Children's and Teachers' Day 2011

What a WET fun-filled day!
It was the first time we had so much Water Play in school. The children came into the school with swimsuits. Angels’ grandparents also came in early to help setting up the swimming pools.
At 9.30 a.m., we started our warm up. The children were grouped into two groups and Aunties demonstrated how the telematch was to be played.

First, the children had to soak up water from a pail and squeeze out the water into another pail. Second, they had to scoop a coloured ball from the first swimming pool and sort it according to its colour in the 4 pails (practical life skill!). Then, they slid down the slide and splashed into the 2nd pool, quickly pick up a water shooting tube to aim and shoot at the bottles.

There were one or two children who were not used to water play and were afraid to get wet despite wearing very nice swimsuits. To get them “going”, Auntie Chaz Yee started pouring pails of water at those children. It was not long after, the Aunties and Angel’s Grandma were having fun pouring big pails of water at the children. Some children started to get back at the Aunties (e.g., Zhi Jean picked up the water shooting tube and started shooting at Auntie Latifah! Haha!).

At about 10.15 a.m., the children went into the building and changed. They were all very helpful and practical-life-skilled children, helping Aunties to set up the dining tables. We had guests children like Jael, Alfred (Angel’s brother), Anastasia (Angel’s cousin), Mita (Auntie Margaret’s daughter) and Trevor (Tristan’s brother). They enjoyed the company of their new friends. While the Aunties were busy setting up the dining area, Angel’s Grandparents volunteered to clean up all the outdoor equipment for us, so kind of them!

Finally, we had the Teachers’ Day presentation session. The children presented their little cards and gifts to the Aunties to show their appreciation for their Teachers. This was a chance that Zhi Hui took to show off her photography skill (her father trained her well!). Although she hadn’t gotten anything for the Teachers, she assisted Du Ee & Ze Ming to make their Teachers’ Day cards at home, good effort! Umasivu also stood up to say her gratitude to Auntie Latifah & Auntie Chazyee. “Auntie Latifah, I Love You!” Gabriel Wong said it loud and clear enough that almost made Auntie Latifah tear.

Growing the Algae - Proterozoic Era

After learning and getting all excited about volcanoes, the children were introduced to the next era in the History of the Earth -- the Proterozoic Era, where the first life began.

Oceans were formed then due to consistent rain over many years. Micro-organism started to grow in the water and it was the first life seen on Earth. Algae was one of the first few plants appeared in that era. Hence, we let the children grow Algae in a tank.

Auntie Shirin brought in the sand and algae, and showed children how to plant it in the water. The children were excited about putting water into the tank (see video below). They also touched the algae, which was at that stage in a rough hairy state.

After they have planted the algae in the tank for a few days, the algae turned slimy. Again, the children touched the algae and felt the difference. This stimulated the young minds in awe in terms of how the state of a living thing changed after being nourished by water and sunlight.

Making an Erupting Volcano - Azoic Era

Our children continued their learnig of the "History of the Earth" after doing the ribbon timeline of Earth History.

After Big Bang, the temperature dropped a lot, however, it was still very hot as compared to now. The Earth entered the Dark era -- AZOIC ERA. The ground, especially, was very hot, fire erupted from the ground, burst through the crust and formed Volcanoes.

Auntie Latifah made a model of Volcano so to do an Erupting Volcano experiment with children. It was a masterpiece!

First, we needed some vinegar, bicarbonate soda, red food colouring (for the lava), and water. Children saw how Aunties put these "ingredients" into the conduit of the volcano, and they were all amazed by the "eruption"!

OK, next it was the children's turn to make their own volcanoes! Auntie Latifah took the trouble to go to the hardware shop, requesting for the pipes to be sawed into about 4 inches each, to make the conduit of the volcano. Stick the pipe in the centre of the plate by using plasticine. Then, crush some newspaper around the conduit, fasten them with masking tape.

Once the general shape of the volcano is formed, the children sticked the soggy paper around the "volcano". We let the volcanoes dry over a few days before the children painted their volacano. They all did well!

They brought home their volcanoes and their mummies and daddies extended the learning by making the volcano erupt at home!

Happy Easter 2011

Clover children were very busy for the past two weeks as they were busy doing egg-related activities for Easter. Some of them made the Easter Eggs, all of them made the bunny ears and tails and did an Egg Race on the Good Friday. (Go to our Photo Gallery for more pictures).

Making of the Easter Eggs

Auntie Shirin planned for the KidsArtFun children to make an Easter Egg from scratch. Yes, from SCRATCH.

The children needed to empty an egg before starting their art work on the egg. In order to empty an egg yet not destroying the ovoid structure, poke both ends of an egg, shake it to break the yolk inside the egg, then blow out the content.

