Want to know the secret weapon behind a 132-18 coaching record? It’s not a trick play—it’s the UBSW 16 Power! Get this play in his legendary youth football coaching ebook Winning Youth Football.

The 16 Power is the foundational off-tackle play in Coach Dave Cisar’s unbalanced Single Wing offense and is considered the absolute key to the system’s success. Your kids need to understand one simple truth: if this play does not work, the offense doesn’t work. This is why Coach Cisar recommends prioritizing it in practice above all other plays.

Here is why the 16 Power is the ultimate weapon in youth football:

It is the “Miracle Play” of the Offense
Coach Cisar considers the 16 Power the “single best play in football” and the hardest play for a defense to stop. Forget needing a massive playbook—he notes that “if you teach it right you will not need anything else”. In fact, highly successful coaches in this system have run the 16 Power as many as 42 times in a single game!

It Sets Up the Entire Playbook
The 16 Power acts as the engine for the rest of the offense. Successfully running the 16 Power directly sets up the other devastating plays in the core “Sainted Six” series, including the 18 Sweep, 43 Reverse, 31 Trap, and 32 Wedge. Once the defense bites on the power run, it perfectly sets up the highly effective 16 Pass, which can yield massive touchdowns.

It Forces Defenses to Over-Adjust
The philosophy behind the 16 Power is to ruthlessly pound the defense with it. Coach Cisar will sometimes run it two, three, four, or even seven times in a row to start a game. This relentless approach completely frustrates the defense and forces them to over-play the 6-hole. Once they over-shift, the field perfectly opens up for complementary misdirection plays.

It is Highly Adaptable
If a frustrated defense commits their best players to stop the 16 Power, you don’t need to abandon the play. The system offers simple, one-word tags and adjustments to out-leverage the defense against nearly any front:

Nasty: Widens the split of the Right End to stretch the Defensive End.

Tunnel: Changes the blocking angle to wash the Defensive End outside.

Super / Omaha: Shifts the backfield to bring extra blockers or flank receivers to the play side, neutralizing defensive overloads.

It Utilizes Simple, Overpowering Blocking
The play relies on the highly effective G.O.D. (Inside Gap, On, Down) base blocking rule for the offensive line. Because the line follows this simple rule, you naturally create devastating “accidental double-teams” at the point of attack. This is combined with an athletic pulling Right Guard who leads through the 6-hole to obliterate the linebacker. It creates immense power and a numerical advantage without ever confusing your players.

BUILD A DOMINANT TEAM!
Master the details that win championships with Winning Youth Football by Dave Cisar. Visit and join our coaching community!

The T Formation Offense: Why the Oldest Offense in Football is Still King of Power & Misdirection!

Are you ready for the T Formation Offense? Welcome back, coaches! I’m Coach Parker, youth coach of thirty-plus seasons, and I love digging into the foundations of football,. Recently, I had my high school football coach guru, Zach Davis—host of The Mind of the Football Coach podcast—join me to geek out on an offense that often gets overlooked: the T Formation.

You heard that right. We’re talking about the T Formation Offense. It’s the oldest formation in football, dating way back, and believe me when I tell you, everything seems to flow out of the T into all these other offenses we run today. When I looked into it for my Tiger T Formation eBook, I saw just how true that was.

If you’re a coach looking for a foundational power offense that still works at the youth level (I recommend it around 8U, non-option level) all the way up through high school—and even college short yardage packages, like Penn State was running a couple weeks ago—you need to listen up.

Why We Still Love the T Formation

Zach and I agree: the T Formation Offense is just cool. It’s that old-school style that appeals to us, but schematically, it’s just solid football.

Here’s why the T is effective:

It’s Balanced: The formation is naturally balanced with double tight ends and three backs. This prevents the defense from overloading one side easily. If they try to overload, you just run the other way.

Power and Misdirection: The T can run equally well as a power-based offense or one focused on misdirection. This versatility keeps the defensive coordinator up late at night.

Putting Pressure on Linebackers: When you run downhill out of the T, you put significant pressure on linebackers at the youth level, forcing them to be gap sound. We all know that weak linebackers can get crushed by downhill power.

