BMW ATC35L And ATC45L

Around late 2009 early 2010 BMW introduced two new transfer cases, the ATC35L and the ATC45L.

The ATC35L is a gear driven transfer case. Which means there is no chain making for a more compact unit. This unit is used in the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 Series coupes & sedans and the X1.

The ATC45L is a chain driven transfer case used in the X3, X4, X5 and X6s. Both the 35L and 45L are electrically shifted and have clutch drums.

With the introduction of the ATC400 and ATC500 in the X3 and X5 respectively, BMW moved from a more traditional transfer case to the electric shifted clutch pack system.

These units have a drum with frictions and steels known as the clutch pack. The clutch pack is activated by the electric shift motor which receives information from various sensors in the vehicle.

We are starting to see phone calls for bearings, seals and friction and steel kits for both units and the chain for the 45L.

Identyfing The BMW X5 Transfer Case

Steve, an owner of a European garage from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, was agitated when he called about a month ago. He ordered an output shaft for a 2002 X5 and it was not the correct one.

I asked if he was working on an NV125 or an LWX500. He responded the LWX-500 according to the vin number. I then asked him to look at the rear of the transfer case, the side that faces the rear wheels, and look to see if there is a tag with NV125 on it and he said yes.

How can this be? Not sure why but in 2002-2003 the X5 could be equipped with the LWX500 or the NV125 transfer case. I've seen several instances where the vin number does not reflect the correct transfer case. I had one customer with a 2003 with the ATC500 and if you searched for the vin it gave two options, the LWX500 or the NV125. It was off completely for this vin.

So how do I know which one I have? The easiest way is to look on the rear case. The rear case will have a round tag with NV125 or an engraving with LWX or ATC. When ordering parts or a complete transfer case, especially for 2000-2004 you want to check to make sure.

JF506E 09A Solenoid Not Shifting

Gary M. of North Carolina called a couple of weeks ago about a transmission issue of his 2003 VW Jetta. He explained when he turned the car on in the morning it would have trouble shifting gears and after 15 minutes or so it would shift just fine. I suggested he should take the car to have it scanned to see if any codes came up. He said he took it to his local auto parts store and the scanner came up with nothing.

So what is going on? What is this so-called morning sickness? How is this possible he asked? Can I just change one or two, or three solenoids to fix the problem?

This transmission is the Jatco JF506E, also known as the 09A by VW, is a 5-speed front wheel drive automatic with 9 solenoids. The solenoids are heavily tasked during shifting. More than one solenoid could be, and usually is, working in order to accomplish the shifting process.

The solenoids have a small shaft that moves in and out. The shaft sits on a small bushing, much like the bushing you find in the tail housing of a transmission. With time, the bushing starts to wear down. When the transmission fluid is cold it is thicker (more viscous) and the solenoid shaft gets stuck on the bushing. When the transmission reaches operating temperature the fluid is less viscous and the solenoids work as it should for the most part.

The N92 solenoid, one of two with a green connector, usually is the canary in the mine. One solenoid could cost between $45.00 to $100.00 or more. Replacing three solenoids could end up costing more than the kit. Replacing all nine solenoids while you are there is a good idea. The oil is expensive and you don’t want to do this again.

Gary ordered a solenoid kit and called to let us know that it all went well and he is back on the road.

Things to check while replacing solenoids:

1 . Inspect the solenoid and sensor wire harnesses to make sure they are in good shape.

2 . Make sure all the solenoids to harness connections are lined up property and secure.

3 . Use the vehicle manufacture’s recommended oil only.

4 . Have a pan gasket ready just in case you need one (our kit comes with a free gasket).

5 . Make sure you have an original solenoid kit for this transmission model like the one we sell, click here to see the listing. We hear a lot of problems with the aftermarket ones.

CD4E Sprocket Bushing

The CD4E is a four-speed front wheel drive automatic transmission used in the Ford Probe, Escape, Mondeo (Non-US Model); Mercury Contour, Mystique, Cougar; Mazda Tribute, 626 and MXS.

When re-manufacturing or rebuilding the transmission it is always a good idea to inspect the bushings and replace as needed. The bushing kit is a popular item for the CD4E.

One particular bushing to pay extra attention to is the sprocket bushing. This specific bushing is prone to nicks and damage like in the picture below.

ATC400 ATC500 Thrust Bearings

The ATC400, ATC500 and ATC700 transfer cases used in the BMW X3, X5 and X6 use a very similar sprocket assembly.

The Sprocket assembly consists of the Drive Sprocket, Actuator Arms, Drum Plate, Thrust Bearings, Drum, set of Frictions, set of Steels, Pressure Plate, Wave Rings and a Snap Ring that hold it all together.

Sometimes the thrust bearings explode or come apart. If caught in time the two bearings could be replaced and the unit saved. Sometimes the damage is catastrophic and will need to be evaluated closely to see which parts will need to be replaced in the transfer case.

