cost-effectiveness by reducing investments in network bandwidth required for cloud initiatives.

To address customer requirements for WAN optimization, CloudSwitch has added support for the Cloud Steelhead appliance, including:

Point-and-click deployment of Cloud Steelhead in-path with cloud resources

Simplified configuration of Cloud Steelhead with automatic peering and no client agents

Full disk encryption of data in transit and at rest

What’s the cloud without the software and applications that ride on it? This is where the true value of cloud computing starts to emerge. From productivity apps and CRM suites to software that manages cloud apps and deployments and enables the creation of hybrid clouds, this category is extremely broad and runs the gamut.

CRN catalogs "the cloud software and apps vendors that are doing something different, something fresh or something unique. Or, they’re doing something so simple in the cloud that it creates a face-palm moment of "why didn’t I think of that?"

CloudSwitch eliminates the engineering efforts and changes to applications, networking and management tools that were previously required to use the cloud, protecting customers from cloud lock-in.

“Working with our customers and prospects we are seeing a growing level of sophistication and confidence in how these organizations are using the cloud,” said John McEleney, CEO at CloudSwitch. “They’re expanding beyond the initial development and test scenarios into larger, more customer-facing applications.
Software company aims to help users of cloud computing port their existing applications to cloud service providers with as little hassle as possible. One early adopter of CloudSwitch, a large pharmaceutical company that prefers to keep its use of the technology under wraps for now, has tested the software’s ability to simplify management of applications hosted in an internal data center and in the cloud. The company’s IT service architect says early runs have shown promise.

CloudSwitch is an early leader in cloud for a simple reason; it has correctly identified the opportunity in the enterprise market for public cloud and the technology needed to get there. With a premise something along the lines of KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid), CloudSwitch lets you "drag and drop" select VMware environments onto a public cloud service without any fancy footwork.

CloudSwitch software delivers enterprise security in the cloud

London, July 7th 2010 -- The first Cloud Security Challenge competition sponsored by HP Labs has been won by CloudSwitch, Inc. based in Burlington, MA, USA. Judged by a panel of expert judges drawn from industry, CloudSwitch beat strong contenders from all over the world. Commenting on their win, Keith Harrison of HP Labs said, “This product provides the timely capability for companies to start taking advantage of cloud computing.” The award brings with it a $10,000 USD cash grant and mentorship from the CapGemini organization. This inaugural competition was provided by the Global Security Challenge (GSC), the international leader of innovation challenges in security.

CloudSwitch delivers the enterprise gateway to the cloud. CloudSwitch’s innovative software appliance enables enterprises to run their existing applications in the right cloud computing environment—securely, simply and without changes. With CloudSwitch, applications remain tightly integrated with enterprise data center tools and policies, and can be moved easily between different cloud environments and back into the data center based on the requirements of the business. Backed by Matrix Partners, Atlas Ventures and Commonwealth Capital Ventures, CloudSwitch is based in Burlington, MA and is led by seasoned entrepreneurs from BMC, EMC, Netezza, RSA, SolidWorks and Sun Microsystems. For more information about CloudSwitch, please visit www.cloudswitch.com.

Commenting on their win, CloudSwitch co-founder Ellen Rubin said, “We are delighted to be named as winners of the Cloud Security Challenge. Following the successful launch of the commercial version of our CloudSwitch Enterprise software, we’re working closely with enterprise customers and partners to make the cloud a secure extension of the data center.”

Commenting on the competition, Richard Wilson Director of the GSC added, “I applaud all the entrants in the Cloud Security Challenge. The standard and sheer number of entries was overwhelming and made judging this growing sector very hard. After long deliberation the judges were unanimous in their verdict however and CloudSwitch were the worthy winners.”

CloudSwitch will be presented their trophy at the GSC Summit in London later this year where the 5th Annual Global Security Challenge will take place. Start-ups and SME’s will compete for cash grants totaling $500,000 provided by the US Department of Defense. Entries to this competition will still be accepted up to August 6th 2010. For details of how to enter this and other GSC challenges go to www.globalsecuritychallenge.com.

"LTech has always been focused on connecting businesses to the cloud, and I see CloudSwitch as the answer for enterprises who want to move their applications and infrastructure to Amazon’s EC2 cloud quickly and securely," said Michael DeSilver, SVP of Cloud Services at LTech. "CloudSwitch should be an integral part of any company's overall cloud strategy and I'm proud to say we're their partner.”

