Almost two hundred! That's the number of new entries added to our database in August, many of which where just announced during this year's gamescom festivities. So while everyone keeps eyeing GTA VI (still no co-op announcement!) as the biggest game release of the last decade, there will actually be a ton of interesting co-op titles coming out over the next few months and going into 2027.

Of course, that implies that we are actually waiting for something to play. Looking at our release calendar, that's definitly not the case. August was not a slow month by any means. We can't even begin to name all the noteworthy titles that hit store shelves or left Steam Early Access, so we won't even try. Instead, as always, just take a look below and see for yourself what you might've missed.

The first Aliens: Fireteam Elite was a pretty big hit, pitting teams of three colonial marines against countless deadly xenomorphs. You can't keep the xenos down, as we all know, and now they're back in a big way. Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 from Cold Iron Studios and Daybreak Games ups the ante with 4-player online co-op and cross-play, a new class, a Horde mode, and more. It's out now on all Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and PC.

Features:

  • 4-player Co-op: Expanding from three to four players, AFE2 introduces deeper team-based mechanics that reward coordination and strategic class composition. New and improved classes each bring distinct playstyles and tactical abilities to the fight, making every squad combination feel different.
  • Xenomorphs: The iconic xenomorphs are more ferocious than ever before. AFE2's massive variety of new xenomorphs will force players to stay mobile, maintain situational awareness, and use every tool at their disposal. From stun batons for up close melee action in those most desperate moments, to pyro and electric ammo to whittle down the unrelenting xenomorph front before they overrun you and your squad, the battle can shift from calculated tension to desperate last stand in seconds.

Aliens Fireteam Elite 2

  • Specialist Class: Beyond expanded weapon and gear customization, AFE2 introduces the Specialist – a fully customizable class that lets players mix and match major and minor abilities from every available class. Build a loadout tailored to your exact playstyle and fill whatever role your squad needs.
  • Horde Mode:  AFE2 launches with multiple dedicated Horde maps that push squads to their limits. Battle through escalating waves of xenomorphs and other deadly enemies, earning increasingly valuable rewards as you survive deeper into the onslaught. This is where teamwork and skill are tested at their absolute peak.

We haven't had a chance to dive into Fireteam Elite 2 yet, although I did customize a character and select a class. The cosmetic options are a bit limited but good enough to make a fairly athletic space marine. I also tested the Steam version and found that it runs well on the Steam Deck, which is always a plus. The game is suffering from a bit of review bombing on Steam, but it still looks quite fun to me. We'll dive into Fireteam Elite 2's co-op soon and report back with impressions or a full co-op review!

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2 costs $49.99 on Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, Steam, and Epic. Contrary to some online reports, the Xbox version does seem to have a Windows version with Xbox Play Anywhere support.

Aliens Fireteam Elite 2 Ripley's Hive Exterminator Pack

The game is also available in a "40th Anniversary Premium Edition" for $69.99. This edition includes the "Ripley's Hive Exterminator Pack" and "Herc's Mondo Pest Pack," both of which add cosmetic character skins and new weapons. The "40th Anniversary Premium Edition" DLC contents are also available as a $20 DLC pack, so don't fret if you can't afford the $70 version right out of the gate!

Scott Pilgrim EX, the long-awaited sequel to Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World: The Game, is probably the best new beat 'em up this year. It features gorgeous pixel art, catchy chiptunes, a diverse but manageable open world, and 4-player local and online co-op with cross-play. That's a lot to like! Well, now there's even more to like. Today, the game got a free update alongside the arrival of a DLC character pack.

Free Update

Scott Pilgrim EX Arcade Mode

The new Arcade mode is free to all players. It features:

  • A Tour Through Toronto’s Greatest Hits: Battle through the main locations, bosses and encounters from across Scott Pilgrim EX while fighting toward the ultimate showdown to save Toronto and the band.
  • Chase High Scores: Rack up points, earn extra lives, beat the clock and climb the local rankings in a mode built around replayability, mastery and score chasing.
  • Co-op Chaos: Take on Arcade Mode solo or with up to four players through local co-op, online multiplayer and full cross-platform support. Friends, family and exes can jump in or out at any time without interrupting the action.

Back in the Band DLC

Meanwhile, the paid "Back in the Band" DLC pack costs $3.99 and adds three new playable characters and three assist characters.

