Finding treasures

I’m not one of those people that tries to save money by checking out all the deals and then buying a few items at half a dozen different stores. I’m not a mega-shopper. Two-to-three stores and I’m wiped out for the day.

In our area, it doesn’t make much sense to do that kind of shopping anyway – it would waste too much gas. The closest stores are only 10-25 minutes away but in different directions. We typically only go to one or two stores a week – and not at the same time since we’ll combine our errands to group an area.

Today, I was reminded of a local treasure that I keep forgetting about. Over lunch I stopped at a locally run “wholesale food” store (Rochester Wholesale Fruit if you’re in the Winona, MN area). They buy food at wholesale prices, sometimes repackage into deli-style containers and pass along the savings to the consumers. They’ve expanded in the last couple of years to include all sort of fun foods. There are lots of bottled and boxed products which may or may not save you money, but if you like to cook from scratch, they have things like bulk yeast, bulk spices, dried fruits and vegetables, different flours, soup mixes, etc. They also have fresh fruits and vegetables and have expanded to have meats and seafood.

I mainly went there to pick up some yeast since we’ve been making a lot of bread at home ($1.97 for a small container of Red Star yeast – 2 to 3 times the size of the jars). I also walked out with some homemade noodles and apples. The apples are what made me think I need to shop there more often. This past weekend I went to the grocery store to pick up some fruit. The cheapest apples I saw (that we’d eat) were $1.49 / lb. The apples I picked up today were locally grown and selling for $2.50 / 5 lbs.!! That’s a savings of almost $5! It looked as though some might have have bruises, but we’ll probably eat that many – or bake them within this next week.

Maybe the apples you buy in the store are a bit fresher – as some areas of the country (or planet) would be able to keep them on the trees longer. But I like the idea of locally grown (not shipped from thousands of miles away) and they still looked good.

It annoys me when stores list their deals of the week but if you look closely, what they are offering isn’t really a deal.

Case in point: A certain local grocery store has a coupon in this week’s ad that states:

Free With Purchase and Coupon

Purchase one 1 1/4' Thick Cut Big T-Bone Steak 25 oz. for $15.00, Receive two Twice Baked Potatoes 5 oz. free. Limit 2 free potatoes with coupon. Limit 1 coupon per customer.

Sounds like an ok deal to you? Check again. 25 oz. is 1.5 pounds (1.5625 to be exact). That means that would be paying $9.60 per pound for that steak!! For that amount, I’d want a higher quality cut of beef than T-bone. Or have it served to me in a restaurant where would not only get baked potato, but salad, drinks, etc.

I know beef prices have gone up the last few years – especially steak prices, but if you watch carefully you can find deals a lot better than this one. In fact, we’ve even found rib roasts for $4.99/lb. (see Harvest Preservation) That’s Prime Rib, people!

Just goes to show that the consumer always needs to be aware…