As of today, the CloudSwitch Enterprise commercial version is generally available for download at www.cloudswitch.com. In addition, the free CloudSwitch Explorer version is available for developers and IT professionals who want to explore the cloud with no risk. Both the Explorer and Enterprise versions target the EC2 cloud and are built on CloudSwitch’s patent-pending Cloud Isolation Technology™ that secures all data and communications end-to-end and automatically maps applications into the target cloud. Once the CloudSwitch software appliance has been deployed in a virtualized environment, the customer can select Windows and Linux applications and run them in the cloud easily and securely, with no engineering efforts. CloudSwitch eliminates the changes to applications, networking and management tools that were previously required to use the cloud, and protects customers from cloud lock-in.
CloudSwitch Enterprise Ready for Business

Breakthrough Software Appliance Now Generally Available After Successful Beta Program

Structure 2010, San Francisco, Calif. — June 23, 2010 — CloudSwitch, Inc. today announced that it has launched the commercial version of its CloudSwitch Enterprise software. Enterprises can now move existing, multi-tiered applications to the right cloud with point-and-click simplicity and no modifications. CloudSwitch’s innovative software bridges the enterprise data center with cloud computing services, extending enterprise security and control into the cloud. With CloudSwitch, applications remain tightly integrated with enterprise data center tools and policies, and are managed as if they were running locally.

CloudSwitch Enterprise is a downloadable software appliance that installs easily into VMware and Xen environments. Customers can move Windows and Linux virtual machines to the Amazon EC2 and Terremark clouds, and run their applications in the cloud using existing management and monitoring tools. Enterprises who want to make the cloud a secure and seamless extension of their data centers can do this starting today with CloudSwitch.

“Enterprise customers have told us clearly that they want the cloud’s benefits of increased agility at lower cost – but without the engineering efforts, security concerns and potential lock-in currently required,” said John McEleney, CEO at CloudSwitch. “CloudSwitch delivers the cloud as an integrated, secure addition to their existing IT infrastructure, making cloud adoption simple yet incredibly powerful.”

“Public cloud computing entices enterprise clients with an opportunity to potentially reduce costs as well as respond more quickly to the needs of their business, but it comes with some challenges as well,” said Cameron Haight, Research Vice President, Gartner, Inc. “Lock-in, security and lack of management visibility represent three of the largest issues IT organizations have with the public cloud. Enterprises looking to move to the cloud should be on the lookout for products that can act to alleviate these issues in both a cost effective and easy to use manner.”

Successful Beta Program
CloudSwitch has been working closely with beta customers and partners since late 2009, deploying and testing the product with many mid-tier and large enterprises. In March 2010, CloudSwitch launched the public beta for its free CloudSwitch Explorer as well as the free trial version of CloudSwitch Enterprise. Hundreds of enterprises from all over the world, across a wide range of industries and sizes of organizations participated in the beta program, providing invaluable input on product features and roadmap. Beta customers included F500 companies in the pharmaceutical, financial services and ISV markets. As a result of this successful beta program, CloudSwitch is now ready to make both versions of its software generally available.

Both the Explorer and Enterprise versions are built on CloudSwitch’s patent-pending Cloud Isolation Technology™ that secures all data and communications end-to-end and automatically maps applications into the target cloud.

Multi-Cloud Support & Enterprise Controls
CloudSwitch Enterprise is designed for full enterprise security, scaling and control. Enterprise users can move applications between the data center and cloud environments seamlessly and securely. Key features include:

Support for Amazon EC2 and Terremark’s VMware-based clouds (enabled through the vCloud API)

Full encryption of data and communications through AES-256

Role-based access controls for setting user/group permissions and controls

Support for Windows and Linux-based applications

Industry-first CloudFit™ for best fit of virtual instances into cloud resources

Layer-2 bridge between data center and cloud environments

API for programmatic control and integration into virtualized environments

Pricing and Availability
A free 15-day trial of CloudSwitch Enterprise is available now at www.cloudswitch.com for customer evaluations. Pricing begins at $25,000 for an annual license including basic support and up to 20 virtual machines under management in the cloud. Cloud usage fees are paid separately to the cloud provider. Additional pricing for scaling cloud deployments is available. For developers and IT professionals who want to explore the cloud and test initial applications, CloudSwitch offers a free Explorer version of its software.
Live Webinar From CloudSwitch on Securing the Public Cloud for the Enterprise

Making the Public Cloud Work Like a Private Cloud

Burlington, Mass. — April 28, 2010 — CloudSwitch, Inc. today announced a live webinar on May 11, 2010 featuring guest speaker David Mortman, Director of Operations and Security at C3 and former CISO at Siebel Systems along with Shawn Henry, Vice President of Engineering at CloudSwitch.

Many companies would like to take advantage of cloud computing, but concerns about possible security breaches and loss of data hold them back. For cloud computing to gain traction in the enterprise, IT and security executives need to be certain that their company’s applications and data are safe and under IT’s control.

