In the 16th century, India’s textile workers discovered how to make color dyes adhere to cotton and linen, thus making it colorfast. Before this important discovery, colors and designs printed onto cotton and linen, would soon wash out and fade in the sun. Berry and vegetable dyes were not fast. Clothes were drab and colorless. People valued wools and silks, which held color well. Silk was too expensive for the average person and wool was too hot in some climates.

Most vegetable and plant dyes washed out except for indigo, a blue dye, which is why many woven white and blue check fabrics were woven in the colonies. Both indigo plants and cotton plants grew abundantly in the warm humid climate of India, as did the best plant for red dye obtained from the root of the madder plant. Indigo was fast, madder red was not. But getting the blue dye from the indigo plant was not easy or quick. It was labor intensive and produced an expensive dye that was valued across the world.

The primary method for dyeing with indigo was vat dyeing, where a chemical reducing bath took place in a vat (container) above or below the ground. This was necessary in order to make the insoluble indigo plant soluble. The process of getting the dark blue dye from an indigo plant started with fermentation in the vat filled with an alkali solution. The resulting dye liquor would be left to cool and harden. It was cut into hand-size chunks to be shipped in divided boxes to indigo dyers who then ground it to a powder that was soluble in water. Dyers boiled the mixture, then cooled and stirred it. They removed extraneous materials like twigs that would affect the printing. Next, the mixture was put into the vat with the cloth; copperas and lime were added to it and the dyebath became yellow in color. After a time, the cloth also turned yellow. It was not until it they lifted it from the vat that oxygenation took effect (in about 12-15 minutes) which turned the cloth blue. Afterward the indigo was insoluble again. Commonly, the last remaining color in an old faded or deteriorated quilt is cotton indigo dyed.

Simply adding more dye to the bath would not produce a darker shade of blue. This required repeated submerging followed by oxygenation after each dipping. If an area were to remain white, a resist paste made of wax or a flour paste was brushed on to cover it to prevent the dye from penetrating the fabric under it.

There were two other methods that printers used to apply indigo to cotton: pencilling (also spelled penciling), and China blue. Pencilling was used to hand brush blue onto small areas of a multicolored print, usually chintz. A brush applied the reduced dye directly onto the area, where sit oxygenated quickly. It could look spotty as uneven, and have a poor registration. There were more pencillers (usually young girls and boys) employed in mid- eighteenth century print works than any other job skill.

The China blue technique did not reduce the indigo plant beforehand. Instead, indigo plant was applied to cloth using wood blocks or engraved copperplates. After printing, the cloth was placed first in a lime bath, then in copper bath, then back and forth repeatedly. This yielded a light or light-medium shade of blue on a light ground. Bird, bouquets and pillar prints made with fine liens are the result of this rare technique.

Eventually, stable direct printing of indigo was possible in the last quarter of the 19th century. Glucose utilized indigo in such a way that the reduced version combined with steam fixed the color. German scientists first synthesized indigo in the 1880s, patenting it in the early 1900s. Commercial dyeing with synthetic indigo did not begin until 1897, but home dyeing and trial runs were made earlier and synthetic dyes were available to the public. Many shades of indigo dyed cotton are found in quilts made from 1890 to 1918, the start of WWI. Synthetic indigo dye essentially replaced the use of natural indigo by the early 1920s.

Dyes on fabrics are one of the clues to dating textiles and quilts, but indigo dyes were used around the globe and for generations, making it quite difficult to date indigo dyed fabrics found in America. It is easier to date this fabric when it is on a quilt as the style of the quilt provides a strong clue to dating it.

Two major brands dominating the direct garment printing industry is the FastJet and the InkJet printers. For the longest time the knock on these machines is that they did not do well with darker colors and would not print on black t shirts at all. Well that is history with new improvements and they are now available in different sizes that will print up to 8 t shirts at a time. The machines run as low as about 8k and all the way up to 40k for the 8 at a time t shirt printer. What is great about these machines is that they take most of the skill out of the printing job. While screen printing is still regarded as the superior way to print on t shirts, it looks like direct garment printing is a close runner up and has passed the iron on technique and really all other printing methods of choice. Some of the great new additions to the newer models include:

