Don’t be caught unprepared!

Pass the 2-part CNA exam first time!

Get the “The Ultimate CNA Test Guide” to ensure that you pass your exam with flying colours!

Most people fail because The textbooks simply don’t cover everything you needin order to get your qualification:

The Certified Nursing Assistant Exam Isn’t the Same in All States!

This is because the National Nurse Aide Assistant Program (NNAAP) isn’t adopted by all states. And no book deals with the differences in CNA exams that prevail across the states as a result of this.

You need the “The Ultimate CNA Test Guide” because it’s a comprehensive coverage of exam details specific to your state!

The clinical procedures learnt in theory need to be further reinforced throughpractice!

“I decided to join a nurse aide program this year. I bought Mosbys for preparation. I purchased “The Ultimate CNA Test Guide “only a week before the written test. Sample questions in this book were great. It has plenty of valuable info about certification and licensing that I found in no other book. ” - Janie

“This book contains updated information about application procedures. It really helped me and saved a lot of time. The in-depth explanation of clinical procedures was the best!” – Ju Lee

Do You Know Why Examiners Fail So Many Candidates?

Many candidates fail despite what they learned in courses because they are insufficiently prepared for the Clinical Skills exam.

Attending a CNA course does NOT guarantee that you learnt the procedures 100%.

But “The Ultimate CNA Test Guide” does!

It’s the only guide that teaches you the clinical procedures step by step and helps you to perfect them.

It’s the perfect aid to help you during your practice sessions and instil in you the best practices for assisting patients.

Care Plan for Emotionally Stressed Patients

Several research reports and surveys have indicated that the patients, whose friends and relatives are involved in their care, show a speedy recovery. Emotionally stressed patients feel more comfortable, when they get clinical care in a homely environment. Emotional and mental support by health care professionals is vital, in case of such patients. Nurse aides need to be patient and quite while providing care to these patients. Here, we have discussed how the nursing assistants can provide better care and comfort to the emotionally stressed patients.

Being a certified nursing assistant in any setting, like nursing home, you have to act as a conduit between the resident and his family members or friends. You should help in creating an open atmosphere, when visitors come to meet the patient. For example, you can provide them an extra chair if they need. If the resident desires, light up the room by opening the blinds. Small conversations with the family members about resident’s life show your care and concern towards them. These little things can take you a long way.

Some patients don’t have regular visitors or family members around them. Their only contact is you and other members of the health care team. You need to pay extra time to them, so that they don’t feel lonely. Spend some time in understanding their problems and try to know about their interest and hobbies. Besides physical support, they may also expect some emotional support from you.

Human Nature and Emotions

Man is a social being; this is a well known fact since ages. Emotionally stressed patients in the medical settings need a good quality physical and mental care. Besides providing them medications on time, you need to maintain positive bedside manners as well. You should solve their queries related to their treatment and give them advices after consulting the physician. Good communication between patients and nurse aides can be beneficial to both of them.

Patients often go through a variety of human emotions, during their treatment in medical settings. Frustration, stress and fear can be the outcome of long time sufferings, pain, illness and injury. If you learn to handle these basic human emotions, you can do your job better.

Building Relationship

Making a good relationship with the patient is beneficial in increasing their trust in you. This will strengthen your bond with the patient and they will start to rely on your care and work. Active listening and taking effective steps in solving their problems can help you build rapport. Try to stick to your promise and be reliable. Refusing them in a polite way is better than breaking promises.

Coping Strategies

Many issues regarding care can be the cause of frustration in patients. You are the only professional, who is in direct contact with the patient all the time, so they expect you to listen to their complaints. Be calm and quiet and pay time to understand the cause and effects of the problem. Try to find an effective solution. Displaying a calm and positive behavior all the time can assure the resident that you are concerned about them and they are in safe hands.

Death and Dying

Nursing assistant’s professional career can be a mixture of both good and bad times. You will get a chance to see different faces of life and death, in this profession. There will be times when you will hold a new born baby in your hands and sometimes you will be taking care of the patients that are fighting with incurable diseases or are counting the last few breaths of their lives. Every patient has its own unique way of handling death, but being a health care professional you need to follow a proper designed protocol, to help in getting the patients through this phase.

