Staring at my long-forgotten blog, I try hard to fathom how I managed not to write a single post for such a long time. After eight months, I can no longer bear with being away from the blogosphere—keeping my thoughts to myself—and managing casual revelation sometimes. But this time, I’m writing in the other side of the globe away from the familiar place where I grew up and the people whom I cherished the most.

Living in an entirely different environment, I have to make a decision: will I blog about my homeland here or create a new blog about the place I’m trying so hard to adapt with—much effort is consumed by the chilly weather. (I never thought that acclimatization as a long process.)

I’ve got so much to write but first I really have to impose and plan my schedule so as to have time to immerse myself whenever I can in blogging and catching up with my favorite blogs; one of which is Raven’s blog.

Thanks to her, I found out that Textbroker is accepting writers aside from those residing in US. As much as I want to grab such opportunity, it isn’t possible as of now with the exception of blogging, of course. Then I thought about my sister. I earnestly urged her to give it a try. I still yet have to hear from her whether she try or think of alibis not to.

Another discovery that I’m thrilled to share: Pesos and Sense, a show every Filipino wanting to invest in stock or lacking entirely of knowledge should definitely watch. I’m done watching all the episodes found in YouTube that now I’m eager to know more.

Now, I’m done with the warm up post. I definitely have to work hard so as to keep up with the blogosphere.

Too Good to be True

If you’re worried about the quality of your voice, you shouldn’t because I didn’t sound like a low bat robot making its last few minutes SOS call nor the person on the other line having an echo, from the abyss.

It’s real: I made a free call to Canada and I was able to talk to my relatives—one after the other—as though they are just a few blocks away. If I hear the recorded message, I just end the call and dial/click the next telephone number. Easy and fast! Later, my mom joined or more like took over the conversation, and at some point interruptions (laughter most of the time) were so tempting that I just gave in.

It’s fun for me. It’s super fun for my mom because she loves to hear stories of our relatives—but when we told her that its free—cloud 9, aptly describe my mom’s feeling at that moment.

How to Make the Free Call

Make a Gmail account. Go to http:// mail.google.com then click “create an account.”
Log in and on the left side under Chat click “call phone.”
Follow the instructions. You’ll be asked to download a file (which is GoogleVoiceAndVideoSetup.exe).
Click this file after downloading, and then another download/installation will follow.
A message will appear if installation is complete.

Note: I only used a webcam with a built-in microphone and a speaker. This way, my ears weren’t hurt after a few minutes of conversation.

Filipinos can benefit the most in such heaven-sent, rare service. Many overseas contract workers have left the country enduring the hardship of living abroad and not being with their family especially in important occasions. So a call from home is priceless. It breaks the gap of distance, miles away. Excuse the change of mood from fun to sentimental. Let’s go back to the happy mood.

You can also make international call to other countries for a very low price cheaper than the phone card in the Philippines. I haven’t tried this one, but I may and I’ll definitely update this post.

Don’t waste your time and money. Dial the number and make that call (to your kapamilya, kapuso, or kapatid); your alibi of frugality doesn’t stand a chance. Just make sure you don’t have a sore throat so that your relative can recognize one’s voice and telling that it’s a free call, will make it more sounds, well, unbelievable.

2 Digital Camera Must-Haves: Eneloop Rechargeable Battery and Sanyo Battery Charger

When I bought an affordable digital camera in a mall in the Philippines, I thought I save much. The excitement and the lack of knowledge made me spent more later on. Peripherals were not included with the purchase: memory card and rechargeable battery and its charger. After several trials, I found and can vouch my camera must-haves so you can avoid unwise spending. Unlike the SD card that lasted only few months and cannot be read anymore by my digicam, I’m confident with my 4GB Transcend SD memory card; it is a bit pricey yet comes with high quality.

The Dynamic Duo

I know you can think of other reliable memory cards, but the next thing I recommend is really a must-have if you’re planning to buy a digital camera: Sanyo Quick Charger (Ni-MH/Ni-Cd). I bought it at a high price of more than Php 1,000 in Cyberzone at SM Annex, North Edsa. It’s a reasonable price because the charger comes with two AA eneloop rechargeable batteries. You can buy them separately but I suggest purchasing them as a package so as to save more.