Ink costs of 15 to 40 cents per print for light garments.
Excellent wash ability.
CE Marked for European Conformity.
Print from any graphics program.
Print on 100% cotton and 50/50 shirts, towels, caps, and more.
Easy to use – just push a button!
Superb detail …better than screen print!
Great for name drops!
T-Jet2 is portable for events.
Excellent support – six days a week!
Buy from someone you know and trust.
Safe, water based textile ink – solvent and odor free.
Brilliant color and prints! Very soft hand and feel!
Perfect for individual shirts or production runs.
World-wide service network.
White ink on black shirts!
Easy to use – just push a button!
Excellent wash ability.
Superb detail …better than screen print!
Excellent support – six days a week!
Buy from someone you know and trust.
Print on 100% cotton, 50/50, caps, and more.
Ink costs of 15 to 40 cents per print for light shirts.
Safe, water based textile ink – solvent and odor free.
Brilliant color and prints!
The screen printing industry is buzzing with this newer way to print because it has overcome some of its major negatives from conception. While the art of screen printing is not negatively affected yet, it is believed that one day in the future the direct garment method will be the first choice among the pros as it will cut out the ability to have errors and will eventually become a quicker method for mass production. For right now it is a great way for a smaller t shirt business to get started and will allow someone who is not a skilled screen printer to still create their own t shirts to greatly reduce the costs of screen printing. The machines are not cheap which is still a major draw back but as popularity increases I believe like all things we will see a drop in the prices of these machines as manufacturing becomes increased. For more information about these direct garment printing machines you should check out the imachinegroup for ordering information as well as for further product knowledge.

Printed coffee mugs come in Earthenware, Bone China, Acrylic, Lusture, Colour Coated, Heat Changing, Thermo, Stainless Steel, Frozen Glass and Metallic Colour. The majorities of the printed coffee mugs are dishwasher and microwave safe.

These printed coffee mugs are a great promotional item for putting your company out in front of your customers and future customers. Most of the printed mugs are usually larger than a regular coffee cup and that makes it nice for people to have a cup of coffee in. Most people like a larger cup of coffee with a larger handle to hold and these printed mugs are both.

Printed mugs also make nice gifts during the holidays for the employees. You can’t go wrong with the printed mugs. These printed coffee mugs will ensure your advertising logo or chosen design will be a star attraction.

Plastic mugs are hard wearing and withstand dropping on hard surfaces due to its durable plastic. Standard recycled printed coffee mugs make a special statement about your company concerns about the environment. The classic recycled printed mugs are also of recycled plastic. There is a different shape of the two coffee mugs, but both are great for being a promotional item.

There are many useful promotional items, but the most useful is the printed coffee mugs that everyone can use. They can be used for coffee, water, and soda, especially on a trip when fluids need to be taken and a lot of people don’t like to drink out of bottles. The standard plastic printed mug has a flat bottom and the classic plastic mug has a rounded area that comes into a flat bottom.

During the holidays promotional printed mugs can be Christmas designed and given as gifts to employees and consumers. Printed mugs become collectible to some of the public. They like to see the different companies who have put these mugs out and the different images on them. There is no end to imagination when it comes to designing a printed mug and the same is true when collecting these mugs.

There are some mugs that are made in certain shapes. Some of these are a train engine mug, an Indian head mug, cat and dog mugs, pig and horse mugs, cow mugs and numerous other shape mugs. These printed coffee mugs are used for representing a company that you are in. An amusement park that has a train ride will usually have the engine mugs printed with the name of the park and city, for sale. Some of the road side tourist places will have all shapes of mugs and some of them will be printed with the name of the place and where it is located, for sale.

Printed mugs can be found almost anyplace. Even some restaurants have printed mugs for sale with the name of the restaurants on them. People do like to collect these mugs as some of the incentive is that if you bring the cup back in you’ll get a free cup of coffee in it. And some mugs are worth money, so be sure and collect your mugs.

Do You Really Save Money With Wholesale Prints?

The next time you consider cutting down your print quantity to less than a hundred copies, think of the additional printouts you would get by shelling out a few more dollars for wholesale prints. With better and more ad exposure, you can easily get an ROI on those few bucks.

It is a known fact that you get bargain deals with wholesale orders. In fact, you get a significant price cut compared to retail purchasing. But does the same principle apply to wholesale prints? If so, why? If we dissect the process of offset, you will get a better idea of printing in large volume.

Method of offset printing

Offset printing is an impression technique achieved by multiple transfers of images, from the plate to a rubber blanket and lastly, to the material like text and cover stocks. Clearly, offset printing requires more than a simple stamp printing process or even digital printing.

It starts with your file being converted into film. The image on the film is then transferred to a plate which is one of the notable expenses of each printing batch. In the case of 4 color printing, four plates are required: one each for cyan, magenta, yellow and black. Each of these plates would register, although not directly, on the paper, and these are done at extremely fast rates.