1. Poke both ends of an egg. 2. Shake it. 3. Blow out the content.

Now, don't waste it. Cook it and eat it!!

(Children love cooking, but without much experience, some of them put too much salt. It was very nice of Gabriel to offer Auntie Chaz Yee his egg, so Auntie Chaz Yee had to force herself to eat the ultra salty scrambled egg ... but couldn't swallow it all and had to throw away half of it. Yikes!)

Tristan has his dad's gene ... great chef! Uma is grinning from ear to ear...happily cooking her egg.

Alright, now the children are done with their cooking. Next is the beginning of the real work of painting the Easter Egg. See the little artists at work!

Making of the Little Bunny Ears & Tails

First, the children coloured the front of the bunny ears cut out from manila cards by the Teachers. Then they rolled and pasted the cotton onto the front and back of the ears. Then attach them to the hair band, wear it on the head and that's it, the bunny ears. Next, glue the cotton onto the round card which makes the tail. Attach the tailto the back of the pants, tada!

The Egg RACE

On the Good Friday, which was also our P.E. day, children did an egg race --- balancing an egg in a spoon and walked quickly to the bowl, placed it in the bowl and hop back to their team. They were all very cute... focusing and walking with extra care which we seldom see in the active children.

Mrs De Silva awarded Life Member of Royal Academy of Dance (England)

Congratulations to our beloved Mrs De Silva for being awarded the Life Membership of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), England. RAD is one of the world's most influential dance education and training organisations. Its classical ballet examintion syllabus is regarded as the best.

We are always proud of her being a dedicated and honourable Teacher for more than half of her life. As we all know, it is a big honour to pass the examinations of the Royal Academy of Dance (England). She did it decades ago and had also become a Teaching Member of the RAD more than 20 years!

Being a talented lady since young, she excels in ballet, creative Modern Dance, European Folk Dancing and Artistic & Rhythmic Gymnastics. She is also a Physical Education specialist who specialises in Labau Movement Training and Coaching Swimming and Life Saving skills.

Her vast talents and teaching experience have brought her students to different heights during their training with her.

She is now teaching at our Clover Learning Centre, focusing in teaching Ballet (4 years old to adults) during weekends, training the students to qualify for cerification in the Royal Academy of Dance (England). She is also teaching Fun Dancing to boys and girls of age 3.5 to 6 years old on every Monday.

Happy Chinese New Year!

As an annual lesson plan, we told the story about the origin of Chinese New Year (CNY). It all began with the Monster "Nian" (年). It seemed that the children are never tired of this story even though we tell it every year.

We had very busy weeks before the CNY this year. We did the History of the Earth, and we also needed to cover the story and talkabouts of CNY. The Aunties were exhausted but as excited as ever.

Story-telling about the Origin of the Chinese New Year.

We did Food Tasting as usual. The children were all eager to try the various types of food. Some even attempted the spicy crackers.

We also borrowed the mini Lion Dance prop and drum from Zhi Hui and Zhi Jean. Auntie Margaret did a very fun demonstration on how to dance the Lion (we now see her talent in Kung Fu). Auntie Liew played the Chinese Drum. The children then had their turn to dance the Lion. Everyone had a good laugh. They were so funny and cute!

The History of the Earth (Part 1) - The Big Bang Theory & Black Timeline

The Big Bang Theory

"It all started as small as a pin-head and it expanded --- getting bigger, bigger, bigger, and...pop! Then the stars started to appear and wind came about."

The children listened and watched the balloon which Auntie Latifah blew up, while enduring the darkness and heat in the room. We tried to simulate the condition before the Big Bang, only switching on the fan when it started to have wind after the Big Bang (well, after the Balloon burst), which was the start of the Universe. Meanwhile, Auntie Shirin also played the mp3 sound of what was supposed to be heard right after the Big Bang.

Wow, what a great effort all Aunties had put in, ensuring the kids get all the right stimulation to learn about the Big Bang Theory (Visual, Auditory, Thermic senses are all covered here).

We did the Big Bang craft the following week (see collage below), didn't expect the children found it hard to break an egg.

The Black Timeline

Well, lots of things happened after the Big Bang. To give the children an overview, we used the Black ribbon to represent the Eras before human appeared on Earth. With the short little red ribbon at the end of the timeline (represents the time Human Beings exist) as compared to the long black ribbon -- It was a very good visual representation of how little time we as Human Beings have existed.

In order to let the children get the idea of the various Eras (from the Azoic "Black" era, to the Mesozoic "Dinosaurs" era, to the Cenozoic "Ice Age" era), the story needed to be told well. The narrator role fell on Auntie Chaz Yee, the Drama Queen. The children listened so attentively that, one of the 4-year-olds (Bong Yi) even shivered when A. Chaz Yee talked about the Ice Age. He looked cold despite us not even switching on the air-conditioner!