My money didn’t go to waste, that I’m well sure of; it is a good investment for a photographer, professional or amateur, or what I prefer to call myself, the tinkering photo enthusiast/shutterbug.

With Sanyo Quick Charger (NC-MQR02N), you can charge AA and AAA rechargeable batteries at the same time. It has a led indicator and a foldable plug. The furthest left and right charging slots are for quick charging—the plus factor I didn’t find in other Ni-MH/Ni-Cd battery chargers.

Many times before, I was interrupted in photo taking galore; every time the “replace battery” message appears in the LCD, soon after, the camera dies. Today, eneloop rechargeable battery allows me to take more photos for a long period. If you need to take photos and you don’t have much time to charge use the quick charge mode. Otherwise, I suggest for a long picture taking charge the eneloop in the second and third slot.

Take More Photos

For maintenance, avoid the cycle of using then recharging the battery—and most importantly—don’t forget to drain it as well. Even if the camera wouldn’t turn on, it doesn’t mean the battery has no power left. It has but not just enough for the camera’s consumption. I use an old walkman (it’s still working perfectly) to drain the remaining power.

Just a rewind, if you want to listen to an album probably a decade ago, you can sing along to your fave singer through a cassette tape. With eneloop, I not only take photos, I can listen to the top songs on the radio or put in the tapes (bought less than half the original price before the reign of CD, MP3, or MP4) of an artist from a not so distance past.

Thereafter, I charge the drained battery for more than an hour, the fastest time compare to my old, unreliable charger which is now stashed in the drawer.

And if the charged power source by Sanyo is not in used, you can just take it out of the camera and the energy wouldn’t drain, even for a long period, another noteworthy advantage.

I’m planning of having two more eneloop batteries (product code: HR-3UTG 1.2V) or if possible the limited edition 8-color “eneloop glitter” rechargeable battery, a great idea so as to avoid confusion which one is already used. I, as well, await to use XX powered by eneloop Technology, the latest battery of Sanyo.

I’m not sure where you can buy them other than at Cyberzone so don’t lose your energy yet in reading my post; take your time to share one’s opinion or information on where you bought yours.

Review Stream New Rate in 2011

I occasionally visit the website of Review Stream to check if the regular rate (payment) for a review increases. It did change, from $2.50 to $1.50; a disappointing one dollar decrease is a great deal for those who love writing reviews.

I only found out a few days ago. I logged in so as to know more details since I didn’t receive a notification via e-mail. On February 25, the change take effect as the result of Google page rank update on January; according to the admin the reviews were not deem valuable that the change of rate is necessary. If there’s anything I like about the new rule, that is, the payout also decreased: it is now $30 from $50, a huge difference that somehow can encourage reviewers old or new to keep on writing for the site.

Before the cutback, I’m halfway the old payout. I was hoping that I am qualified for the new payout since if I submit reviews in succeeding days I’ll be paid with the new rates ($1.50 for regular and $0.10 for bulk rate). But I was wrong—new rates are for all while old payout is applicable for those who have written reviews prior to the discouraging change; I still have to write more articles. Don't you think it’s so unfair?

I earnestly wish the current rate would be the demarcation line—no more crossing the limit because there are other sites which one can do more and become fairly rewarded with every exerted hard work.

Kids Lessons: Clean and Green

As a person who grew up being disciplined early on, I attest that parents play a vital role in teaching their kids the importance of cleanliness and where is a good place to start such lesson—home. In one’s territory, you’ll never run out of things needing a good cleanup. Why not start with dirty clothes, a personal, messy issue that little ones can handle well with constant practice. If you don’t want you’re kids to develop the habit of dressing up the floor with dirty clothes, hand them a laundry bag and make sure things end up inside after undressing. Choose a laundry bag with drawstring and shoulder strap for easy transportation and you can also have it embroidered with your kid’s name.

Keeping things in order is not just a habit dwelling in our house. Once the kids go out, they should carry along such trait with them. I shouldn’t miss this year the 65th Annual Orchid Show with the theme, “Green Living with Orchids.” Because of the continuous campaign of different sectors to fight the heightening effects of global warming, I am learning, practicing, and becoming more curious about ways on how to take part in such feat, and having orchids in our yard is the most enticing idea.

But first I have to learn how to grow an orchid. This is our chance; we still have time to catch this annual event!