Great Package: Even if you don’t run it full-time, the T is an exceptional short-yardage package. We’ve seen teams win state championships basing out of the T Formation.

The T has so many variations—from the Tight T, Split T, Modern T, Belly T, and the Michigan T —that you can adapt it to almost any personnel. Zach runs a lot of the Michigan T stuff, which is a cousin to the Dead T. And hey, if you need ideas, my Tiger T Formation eBook has over 200 play diagrams in different series.

The Core T Series: Trap, Power, and Keep

What makes the Michigan T / Power T so dangerous is that the core plays in the series look identical during the first couple of steps. This delay in recognition is killer for the defense.

Zach walked us through the foundational four plays:

1. The Trap Play The trap play is easy to install and a fantastic play to start with,. The fullback takes the handoff and needs to hit that funnel tight, cutting off the tackle’s butt. We tell the back to “run into darkness” because they have to trust the daylight is coming after they cut up inside the center’s position. Meanwhile, the quarterback and the left halfback are faking like they are running power or sweep, forcing the defense to commit.

2. The Power Play This is your bread and butter old-school power football. Out of the T, the power play reverses the backfield action slightly: the play side halfback executes the kick out block, and the fullback performs the trap fake. The backside guard wraps through the hole to lead the main ball carrier (the other halfback). The fake by the fullback is critical—remember, one good fake is worth two blocks, maybe three. You want those linebackers chasing the ghost of the fullback.

3. The Keep (QB Sweep) The Keep is the quarterback sweep, using the same initial action as the trap and power. The key block here is the goo hinge on the backside. This hinge is vital to prevent backside defenders from running down and tackling your quarterback as he sprints to the edge. The right halfback logs the defensive end, and the left guard works for the D-gap player.

T Formation Highlights High School Game

Play Action and Misdirection in the T

The T Formation Offense might not have a massive air attack, but the passing game it does have is deadly because the run action is so convincing.

Keep Pass: This is a play-action pass set up perfectly off the Keep/Sweep run fake. The left halfback runs a corner route, and the tight end executes a quick block down, then leaks out to the flat. Those halfbacks coming out on routes are often wide open, especially against youth defenses focused entirely on the run.

Michigan Pass: This is the basic drop-back pass out of the formation. It features two corner routes (run by the tight ends) and the right halfback running down the middle. If you face a two-high safety team, that middle seam route can hit early for a big gain.

And if you want a great counter, look at the Cross Buck play (which Zach sometimes calls “Dog”). All the action goes one way—the quarterback reverses out 180 degrees, the fullback fakes, and then the ball hits the backside halfback. This is an incredibly hard play to defend on short yardage from the T Formation Offense.

A Note on Youth Depth

Coaches, if you decide to run the T Formation Offense, you must adjust your backfield depth based on your roster. Zach noted that at the high school level, they typically place the backs’ toes four yards from the ball.

At the youth level, you need to adjust that down. Why? Because your guys aren’t as big and their steps aren’t as big. You should probably be at three yards from the ball. The deeper your backs are, the longer it takes for the play to hit the line of scrimmage, meaning your youth linemen have to hold their blocks longer. You want that ball breaking the line quick, about half a second to a second, so the blocking doesn’t have to sustain forever.

Also, remember that you need skilled backs! The T requires a minimum of three quality backs who know what they’re doing because they are all involved in carrying, faking, or blocking.

Welcome, Youth Football Coaches! If you’re constantly debating which football offense scheme from the Spread to the classic T Formation to the unstoppable Beast Offense and the rugged Power I — which FB offense is the secret ingredient for winning youth football, you’re not alone. I recently sat down with Coach Zach Davis to dive deep into top coaching youth football offense strategies and dissect why proven power football offensive systems are making a major comeback against the spread defenses, especially at the youth level but really at all levels. The 425 and 335 defenses are not set up to stop Power Football in my opinion opening the door to run people over.