In the live presentation, David Mortman will explore concerns with cloud security including loss of control and monitoring, lack of auditing and enterprise-grade encryption, as well as the perceived lack of enterprise-grade intrusion detection, disaster recovery and compliance. This will be followed by an overview of how enterprises are starting to embrace the cloud and ensuring that cloud-based resources can run under full enterprise control using CloudSwitch software. Real enterprise use cases will be presented, followed by a Q&A session with the speakers.

Webinar: “How to Secure the Public Cloud for the Enterprise”

WATCH ON DEMAND >

About the Presenters:
David Mortman, Director of Operations and Security at C3, has a proven track record in leading security teams and setting security strategy at several companies, including C3, Siebel Systems, Network Associates, Securosis and Echelon One. David is a regular presenter at RSA and Black Hat and has also presented at SOURCE Boston, Information Security Decisions and the CSO World Congress.

Shawn Henry, VP of Engineering at CloudSwitch, has extensive experience building secure, world-class software solutions in the enterprise and SaaS space. Most recently, Shawn was Senior Director of Engineering and Chief Architect at RSA Security (now the security division of EMC), where he built and led the team responsible for delivering the Consumer Authentication line of products. Under Shawn's leadership, the Consumer Product group protected over 200 million online accounts.

About CloudSwitch
CloudSwitch delivers the enterprise gateway to the cloud. CloudSwitch’s innovative software appliance enables enterprises to move their existing applications to the right cloud computing environment—securely, simply and without changes.
CloudSwitch Opens Beta Program To Drive Enterprise Cloud Exploration

Free Version of Innovative Software Appliance Moves VMware-based Applications to the Amazon EC2 Cloud

Burlington, Mass. — March 1, 2010 — CloudSwitch, Inc. today announced that it has launched its beta program for CloudSwitch Explorer. For the first time, enterprises can move existing, multi-tiered applications to the Amazon EC2 cloud with point-and-click simplicity and no modifications. CloudSwitch’s innovative software bridges the enterprise data center with cloud computing services, extending enterprise security and control into the cloud. With CloudSwitch, applications remain tightly integrated with enterprise data center tools and policies, and are managed as if they were running locally.

CloudSwitch Explorer is a free, downloadable software appliance that installs easily into VMware environments. It supports a single user and up to five Windows and Linux virtual machines in the Amazon EC2 cloud. IT professionals and developers who want to explore the cloud simply and securely can do this starting today with CloudSwitch.

“We want any enterprise that’s interested in exploring the cloud to feel confident that they can do this easily, without re-engineering their applications,” said John McEleney, CEO at CloudSwitch. “The cloud offers a fast, scalable and low-cost alternative to traditional corporate data centers, and our goal at CloudSwitch is to extend the internal IT infrastructure to a wide range of cloud services in a simple and secure way.”

Growing Beta Program
CloudSwitch has been working closely with early beta customers and partners since late 2009. The private beta program included several mid-tier and large enterprises in the telecommunications, healthcare and pharmaceuticals industries, among others. Based on this feedback, CloudSwitch has continued to develop and improve its beta offerings, and is making the CloudSwitch Explorer version available for free so a broad range of customers can access the cloud with no risk. At the same time, the CloudSwitch Enterprise commercial version is available in an expanded beta program for enterprises that are ready for larger cloud deployments, with multiple users and groups.

Both the Explorer and Enterprise versions are built on CloudSwitch’s patent-pending Cloud Isolation Technology™ that secures all data and communications end-to-end and automatically maps applications into the target cloud. Once the CloudSwitch software appliance has been deployed in a virtualized environment, the customer can select Windows and Linux applications and move them to the cloud easily, with no engineering efforts. CloudSwitch eliminates the changes to applications, networking and management tools that were previously required to use the cloud, and protects customers from cloud lock-in.

“CloudSwitch has arrived in the market at the right time and place,” said William Fellows, Principal Analyst at the 451 Group. “Experimentation with basic applications in the public cloud and planning for eventual bridging of internal and public clouds is happening across most industry segments, and CloudSwitch is well-positioned to drive enterprise cloud adoption.”

Pricing and Availability
CloudSwitch Explorer and CloudSwitch Enterprise beta versions are available now at www.cloudswitch.com. Explorer is always free, while Enterprise pricing begins at $25,000 for an annual license including basic support and up to 20 virtual machines under management in the cloud. Cloud usage fees are paid separately to the cloud provider. Additional pricing for scaling cloud deployments is available. CloudSwitch provides a 15-day free trial version of the Enterprise version for customer evaluations.