Pictures below: Children holding the black ribbon, which represents the Black Timeline after Big Bang and before the Human Beings exist. The Black ribbon was unrolled as the story was told.

We repeated this exercise the next day, and to our surprise a 2.5-year-old (Ze Ming) responded with the most accurate answer "Jellyfish started to appear" for the era when ocean was formed!

WOW, this is so amazing. Once again, we take our hats off Dr. Maria Montessori. She really knows the children so well that the children still benefit greatly from her learning plan after more than 100 years!

Give the Poor a Chance in Education

I always have a mission of my own to help the less fortunate, especially in Health and Education. This led me to read Psychology to learn more about human's mental health during my undergraduate days. Education has always been my passion. To provide education to others went a long way when I was a student, saving each penny overseas to pay for living expenses and also sponsoring kids in the third world. It lasted for a few years though, I had to stop and start pursuing my dream using the pennies saved.

Life goes on for me pretty well although stressful. I am happy now that I have two beautiful kids of my own, but I never stop thinking about those kids in the third world. With the birth of my second child, I am contented to have a good team as a family. It is also time to continue the mission of extending Education to the needies.

Hence, I have applied to sponsor two kids with World Vision, one for Clover, one for my husband and I. We shall continue to work towards sponsoring more kids in the future, locally or overseas, whenever help is needed.

It is not difficult to sponsor kids in the third world, we hope more people will join in to make the world a better place.

Another Inspiration - Bali Green School

This is another inspirational school that inspires me. It was reported on BBC, CNN, ABC and also on Malaysia Star newspaper. Bringing the children out in the nature for a lesson is a common thing to do at Bali Green School.

I have always been a dreamer since young, fantasizing various things that I can do in life. Most of the visions have been realised. For this, I have to thank my parents who created a business out of nothing but pure hardwork and humble attitudes towards life in order to provide for all the children in the family. Hence, I have developed empathy towards the less fortunate with my down-to-earth and humble background. At the same time, I have been exposed to various cultures when I did volunteer jobs at hospitals, schools and summer camps in Singapore, U.K. and the U.S.A. respectively.

After founding this Clover school, my principle is to provide something for the children to give back to the society. Yes, I want to provide the best education that I think for preschoolers and kindergarteners, and at the same time giving something back without monetary return. This is why our "ABC Music & Me" program for the 2 to 4-year-olds comes F.O.C. for parents.

However, this is definitely not enough to reach out to those less fortunate students who cannot afford good education. I have time and energy constraint. I hope one day I can do like what the Bali Green School is doing - giving out bursaries to the needies. This needs a good team of people to work together, I still need to find the ropes to do that.

In Bali Green School, the curriculum works towards the cambridge examinations. This does not hinder any of the curriculum which includes learning about the nature, hands-on with everything and anything, including eating plants and fruits everyday that the children are taught to plant and harvest. This is a dream school that I yearn to work in. I don't mind working for others again because I can do my part to help in contributing to the world.

Many parents told me I have done a lot for their child(ren), they are lucky to have found this little Clover land. However, I know it is still a long way to go to reach out to more, especially those who are less fortunate. Researching on Bali Green School will definitely give a light to my vision for Clover. My next step is to visit them, the people who make this "miracle" happen, to help me help those in need.

Excursion to Malay Cultural Village (31 July 2010)

This trip was planned to link to the Cultural theme that we are working on this year -- Malaysia Project.

The weather on the day before the excursion was real bad - stormy rain and greyish sky. I prayed on that night before going to bed for a nice weather, wishing hard for a good head start for the children at least in the next morning. I think my prayer was heard, thank you.

Our children looked smart wearing the Clover T-shirts. This design has been on my mind for a long time, wanting to make it simple without any advertisement (like the phone numbers or address) printed on the T. The children looked smart, and easy to be spotted on. Should have done this a long time ago.

Each child was also assigned a "buddy" to take care of, so that they were given a responsibility and would not run wild. They are all obedient kids, who were sensible to take care of themselves and at the same time keeping an eye on their "buddy".

One of the highlights was Batik Painting. The children were given a presentation of the materials used to make Batik, and how it was done. The interesting part was it was not difficult to paint Batik at all. We only needed to follow 3 simple steps -- Paint with water first, then the colour, then water again. That was it!

The children went off painting their Batik after the demonstration. It was quite an experience for them!

