Why? Because she's such a lovebug. Because she's the best argument for adopting a rescue. Because she's a really low maintenance pet. Because she is the funnest reason for exercising. Because she is the key to the hearts of so many people. Because she's so patient with the babies, even when they're screaming at the top of their lungs. Because she's such a gentle creature that she hides under the bed when there's a thunderstorm going on (or when the German soccer team wins the World Cup and there are fireworks in the neighborhood). But there's a reason for my disappearance: our latest and biggest DIY project ever. Our adorable twin boys were born last month! Yeah! Major life change.<br /><br />During the pregnancy I crafted quite a bit, but never got around to photographing the progress or actually posting anything. I gotta warn you - most of the projects were baby-related, for example I sewed pants for the twinsies. But don't worry, this will not turn into a baby blog. Most of the projects can easily be adapted. I might show you some of the finished projects soon if I find time to photograph them. Hopefully I will also have time to create some new stuff, but I guess you know that changing dozens of diapers every day will keep your crafts limited to a minimum. <br /><br />Now that I spilled the beans, what's new with you guys? Spring, together with fall, is my favorite season because everything is new and bright and happy. You just can't not smile when the first beams of sun hit your face after weeks of grey and depressing weather. That's why I decided to share with you my top ten signs that spring is finally here. Yay!<br /><br />#9 The smell of spring flowers and warm wet soil.<br /><br />#8 The first mosquito will find its way into your home. Luckily, they are still a bit drowsy and weak, so you can kill them in no time. <br /><br />#7 When you get up on Saturday morning, you will inevitably find your neighbor working in the yard. And you will feel bad about the fact that you are still in your PJs while other people are already busy. <br /><br />#6 Walking the dog doesn't feel as much as a burden as it did in sleet and ice-cold winds. It even starts to feel like fun again!<br /><br />#5 Sneezes. The first days of spring come hand in hand with the first waves of pollen. But have you ever noticed how allergy sneezes sound different from cold sneezes? People with hayfever sneeze a bit like guinea pigs, if you ask me. (And I am allowed to say that because I am occasionally one of them.)<br /><br />#4 You look into your wardrobe and realize you have nothing to wear that goes with the weather. And those colors there, they are so last year!<br /><br />#3 The trees and the first flowers are in bloom. This week, I have spotted the first tulips in the neighborhood. And I am a sucker for those bright pink cherry trees!<br /><br />#2 The color green loses all its yuckiness and starts to look like something that might even find its way into my living room, maybe in the form of pillows or blankets.<br /><br />#1 Who let the dogs out? The most definite sign around here that spring is finally here is my beloved pal Coca. As soon as she stands in front of the French doors leading to the garden and starts to stare longingly into the sunshine, it is definitely spring! I mean, I totally understand that it is a great organizational tool and all, but just seeing those long lists written in ugly handwriting, using ballpoint pens and the scrappiest paper you could find, makes me not want to do anything. However, there's probably no way around To Do lists if you actually have a life.<br /><br />Solution? The cute To Do list board. It's pink, it's pretty, and you can write down your jobs using dry-erase marker. I must admit that I feel a bit like an old lady with her five cats when I am sitting there with my needle and embroidery yarn, but I like how serene and relaxing this activity is. Additionally, you can do it anywhere, which is really practical (and unlike many of my other crafts, it doesn't completely mess up the place...)<br /><br />There was a lot of alphabet art in the making, lots of initials for friends and family, but I didn't really take a lot of photos. Somehow I lost all my blogging motivation and disappeared off the face of the earth for some time, and I kinda blame it on wanting it all. In addition to all the balls we're trying to keep in the air at the same time, I wanted to have that cute little blog with lots of creative stuff and regular posts. Regular not as in once a month, but actually regularly a couple of times a week. And if you get too greedy, you end up not having anything at all, it seems. <br /><br />Why am I sharing that with you? Two reasons:<br /><br />1) I guess the same thing is true with New Year's resolutions. If you want too much too fast, you will end up getting nothing at all. Dieting, for example. Or starting to do sports. Take your time, girls.