&lt;br /&gt;
In this post we are hoping to answer some question about the differences between the solenoids used in the oem application and the aftermarket ones.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The one used from factory are manufactured by Mitsubishi Electric and 
have the Mitsubishi logo stamped on the bottom of the solenoid.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The aftermarket ones do not have the logo and the stem is a different color, at least in the aftermarket one we where able to find.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

 &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Another thing I wanted to point out is as I was going to take
 the picture of the two solenoids they slipped out of my hand and both 
fell to the floor.&amp;nbsp; The aftermarket one broke as you can see in the 
picture below.&amp;nbsp; At the time of this posting I would strongly recommend sticking to the oem solenoids.&lt;br /&gt;

In this one we will take a better look at the differences between the NV125 and LWX-500 BMW Transfer Cases.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The NV125 was used from 1999 to 2003.  But here is the thing, the LWX-500 was also used in 2002 and 2003 models and in 2003 a new electric shift t case was introduced to replace the the other two.  In short if you have a 2003 you could have one three different transfer cases.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The first thing I would look for is a shift motor like the picture below.  If you have a shift motor than you have an ATC-500.&lt;br /&gt;

Once you have determined you do not have a shift motor than you need to figure out if you have the NV125 or the LWX-500.  I have seen the LWX-500 in 2002 and in 2003.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
For beginners the first place to look is at the rear of the transfer case.  The tag for the NV-125 or the engravings for the LWX500 will be located in this section.&lt;br /&gt;

On the inside we will look at one of the more obvious differences, like the planetary gear.&lt;br /&gt;

As you can see from the pictures above the planetary gear for LWX-500 has a shaft integrated into it and the other one is just the planet.  Both have three gears each.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Another internal difference between the two is in the rear case half where the back of the front output shaft sits.  The The New Venture 125 has a smaller pressed in bearing where as the LWX-500 has a bigger bearing.&lt;br /&gt;