Zach and I discuss the importance of having a flexible, multi-formation playbook like the Power Wing Beast Offense (PWBO) to match your ever-changing personnel, and we even wade into the age-old debate about offensive line fundamentals: is it who you block, or how you block?
Why Your Coaching Toolbox Needs More Than One Offensive System

This blog, running since 2008, has always been focused on helping rookie and veteran coaches learn about coaching youth football. Much of the information here, especially around football offense systems and strategy, works great for players aged 5 to 14 years old, or up through the 8th or 9th grade. With Coach Zach Davis through High School.

When I was running my teams — I quickly learned that the best football offense for youth football isn’t a single formation; it’s a robust system designed for flexibility. Because our league constantly changes rosters every season, I had to be prepared to modify the offense to suit the particular team I had.

That’s why the Power Wing Beast Offense (PWBO) has served me so well over almost 30 youth football seasons. It’s actually a multiple football offense system I developed over decades, allowing me to take any roster—whether they are “super studs,” middle-of-the-road, or low-talent—and still be competitive. I often advise coaches to have two or three offenses ready that they like, have learned, and can teach effectively. Within the PWBO, I have a speed double wing option, the Beast formation, and several power-centered Multi I variations, which is how I got the name: Power, Wing, and Beast.

The Return of Power Football: T Formation and Power I

Lately, there’s been a definite trend back toward power football. Why? Because defenses have spent the last 20 years trying to stop the spread offense, which has been run heavily since about 2005, ala Air Raid. Now, with defenses geared to stop the fast, spaced, pass oriented attacks, old-school power football offense is winning again in 2024 and 2025.

Take, for example, the T Formation. Zach Davis ran this in 2022 and even did a podcast dedicated to it. It’s a beautiful, fun formation. Did you know the T Formation is the oldest formation in football, dating back to the late 1800s? What makes the T so effective, especially for youth, is the power generated by those three running backs. You can make crazy things work for you out of the T, and it’s somewhat like a pistol formation under the center. In fact, several HS teams in Michigan recently won state championships running either the T or the Power I. These a a great power football offense options.

The T, along with the Power I Formation (which I also offer an eBook on), are pure downhill running schemes. I love the visual look of the Power I—the ability to overwhelm the defense at the point of attack, the counter game that flows off of it, and the play action.

Multi-I Offense

This brings us to the concept of the “Multi-I offense.” The Power I, the Offset -I, Wishbone and the Inverted Wishbone go really well together because the movement for the backs is minimal, yet it looks like a whole new offense. If you want to simplify things, these formations are all downhill concepts hitting around eight different holes, making installation much simpler for youth teams.

However, if you commit to the traditional I Formation, that tailback must be special. He needs to be a hybrid fullback/tailback who is mean, can run downhill, break tackles, and also execute a sweep. If you don’t have that special future D1-caliber player on your pee-wee team, the defense will spy him and target him because they know he’s getting the ball 90% of the time. Furthermore, your offensive line has to be dominant, and your fullback needs to be tough and physical to lead, kick out, and seal blocks. Playing fullback is tough—you’re getting hit even when you don’t have the ball!

The Ultimate Tool: Why I Love the Power Wing Beast Offense

After running almost every system, my brain keeps coming back to the Beast set. What makes it so effective is that it simplifies everything I need to do, and it is quick to install.

When running the Beast, I often have the backs under center or in shotgun. Unlike the T Formation, where backs have long angles and paths to get to their blocking assignments, the Beast is designed to shorten those paths. I have the backs close enough to the line that they can touch the thigh pads of the offensive linemen. This means they only have to go about four steps to get to the defender they need to block, drastically shortening the time and simplifying the path. The Beast Back, when taught correctly, shouldn’t lose a yard because he’s running with his elbow hitting the butts of the linemen, quickly hitting his mark and the hole.

The beauty of the PWBO is that it allows for a teaching progression: simple to sophisticated. I can start with Beast Tight, which is simple, and move to Beast Wide, which is more sophisticated, or even into the FatCat Offense, which is a tricked-out high school offense. The commitment to the entire 500-page PWBO playbook (yes, it’s beautiful and thorough) means you have a huge toolbox—a hammer, a screwdriver, a wrench—to use based on the ingredients you have in your “kitchen,” as one coach called it. Those who truly commit to learning the entire football offense system find that it will evolve with their team all the way through high school.

