OmniVision To Merge DSC And DVC Markets With Newest CMOS Sensor

OmniVision has just recently launched a new CMOS sensor that’s capable of capturing 14.6 megapixels and 60fps, 1080p videos. That means that very soon, we’ll be seeing 14.6-MP digicams/camcorder models — likely blurring the division between still and video cameras.

The new CMOS sensor comes in two versions — OV14810 for digital cameras and OV14825 for mobile devices — and offer an option for users to get one camera instead of separate still and video cameras. This also means that mobile devices will soon be making the move to full HD video and high-res photography.

The new sensors may very well spark a paradigm shift in the DSC and DVC markets, and if the technology gets mainstream support, camera companies may have to rethink their offerings for the next few years.

The new sensors will begin production in the second quarter of the year. That means we’ll be seeing devices sporting the new sensors in time for the holidays. Myself, I don’t think I’ve ever started my Christmas list this early in the year!

Lenovo Unveils IdeaPad U1 Tablet-Laptop For CES 2010

CES 2010 is officially underway in Las Vegas, which means it’s going to be a pretty exciting next two weeks for the tech world. For Lenovo’s part, they’ve been keeping a low profile lately, and everyone thought SMB-class and new enterprise-class PC’s were going to head their CES lineup. But just before the show started, they surprised everyone with a new hybrid tablet-laptop.

Dubbed the Lenovo IdeaPad U1 hybrid tablet-laptop, it’s basically an 11.6-inch multitouch devices that can be a laptop, a tablet, and smartbook at the same time. What makes the device remarkable is its detachable multitouch screen, which functions as a Qualcomm Snapdragon and Linux-based slate tablet. (The laptop runs on Intel Core 2 Duo and Windows 7 Home Premium — meaning the device has two processors and two operating systems.)

The idea does look interesting, although how well it’ll perform in the market still remains to be seen. The device is not yet available, slated for a June release at a price tag of $999. No doubt Lenovo is very carefully monitoring responses around the world, taking note of possible tweaks and other surprises it can squeeze in before June.

Skype To Bring HD Video Calls To Internet TV’s

Everyone knew it was going to come eventually, but Skype finally announced that the latest version of its video-calling software will now support HD-quality VoIP calls. But that’s not all — Skype is also planning to partner with Panasonic and LG to eventually bring the HD video calls to Internet-compatible TV’s, too.

That means that you don’t have to sit in front of your PC when you have to take or make a Skype call — now you can do so right in your living room. I’m not sure how that setup will work when you have to take a TV video call while your friends are watching the big game, but I guess Panasonic and LG are sold on the idea. Skyping on your HDTV will be possible later this year.

You’ll need an HD webcam to make video calls on your HDTV, though, and Skype will be unveiling a line of HD webcams very soon. The FV Touchcam N1 will be available next month for an estimated $70 to $100, and the FreeTalk HD Pro ($120) will hit virtual shelves the month after.

It’s great to see Skype making their already great VoIP service even better.

Eye-Fi Pro Wireless SD Cards Get Upgrade

The Eye-Fi wireless SD cards are pretty cool — with an already-hefty 4GB of storage and its usability over wireless connections, it’s already netting a growing fan base among photographers. But Eye-Fi didn’t seem satisfied, and came up with upgrades to the little babies just in time for CES 2010. Now, the Eye-Fi Pro X2 has twice the storage — 8GB — and supports faster transfer range and speed via 802.11n Wi-Fi.

What’s more, the doubling-up on storage space and transfer speed doesn’t mean doubling-up on the price either — it still costs $149.99 a card. You can still upload RAW, video, and JPEG files from your camera without having to plug to the PC. Another new feature, Endless Memory, can automatically free up space as photos and videos are offloaded, whether to your PC or to the Internet.

Initial reviews say that offloading files to a PC via the Eye-Fi Pro X2 still isn’t as fast as using a USB cable or card reader, but is one step faster when it comes to uploading media straight to the Internet. Still, it’s always fun having the option to offload your photos from your camera to your PC without having to plug in.

IPEVO Tubular Wireless Speakers

IPEVO, known for their VoIP hardware is back again, announcing their Tubular Wireless Speakers. Using Bluetooth technology, the pair of three watt speakers are capable of connecting to any bluetooth enabled music player, be it a mobile phone, desktop pc, notebook, or an Apple product such as an iPod.

The wireless speakers have an effective range of 32-feet and when not in use, their compact design (2.5 x 5.5 x 2.9-inches) and small size (9.5 ounces) makes them a portable speaker system if you so choose to take them on your next trip. As to how they get their name, it’s because the two speakers can be joined through a simple twisting action when not in use as well as disconnected using the same motion when you want to use them.

Tubular comes with three control buttons that are used to turn the unit on/off, adjust volume as well as to navigate through music tracks and pause and play music as needed.

Tubular is also powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery that offers up to 8 hours of playback time and 100 hours of standby time before charging is required. The portable wireless speakers will retail for $79 through IPEVO.

Dell Mini 3 Smartphone Coming To AT&T

Dell confirmed that the US based mobile phone provider AT&T will be the third carrier to offer the Google Android powered Mini 3, behind China Mobile and Claro from Brazil. Although not confirmed yet by AT&T, it’s suspected that the phone specifications will be similar to that seen when the smartphone launched in other global markets.

Hence, expect to see the Dell smartphone come with a 3.5-inch display screen that supports 640×360 pixel resolution, 3MP autofocus digital camera with integrated flash and video capture support, Bluetooth, GPS and a microSD slot that can take cards up to 32GB in size.

We should start to see AT&T offer their first Android phone within the next couple of months at which time we should have a much better picture when it comes to pricing and specifications.

Sling Touch Control 100 Remote

The folks that brought us the TV streaming Slingbox multimedia broadcaster are out with a new gadget, this time, a touchscreen remote control. The Sling Touch Control 100 packs a 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreen LCD display that supports a 272×480 screen resolution.

The device uses an 802.11 WiFi network connection to communicate with SlingGuide enabled devices as well as personal video recorders (PVR) but it is also compatible with older non-IP devices such as the digital set top boxes through a standard infrared (IR) connection. The user interface is clear and bright, offering detailed information about upcoming programming choices.

Regarding availability, it appears that the remote control will be offered to cable and satellite TV providers as well as set top box designers who in turn will brand the device under their own corporate names.

Zomm Mobile Alarm System For Mobile Phones

Like a set of keys, it is so easy to misplace a mobile phone. Just leave it on a table not thinking about it and the next thing you know, you can’t recall where you set it down. Zomm, an Oklahoma based consumer electronics outfit has developed a wireless device that it hopes will alleviate some of the frustrations created by this scenario.

The gadget, known as the Zomm wireless leash remains in contact with your bluetooth enabled mobile phone through a wireless bluetooth connection. The premise behind this idea is that you always keep the small keyfob like device in your possession and the moment you walk “out of range” of your mobile phone, an alarm will sound advising you of this situation.

The wireless leash does have a couple of other features in addition to keeping tabs of your cell phone. First, it can act as a panic button which when triggered will call emergency services through your mobile phone. Secondly, the unit also acts as a duplex speakerphone and can alert you of incoming calls.

The Zomm runs on a rechargeable lithium ion battery which offers about 3 days of use on a single charge. Expect to see the wireless leash this summer when it will retail for about $80.