Palliative Care

According to World Health Organization, “active total care of patients, whose disease is not responsive to curative treatment”, is known as palliative care. It includes management of social, spiritual, psychological, physical and existential needs of the patient. Giving patients the best possible quality care during the time of their suffering, is the ultimate goal of palliative care in most of the settings. Understanding cultural and religious values of the patient also becomes important in this time of need.

Palliative care helps the resident and their family members in managing spiritual issues and physical pain. It also guides them about the changing course that would be followed during the dying process. Relieving stress for terminally ill residents and their family members is the main objective of this care. Being a health care professional, you need to develop the necessary skills required for providing care to such patients. Participating in continuing education, opportunities related to dying patients and years spent in practice will be beneficial in serving these patients in a better way.

Relieving Pain

Severe physical pain and mental stress is among the most common issues noted in dying patients. Most of these patients become weak due to fatal illness and most of them lose their self-confidence. Being a nurse aide, you need to help the patient in building their self-confidence. Fear, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia and depression are some of the common factors, which usually come into play when one faces intense pain. You should help the patient in eliminating physiological factors and building a confidence towards his medical treatment. Pay enough time to listen to their complaints regarding care and pain.

You need to be very careful, while you are dealing with the patients struggling from deadly diseases. For example, while performing their activities of daily living, you need to consider their moods. If they refuse to bath or comb at any time, you should not force them. Let them take their time and once they feel comfortable, ask them again. Patients of this type mostly refuse to eat or they don’t like the food in their meal tray. Try to explain them the role of a proper diet in their treatment and ask them what they may wish to eat. Inform your supervisor about the patient’s food choice and if he feels suitable, you can get the patient the food of his choice.

Don’t make any assumptions regarding your patient’s pain or suffering. Try to understand their condition and always trust them. Try to find some other option, which can help in relieving the patient’s pain; like a hot towel or warm water bottle can work in some cases. Give your best to comfort the patients and be courteous during the time of high anxiety.

Is CNA and STNA Same?

The terms ‘CNA’ and ‘STNA’ are used for nurse aides. There is no difference in both the terminologies. In fact, in the state of Ohio, certified nursing assistants are known as state tested nurse aides (STNAs). In this article, we have discussed about the required qualifications and training, certification, responsibilities, etc. of these professionals. Continue Reading:

Education

For working as a STNA, students require a diploma in high school or GED (General Education Development) certificate, just like CNAs. Aspiring candidates need not go to college for earning a degree.

Training

State tested nurse assistants must complete a training of specified time period (75 hours). It is mandatory to complete both theoretical and clinical part of the training. Remember, the training programs must be accredited by the state’s Department of Health. The topics covered in the classroom studies are: body mechanics, aging process, nutrition and health, infection control, etc. In practical sessions, students learn to measure vital signs, feeding and moving the patients, administering medication, etc. Same rules apply for CNAs, in terms of training

Certification

For getting a STNA or CNA certification, you ought to qualify an exam conducted by the state. After obtaining the certificate, you become eligible to work as a state tested nurse aide.

Working Environment

Like certified nurse assistants, these professionals may also find jobs in clinics, nursing homes, residential care facilities, patient’s home, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, etc. They have a very busy and hectic work schedule. STNAs provide basic care and assist the patients in their routine activities. Good physical stamina, patience and compassion are some of the skills required to work successfully as a state tested nurse assistant.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

STNAs and CNAs perform similar tasks. Some of the job duties and responsibilities of state tested nurse aides are:

Assisting patients in feeding, grooming, toileting and bathing.

Moving the bedridden patients.

Preventing infection.

Lifting and transferring the patients.

Fulfilling the emotional and physical needs of the patients.

Taking care of patient’s hygiene.

Measuring vital signs.

Observing and reporting the condition of the patient.

Cleaning medical instruments and patient’s room.

Salary

As stated by salary.com, the median income of STNAs was $24,790, in November 2009. On the other hand, CNAs may earn an average income of $24,010 per annum. The salary of both the professionals depends on the geographic location, experience and the state, in which they are employed.