Modern Systems: The Pistol and Gun-T

For older youth players, especially 11U and 12U select teams, you can introduce football offense systems that offer more variance. I have recently fallen in love with the Pistol formation. It’s very much like an offset I or Power I scheme, but run from the shotgun. For a power team that might not have the best passing quarterback, the Pistol offers short-yardage options and an opportunity to transition toward a passing offense without going full spread immediately. It is easily mixed into a lot of other offenses, whether you want to gap scheme or zone block. If you have a running quarterback who can throw a little, and good receivers/tight ends, the Pistol excels.

The Pistol pairs really well with systems like the Gun-T Multi Wing Offense. The Gun-T system is popular at the high school level, utilizing the 2-by-1 set, which is easier to block than a 2-by-2 formation. If you’re at the select level (10U and up), you can start implementing some RPO concepts, either called by the coach from the sideline or using hand signals, even if the quarterback isn’t ready for complex reads.

And of course, we can’t forget the Double Wing and Single Wing. Coach Cisar’s Sainted 6 Single Wing plays were a gold standard for many coaches. If you can run the Single Wing or the Don Markham Double Wing effectively, they kill people’s will because you can control the clock and simply run people over.

Offensive Line Fundamentals: Who to Block vs. Technique

No matter which power football offense scheme you choose—Beast, T, or Power I—success hinges on the offensive line. Coach Zach and I got into a great debate about blocking philosophy. Is it better to focus on the technical expertise of the block, or ensuring the lineman blocks the right guy?
At the youth level, getting on the right guy is paramount. You don’t need to knock him down; you just need to shield him for a half second. If you’re going the wrong way, the play has a problem, and you’re not blocking the point of attack players.

While technique is a career-long struggle even through college, I focus on getting my hands engaged on the defender quickly, and on the right guy. I am so atypical on the “low man wins” mantra. I want my hands engaged on the chest and leveraging the hip, maybe even getting under the elbow or armpit. Trying to get too low can actually cause you to lose leverage, potentially causing you to roll or cut rather than driving the defender. The idea of just needing to be lower, without considering positioning and power, is one of those coaching myths that is debatable. The goal is to be in a powerful position with good knee bend and ankle flexion, engaging the defender body to body.

Final Word: Coach What You Know

If you are a rookie coach just starting your journey, please check out my Youth Football Coaching Clinic video series. If you’re a veteran coach, keep visiting to research things like my Power Wing Beast Offense and the 62 Multi 8 Defense.

The most important takeaway from our conversation is simple: coach what you know. Coach what you love and what you feel comfortable with, and most importantly, what you can teach. It takes time to install a new offense properly; for me, it takes two full seasons to feel truly comfortable. Don’t be discouraged if it takes a while to get a football offense system installed, unless you happen to have a team full of all studs.

It includes a very unique and proven top down detailed step by step plan for excelling in all areas of the game including how to effectively reach and teach football at the youth level. Includes practice organization, offense, defense, special teams and game day management. Dave’s version of the Single Wing Offense is covered including; plays, offensive and defensive playbook, special teams, personnel descriptions, blocking schemes, drills and daily practice plans. All in easy to understand “non coach speak”. This isn’t theory, it’s what works in youth football.

In this conversation, Zach Davis and Coach Parker delve into how many plays in a playbook for football and the intricacies of football coaching, focusing on offensive strategies, play selection, and the importance of adapting to team personnel. They discuss the significance of having a streamlined playbook, the art of play calling, and the role of experience in coaching. The dialogue emphasizes the balance between plays and formations, the concept of series in play design, and the necessity of confusing the defense while simplifying the players’ understanding. The conversation concludes with reflections on offensive philosophy and the evolving nature of football coaching.

How many Plays in a Football Playbook?

The Great Playbook Paradox: How Many Plays Do You Really Need to Win?

Welcome back, Youth Football Coaches! I’m Coach Parker, and if there’s one topic that gets coaches riled up on YouTube or in the forums, it’s this: How many plays should you have in your playbook and or you run?