After a few phone calls and emails regarding the  stamping we decided to post pictures of all the different stamping we  can find and open a discussion on the subject. In 2003 there could have been one of three cases.  The NV125 is clearly identified by the round red tag that indicated it is an NV125.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The the LWX-500 was produced for only a few months and is similar to the NV125.  It has a planetary gear and no electrical components.  This case does not have the distinctive NP round tag.  Although very similar to the NV-125 there are part changes in the inside like the output shaft aka driven gear.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the ATC-500 the planetary gear was replaced for a clutch pack (frictions and steels) and a shift motor (an electrical component). Ever wonder what that means?  It stands for Integrated Transfer Case.  Vehicle manufactures have made arrangements with transfer case companies like New Process to produce or modify transfer cases specifically for a particular vehicle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 2003 the Mercedes Benz ML320 went from using the BW4409 to the ITC.  In 2011 the Jeep Grand Cherokee introduced the ITC and from what I am able to tell the LandRover Discovery in 2010.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As sections of the industry moves to All Wheel Drive systems instead of having the option for it, more of the ITC and cases like it are likely to keep pooping up. We all know that it is a real good idea to change them all once you are in there. Not sure what it is or how expensive its going to be to fix?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We hear that a lot around here.  The Cadillac SRX came equipped with the Borg Warner 4476 Transfer Case.  The transfer case sends some of the power produced by the transmission to the front wheels and the rest goes to the back wheels.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The original transfer case chain (CT-HV-080) was replaced with the  &lt;a href="http://cobratransmission.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&amp;amp;cPath=3_2131&amp;amp;products_id=55056005"&gt;CT-HV-095&lt;/a&gt; chain.  The 095 was developed for the Cadillac 265 and 295 equipped with the BW4479.  Our understanding is both chains are the same in every manner except the 095 is a bit stronger.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The usual symptoms of a chain needing replacement is the sound of a popping noise under the vehicle when you speed up from a complete stop or the vehicle is under a big load.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you would like to identify the transfer case model just go under the vehicle and locate the transfer case. The first one was the New Venter 125, the second is the ATC500 and the latest one is the ATC700.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The NV125 is relatively a simple case to work on.  It has three major bearings, three seals, a drive and driven sprocket, chain and other smaller parts.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ATC500 on the other hand is a bit more complex.  Unlike its predecessor it replaced the planetary gear with a clutch pack and contains a pump and a shift motor.  This unit was introduced in late 2003; around October of '03.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are not sure which case you have you can simply go to the case and check for the transfer case shift motor.  There are other exterior difference but this is the most obvious.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Internally you already know about the planet and clutch pack as well as the pump.  You can also look at the chain.  The chain has one blue link for the NV125 and two blue links for the ATC500.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The ATC-500 also has four instead of three major bearings and two plastic dust covers (the other having only one metal dust cover).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;More information will be coming for the ATC700 as it comes in. The case is aluminum and has a casting number of "T45" and is a three piece unit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unlike other standard transmission units where there could be several different possible kits depending on the size of bearing or other part the T45 is a bit simpler.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The differences in the kits appear to be by date. There are other models that are not mentioned here because they where used in vehicles or model not present in the states; and as a result we do not carry parts for them.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Depending on year and version the cases could be aluminum or steel.  The W40 speed was used in base model vehicles and where introduced in 1970 2wd Toyota Celica and Corona and was also used in the Pickups.  The W46 went into service in 1983 in the pickup truck in 2 and 4 wd.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The W50 was equipped in the Pickup, Celica, Corona, Cressida and Supra from 1972-1981.  In 1983 the W56 was an option in the Pick-up and 4-Runner; in 1982 the W58 for the Cressida, Supra and Tacoma.  And the W59 came in the Pickup Truck, Tacoma, T100 and 4Runner from 1992 and up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We carry many parts for all the gearbox models mentioned above including the rebuild kit, seal kits, shafts, synchronizer blocker rings, bearings, races, bushings and sliders. The first way is to use the Vehicle to Transmission Index located &lt;a href="http://cobratransmission.com/index.php?main_page=page&amp;amp;id=35"&gt;here&lt;/a&gt;.  Or you can simply go to the vehicles Serial Number Identification Tag which contains engine and transmission information.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another option is to go the drivers side door and you will find a sticker or plaque with a series of information including the vehicle's vin or chassis number, manufactured by info, manufacturing date (usually month and year) and other valuable information and codes.  The code we are looking for is located in the bottom left hand corner.  In the example below it reads: A/TM - 742/A140L  This means it is an Automatic Transmission (A/TM) and the model is A140L.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The last but not least way to check is to find the tag information off the transmission itself. It has 7 forward speeds and 2  reverse speeds.  This unit is also referred to as the NAG-2, V7A-700 and the 7G-Tronic.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As best we can figure out the 722.9 transmission was introduced back in 2000 in the C Class Mercedes Benz for the markets in China, Egypt, Germany, South Africa, India and Malaysia.  It came to the State in 2005 in the C Class, E Class and the S Class.  Since then it has been introduced in a variety of different MB vehicles for most markets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The valve body is one of the larger ones we have seen around here.  Bigger than Nissan's &lt;a href="http://cobratransmission.blogspot.com/2010/11/tcm-and-valve-body-joined-re5r05a.html"&gt;RE5RO5&lt;/a&gt; valve body. It has eight solenoids, speed sensors, electronic control module (ecm) and fluid temperature sensor all incorporated with in the valve body. The Jatco designation for this unit is the JR507E&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The RE5R05A is a 5 speed rear wheel drive transmission that can be used with a transfer case for 4x4 and all wheel drive applications. In addition to the vehicles already mentioned it is also used in the Pathfinder, Armada, Caravan, Fairlady Z Roadster, Fuga, Navara, NV, Skyline, Stagea and Titan.  For the Infiniti we have the EX35, FX35, FX45, G35, GR37, M35, M45, Q45 and the QX56.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There are three designs to the valve body.  The second and third are equipped with the transmission control module (TCM) right on the valve body.  All three designs have two versions; one version has a low ohms low coast solenoid and the other version has the high ohms low/coast solenoid.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To the best of our knowledge there are possibly 3 or 4 different manufacturers for the low coast solenoid (Mitsubishi, Bosch and Hitachi).  The solenoid should be interchangeable as long as the ohms resistance is correct.  The valve bodies are not interchangeable from one resistance to another.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There might be other options within the valvebody that can further complicate the identification of the valve body. The case saver was designed to fix an issue with some New Process transfer ceases.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The pressure load from the pump has a tendency on working hard in the slots of the case half where the pump is fitted.  With time this can cause leaks and case failure.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The case protector drops in to the case where the pump normally would and then the pump on top of it. It was introduced around 1990 and produced up to vehicle year model 2003.  There are two different versions of the A518; the hydraulically controlled unit referred to as the 46RH and the electronically controlled one referred to as the 46RE.  The electronically controlled units have more solenoids in the valve body that the other one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When conducting a transmission rebuild the valve body should be inspected to make sure all is working well.  If the valve body is damaged it should be replaced during the rebuild.  This will avoid the extra cost and time of having to replace it later.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are simply looking to increase power, harden shifts, correct known issues or totally reprogram the valve body consider one of the many valve body recalibration kits or shift kits available for this unit.  Depending on the kit this could be accomplished in a day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you do come across a defective, damaged or weak valve body then you need to take the plunge and replace it.
