Please see below for the most recent food pantry being hosted this semester:

Tomorrow, January 24^th, 2023, is the monthly distribution of food, a large amount of food (up to possibly 50 pounds), at PETE'S PANTRY IN THE PARK, in Preciado Park here on campus, from Aggie Cupboard.

Distribution at 12:30 – 2:30 or until food runs out

In case of inclement weather, please look for a school-wide mass email from Aggie Cupboard. If the distribution is as planned, PLEASE BUNDLE UP and be weather-wise.

Food will vary. Much of the food is suitable for kosher, vegetarian, or halal use!

La Sociedad Para Las Artes at New Mexico State University kindly invites you to an evening reading featuring MFA Fiction candidate Chad Valdez, followed by writer, Savannah Johnston on Friday, January 27th at 7:30 p.m. at the HHS Auditorium.

Savannah Johnston is an enrolled member of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma living in New York City. Her work has appeared in Gulf Coast, HTML giant, and Gravel, among others. Rites: Stories is her debut collection of fiction, published by Jade Ibis, a feminist press committed to sharing literature from voices of people of color, those with disabilities, and culturally marginalized voices.

Chad Valdez is a Diné writer currently residing in Las Cruces, New Mexico where he is pursuing his MFA in Fiction at New Mexico State University and works as prose editor for Puerto Del Sol. His writing has appeared in the Windward Review and elsewhere.

Check out the attached flyers for more information about a couple of very fun, team-based learning classes over in Geography. Some extra info from the Dr. Brown:

Geog 328 V, The Geography of Latin America – I offer this VWW class in a Team Based Learning (TBL) model, and it has been a very successful class that has students working in teams for much of the term. Many of the questions we examine deal with the impact of globalization on Latin America, and the exercises we do in class are very timely concerning current events. Students do in class discussions in varied formats, and the class also has a modest writing requirement to give students a chance to improve their writing skills. Please note I am offering this class online, synchronously in Zoom
Geography 435/535, Environmental Planning – This is a cross listed grad/undergraduate class in which we will explore sustainable development, urban planning, and current ideas to design more environmentally friendly places to live and work. The increasing impacts of the climate crisis make these discussions very timely. This class is also offered in the TBL model, with group discussion exercises and an applied research project students will do in teams. The teams last spring did some great work, and one of the projects has led to a student's thesis proposal and project.

NATURE OF WORK:

Work under the supervision of the City of Las Cruces Communications Office to produce video programing, such as public service announcements, commercials, news packages, informational videos and live public meetings. Also take still photos for the City's website and social media sites. Must be able to work in supervised and unsupervised environments. This is for a student wishing to get great experience in media production for a future career.

WORKING PERIOD / DAYS / HOURS

This position is for one semester with the possibility of continuing for an additional semester. Works 10-20 hrs per week. Primarily Monday-Friday. Flexible hours to work with school schedule, but Monday afternoons are required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Operate television broadcast equipment, such as video switcher, graphic generator, audio board, and PC software to live switch meetings in City Council chambers to air on CLC-TV Comcast cable channel 20/928, and stream on the City's website and YouTube page.
Operate professional mirrorless style video camera, standard video camera and audio recording equipment to record various types video productions such as PSAs, instructional, informational and/or news style packages.
Operate professional editing software to edit various types of video productions such as PSAs, instructional, informational and/or news style packages.
Operate professional photo camera to take still photos for City's website and social media accounts.
Drive City vehicle to various locations within Las Cruces and Dona Ana County to get photographs and record video.
Must complete the City's Defensive Driving course before operating a vehicle for City business.
Will be required to be available Monday afternoons starting at noon. Will work with schedule for other times throughout week.

QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERENCE GUIDELINES

Graduation from high school or G.E. D equivalent. Active, full-time enrollment in a degree program in Mass Media and Journalism, Film, Creative Media or similar. Preference for Junior or Senior credit level with 3.0 or higher GPA.

Valid driver's license is required. Position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.

Knowledge of:

Shooting video & photos with DSLR or mirrorless style cameras (exp. Sony Alpha cameras) or professional camcorder.
Editing video with professional non-linear editing software (exp. Adobe Premiere Pro).
Basic knowledge of using social media (Facebook, YouTube, Instagram)
Basic knowledge of professional audio recording equipment
Basic knowledge of television broadcast equipment (video switcher, audio mixer).
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and Word
Basic knowledge of using Apple Mac computers.

Environmental Factors

Work will be performed at Las Cruces City Hall, various locations throughout Las Cruces. Production and editing equipment will be provided. Travel may be required with exposure to all weather and traffic conditions.

Physical Factors:

Moderate physical demands; lifting up to 40 lbs. Regular lifting and carrying of production equipment.