We’ve all seen the single wing guys who swear by their “Sainted Six” or “Sainted Eight”, but I’m a Melville guy myself—I prefer multiple options. Over almost 30 seasons of youth football, I’ve found that the answer isn’t a single number. It’s a paradox revolving around one key question: What is a play?

Does tagging a play in a new formation count as three or four new plays, or is it still the same core concept? That’s where the fun starts!

Volume vs. Execution: The Diminishing Returns

I’ve had playbooks with 36 or 48 core plays (that’s 96 left and right!). But my good friend Zach and I agree: if you get above a certain number, you can’t practice them enough, and you get diminishing returns on execution.

What you carry depends heavily on your personnel and their age and football IQ:

Younger Ages (Base 8 and Below): For 8-year-olds and younger, I feel they really can’t handle much more than a base set of eight plays. We stick to that core to ensure strong execution.

Core 24 (10+ Teams): Once I have a group of players that sticks around and develops their football IQ (we even draft smart kids over just talent sometimes!), I move to the Core 24. This is three separate series of eight plays, run out of different formations (like Beast, Fat Cat, or a Speed Spin Double Wing combo).

Why the multiple formations for older kids? Because I’m a defensive guy at heart, and I know defensive coordinators. I believe a coach might figure out how to shut down one of my formations, but they can’t figure out all three.

The Art of the Series

One of the most powerful concepts—especially if you run power football like we do—is the Series. A series sets plays up by making them look very similar, but they hit separate areas of the defense. You’re trying to lull the defense into thinking they have you set up, and then you exploit their over-shift.

My favorite Beast Offense series works like this:

Plays 1 & 2: Beast Left Tank (Power) We run this power play twice to really shift and suck the defense in. Even if we only get three yards, that’s fine, because we are setting up the next play.

Play 3: Beast Left Even Wedge Tackles Once the defense is shifted, the middle (usually the A gaps) opens up. We run the wedge right down the middle, often for 20 yards or a touchdown.

Play 4: Backside Tight End Pop Pass After three straight run plays, the defense is aggressive and sucked in. The backside tight end pop pass hits wide open, leveraging the pressure we created.

Sometimes, you have to take a “hickey” (a small loss) on an early play to set up a bigger strike later. That’s just being a smart coordinator.

The Secret to Volume: Tags and Standardization

If you want to run more volume without confusing your players, you need to standardize your systems.

For our linemen, the blocking is simple—80% of the plays use the same four, five, or six standardized base calls. This means we don’t have to teach our offensive line a heck of a lot when we change plays.

Once the blocking is streamlined, you can add “wrinkles” or “window dressing” through Tags. This is how eight plays suddenly become 70 to 90 on your call sheet!

For example, our offensive line just knows “GT Counter,” but we can run it out of the I-formation, out of the Gun, or out of the Gun with an RPO tag. That’s one core play concept, but it’s presented as multiple volume plays to the defense.

Game Day Focus: The Sweet 12

Even if I have 48 core plays in the library, on game day, we focus hard. Coaches like us may have 70 plays on the call sheet, but the real key is knowing your Top 12 to 16 plays that you’ve worked in practice and that will attack this specific opponent’s defense. If they don’t stop that family of plays, you just keep running it.

And here’s a final tip for my fellow youth coaches: If you are building an offense, you absolutely need to include Double Tight formations. Why? Because the modern 3-3-5 and 4-2-5 defenses in high school and college often struggle to deal with that formation. Double Tight forces the defense to balance up and makes it easier to call plays. In many ways, running power out of the Double Tight is the new spread because defenses aren’t built to handle it anymore.

These are elite Beast Offense Offensive Linemen Player Profiles from OG Beast Coach Parker from his Power Wing Beast Offense playbook for youth football.