I’ll definitely bring my camera with full charged battery and huge memory space. I have to capture those beautiful Philippine orchids and the rest of the species. When will my sister and I visit the exhibition depend on the lecture we choose. I like to learn about urban planning a method of creating a garden in a limited space, commonly found in the city. We Filipinos, wherever we are, must make an effort to have awareness so as we can have a clean air to breath and a safer home called Earth. We still have four days. Aside from photos, I should take home with me either any bargain plant or orchid.

Note:

For commuters coming from Edsa, drop off in front of Quezon City Hall where the SB Underpass is located. Don’t look for footbridge. The underpass is the only way you can cross from one side to Quezon Memorial Circle. There is also another underpass facing Commonwealth Avenue; it is nearer than the SB underpass where my sister and I passed through.

And if you’re planning to attend the lecture, make sure you have a snack so could last till 5 pm and don’t forget to bring water which is costly if your going to buy in the park. Enjoy, the orchids and bonsai, learn from the free lecture, and may you win in the raffle (depending on the lecturer/company for that day).

Wearing nursing uniforms in the OJT I had in the past is a privilege because of the chance to help in the betterment of an individual’s health. In effect, I learn to find joy in being of service to others. I was able to learn many lessons from different people whom I think, in return, had greater understanding of workers in healthcare.

It’s a hard habit to break. I’m turning into a midnight owl. Early this morning (yet it is still dark and the sun hasn’t risen) I had a surprise, a good news to start the day. (But I haven’t ended it with a good night sleep.) Confusing? Allow me to give enlightenment.

Pass 24:00 I opened my Nuffnang account. And there it is—my earnings in pesos has gone from 0 to a small amount that could buy me a small taho with arnibal (sugar syrup) and sago, best served by manong (peddler man) in the morning. This is the first time I’ve earned in Philippine currency. All of my online earnings are in dollars because opportunities frequently come from America. It’s hard to find an online job or opportunity offered by Filipino employers. Whenever I reach payout, I always check the current foreign exchange rates. This time around, it’s unnecessary.

A few weeks ago, I also had the same surprise when I open my Amazon affiliate account in wee hours, a period that I’d like to think brings a good luck (but not in my health). I really have to set boundaries or curfew for my online activities—no more Internet after midnight or else I’ll turn into a ragged, barefooted Cinderella. Quite ambitious! Ragged damsel alone sufficed.
Because of the post I’ve written this year, I’m having steady, though, not-so-high traffic and since then Nuffnang ads are showing up in my blog.

My sister suggested to keep on blogging and she somehow think of using her Nuffnang ads in a blog that she wanted to start since last year. Without being told, I’ll definitely do so plus acquainting myself with the terms (eg CPC, buffered). Another good news: Blogvertise approved my blog after two weeks; I’m still waiting for opps.

Philippine Electronic Passport Online Appointment

For the application or renewal of e-passport, Filipinos must go online and use the DFA passport appointment system to have an appointment, the only date on which one can go to the Department of Foreign Affairs Consular Office located at ASEANA Business Park to proceed with the process of getting the new Philippine passport. If by chance you can’t make it, another online appointment is required.

I was able to try this online service which aims to facilitate the acquisition of passport and eliminate the risk of being deceived by fixers. Using the system is easy yet I had few glitches along the way.

First thing I did is to search the DFA passport application link and I found two links:

I first tried e-passport (no.1) but I wasn’t successful probably because of a technical glitch, so I tried the DFA site. Though similarly, I had met some problems, I was successful in the end. Note: you can use either of the two.

Step by Step Procedure:

In this procedure, I used the DFA link (http://dfa.gov.ph/main/). Once there, at the right side bar you’ll see the “Consular Services,” underneath click “Make an appointment” which lead to this link (http://epassport.com.ph/set-appointment).