Scott Pilgrim EX Arcade Mode

  • Stephen Stills (pictured in suit above): An aggressive rushdown frontman who keeps the pressure on with six string-fueled attacks. Whether he is smashing enemies with his guitar or blasting them away with ear-popping feedback, Stephen stays in opponents’ faces and orchestrates devastating beatdowns.
  • Kim Pine: A hard-hitting mix-up fighter who combines brutal drumstick strikes, stomping breakdowns and goth-cutie attitude. Kim lays down devastating rhythms with explosive drum solos and trades BPM for PPM: Punches Per Minute.
  • Knives Chau: A lightning-fast hit-and-run rogue specialist who overwhelms enemies with acrobatic attacks, shadow clone techniques and her emblematic battle scarf. Agile and elusive, Knives weaves through the battlefield while delivering precise punishment.

New Assist Characters

  • Joseph: The legendary producer behind the band cranks the volume to 11, dropping a towering wall of sound that sends sonic projectiles crashing through the battlefield.
  • Hollie: No-Account Video’s finest employee is done collecting late fees. Armed with her trusty remote, Hollie traps enemies in a relentless barrage of hits, giving players plenty of time to rewind the pain.
  • Mr. Chau: Knives’ fiercely protective father joins the fight. Channel his unwavering determination to summon shadow clone support, turning every attack into a devastating multi-hit assault.

In our co-op review, I called Scott Pilgrim EX's combat "surprisingly deep" and identified co-op as one of the game's "finest qualities." That said, we recently played some online co-op and experienced a few drops, an issue that has persisted since launch. I can't say whether or not today's update improves online stability, but it sure would be nice. At any rate, I'm super excited to play as Knives Chau and hop into that Arcade Mode! 

Scott Pilgrim EX costs $28.99 on Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, Switch 2, and Steam. To celebrate the new update and DLC, the game is on sale for $23.19 (20 percent off) through September 9. Don't waste a minute; pick it up on sale and get brawling!

You know what? Even our Database Master learns something new from time to time! Yes, we were just as surprised as you. Even he didn't know that Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspirary featured a unique co-op mode when it was released back in 2004. But thanks to the games re-release on PlayStation this month, he finally discovered the crazyiness of trying to control the main character in a third-person-shooter with two people: one player handles movement, while the other takes care of weapons and Psi Powers.

On that note, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Call of Duty: Black Ops II also received PlayStation re-releases this month, complete with their multiplayer modes intact. And with Halo: Campaign Evolved, the series finally made its debut on Sony's console this month.

Of course, it was also released on Xbox and PC. And, as is tradition, the PC version doesn't include split-screen co-op. We really don't understand these publisher decisions. In this case, at least, the feature is actually included in the PC version - its just inaccessible. Avid PC gamers already know what we're going to say next: There's already a mod that re-enables it. Ah, the wonders of PC gaming.

Since Tripwire's Killing Floor 3 arrived last year, the game has received several big updates. That's how things have to be if a developer wants a game's multiplayer modes active. The game launched with "perks" (classes) being locked to specific character skins, and fans weren't having it. Well, that issue has since been fixed, and the new "Operation: Shadow Hunter" update primarily adds lots of new content for loyal floor killers to enjoy. We took the game's 6-player online co-op for a  fresh spin and had a blast with it.

The "Operation: Shadow Hunter" update adds the following:

  • Narrative Missions - ‘Operation: Shadow Hunter’: Dr. Emmanuel Moorcroft has ascended to his final, most dangerous form. It's now up to Nightfall to chase down the mad scientist and stop him from opening an even larger rift into the alternate dimension called the Dreadzone—one big enough to swallow whole cities, and possibly the world.

  • Survival Map - Oil Rig: A routine oil-drilling operation in the frigid North Sea accidentally strikes mire, drawing the attention of Moorcroft and his followers, who quickly seize the platform.

  • Perk - Gunslinger: The legendary Gunslinger returns to the fray. Specializing in fast, dual-wielded pistol combat, this perk is for those with nerves of steel and the aim to match. Gunslingers carry futuristic gravity grenades that first implode to pull in nearby zeds before exploding with concussive force. Their gadget, Fatal Focus, is a pair of  deadly smartguns that fire homing projectiles when aimed at enemy weakpoints. The grenade, gadget and more can be improved and customized with a complete skill tree.