Cost of production

Truth is, the cost of paper and ink is quite minimal. What contributes much to the total expense are the plates. The operation cost is divided among the printouts. This is why ordering wholesale quantities can tremendously bring down the cost of each printed piece. By ordering more copies, the cost is divided among more pieces so the unit cost becomes less.

For example, the cost of printing 50 posters is $350. It appears that the price of each piece is $7. But if you order 100 posters, the price become $360. You doubled the quantity but added only $10! The unit price drops to $3.6, nearly half of the unit cost with 50 printouts. Increase the quantity further to 200 posters and you pay only about $8 more. With $368 at 200 copies, the unit cost is cut down to about $1.80. With less than $20 more, you get to quadruple the number of your posters, allowing you to reach more people with widespread advertising.

This makes offset printing a very ideal candidate for wholesale prints. As for short run orders, digital printing is the suitable option since the costs prior to printing is low, and the charge per piece remains uniform.

But is offset printing good?

Aside from its cost effective offering for large volume printing, the quality of offset printing is among the best. Color impressions are impressive. The details of images are clear and texts are clear. Moreover, the print results are consistent so you are assured that you get the same quality from the first print down to the last, even if you order 20,000 copies.

And as mentioned, the rate of offset printing runs at about 50,000 per hour. This means that even if your order thousands of copies, you can get fast turnaround times.

The next time you consider cutting down your print quantity to less than a hundred copies, think of the additional printouts you would get by shelling out a few more dollars for wholesale prints. With better and more ad exposure, you can easily get an ROI on those few bucks.

Almost any medium and large organization with substantial computer and printing reliance will often pay millions for the luxury of color printing and copying.

Almost any medium and large organization with substantial computer and printing reliance will often pay millions for the luxury of color printing and copying. With the urgent need to save on resources as well as reducing the cost of IT, printing is now an important part of an organization’s expense tracking.

Introduction
What can you do to curb exploding printing costs and reduce your corporate carbon footprint while still being able to capitalize on state-of-the-art printing equipment?

There are some obvious answers:

1) Make sure you only purchase printers with a low stand-by power requirement, as this immediately calls for the requirement of fast warm-up times. On your existing hardware, make sure the printers that have power save mode have it switched on. If it is a model that takes a few minutes to warm up, you may want to consider purchasing a newer model as the time lost for your employees may be more expensive over a year than a new printer.

2) You may ask your employees to only print documents in color that really need printing in color as color toner can be at 10x the cost of the same page printed in black and white, i.e., proof printing, emails, memos and contracts should all be monochrome, while presentations going into the hands of a customer should be color.

3) The same applies for copying and color copying. Certain users do not require color copying and need to be advised to not copy personal information often done after hours when the managers have left the building. Others should only print or copy in duplex mode (using both sides of the paper) as this can reduce the paper requirement to half for those applications. In larger plotting applications forcing paper to a maximum size will reduce ink and paper use.

4) Large print jobs should only be sent to an appropriate printer, i.e., more than 100-page prints sent to the mail-room production printer where a banner page is included automatically and an e-mail notification sent once the job is ready to be picked up.

However, the larger the organization the more difficult it becomes to make people understand and follow these rules, so here a printed output management system that can enforce your policies comes in handy.

Benefits of an Output Management System

Once an output management system is in place, significant benefits can be yielded. There are two primary categories, Non-Interactive and Authenticated Access:

Non-Interactive:
Accounting for color or monochrome pages by client, user, department or device
User based, departmental or client based charge-back
Rerouting of too large print jobs to the mail room
Quotas can be enforced
Billing back to customers, departments or users

Authenticated Access:
Convenience printing – user authenticates at a printer of choice
Uncollected prints are deleted from the print queue
Rerouting notification at any printer
Personal job list at the printer device
Print, copy, scan, fax and e-mail access control

Conclusion
If you own your printer fleet you should make the most of it by providing users with the best capabilities but also enforce policies that prevent waste of paper, toner and energy.

The largest sources of waste are uncollected print jobs or mishandled print jobs. An output management system that prevents the print from coming out until you identify yourself at the printer is a simple-to- implement and cost-effective way to stop that waste.

Usually an output management system can save energy by allowing your print to follow you to the printer of your convenience, store the job until you are ready to collect it or delete the job without any waste if you have not collected it within a preset time.

A side effect is that your job is secure; nobody can look at it as it is not sitting in the printer’s output tray for hours and mixed in with other people’s print jobs.

A good output management system will also allow you to produce statistics proving how much you have saved by giving you the information of how many jobs / pages have been automatically deleted.
