CME, Coalition-Style

A coalition of nine organizations recently received a $12.5 million grant from Pfizer to develop a CME program on tobacco cessation that's expected to reach more than 600,000 doctors over three years. The initiative called Continuing Education Aimed at Smoking Elimination (CEASE) is a collaboration among the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, California Academy for Family

Collective CME Resolutions

I begin every January filled with hope and optimism and then I make the same resolutions that I've made for at least 10 years. Many of us engage in similar endeavors, and when December comes around, we look back, sigh, and tell ourselves next year. This year, let's take a different approach: Why not develop a plan of action now, while the year is new, and make some collective CME industry resolutions?

My CME Life List

I have heard a lot about life lists lately; these are the lists that people make outlining things that they want to do or accomplish before they die. I thought that it would be interesting to create a personal CME life list of sorts, or a listing of things that I hope to see accomplished during my tenure in the CME community. The international medical community recognizes CME as the longest and arguably

Money Doesn't Kill CME. People Do.

The CME enterprise has had a few rough years. Some physicians requested or accepted too much honoraria for too little work. Some educational presenters turned a blind eye to science while winking at promotion. And some employees of organizations involved in CME funding, development, and certification broke the rules. With the help of news media, regulators, and the U.S. Senate, we identified the problem:

Find a Window

As I write this, the presidential candidates are crusading through the neighboring state of New Hampshire in anticipation of what promises to be an exciting and unpredictable primary and election year. One thing is certain: healthcare is a top priority issue for candidates and voters. While conventional wisdom holds that Democratic administrations are tougher on the pharmaceutical industry, the regulatory