  • New Weapons: The update introduces four pairs of dual-wielded primary weapons and a sidearm for the Gunslinger perk, usable by all perks as well.

  • Boss - Moorcroft: It’s time to finally face the bad Doctor himself. After his experiments have failed to stop Nightfall’s year-long pursuit, Moorcroft has decided to handle things - directly. Rippling with muscle and bristling with organic armaments, Dr. Moorcroft has merged with his own mire experiments to become the ultimate doomsday weapon and must be stopped at all costs.

  • New Difficulty - Suicidal: This returning difficulty mode is designed to be a stepping-skull between Hard and Hell-on-Earth difficulties for a smoother transition to the toughest fights.

  • Dual-wield Sidearms Phase 2: The remaining trio of sidearms, the Medic’s KH-380, Sharpshooter’s Disciple, and Firebug’s Pyre .357 can now each be dual-wielded as well as wielded individually. All sidearms now support single or dual-wield functionality.

  • Season 4 Supply Pass: Play and earn 100 new rewards with the latest Supply Pass via both free and paid tracks, including the new Horzine Mark 8 Armor for all available specialists. Supply Passes can be purchased at any time while Supply Points are earned through gameplay, and neither expire.

  • Much More: New Daily Challenges, Wave and Weekly Mutators, Milestone Challenges, Quality of Life improvements including hot-joining friends in-game directly from the main menu, the ability to choose Tier 3 weapon mods during crafting, bug and crash fixes and ongoing balance and optimization work continues. The cosmetic store has also been updated and includes new items including the Ronin Outfit Bundle.

Update Impressions

Killing Floor 3 Operation Shadow Hunter Xbox Series X screenshot

Our co-op team enjoyed several matches on the new Oil Rig map. It consists of outdoor areas (including a central courtyard), several lower decks, and elevated areas as well. Two notable areas include a room with a drill trap that players can activate using a multitool, shredding any Zeds that pass by, and an indoors area that contains a glowing purple portal and various research equipment. The gunslinger is a fun class to play, with lots of dual-wielded pistols that pack a big punch.

The Moorcroft boss (who can also show up on other maps, not just Oil Rig) is a big, scary mutant guy who summons hordes of smaller enemies and periodically spawns a glowing shield over himself. Adding another new boss to the rotation is great for the game's longevity. Tripwire supported the previous Killing Floor games for years, and this latest update puts Killing Floor 3 even closer to matching the legendary quality of Killing Floor 2. The developer also released a roadmap that promises QoL improvements, seasonal Halloween content, and another new map will be coming throughout the year. We'll keep playing and hopefully deliver our long-delayed co-op review by then as well!

Abyssus is a "brinepunk FPS" (whatever that means) from DoubleMoose Games, The Arcade Crew, and Dotemu. After arriving on Steam last year, it has received a handful of major updates. The latest update, version 1.3, does not seem to be popular with Steam players. On the plus side, Abyssus also just launched on Xbox Series and PlayStation 5, and those players probably won't be attached to a previous update. There is 4-player online co-op with crossplay and plenty of brine in store for them!

Update controversy

Abyssus Steam reviews

This week's Version 1.3 update has received a mixed reception from Steam players. A number of recent Steam reviews complain about nerfs to players and the skill tree. Did the developers fix something that wasn't broken? Having not played the game yet, I can't weigh in with any detail, but it certainly looks like some of the changes might be walked back in the future.

What is brine?

Given that Abyssus is a "brinepunk FPS," it's important that players understand what brine even is. According to Vocabulary.com, brine is "water containing salts." Abysuss takes place underwater maybe, and if so, it's quite possible that the water in the game has a high concentration of salt. We'll try to check it our and report back soon!

Abyssus costs $24.99 on Xbox Series and PlayStation 5, and $22.49 on Steam ($14.99 during the Steam Summer Sale). It's currently included in Xbox Game Pass, so Xbox gamers can easily test the water for tastiness before buying. Physical PlayStation 5 editions are available to preorder on Amazon and directly from Silver Lining Direct.

June brings lots of announcements from the big game publishers every year, and this one is no different. Microsoft's Games Showcase was stronger than usual, but what about the Big N? Today, Microsoft held its annual Xbox Games Showcase to announce and highlight the games coming to Xbox platforms this year and next year.
