We are heading into a 2 week window of heavy race intensity with K2 Speed Camp, Art Tommy Memorial followed by K2 provincials. All of them brand new to our organizing committees. I am confident we can keep up the MSM race standard of highly efficient, on time, fair races.

In a conversation with SQA last week, our club received a fantastic compliment that I wanted to share with everyone. ”….your team put on a fantastic CJP race and we would like it if all clubs could run an event as well as your team” This was followed with a discussion of trying to use the race standard we have and replicate around the province. NICE! Congratulations to all who worked on the race. You were great at your job and it showed!

Let’s keep up the standard and show them how it is done! And have fun doing it!

Please note the following schedule change: The Championship weekend for the K2s and Juniors will now see both age groups running together on the same dates at the same venues. So the schedule will now show a K2/Jr GS at Calabogie on Saturday March 3rd and a K2/Jr Slalom at Camp Fortune on Sunday March 4.

The season has started with a bang for the MSM K2 team, with several podium finishes.

On Saturday at the opening race of the season the MSM women showed they are right in the top group of the zone, with Caroline Murray finishing 2nd and Sara Gern finishing 4th. On the men’s side, a difficult second set wreaked havoc on the field, the MSM men persevered finishing 1st and 2nd (Alexis Bernier and Justin Hurteau) in the race.

Sunday in the first GS of the year, the strong showing from the women continued, with Caroline Murray (2nd) and Sara Gern (5th) once again on the podium. On the men’s side it was complete domination by MSM athletes. After the first run it was Hurteau and Bernier sitting 1st and 2nd, with MSM NCO athletes Ben Beaudoin, Jacob Beumer, and Rowan Courtenay rounding out the top 5. After a slow and challenging second run was complete the positions were re-ordered but the names remained the same. Beumer had a fabulous second run taking the win, and was followed by Hurteau, Beaudoin, Bernier, and Courtenay taking the following spots while sweeping the top 5 for MSM.

Serving notice of his return after a multi-year hiatus, and with perhaps the most impressive result of the weekend, Fletcher Smith showed that he is able to compete with the best in the zone with a 6th place finish on Sunday. It feels like only a matter of time before we see him on the podium.

Hi Folks,

Happy New Year. I
hope you had a good holiday and are well rested for the upcoming alpine season
at Club Mont Ste. Marie.

Our first race weekend starts with a set up on January 20th. Mark Sommers is the Chief of Race and he’s looking for help! We’re short people, in non-official positions like course crew and gate judging, and we’re short official roles (level 2) including Chief of Course, Assistant Chief of Course, Start Referee, and Finish Referee.

Please review the volunteer opportunities and see if you
can help out.

The sheet is here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AtyNsVipcB1FdFZxV3hVMjI0UVhXVHc4bTZUaEt5OWc&hl=en_US#gid=0

It takes over 30 people on the hill to run a race, so you
can see that this is volunteer-intensive sport.
Thank you so much for your efforts, and remember: “Never has so much been done, by so few,
for so many.” (adapted from Sir Winston Churchill .

Many thanks,

Posted:
02 Jan 2012 01:11 PM PSTI had a great time over the Christmas break these last couple weeks. Its honestly one of
the rare times when I wasn’t fully ready to leave and get back to business,
but alas I have little control over that!I spent a nice few days at home before heading up to Mont Ste Marie with my family for
Christmas. I was pretty burnt out from skiing after over a month of intense
World Cup and NorAm racing, so I decided I wasn’t going to ski until at least
a few days after Christmas. I had a great time lounging around and generally
not doing a whole lot of anything important for a few days up there before
going back down to the city for a couple days to hang out with friends. I had
my now annual Christmas get together with my close friends, then went to see
deadmau5 play at the new CE Centre.

I finally ended up skiing for a half day on the 29th, but the conditions combined with
the fact that I only had GS skis quickly forced me back to the warmth of the
chalet. Not to mention it was -22 that morning!! Yes I am now a wuss, too
much time spent in warm European winters (it’s -2 right now here in
Switzerland). I will however play hockey outside regardless of temperature!
Got out on the rink almost every day at MSM to play with a good crew of
parents and young racers, wicked times. It was really great to see everyone
up at MSM. Everyone seemed in pretty good spirits even though there is a huge
lack of snow on the hill!

On Christmas Eve my family attended the annual carolling held at the MSM lodge, and I was
very surprised to be presented with a huge banner signed by a lot of the kids
from the Club wishing me luck for the rest of the season. I was literally
speechless when I took the mic to say thanks! I think pretty much all I
managed to get out was just that, ‘thanks!’ So a huge thank you to all the kids
and I hope it brings me some speed and luck for the rest of the year! I also
had an extremely nice visit from our across the street neighbours, the
Gilmour girls, Julia & Nicola. They came over the night before I left to
wish me luck and give me a handmade card. It was really sweet, thanks a
million girls! And sorry I don’t have the picture yet…

As I said I wasn’t quite ready to leave yet, but reality called and I flew out on New
Years Eve (thanks coaches?!?!) to Europe. I’m currently in Veyssonaz, SUI,
training for a few days before the Adelboden GS race on the 7th. It’s pretty
warm here but we managed to get a decent, if a bit rough, session in today.
Hope everyone had a great holiday, and a happy (safe New Year!

Snow! The most I can remember at MSM in recent memory. Too bad not much of it was on the hill… Oh well, still looked cool covering everything
else!
