Fall Youth Writing Program Accepting Enrollments

It's that time of year again!

Coalfield Writers is preparing for the fall youth writing program,and what a program it will be this year!

Marshall University Writing Project, in association with Coalfield Writers and Logan County Schools, will offer Weekend Writer’s Roundup Creative Writing Camp for students. Camp is open to all area students in grades 2 through 8, and will be held on the evening of Friday, October 7, at Logan High School.

Creative Writing Camp is open to all area students currently enrolled in grades 2 through 8 this school year.

Registration fee for the creative writing camp is $20, and includes all supplies, snacks and ice cream social.

The theme this year will be POTTERWRITES.

This creative writing round up will offer students the chance to write in many styles. All lessons will focus on magical wizarding world created by J. K. Rowling in her famous books, and the movies they inspired. All lessons will be new, and students who have attended previously can repeat for an entirely different camp experience.

Round up is under the direction of Karen Dillon and Debbie Holly, and all teachers in the program have received extensive writing training on local, state, and national levels. A dozen more teachers will be on staff during the roundup, so the student teacher ratio will be small, allowing students to have direct instruction in writing skills.

Space is limited

Only 15 students in each group can be enrolled. The application deadline is September 15, 2011 and will not be extended.

Summer Institute 2011 wrapped up on July 1, 2011. Six new Teacher Consultants have joined the ranks of the National Writing Project, Marshall University Writing Project, and Coalfield Writers. As we continue the work in the Coalfields of West Virginia we are happy to share with you some of the sites, sounds and images of the institute.

My spot is skate-shot! On skate-shot you have only a skateboard and an air soft pistol. All you have to do is ride around on a skateboard shooting each other with the air soft gun. When you get shot then you’re out! Last person standing wins!

All Star Sports Writer Summer Youth Writing Camp

During the third week of June, twenty area middle school students gathered at Chapmanville Middle School to participate in a summer creative writing camp sponsored by Coalfield Writers, Logan County Schools, and Marshall University Writing Project. Themed All Star Sports Writers, this summer’s camp focused student’s attention and writing around stories of athletics and athletes in a variety of fields.

During camp students participated in writing lessons on voice, setting, sentence structure, word choice, and character traits. The camp was planned and delivered by Teacher Consultants Karen Dillon and Debbie Holly. Guest Teacher Consultant Bob Miller joined the camp for one day.

Employing research based teaching strategies during the camp, students enjoyed many opportunities to publish their writing in creative and artistic styles. Camp directors also ensured that students participated in several activity and exercise periods each day, to capitalize on research showing that physical activity enhances brain building and facilitates learning.
