Own a Nintendo Switch 2? Then the last few months were very good in terms of new releases. More and more titles are getting a dedicated release for the console, while older ones are being ported over. This month alone, we've seen 14 co-op titles hitting store shelves - almost half of the amount of PC releases (33)! In total our release calender lists 57 entries across all platforms. So, as always, there's so much to play and not enough time to do it - and autumn has only just begun.

When Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 from Cold Iron Studios and Daybreak Games arrived at the end of August, it was absent from one current-gen platform: Switch 2. Nintendo players weren't having any xenomorph-blasting fun, and that's sad. Well, it turns out that those players will get their chance to shine against the aliens, but not for a little while. Fireteam Elite 2 is coming to Switch 2 in "early 2027." Better than never, right?

We've spent some time with the Xbox version of Fireteam Elite 2, and it has been a blast so far. The game takes place on a research colony from which a distress signal has been sent. When the Colonial marines arrive, they find that the scientist who called for help is missing, colonists have been experimented on and slaughtered, and all manner of alien monsters are running amuck. On top of that, more than one faction wants the base's research, so the marines must contend with military combat synths (androids) as well.

Missions take about thirty minutes each and consist of objectives like searching rooms, accessing files, wiping out alien infestations, defending locations, and evacuating. Things get hectic, and it can be tough at times; my team has failed more than one mission on our first attempt. Thankfully, players still gain experience for the class and weapons they use when a mission ends in failure. Weapons are upgradeable with a variety of parts purchased from the in-game vendor, and each class has a variety of unlockable perks that can be equipped as well. Unlocking those parts and perks seems a little grindy, but I love the dark sci-fi atmosphere and tight cooperative play so far. Stay tuned for our full co-op review!

Oh, and while the Switch 2 version cooks, Cold Iron Studios are busy working on performance upgrades and fixes for the current versions of the game. That's a relief, because the Steam version has suffered review bombing for just those issues. See this post for a hint of improvements to come.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 costs $49.99 on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic. That Switch 2 version that everybody keeps going on about will arrive in early 2027, so don't lose hope, Switch gamers!

Back in the days of yore, Runescape was a popular fantasy MMO. Actually, it's still pretty popular on Steam in the forms of Oldschool Runescape and regular Runescape. Well, now there's a new flavor in town: Runescape Dragonwilds has just launched on current-gen consoles and PC after a period of early access. This one's a cooperative open-world survival RPG instead of an MMO. Well, The Last Gas Station from Alawar dares to imagine just such a brave new world. That world just got a little less lonely because the game has been updated with 2-player online co-op. The station is open right now on Steam.

Several starter skins are available right away, with more unlocking as you progress through the game. 

Please note: both players must own a copy of the game on Steam. 

Shame about the lack of Remote Play Together support, but this still looks like a pretty interesting game. Surely it's more fun than actually working at a gas station. "The worst part is: I wasn't even supposed to be here today!"

Ahh, the shadow drop. What better way is there to build instant hype than to release a game that nobody was expecting, right here, right now? That's exactly what Square Enix has done today with Dragon Quest Heroes: Torneko's Mystery Dungeon -Classic HD-. The original Torneko's Great Adventure: Mystery Dungeon was released on Super Famicom in Japan way back in 1993. Although the PSOne sequel did get an English version, today's release is the first official English version of the original game.

It's very cool of Square Enix to make another classic Dragon Quest game available to English audiences, and on all current-gen platforms! Let's hope that more games will follow, such as Dragon Quest 4-6, Dragon Quest IX (which has co-op), and Dragon Quest X Offline!

In the meantime, a free demo of the upcoming DRAGON QUEST MONSTERS: The Withered World was just released on all platforms, so fans have plenty to keep them busy this week. The Withered World will cost $59.99 when it arrives on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, Switch, and Steam on December 2 of this year.

Look, there aren't many cooperative driving games. There are even fewer that require two players. That's WheelMates from Firevolt, though, a 2-player RC car driving adventure that's built solely for co-op. Thankfully, the game includes a friend pass, so a second online player can join in for free, in addition to 2-player split-screen support. Early Steam reviews are super positive, so this could be the next big co-op game.

Yep, co-op-only games are totally a thing nowadays. BOMBANANA! just came out as well, and Duo Quest is out later this month. WheelMates is the only driving-based game, though, and it features radio-controlled cars to boot. Everything about this game looks like a blast, so we'll be back with detailed co-op impressions soon.

WheelMates costs $19.99 on Steam, and Steam Deck is supported. Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and Switch versions are planned for release in 2027, so console gamers will eventually get in on the radio-controlled fun.

I'm not big on building decks, whether the decks are made of cards or planks of wood in the back yard. Thus, a deck-builder needs to be pretty unusual to peak my interest. Duo Quest from 1 plus 1 Studios and Rising Tide is just such a game. It's 2-player only (local or online), and the cards that players draw require them to ask questions about each other. Answer correctly to damage foes; fail, and the team's adventure might come to a premature end. The quest begins on Steam on September 16.

The Hammerwatch franchise is interesting. Following the excellent Heroes of Hammerwatch roguelike, indie developer Crackshell released the super buggy Hammerwatch II and, to my knowledge, never fixed it up. Despite that misstep, Crackshell and Team17 then returned to the roguelike formula with Heroes of Hammerwatch II on Steam. This one is very good, and some of our team has spent dozens of hours on it so far. Well, the game recently gained even more replay value with the release of the "Celestial Ruins" DLC. It adds a new. a survival mission, unique equipment, and more.

"Celestial Ruins" is the first Expansion to Heroes of Hammerwatch II, a rogue-lite action-RPG that offers extensive persistent progression.

Heroes of Hammerwatch II Celestial Ruins DLC

While we haven't tried the "Celestial Ruins" expansion just yet, we do feel safe in recommending Heroes of Hammerwatch II. After a short single-player tutorial, players can host or join online co-op games for up to 4 players. Like the previous Heroes, the gameplay during runs is quite challenging. This time, reviving a fallen player adds a health penalty to both players, so things get harder the more that someone dies.

A single run can take 1-2 hours, but there are also single-use maps that allow for shorter sessions and high-level rewards. While a run ends when everyone dies or completes the run, there are plenty of permanent upgrades to buy in town, so raising up characters provides plenty of long-term play. We'll try this DLC soon and report back with more detailed impressions!

Heroes of Hammerwatch II sells for $19.99 on Steam. The Deluxe Edition, which bundles the game with the "Celestial Ruins" DLC, regularly costs $24.99 but is on sale for $12.49 through September 14. That's a good price for hours of co-op roguelike goodness! The DLC costs $6.99 by itself on Steam.