After the Batik painting, we visited the plantation. Lots of fruits were "missing". Some due to not harvesting, some due to the storm on the day before. What a disappointment. Nevertheless, it was fun to see the pewter-making demonstration. The manual peeling of the coconut husk was also very interesting. Strength and technique were the key-words. We were also shown the rubber-tapping procedure. Our tour guide (the lady in the orange T-shirt) asked the children to answer her quiz -- "Name three products made of rubber." Some of our older children gave the answers quickly, we were very proud of them.

We also made small tiny rubber balls using the latex from the rubber tree. However, most of our children's rubber balls were grey in colour, rather than the usual white. Guess their habit of touching things around them collected the dust on their little hands. If I could remember, only Tristan's rubber ball was white and bouncy.

The Malay Cultural dance was also very entertaining. The children were shown the ang klongs before the performance started.

They were also asked to sing Rasa Sayang. Luckily we had trained them to sing this song in school for the upcoming Parents Morning. We were very proud (really proud) of our children when they could sing this traditional Malay song loud and clear.

It was a very fulfilling trip. We, as teachers, enjoyed it as much as the children.

Annual Kindermusician Workshop- Orff Shulwerk

I have always looked forward to the Annual Kindermusik workshop. Although this means we have to put aside our work and family for 3 whole days, and going back to the reality right after the training, it is always refreshing despite the tiredness.

Trying to remember it as long as I can what we have been taught in the 3 days is something that is very hard for me too. Especially when I am expecting now. However, this year is the best year that I think the workshop has suited me. Very, very well-written notes by Ginette really helps me to concentrate more on the practical of the workshop than requires me to jot down the notes by myself. Thank you Ginette, you are the best!

This workshop has opened my eyes to the work of Orff Shulwerk, and how PROCESS always matters more than results. The pedagogy is so step-by-step that I feel it is easy for the young children to perform a complicated work in a simple way!

Shirin, our other Kindermusik@Clover educator, has also enjoyed it very much!

Our group project -- coming up with a performance on instruments and entertainment within 2 hours, is never a tough task for great Kindermusician!

This is our dear Ginette. Being a friend, colleague and trainer, she has shown her patience and competencies to help us reach to another level. Love you Ginette!

Pick up your baby and dance! Dance the Charleston, the Tango, the Cha-Cha and learn why dancing with your baby helps develop vital learning skills - from head-to-toe. In this class, play a variety of baby appropriate instruments, a dance with fun props.

Your Home Materials (imported from U.S.A.)

- CD featuring songs from class

- 1 yellow egg shaker & 1 Kindermusik scarf

- A picture board book (non-toxic) Do-Si-Do with lithing move-to-it rhyming text.

- A set of Art banners for the nursery wall that strengthens vision and promotes early literacy.

Lessons are conducted on Saturdays, once a week. There are 8 lessons for this theme (1 semester).

(4.5 to 8 years old)

Lesson Day: Every Saturday

Lesson Time: 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

We prepare our students for the

Grades Examinations and

Vocational Examinations

of the

Royal Academy of Dance,

United Kingdom.

Are we doing too much for our child?

China, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan and Hong Kong are some countries which preschools emphasize a lot on academic achievement. However, there are a lot of schools and education system in other countries which inspire me. When I see how they operate, they remind me a lot of the Montessori philosophy.

I just came across an article on Japanese preschool. A China mom was shocked over the preschool system in Kyoto when she sent her daughter there. The article stated 12 things that stunned her. A smile went across my face when I was reading it. What she wrote has clearly reflected the difference between the Chinese and Japanese education system. The Japanese system advocates independence, bravery, inner and outer strength of a child. The Japanese moms neither help their young child to carry bags nor change clothes. As a result, the Japanese children are all cheerful little angels with smiles on their faces at all times. (To check out this interesting article, click here.)

Why is that so? INDEPENDENCE leads to SELF-ESTEEM. Remember I mentioned this in my "Are Practical Life activities so important?" blog?

In addition, there are forest kindergartens in Germany, Switzerland, Scotland, England and the USA, operating in woodland teaching children from 3 to 6 years old. The children at the age of 4 are allowed to use a knife without supervision. We see freedom within limitation here. The children are well aware of the consequence of misusing a knife, hence they are extra careful. Independence! Children learn academic subjects through activities in nature. These children can ease through their primary school very well after they have left the forest kindergarten, because they are more coordinated and willing to work out solutions to problems on their own. Bravo!

So, are we doing too much for our children which indirectly impede their development, especially in independence? Many children have "kakak" doing everything for them at home. The children may start to wonder, "Am I incapable of accomplishing the task? Kakak and other adults are more capable." This may lower the self-esteem of a child, which indirectly discourages her to learn in all aspects.

I have seen this happening a lot in the past few years of teaching. Some parents are willing to take my advice and start involving their children in household chores. I see a great difference after a child has become more independent. She is usually confident about herself and is happy and willing to take up challenge to learn new things.
