1.  Brighten up a room with coastal style lamps.  Lighting at different levels in rooms can create a vibrant impact.  Many people think by just adding a few table lamps here and there will be adequate. But that's just what they get: adequate.  Instead try illuminating a room by varying the lighting to create different moods at different times.  Create a cozy beach cottage look with classic cottage shutter lamps in weathered finishes. One of the easiest ways to decorate the bathroom in coastal decor is to use luxury towels with a nautical theme. These can be bath towels, hand towels, or guest towels. A nice fluffy towel goes a long way to making your bathroom seem more nautical. 

Hurricane lamps look great in a bathroom, specifically ones done in silver, clear, or cobalt blue. When decorating your bedroom in beach decor, don't forget the surfaces. 1.  Have a Plan 

It's important that before you start buying any accent pillows that you plan for your overall coastal decorating scheme.  Study your existing furniture, is it beach themed furniture? Do you have any wall art? What about the colors or patterns on your existing sofa and chairs?  What are they like? 

Once you've determined what you have, you can determine what complements and contrasts with it. Most often you're looking for a contrast instead of something that blends in. For example, if your sofa is a light color or has a delicate pattern, you may want to go with a coastal themed accent pillow that has a single bold graphic done in a powerful color, like a red crab for instance. 

2.  Odds are Better than Evens 

The next rule for seaside decorating with accent pillows is that odds are more often better than evens. Specifically, if you're looking to put accent pillows on the sofa or couch, then you may want to consider five: Two large accents pillows, two medium ones, and one small one.   

The smallest pillow should be the most distinct pillow, with the most interesting texture or the boldest graphic. You need something that will set it apart from the other pillows and draw attention to it. Even though it is small, it'll make a big statement. 

The pair of large pillows in this example should be the most subdued.  This can be accomplished with color or with a fine delicate pattern, like small white seahorses on a blue background for instance. 

The medium pair of pillows should contrast with the large pillows, but still complement them. For example, if the large pillows have small graphics (like the seahorses mentioned above), then the same graphic, only larger, would work for the medium pillows. Such as a single large seahorse against a blue background. 

You don't need to rely strictly on color or pattern alone to make this contrast; it can also be achieved with distinctive fabrics such as burlap, cotton or woven. 

3.  KISS- Keep It Seriously Simple 

Above all, the number one rule in chic home decorating with seaside decor is to keep it simple. We've already mentioned that you don't want to have more than five pillows on any single sofa or couch. Loveseats should have 3 or 5 pillows, while large chairs or recliners will look great with up to three. A basic chair should have one pillow. While all pillows should be somewhat similar and complimentary to one another, they should not necessarily be the same pillow. 

Be bold when you pick your pillows, experiment with different colors, patterns, shapes, and textures. Look for pillows to provide a sharp contrast but still look good together. That's the real secret of decorating withcoastal style accent pillows.

East Coast North

East Coast north refers to areas like New England. When you're decorating your home in a beach theme New England style, then you should focus on the gray color scheme. That's not to say everything is gray, but that everything has been mixed with a little tiny bit of gray, even the reds and the blues. Weathered wood with a white finish is a common New England beach theme color scheme finish. 

East Coast South

As you get closer to Florida, you enter what is known as the ‘subtropics’. The subtropics actually have a color scheme all their own. There's much less gray in the subtropics and it is replaced by more vibrant blues, coral pinks, and seafoam greens. Whitewashing was common in the South, so a light white wash over gray weathered wood is considered appropriate. 

Tropics

When you enter the Caribbean and points more South with your beach theme color scheme, then you have officially entered the tropics. The beach closest to the equator has an entirely different beach theme color scheme and feel. The sand here is like fine powdered sugar, the ocean is a deep turquoise. Whitewashing was never very common in the tropics, but exotic woods like teak or mahogany were popular with the upper classes. Aged exotic woods and dazzlingly bright colors look great in this beach theme color scheme. 

West Coast

California and other points on the West Coast enjoy some of the most unusual color schemes of any seaside décor color scheme. Not only does California often use the color scheme of the tropics, their colors have ‘desert sand’ undertones just as East Coast north has a gray undertone. The wood on the West Coast is often gray and weathered, no whitewashing, and is most often not tropical wood. 

Overall, the thing to remember about the color schemes of different coastal regions is that the closer you get to the equator, the brighter and more vibrant the color scheme becomes. You'll notice we did not talk much about African or European beaches here, but they do have a color scheme all their own, and it's beautiful too.
