"Feed your news demon"

This well-crafted, standalone newsreader makes an ideal choice for both novices who've never heard of an RSS feed and advanced users looking to put some oomph and flexibility into their reading habits.We particularly liked FeedDemon's setup wizard, which allows you to subscribe to an unlimited number of popular RSS feeds by simply checking boxes. The program also provides links to several other RSS directories.

FeedDemon's interface is very good, but its default setting, which places the headline and browser panes side by side, is somewhat clumsy. This is easily remedied with the buttons that sit right at the top of each folder and each item.

The utility's Watch Channels feature searches for news items containing user-specified keywords and places them in a separate group so they're easier to find. We're also fond of the app's News Bins function, which allows you to archive a story simply by dragging a headline and placing it in a storage bin in the left-side column.

Another compelling feature is the integrated podcast manager, which will automatically send new podcasts to your music jukebox. There's a support forum where you can post questions and get answers from other users, and Newsgator has a free webware client so you can check your feeds wherever you are. We strongly recommend using FeedDemon to soothe your hunger.

"Get productivity for free"

A credible rival to MS Office, OpenOffice.org includes powerful applications for making text documents, spreadsheets, presentations, diagrams, and databases, as well as HTML and XML documents. Not only does it let you edit basic documents, such as letters and faxes, it also handles equations and complex and multipart documents with bibliographies, reference tables, and indexes.

The interface is similar to that of MS Office, and even advanced Office users will find almost everything they're used to: templates, collaborative features (versions, recording changes), macros, and even a programming language. OOo, as it's known, lets you open and save documents in formats as diverse as MS Office formats, PDF, HTML, and XML.

It can also import files from those formats, as well as WordPerfect and others. However, it normally saves files in the open-standard Oasis OpenDocument XML format, for maximum compatibility with other applications.

The latest versions of OpenOffice have seen a spurt of growth in the extensions available for the program. These include templates for professional writers, an export tool for bidirectional functionality with Google Docs, blog publishing, and others.

Blog publishing assistance especially strikes us as a natural area for word processing to grow toward.We were pleased to find that stability has improved too. No doubt about it, the multilingual and crossplatform OpenOffice.org is a compelling option for anyone in search of an alternative office suite.

PrimoPDF 4 converts just about any file type to a PDF, using the source program the file was created with and its print command. Two new changes make the program easier to use and more useful. The interface redesign is definitely easier to navigate, and users can now choose to email the PDF instantly after its creation.

The conversion process from whatever document is on your screen to PDF is quick and efficient. Other features include a security feature, which allows the user to wrap the PDF in 40-bit or 128-bit encryption, PDF merging, and password protection. The user also can restrict editing of the new PDF, leaving comments and making other changes.

Primo's size is surprisingly large for such an unobtrusive app, and it's absolutely necessary to launch the read-me file at the end of installation, since the application loads no icons and leaves no other visible traces on your machine, except in the Start menu's All Programs.