The Beast Offense is defined as a power offense, and its success fundamentally relies on dominating the line of scrimmage through superior blocking rather than depending on individual running back talent. To achieve this power scheme, coaches prioritize finding and developing physically dominant offensive linemen who can overpower the defense and consistently move people off the ball. The highly sought-after player profile is a bigger, quicker athlete with great hands and feet, often described as a “fullback type” who possesses the athleticism to develop into H-backs, tight ends, or defensive ends in high school. While the offense uses down blocking techniques that can accommodate technically sound smaller linemen, the ultimate goal is to recruit and draft players who possess above-average size combined with strong technical ability to fully maximize the power advantage.

Beast Offense Offensive Linemen Player Profiles

This emphasis on the offensive line means every position is critical, starting with the Center, who is deemed the most important lineman as the initiator of every single play. Coaches strive to recruit and develop players who are not only quick and strong but also highly intelligent and coachable, ensuring technical mastery across the entire front. From the pulling ability of the Guards to the size and quickness of the Tackles, and the necessary “mean gene” of the playside Tight End, specific player profiles are targeted to ensure the overall team effort excels at power football and masters the blocking techniques required to sustain drives.

Beast Offense Offensive Linemen Player Profiles

Beast Offense Center

The Beast Center is described as the most important offensive lineman, initiating every offensive play, and finding or training a good Center should be as or more important than finding a good Quarterback or Tailback, since the offense will stall without one. This highly difficult and stressful position demands a player who is not weak-minded, but is confident, smart, reliable, coachable, mistake-free, and committed to the role. Above all, the Center must be an accurate snapper, as even one or two bad snaps usually guarantee a loss in youth football, stalling the drive, potentially causing a turnover, and killing the Quarterback’s confidence. Beyond the snap, the Center must manage the huddle, set up the O-line, deal with issues like QBs whispering the snap count or incorrectly positioning their hands, hear audibles, worry about blitzing linebackers, and immediately block their assignment after the snap without being mauled. While a bigger Center is preferred to obscure the QB and protect the “A” gaps, intelligence and snapping ability must be chosen over size when identifying this critical player.

Beast Offense Offensive Guards

The Beast Offensive Guards (OGs) are crucial interior linemen tasked primarily with guarding the Center/QB exchange and blocking the A gaps from Nose Guards and blitzing Linebacker stunts. Their fundamental priority is protecting the Center and the A gaps so the quarterback can successfully accept the snap and initiate the play. While coaches prefer quick-footed Guards, the position is often used to place a slower, large player who can simply take one inside step to protect the interior gaps. Guards must become expert fill and crab blockers to protect the A gap alongside the Center, and they must be willing to endure pain for the overall success of the team. The play side guard is typically one of the top blockers, potentially a “Knight” (play side overloaded guard) or a pulling guard if they are quick-footed, while the weak side guard might specialize in crab blocking or be a slow tackle type. The Guard positions also offer flexibility, as a coach can hide one or two weaker blockers here, provided that at least two of the three interior players (the Center and the Guards) are strong blockers.

Beast Offense Offensive Tackles

The Beast Offensive Tackles (OTs), specifically the Power Tackle and the Weak or Backside OT, are highly important to the success of the Beast Offense’s power scheme, leading coaches to prioritize recruiting or drafting top linemen for these positions. The desired player profile is a big, oversized dude who is highly athletic, possessing quick feet and hands—often described as fullback types, or youth players who may become high school H-backs, Tight Ends, or Defensive Ends. The Power Tackle (or “Pawn”) is typically one of the team’s biggest and best blockers, specializing in power drive blocking and needing to be quick enough to handle stunting defensive ends or linebackers. Conversely, the Weak Tackle must still have above average size, good feet, and hands, but can be a bit slower or bulkier and often serves as the inside post-up tackle in a double team block. Although size is preferred—often targeting big-boned, early-growing players who may be basketball power forwards—coaches emphasize choosing quickness over size for OTs, noting that quick hands and feet are superior to a slow monster.

