The authors also wrote The Coaching Manager and have obvious expertise in this area.

After reviewing what developmental coaching is, the authors provide an organization assessment of readiness to implement a coaching culture. The assessment has four sections: 1) the cultural context; 2) the business context; 3) the human resource management context; and 4) organizational experiences with coaching. The last assessment section leads into one of the more innovative (and therefore worth reading) chapters, that of A Strategic Approach to Coaching.

Here the authors go beyond the obvious of "linking coaching to business outcomes" and go deeper to the systemic level. The goal is to create a coaching initiative that promotes a sustainable coaching capacity. Here's where the book pays off: the authors show how some "common sense" initiatives to introduce coaching actually work against the long-term sustainability of coaching. For example, if a coach is assigned to a poorly performing manager, what is communicated is that coaching is for those not doing well, thus, managers resist the coaching initiative so they won't be labeled a "poor performer."

Two other especially useful chapters are about how to build and lead a coaching capacity, and how to develop an Internal coaching capacity. These two processes are at the heart of creating a coaching organization. In my view, it will still take partnership with a coaching provider or trainer to do it, but the chapters serve as a guide for the overall process.

The Coaching Organization is one of only a few books on organization-wide implementation of coaching.

Copyright © 2007 Keith E. After a really impactful session with my coach two days ago, I approached a session with one of my individual clients last night inspired and invigorated. And it was a good session, or so I thought.

Today I got an email directing me to his blog! Apparently it wasn;t a good session for him, it was a great one! Why? Well he had made some discoveries during his session and then stayed up all night putting it into practice!

You are about to see a first for an independant property agent in Singapore as this young man starts putting his ideas into practice to support his goal.

So come on, what about doing the same yourselves. Very few of you are taking the opportunity to utlises this space, either for connecting and discussing issues with your fellow coaches, or utilising it for the visibility it can give to your practice. I presume you would like to have a few more clients? If you aren't sure how to set about it all or why you should, maybe you should get a sales coach! :)

Cuddles to all.

Tony L

How to get more value from your ICF membership fees

People! despite it being a public holiday here in Singapore, (sorry gratuitous link to my new office, jsut sooo exciting!) Yes I know all you busy self employed coaches have been doing work in odd moments over the holiday, you know you shouldn't, but thats the way it goes. Me too. Thats why I am still bashing away at the keyboard as the clock strikes one, on the first day back at work. So I thought I would just say Happy New Year to everyone and prove I was working hard.

After all ,as I have just posted over on the Sales Coach's Diary , we all have but a few minutes to go connect with clients before they lose interest as Chinese New Year shopping gets going in a serious way. So off the blocks and get sprinting. The author answers "yes" and makes a compelling case.

Nisbett's thesis is that there is no universal human cognition - all cognition is culturally affected. Through the use of numerous psychological studies he shows a stark difference in the way Westerners and East Asians perceive, reason, and "see" the world. Nisbett begins by tracing the origins of Western and East Asian philosophy, science and society. On this foundation he builds a case that Western and East Asian cognition is very different. He completes the book with two chapters on the implications of such differences to our modern world.

After 15 years living and working in 3 countries in Asia, I can say that there are fundamental differences in the way people from different cultures process, evaluate, and act on information. Everyone views the world through cultural "glasses," and the glasses are all different. Being aware of your own glasses and the glasses of others is a beginning to cross-cultural understanding.

My Japanese colleague has stopped trying to explain to Americans the way Japanese people think - now he just lets Nisbett's book do it. This book provides important research foundations for trainers and coaches who work cross-culturally in Asia.

And the last word goes to . .

Merry Xmas from all of us at The Really Big Impact Company to ICF members everywhere! And to be honest there is much more and better info out on the web than I have for you. Do a quick google and stand well back!

People only learn what they believe they need to learn; and only prcatice what they discover for themselves.

So my suggestion is that Don schedules a blogawareness session for the January or February meeting. Anyone who believes they need to learn will come! We can then provide an introduction to the concepts, from which those willing to experiment and discover will learn and those who don't . . .

In the spirit of self discovery this suggestion is now out in view of all ICF Singapore members, as everyone has received an invitation to join the blog.

If Don receives enough positive feedback we will schedule the session.

Over to you to choose whether you would like to have a Really Big Impact in 2006

Regards

Tony

That's the way to do it

As Mr Punch always says. Just like this!

Feedback on Zo cards

Nicola - I like the idea of Zo cards...maybe we can present this along with media /marketing for the prism award.