Type the captcha and click the button “Start Individual Appointment Process.” Beneath it is the link for family application.
Fill out the form. Specify whether its renewal, first-time or lost passport application. I have to fill-out all the blank spaces so as to proceed to the next page otherwise a message appears reminding you to provide the necessary information. Once done, another message ensures that you have provided the correct data. Review the form well before continuing.
Documentary requirements for different categories (new applications, passport renewal, and lost passport) or individuals (minor, Muslim etc) are shown. Read carefully before clicking the button to proceed.
Choose your desired appointment: date and time. I had to retry several times because the schedule I've chosen was no longer available. At some time, I can't proceed because my IP address was banned as a result of multiple scheduled. I didn't really know why it happened but if you had the same experience, you can try again later that day.
An e-mail is sent to the mail account you provided earlier in step 2.
Open your e-mail and click the confirmation link to finalize the e-passport online appointment. You will be taken to a page showing PDF documents: Important reminders and your ePassport application form with your information. Note: To open a pdf file you must have a PDF reader such as Adobe Reader. Search and download it at http://download.cnet.com/windows/
Save and print these two documents in a long coupon bond paper. Save a copy, just in case you lost the first hard copy.
You’re done!

The DFA passport appointment system is easy to use and despite of having to retry more than thrice I still think it’s fast. My appointment is due in one month and two weeks, the closest, available date from the time I used the system. If you can’t wait for such long period, as early as possible make an e-passport appointment especially for renewal of maroon machine readable passport.

Hubpages and Amazon Associates Program: Commission (Earnings) in First Items Sold

I tried hard to stop myself in jumping, shouting. I wanted to express my excitement without holding back, but I can’t—it was past 12 in the morning. My happiness will cause annoyance—a great one—to my roommate, siblings, parents, and pets once I make a sound, a suppress squeal, slip my mouth.

Two months of writing in Hubpages, I finally reaped all the hard work as a hubber and an Amazon associate—two ordered items were bought through the first hub I’ve written (which at first I doubt, but decide to go with anyway). Maybe my eyes were just playing tricks on me, an illusion after several hours of staring at the LED computer monitor. Staying up late often is probably taking its toll on my vision and my mind—was I dreaming while awake?

But no. I was serious after shaking off my body the sleepiness creeping in; I was startled to see my very first earning in writing a hub in a blog-review format. The referral rate determines the advertising fee (commission) for each item sold. For both I earned $0.93, an amount which further inspired me, more than discouraged.

It’s not even half of the upfront payment for the regular rate in ReviewStream and in some of my writing gigs in the past—but it’s a plus factor and a good way to start because I can continuously earn commission every time I sold from my hubs. More than the monetary reward, I learned to value honesty even more and to have a greater sense credibility—all because of writing based on my experience.

Whoever bought the item from my hub, perhaps somehow, I was able to help that person decide through my opinions and researched information without being forced or pressured—the feeling I’m too familiar and dislike when buying, especially in malls.

I would like to extend gratitude (just don’t mind if I sound like I won Oscar) to fellow hubbers who are generous in sharing their knowledge in writing and choosing an informative, lucrative hub. The basic, and what is now my guiding principle, is to not look far. Start with things found in your house, regardless of its price, size, and frequency of use.

When I hit the sack I’m overwhelmed that I didn’t sleep instantly like I used to. Probably the thirty minutes of disbelief kept me awake before I gave in to sleep, dreaming about the Amazon gift card.

Moral of the story: never open an account (on which you’re expecting or wishing to earn online) at night before going to bed.

Next time, I’ll do it in the morning on which everyone is awake.

SM Mall Sale, BlackBerry, and Stars Encounter

Looking back five days ago, that is on February 6, I spent with gladness—and without—guilt all because of SM North Mall 3-day sale. Almost every store, as seen by my inquiring eyes, has items on sale. My sister and I were lucky to catch the last day of the event. Right time at the right place. Among the shopping malls in Manila, Philippines, my favorite is the one at the North Edsa because of accessibility and huge improvement of the mall.

Supposed to be, Cyberzone was the first destination; instead, we found ourselves wandering in the department store where rebates are everywhere. I don’t like Mathematics including the percentage, but in times like this, I adore those percent signs beside numbers—the higher the better. My sister purchased kitchen utensils that I carefully chose (or drastically insisted): soap dish, tablecloth, mini tongs, braising supports (the cheapest—only Php 20.00), towel for our five dogs. (The old, sole towel isn’t enough; it is already soaked with water after using to two dogs, the three have to be air-dried.) Wondering why my sister is (extra) generous to buy these things? She received her first payment from Tax Liens HQ.