The biggest issue was finding the thrust bearings. Inventory was hit or miss because they were only available good-used.

Bimmer ATC-300 Actuator Motor

Much like most modern transfer cases the ATC300 uses a shift actuator, or shift motor, to engage the 4 wheel drive system.

The ATC300 is used in the BMW 3 Series and 5 Series from about 2004 to 2013. There are several variations of the transfer case for those years, which are 27107599693, 27107599690, 27107613153, 27107613152, but luckily all of them use the same actuator - part number 27107546671.

New Process 242 Transfer Case

The New Process 242 is a 2 speed, chain driven transfer case used by multiple vehicle manufactures.

The NP242 was first introduced into the market in the Jeep Cherokee and Wagoneer in 1987 and later used in the Grand-Cherokee and Liberty. Tags for the early Jeeps will read NP242AMC. Once Jeep changed ownership to Chrysler, the tags read NP242J.

Civilian Hummer H1 5.7, 6.2, 6.5 and 6.6L came equipped with the 242 and the 6.2 and 6.5L military version came equipped with the 242 as well. The NP218 was also used in some of the military H1.

Dodge also used the transfer case in the Dakota and Durango with a variation in the input shaft bearing of 16 or 24mm wide (NP242D).

To properly identify the case simply go to the back of it, the side facing the rear tires, and look for a round silver and red tag. On the tag you will find the model number, ratio and other information relating to the case.

The range for the transfer case is 2WD High, 4WD High, 4WD Part Time, 4WD Low and Neutral.

BMW X5 ATC500 Transfer Case

In 2003 BMW updated the transfer case for the X5 going from a chain driven non-electric transfer case to a chain driven electric transfer case known as the ATC500.

Although introduced in 2003 some still came with the non-electric transfer case. The best way to know for sure is to go to the rear of the case and look for a round tag or engravings. The easiest way is to look for an electric motor with a connection that goes to the vehicles computer.

Unlike its predecessor, the ATC500 has a clutch pack, electric shift motor (actuator) and the wires that go from the transfer case to the vehicles computer.

Most issues for this transfer case, like many that are chain driven, is the chain stretches over time and will need to be replaced.

New Process NP273D and NP273F Trasnfer Case

The NP271 and NP273 are used in both Fords and Dodges pickup trucks and known for their size and strength. The 271 is manually shifted and the 273 is electronically shifted.

Since the New Process 273 is an electric shift transfer case it has a shift motor or an actuator which means it has a harness to supply electricity and information to the vehicles computer. It is possible for the connections to have moisture issues if submerged in water and should be checked for oxidation, rust and other related issues.

The front drive shaft is a common cause to a broken front case half. A worn cv joint in the drive shaft causes it to spin with a whipping action that can result the case to break. If repairing or maintaining the unit inspect the cv joint, mounts and cross member to make sure all are in good working order.

Although there are many similarities in this transfer cases differences do exist. If a case half needs to be ordered, locate the casting number in order to determine the correct part number. Bearing kits and seal kits are different for the Dodge (BK485A / TSK273D) and the Ford (BK485 / TSK273).

BMW NV125 Transfer Case Reman / Rebuilt Unit

The BMW X5 showed up around 1998 and has captured our interest ever since. It is a beautiful addition and a bold move from BMW at the time and since have added two smaller SUVs to the production line. But like any other mechanical equipment, maintenance is a part of life and every now and then there are break downs that need to be addressed.

From its release to 2002 and some 2003 the transfer case used was the NV125. The NV stands for New Venture or also referred to in the industry as New Process.

After many years of selling parts for this transfer case we know the chain is a part that should be replaced whenever you have to go into the unit. And there are three other parts that should also be replaced which are the chain snubber, the plastic washer and the plastic caged bearing. These are wear parts and always a good idea to replace while in the unit.

If you try to purchase any parts from the dealer they will tell you that you need to replace the complete transfer case or as it is known in other parts of the world, the transfer box.

But with Cobra you have options. You can rebuild it yourself or purchase a remanufactured one from us, either way you choose the best option for you.

Aisin Warner 55-50 SN Filter Differences

AW55-50SN and AW55-51SN is a 5 speed front wheel drive automatic transmission manufactured by Aisin Warner for Nissan, Volvo, Saturn and GM vehicles.

There are three different variation of filters for this unit.

The one for the Volvo and the Saturn does not have a rib (part no. A89010D) and the one for the Nissan has a rib (part no. A89010C. The Chevrolet Equinox uses a different one (part no. A89010E).

4R70W Accumulator Pistons

The Ford AODE and the 4R70W have a common issue with the 2-3 accumulator, they go bad.

To address this issue the accumulator now comes bonded. These parts will retrofit all the way back to 1980 covering the AOD, AODE, 4R70 and 4R75 series transmissions.

