Unruh published in 1960. Great book. I wish some of the top NFL coaches would write some coaching books. I read Rex Ryan's 46 defense book and loved it.

I am really psyched because I am coaching offense this Spring football season and was developing a multiple offense and Coach Otto has the same formations I am planning to use; Double Wing, Single Wing and a Wing T which is similar to the offset I am planning on using. He has several plays which i have never seen before and now plan on using. Coach Otto also uses a multiple defense similar to my 70 / 6-1 / 6-2 Multiple defense I run. It's always nice to find confirmation evidence of your plans. Thanks Coach Otto.

I'll write up a more detailed review over the next few weeks.

Thanks,

I will post a full review in a couple of weeks. I know I am going to love this new football book, because these old books have many gems for running game strategies which are perfect for youth football.
that he believes that football is a game of legs and the primary excercise should be running. I tend to agreee. If you have strong legs and a strong base then football is easier for that player. This off-season my youngest son is playing soccer and he is already getting faster and quicker for this fall.

Twitter and Tweet yourself and find some cool information about coaching youth football. Plus you will learn like minded football coaches on Twitter. Twitter is nothing more than a real time headline / subject feed from real people. Its a great source of niche information on your interest subject matter. And for youth football coaches, there is a ton of good info.

Ok, so I am an Internet Marketer in my real life, but to be honest I finally really using Twitter September 2010 after reading The Twitter Book by Tim O'Reilly and Sarah Milstein.

The biggest mistake I was making was trying to use Twiiter like Facebook. They are two different animals. On Twitter try to find everyone in your niche interest group and follow them. You can follow me here http://twitter.com/#!/coachparker_org and find a ton of football coaches, sportswriters and players from my following list. This is how I got started. I found a several youth football coaches and started following them and their follow lists. Soon I was following close to 300 people. It sounds like a ton but it is not.

Increase the people you follow was the main point the book taught me. Follow more than just your freinds and professional acquaintances. Choose credible people to follow by looking:

Who is following them

How many tweets

Subject of Tweets

Recent activity of Tweets (at least that week)

How many people are following them

For all new youth football coaches that think they may not be good football coaches because they lack football knowledge, "Organization is the foundation of all successful football coaching. This is just as true in the handling of high school and college teams as it is in coaching play for pay professional squads. Organization is the basis for the whole game." Get your self organized find some good assistant coaches and have fun coaching youth football.

It was interesting to learn he coached Joe Namath at Alabama and actually suspended Namath. He also was one of the first coaches to embrace Darrell Royal's Wishbone.

After finishing the Paterno autobiography last week, this autobiography is a little different in that its less about coaching and more about Coach's life but a more enjoyable read, probably for a Cowboy fan. I highly recommend Tom Landry: An Autobiography from Amazon used reseller.

The book is an easy read about Paterno's life and football career. He has a ton of good information for coaches and fans. I was interested in all the coaching information. I especially liked ...the first source of football success is defense, the second is kicking, and the third is offense. A great offense in my experience has to obey one principle above all others; Don't lose the ball in a turnover. Hang onto the football!

I highly recommend this book by Coach Paterno, Paterno by the Book.

Gentleman This is Football Book

Gentlemen, This Is a Football: Football's Best Quotes and Quips is a great little bathroom book and or gift for your football fan. This has some great one liners from some of the best football players and football coaches to use on your youth football team and parents. Or just increase your football wisdom.
This a must read book for any football coach but also any business professional.

A major theme throughout the book is setting a standard of performance excellence and coaching / managing and teaching and then holding people accountable to the performance standard. I love "Winners act like winner before they are winners."

After reading the book The Score Takes Care of Itself: My Philosophy of Leadership, I do not consider myself a control freak anymore. Walsh would even set a standard of performance for his office staff including the receptionist answering the phone. His expectations of excellence included everyone within in the organization on or off the field of play. As a leader you are only as good as your weakest link.

Fritz Shurmur - Eagle Five-Linebacker Defense Football Book

I just started reading Frtitz Shurmer's The Eagle Five-Linebacker Defense. This is a must have book simply for the description of outside linebacker / defensive end play. The play of the outside linebacker "starts with a good take off, or explosion, across the line of scrimmage on the snap." They must "sprint across the line of scrimmage and reacting on the run rather than sitting on the line of scrimmage reading."

Too many time the DE or OLB sit and wait and there is no pass rush or the running back has already gotten a head of steam and its over for contain.

Ive been happy when I've had 4 to 5 assistant coaches that know football and are not "daddy coaches."
I spend a good amount of time on Special Teams in practice, because Special Teams is an easy way to gain an edge in youth football . Even Coach Vince Lombardi knew that an error on Special Teams was usually the difference in close games.