So after spending for our family, she splurged for herself. The Bench shirt is a great source of satisfaction for her because it is 50% off the regular price. Several kikay knickknacks have enticed her: Paganini comb (after 2 weeks, I bet would be gone somewhere in the house) and 6 elastics Nouveau Classic Collection, a brand she attest for its durability after a friend gave her one which lasted for some time—until she lost it (a natural trait of my sister that she would not likely lost).

The last destination in our SM Mall sale trip is in Cyberzone (4th and 5th floor of SM Annex). Fortunately, my sister is faithful on her goal: buying what is only needed. As a result, she was able to buy an LCD filter for our 15.6” LED Philips monitor, a gift from our mom. After purchasing the purpose of our trip and having lunch cum snack, I thought we were homeward bound.

We went to Trinoma Mall, another must-visit shopping mall in the Philippines, to buy cheap dog supplies in True Value. It’s a hardware and pet store in one. Dog lovers will have a great time with the huge selection of affordable, imported supplies for their furry buddies.

Even in Trinoma Mall, we never run out of luck--the launching of BlackBerry smartphones: Curve 3G, Bold 9780, and Torch 9800 was held in the afternoon. Kris Aquino hosted the event that became much interesting and lively as love teams of GMA 7 were present: Joshua Dionisio and Barbie Forteza, Bea Binene and Jhake Vargas, Carla Abellana and Geoff Eigenmann, Jennylyn Mercado and Dennis Trillo, and Kris Bernal and Aljur Abrenica. I’m not a “showbiz” type but I realized when your up close with stars that you only see on TV, it’s inevitable not to be starstruck, even just a bit.

So many happenings in a single day that, when we came home we showed our affordable purchases and narrated our celebrity encounter. I think other SM Mall sales are scheduled in the succeeding months, and you can now own a BlackBerry, but if you’re expecting to meet a celebrity, that I’m not sure of, well who knows it could be your lucky day.

Bukisa First—and Last—Proof of Payment?

On my post Chitika and Bukisa, I’ve mentioned of receiving payment from the latter in the first week of Cupid’s month. And on February 3, I received an e-mail from Bukisa sending my earnings of $ 1.53 on my Paypal account. It’s not much, but it’s a proof that Bukisa does pay.

With the integration of affiliate earnings, I’m guessing this proof of payment would be the last. But perhaps—not.

First Tax Liens HQ Proof of Payment

Not from me. I’m only here to show that Tax Liens HQ does pay their members, and one of them is my sister who is a data miner for roughly two months. Her hard work paid off as she received her first payment sent to her Paypal account less than a day after requesting.

Right now she’s still busy on her niche blogs and tax liens; as a result, she somehow lost interest in updating her personal blog, so I’m taking the responsibility to reveal such prospect and its proof.

Millionaires Game, the Old, Fun Toy for Filipino Kids

Tiring as it seems, Cleaning isn’t just about throwing away the trash. It also opens an opportunity to unearth a once-treasured possession of mine when I was just a child who loves cleaning as much as playing—the Millionaires Game, which has spent most of its years in a box, once again brought out in the open when one afternoon I went to the stock room to see the condition of my old, forgotten toys.

It seems like it is in good condition though you can tell a child has outgrown it. The board is sturdy but has several yellow stains. The paper money, I’m not sure if it’s still complete, has few folds on the sides. And the small houses are still wonderful to look at, that I recall how much careful I was in holding it back then, as though I wouldn’t want to break the peewee abode (actually it is made of plastic). During further examination of the box, I’m happy to discover some pieces are still complete: 5 tokens and 2 dice.

Everything is set. I wanted to play this board game again with my sister and younger cousins, but the problem is I forgot the rules and so is my sister. By looking at the game, I can recall some rules but it isn’t of great help.

So I head on the Internet, and found the rules thanks to day-dreamers-corner. I’m in luck because he has considered writing about Millionaires Game by Mabuhay Educational Center, Inc. I printed, read the rules, and I’m so eager to play it again, I think, after probably a decade, or more. That’s too long. I think it’s the benefits of being organized, or a hoarder, or having mild OC, or altogether.

I’ll take care of it all the more; I don’t think I can give it away unlike the Stairway to Heaven (similar to Snake and Ladder) handed down to my relatives from the province. They are probably spending their afternoon on weekends playing with the board game, a diversion that kids today have forgotten because of PSP, cellphones, Farmville, and other computer games.