When replacing the 1-2 and the 2-3 accumulators in this unit here is what you need:

1-2 Accumulator Piston part number 76927B
1-2 Accumulator Cover part number 76929A
2-3 Accumulator Piston par number 76932EA

While in the unit most of my clients also change the the Low/Reverse Servo Piston and Cover.

For the low-reverse piston you will need to identify it by the amount of grooves at the end of the piston.

76912 has one groove.
76912A has two grooves
76912B has three grooves

76914 is the cover and works with any of the three pistons. So you will need one of the pistons (depending on the grooves) and one cover.

There are several options for the accumulator springs and are color coded. Once you have the color identified head over to our site and in the search box type 79926 to see the different springs.

Ford 6.9L Diesel T19 Kit Differences

Although the T19 Standard Transmission was used in several years and engine size this post will specifically cover the Ford F Series Pickup Truck from 1983 to 1987 equipped with the 6.9L Diesel engine.

This vehicle came with two variations of the T19, one with the 20mm wide input bearing and the other with the 23mm wide input bearing. In order to know you would need to take the unit apart.

In the event you are not sure or you don't want to take the unit apart until you have the kit here are the parts you will need to purchase in order to cover both possibilities.

1 x BK146WS - Bearing, Gasket, Seal and Synchro Kit
1 x 304240 - Bearing

This will insure you have the other bearing. In this instant you will have an extra bearing at the end of the build.

The bearing pictured below is the 23mm wide bearing part number 304240.

BMW X5 Driven Sprocket

On a previous post we spoke about the transfer cases that came in the BMW X5.

Much like the driven sprocket / front output shaft of the NV125 and the LWX500 used in earlier models of the X5, the ATC500 has a very similar sprocket.

It incorporates the driven sprocket and the front output shaft in a single piece. And much like the other two it looks very similar and can be replaced almost the same way.

The major difference between the earlier two cases (NV125 and LWX500) the ATC500 has s sprocket assembly and and an actuator which will make the unit a bit more complex but not by much.

The drive shaft used in the other two can also be used in the ATC-500 making good use of the longer splines.

We've seen a pick up in inquires and requests for ATC-500 parts. The most commonly ordered parts as of today are the actuator, chain, seal kit and the driven sprocket.

When replacing the driven sprocket its a good idea to replace the front drive shaft too. This will make for a better fitting of the two parts since they are new and the drive shaft has the longer splines.

4L60E Bonded Valve Body Separator Plate

From 1998 and up GM has introduced about 13 separator plated in the 4L60E, 4L65E and the 4L70E automatic transmissions. This makes it difficult to have them handy when you need one as a transmission mechanic and frustrating to order as a do it yourselfer.

Now we have a plate that fits 12 units with simple modifications to the plate. Part number K33599 can be modified by drilling or widening some of the holes on the plate.

For proper identification you will need to match the oe number and or the oe plate code to the drill pattern.

TH-180 Adjustable Modulator

As in most adjustable modulators this one replaces most of them made for a specific unit and you adjust it to your liking.

What exactly does this mean?

The modulator is adjusted for a harsher /
firmer shift or a softer shift. The one shown below and as an example is our part number 24160G (used in the Geo Trackers and the Suzuki Sidekick) and we will explain how it should be adjusted.

Look for the part of the modulator that is not threaded. You will see a small slot where you can turn it with a small flat screw driver.

Turn right for a higher shift or turn left for a lower shift.

This will not change the shift points. This will only change the shift quality. That is it will only make the shift harsher (firmer) or softer (less firm).

If this does not fix the issue you are trying to resolve like shifting points you will need to inspect the throttle valve cable as the culprit.

09A Aftermarket or Orgingal Solenoids?

I was on the phone with a customer today asking about the difference between the aftermarket and the original solenoids for the 09A/JF505E solenoids. The thing is this was not the first time this week this question came across my desk.

For the past few months this question has become more popular as the cheaper aftermarket solenoids come to market. Talking to a few of our clients that work on this unit they explain they tried the aftermarket solenoid with little success.

The main complaint is they fail quickly resulting in the vehicle coming back for warranty. This means the solenoids need to be replaced with original ones, which also means having to buy more oil (very expensive oil).

The difference in price between the AM and Original is not enough to justify taking the risk from what we keep hearing. This should be taking into consideration when replacing all the solenoids or just one.

ATC700 Transfer Case

The newest edition to the transfer case line for the BMW X5 is the ATC700. Also used in the X6, this transfer case is not very different from its predecessor the ATC500.

They both have a transfer case actuator or shift motor and sprocket assemblies with frictions and steels. Much like the ATC-500 and the NV125 it replaced the chain has a tendency of stretching. Once stretched you will hear a popping noise coming from under the vehicle when you hit the gas.