Beast Offense Tight Ends

The Tight Ends (TEX and REY) in the Beast Offense are vital as they serve as the main receivers in this running offense, but they must also be excellent blockers. Coaches generally seek tall players with above average weight who possess good hands and quickness off the line, often developing into H-backs, TEs, or DEs in high school. The playside tight end (TEX) must be the best blocking Tight End—often described as a “dog” or “bowling ball” type with a “mean gene”—whose primary role is washing out defenders and handling defensive tackles or linebackers, sometimes even being replaced by a Power Tackle type. Conversely, the backside tight end (REY) is the preferred target for quick pass plays and must possess great hands, height, smarts, and the ability to hear audibles, functioning as a tall, medium-sized player who can also deal with the defensive end. While the position is suited for slow fullbacks or smaller, quick OTs with good hands, they must be capable of lining up in various alignments, including Tight Split, Nasty End, Flanker, or Split End, to support the team’s power scheme.

Ultimately, the success of the Beast Offense hinges on finding the right profiled olm player for each specialized position across the offensive line, ensuring complete dominance at the point of attack. Coaches seek athletic, big-boned players with quick hands and feet—often described as “fullback types”—who have the potential to develop into H-backs, tight ends, or defensive ends in high school. This strategic recruiting ensures technical mastery alongside raw power, from the Center, who must be highly reliable and intelligent, to the Power Tackle, who needs size and quickness for drive blocking. When building this line, remember that technical perfection in blocking is paramount, and quickness should be chosen over slow, bulky size to maximize the effectiveness of this power running scheme.

The strength of the Beast Offense lies in its adaptability, utilizing jaw blocking and down blocking techniques that can support varying levels of player experience, even if you are working with Minimum Play Players in a recreational league. However, the strong side of the formation—including the Center, Playside Guard (“Knight”), Power Tackle, and Playside Tight End (“dog”)—must contain above-average, skilled players to effectively move the ball. By prioritizing the development of these essential linemen and focusing intensely on the specific profile needed for each spot, you will maximize your ability to execute power football and make your offense virtually unstoppable. Remember to play for fun, and winning is funner! Beware of the Beast!

How to Effectively Use the Off-Season to Improve Your Coaching

Fellow Coaches, are you hanging up your cleats after a tough season, or maybe celebrating a championship? Either way, the work isn’t over! Champions aren’t just made during the season; champions are made in the off-season. This conversation is the “evergreen episode” you need to listen to, no matter where you are in the yearly cycle.

The Off-Season Blueprint—Stop Making Mistakes and Start Winning Next Year

In this deep-dive video, Coach Parker and Zack unpack the high-leverage strategies that separate serious coaches from those just spinning their wheels. If you’re tired of making the same mistakes and ready to improve your coaching game, this is your required self-scout session.

Three Non-Negotiable Off-Season Imperatives:

The Coaching Autopsy: Self-Reflection is Non-Negotiable Forget blaming the refs or the schedule. The first step to improvement is a tough, honest self-assessment. We discuss how to perform a full coaching autopsy—analyzing strengths, weaknesses, the team, the staff, and even the parents. Crucially, Coach Parker shares techniques like doing player, coach, and parent evaluations (modeled after corporate manager reviews!) to get objective feedback and update your goals. This process forces you to be honest about what worked and what didn’t this year.

Go Deep: How (and What) to Actually Study Are you relying on quick Facebook answers? Stop! We stress the need for initiative to find the information you need, encouraging you to go past the first few pages of Google results where the “real good stuff” often hides. We discuss setting concrete goals for what you need to learn—you can’t study everything, so focus on the 3 to 5 things that will give you the biggest benefit. Topics include mastering high school coverages and studying foundational offenses like the Wing T. We also warn against getting “catfished” by bad advice on forums.

The Secret Weapon: Draw It Out The biggest takeaway? Stop relying solely on digital playbooks. Research shows that when you hand-draw plays on a yellow pad, you remember the concepts better. We explain how this simple, old-school method solidifies complex schemes (like the Beast Offense and the 3-3-5 Defense) and gives you a game-changing mental advantage when calling plays. If you can visualize the weakness, you know exactly what to call. Even experienced coaches need to draw out the plays they buy to truly learn them.

Finally, we hit the ultimate self-reflection test: Would I play for myself?. If the answer is “no,” we cover how moving from “projecting toughness” to earning respect (and even being liked!) can make players run through a wall for you.
