This is a little late but I have had some computer problems and have not been able to use my key board on my lap top. Seems like weeks ago but has only been a few days. On final Saturday Q-Quentin came through big. He cleared 6′7 and finished 3rd in class 2A. Great job. Q had a very good year, breaking the school record and making All State. Good job! Jacob Heser had a good day on Saturday. We were trying to get him under 10 minutes and with his first mile time of 4:53 he was on track but fell off his second mile, just ran out out of gas. But had a good effort. The weekend was good and was a good way to finish the season.

Well the first day is on the books. Quentin cleared 6′3 to get to the finals. Hess did not make the opening height but was close. He is only a junior so he has a chance to get back next year. The 4×800 ran well the two seniors stepped up and had us where we needed to be. Clark ran a good leg, still a little short of where he wanted to be. Bull went out with a good first leg then just hit the wall on the second 400. He is a sophomore, so he should learn from this. Brummett ran well, didn’t look like it because he was in super fast heat. He should be ready to get back up here next spring to make a return run in the 400.. Saturday Jacob Heser will step onto the track for his 3200 meter race. So we have two events left for Saturday.

I have one more comment about the IHSA Sectional. I want to thank all the volunteers, that came out and helped with the event. We most of had 35 plus people there. I’m going to name a few, and what made me feel good was the former athletes that I coached that came and helped. Former and current athletes-TC Hargis, Doug Jones, Cory Hopkins, Colin Voss, Mollie Owen, Shannon Kalmer, Grant Reed. Then the amount of friends and colleagues-Terry Elwood, Greg Malan, Tom Owen, JD Hargis, Connie Fulton, Terry Heard, Sam and Bill Alli, Meg Grizzle, Sherry Cook, John Boles, Brad Detering, Lou Bryant, Scott Stewart, Bob Fredrick, Clint Wolf, Tyler Lux and I’m sure there were more. great job. Everyone-just shows that Salem can come together and work together in a positive way. Take that Fox News!

Woke up at 5 am. Heard Brad’s alarm going off, so I got up. Turns out to have been a stop watch that beeps on the hour. Oh well-beat the rush to the shower and restroom. Should have good weather today, hope the kids run and jump well. Goals-Quentin gets to the finals in the high jump. Hess clears opening height in the pole vault. The 4×800 run their fastest time of the year. Going to lead off with the two seniors, I hope that leaves both of them with a race. Well it will the Nix in the lead off spot. Then Brummett in the 400, saw where it took 50.09 or something like that to get to the finals in 1A. He will have to get with it. Just hope everyone does well and has a good experience. Then on Saturday Heser in the 3200 meter. His goal is to get under 10 minutes, I would like to see him break 9:58. He needs to have a good race, in cross country the last two years he has not raced well at the state meet. At least the sun is shining and should be a good day.

The rain stopped and the meet went on. The jumping pits were not the best but were usable. We settled things early with who was going to make the trip to state. Quentin won the high jump in easy fashion. With a jump of 6′5. That was in the top five in the state. There were a couple more 6′5 and a 6′9 and 6′7. Hess was second in the pole vault with a vault of 12′6. And then the 4×800 relay was able to hang onto a second place finish in 8:27 our best time of the year to seal their trip to state. The best race of the night was the 400 meter dash. Three guys came borrowing down toward the finish for that 2nd place spot. And after a lot of review Jerod was 4th over all but ran the qualifying time to advance. Jacob Heser was 2nd in the 3200 meter run with his best time of the year in 10:01. So we will head north with a pole vaulter, 400 meter guy, a high jumper, 3200 meter guy, and the 4×800 relay. Almost like last year, only difference is the 3200 meter guy and the lack of the 4×400. We finished 2nd in the meet behind Cahokia. So I was pleased with that. Some disappointments-for some of the seniors. But thats the nature of the beast, some are going to be happy, some are going to be disappointed, but 100% of the time we are all going to get up and keep going the next morning. Have a good one.