Parents have a vital role in encouraging the young ones and not letting board game pass into oblivion, and the best way to do so is to play with them. Together, other than fun, the benefits are numerous, and enduring:

Strengthening the family bond. Family can spend time together while playing.
Young ones can learn to mingle with others and learn the importance of honesty.
It is cheap and can last for so long if you know how to take care, especially the smaller pieces that one can easily lost.
No electrical consumption. It’s a diversion teaching us to go green–and still have fun, fun, fun.
You can hand it down to siblings, cousins, or donate it to a children organization.

Many board games are available in the Philippines and on the Internet. These are great gift for birthday and holiday. May Millionaires Game, along with the new generation of affordable, and non-techie toys, finds its way to the heart of juvenile and even to the young at heart.

NBI Clearance Renewal at Victory Central Mall

Local news about the country has long been the immense reason for me not to watch TV—well it’s all because of the bad news which always outnumbered the good ones. Still, Ido benefit in occasionally watching local TV news because of the information I learn, for example, on how to go about NBI clearance renewal. Instead of going to the old office at Sta. Cruz, Carriedo (like what a friend did), I went straight to the new office at Victory Central Mall (address: #717 Old Victory Liner Cmpd. Rizal Ave. Monumento, Caloocan City, telephone no: 351-4149/351-0619). To get there, the fastest and perhaps the cheapest is through LRT; you have to get off at Monumento Station. Across the street is the mall beside Victory Liner.

I first set foot on this mall because I have to renew my old NBI clearance. I strolled like a window shopper, glancing in different stores while searching for any sign of the whereabouts of the NBI satellite office. Luckily, I saw a sign that somewhat points me to 5th floor. And in every floor, I see the similar sign, so you don’t have to worry about wasting time and getting lost.

The long queue of people startled and frightened me most. (I dread and hate waiting in line but I still quietly and patiently do so.) It’s a false alarm anyhow, if renewal is your purpose; otherwise, you have to bear with it if you’re a first timer. As for me I went to a series of steps (including the payment of Php 115.00 (see the complete price list and procedure) quite fast like when I claimed my Philhealth ID Card. In no time, I had my NBI clearance printed at once. I was so happy, then exasperated, because my middle name was misspelled.

Warning: check first all the information before leaving. Don’t get too excited yet.

The same staff had it corrected and I received my error-free, new NBI clearance without extra charge. (Better be because it wasn’t my fault anyway.) Beside the exit is the kiosk for those who have NBI clearance renewal card (CRC), a supposed ticket for a hassle-freee renewal of clearance. If you can manage, for the sake of the clearance to be an early bird, even for a single day, I think you don’t need this card because there are many booths manned by quick staff. Just choose the one with the shortest queue. The huge signs hanging on the ceiling will guide you where to go.

This experience spares a friend of mine in going to the old satellite office. May it do the same to you because that would, indeed, sound like good news for someone like me who longs for a pleasant occurrence.

Chitika and Bukisa

Bukisa has now fully implemented the big change: member can only earn through Google Adsense or Chitika. I chose the latter. Other than Nuffnang, Chitika made it easy for me to sign up—and the following day—my application was apprved. Fortunately, I now have Chitika ads running alongside my Bukisa articles; otherwise, I have no choice but to abandon Bukisa. In the first week of February the earnings based on the Bukisa index of 3.22 will be sent to its member’s Paypal account.

And with regard to the new venture in making money online, I’ve checked my Chitika account, and I only have like 10 impressions of ads so far and no clicks yet. I’m not sure how long I can earn form Chitika, especially with the rule that audience/traffic must come from USA and Canada only. Maybe I’ll add Chitika in a blog that caters more to Americans and Canadians, that is, if I end procrastinating and start working in some of my ideas.

But for now I’m preoccupied in learning to make a lucrative hub. Though I’m not earning yet, I’m enjoying in sprucing up each hub. Can’t wait to have my first-ever product sold—what would it be or how much commission will I get didn’t matter to me, as of now. When my sister first sold an item on her hub she was so happy (but didn’t do a happy dance or song) and proud. We’re expecting the first item she bought on Amazon using her gift card—the fruition of her hard work. It’s actually a post-Christmas and an early birday gift for our dad, at the same time.