At this point you want to replace the chain asap. If left unfixed the drive and driven sprockets can go bad increasing the cost of the repair significantly.

TF80SC Valve Body

The TF-80SC is a 6 Speed automatic transmission for front wheel drive application manufactured by Aisin Warner. This transmission is used by different vehicles companies including Ford, Volvo, Saab, General Motors, Opel to name a few.

This unit is also known as the AF40-6, AM6, AW6A-EL, TF81-SC and AF21 depending on which vehicle manufacture is using it. For example the AF21 designation is used by Ford.

This unit is light and it is controlled electronically. Its also used in an all wheel drive version like the Volvo XC90. The TF80SC valve body is in constant use as it engages in and out its 6 speeds. When the vehicle is idling, the tcm automatically shifts the unit into neutral to reduce heat and conserve fuel. All this shifting eventually wears down the valve body and it's solenoids.

NP271 Input Shaft

As this years brutal winter keeps pounding the north east and mid west drive-trains will be heavily taxed. We have seen an increase interest in the New Process 271 and 273 T. Cases.

In this posting we will discuss the input shafts for the NP-271 and the NP-273 transfer cases.

Their are four different input shafts; 3 different versions for Ford and one for Dodge.

Here is a breakdown:

Some of the Fords this unit is found in are the Excursion and F-Series with the 5.4L and 7.3L Diesel. Dodge Ram 5.2L, 5.9L Diesel and the 8.0L 10 Cylinder.

Always count the spline to confirm the correct part number and avoid a delay in receiving your parts. As this years brutal winter keeps pounding the north east and mid west drive trains will be heavily taxed. We have seen an increase interest in the New Process 271 and 273 T. Cases.

CFT30 Reverse Planetary Gear

The CFT30 used in the Ford Five Hundred and Freestyle 3.0L from 2005-2007 and Ford Taurus, Mercury Sable 3.0L from 2004-2007 comes with an integrated reverse planetary gear with input shaft.

The reverse plant with shaft is a common issue in this unit and usually replaced as a result of part failure and or conjunction with a rebuild. The part is approximately 7.5 inches high and 6 7/8 at its widest. There are three sets of two planet gears for a total of six gears.

88896067 Valve

The GM differential shut of valve is known by many other names. For example:

> Oil flow check valve
> Differential clutch oil pump flow check valve
> Oil shut off valve

By which ever name you know it by the fact is they are going bad and are sought after. The valve looks like a real big solenoid with a metallic body, plastic mid section and a screen to top it off. This valve has a three pin electrical connection too.

BMW X5 Front Drive Shaft

We would like to start by wishing everyone a Happy New Year 2014!

To start the first day of the work year at Cobra we received a phone call from a new client wanting to purchase the drive line shaft for the BMW X5 equipped with the NV125 or the LWX500 Transfer Case or as its know in across the pond, Transfer Box.

He mentioned he purchased one that was re manufactured. What does this mean you ask? How do you remanufacturer a shaft? Well, what happens is they ask for your shaft back first or charge a core. Already with a few in stock, the company that is remanufacturing them will cut off the spline section and weld a new spline section. Sometimes the new spline section is the same size of the original but most of the time its the a bit longer (about an inch longer)

From the description the issue this client was having with the one he purchased appeared to be a bad weld. Its not the first time we've heard of this and of an unbalanced shaft. If the shaft is not properly balanced you can feel the vibration as a result at different speeds. Also consider there are various welds after the fact.

These are just some of the issues to consider when purchasing a the spline section or a remaned shaft. It does not mean they are all bad, just something to think about before making such an investment in time and money just to save a few dollars.

Cadillac SRX Transfer Case 4x4 Parts

At posting time we have all the parts listed on the site for transfer case used in the Cadillac SRX. The most common parts sold to date are the chain, bearing kit, drive & driven sprockets.

The bearing kit comes with the bearings, seals and the bushing as you can see in the picture below.

The tcase chain will stretch over time and will need to be replaced. The most common symptom is a knocking sound or a clacking noise when you take off from a dead stop. For example, you are at a stop light and when the light changes you speed up and the noise happens. The stretched chain is skipping over the sprockets. If not fixed the sprockets can wear down and as a result will need to be replaced too.

Getrag 290, NV-1500 and NV-2500 Shifter Assembly

There are several shifter assembly options for the Get Rag 290, New Venture 1500 and 2500 Standard Transmissions.

The Chevy S-10 pickup has its own version of the assembly which is not in the video below.

Dodge has a unique shifter as the shaft is square with a notch on the top of the shaft part number 404625D.

For Chevy and GMC there are two possible shifters. We receive questions on them all the time on how to differentiate them. When placed on a flat surface part number 404625 will sit flat and not move. 404625B, on the other hand, will not sit flat because the shifter ball extends out from the base of the tower.