<br /><br />2) I really hope to start blogging again this year on my cute little blog with creative stuff and regular posts. But this time, regular as in a couple of times a month. I figure I rather post a couple of cute projects instead of a lot of not-so-swanky ones. You see, I still want it all, but I have realized that it must come one step at a time. It was the week before school was about to start again. Pencils, rulers, felt-tips, everything was there. And the first Christmas cookies. I was dumbfounded. Meeting friends and baking Christmas cookies together. Creating or finding a present that really shows someone that I care about them. Helping someone out buying a tree even though you are already busy. Taking a walk through the brightly lit neighborhoods. Seeing the bright eyes of kids at Christmas time. Toasting the season with dear friends.<br /><br />Today is the 1st December. So I need to come up with something cute for the table decorations. I found it on Daisy Mae Belle, and even though there will be no old screens available (after all, this is Germany, we don't need screens because our mositos are small and well-behaved), this might be doable!<br /><br />So many people are crazy about peppermint (I'm not, but that's okay), so creating something with candy canes should be on the list for Christmas. Here's a recipe for <a href="http://www.the36thavenue.com/2013/11/candy-cane-chocolate-loaves.html">candy cane chocolate loaf</a> (found at the 36th Avenue).<br /><br />When I came across these <a href="http://www.bakersroyale.com/pies-and-tarts/blueberry-steusel-pie/">mini blueberry streusel pies</a> on Bakers Royale, I was smitten. Streusel is German, in case anyone ever wondered. Anyway, this month's Craft Challenge is for Christmas. So I had to come up with something, right?<br /><br />Christmas in our home is a mix between traditional and whimsical. For example, I have all the classic Christmas ornaments from my grandma, but they share the tree with all kinds of adorable not-so-traditional ones: the Eiffel tower, turquoise toadstools, a silver pick-up truck... in a blue, white and silver extravaganza. That's why I decided to create some doxie Christmas ornaments this year.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-APIabrW-Gxs/UojXBUmjH1I/AAAAAAAAILE/AI2ZlnRxJnc/s1600/doxie_christmas_ornament_linky1.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="396" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-APIabrW-Gxs/UojXBUmjH1I/AAAAAAAAILE/AI2ZlnRxJnc/s400/doxie_christmas_ornament_linky1.png" width="400" /></a></div><br />First of all, you need some fabric in the color of your choice. Then you can either print out a doxie silhouette or you can draw one yourself. (For my first doxie, I stuffed the dog before this step. In Germany, almost all the kids get those 24 presents as a countdown to Christmas, and what's good for the kids, is good for us, too, right? So time to come up with some presents to put into the one I'm making for my sis. How cool is it? How cool is that?<br /><br />Anyhow, there are, of course, other things I liked:<br /><br />This <a href="http://ps-imadethis.tumblr.com/post/54443120140/make-your-mid-summer-nights-dreamier-with-a-gold">DIY gold feather headband</a> would be super cute for a holiday party, don't you think?<br /><br />I also love this <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/aurorabeadz/5946298751/">button heart embroidery</a> - if you have tons of buttons lying around (they are so expensive when you buy them in a shop). <br /><br />Speaking of buttons - isn't this <a href="http://themasonbee.blogspot.ru/2010/10/monochrome-mini-button-wall-clock.html">button clock</a> darling? I found it on Mason Bee. Can someone please make this for me (in pink or blue, preferably)?<br /><br />During our vacacation in the states, I loved red velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting because we don't have that in Germany. I'm still a bit befuddled by the fact that they have to be red. So, if you want to get your red velvet fix, why not try this <a href="http://une-deuxsenses.blogspot.com.au/2010/12/red-velvet-hot-cocoa-with-cream-cheese.html">red velvet hot cocoa</a> with cream cheese by Une - deux senses? (I might leave out the red food colorant, though.)<br /><br />As Christmas comes closer, people seem to be digging my <a href="http://cocalores.blogspot.de/2012/11/christmas-ornament-wreath-tutorial.html">Christmas ornament wreath</a>. Can't wait to put it back on the door. And hey, that severe glue gun burn from when I made it has almost disappeared! <br /><br />Lolly Jane's stuff is great. It is unusual for me not to have all of my gifts planned and a schedule of home-made gifts on the go. Having lost my craft stash to Germany&nbsp;in the house move, I am having to take advantage of my week in Germany to make my contribution to this month's challenge. It is so nice to think about Christmas a bit, although it has made me feel somewhat behind.</div><div sab="3661" style="text-align: left;"></div><div sab="3661" style="text-align: left;"><br />Before I share with you my idea for this month, it is time to announce the winners of the vote from October's Upcycle Craft. A few years ago, I bought my mum some wine charms, so that people did not get confused over whose drink belonged to whom. Now that I am so close to setting up my own home, I think it is vital that we make some for us. The champagne after the registry office last week was certainly a little bit of a Russian Roulette for whose you were actually sipping on. I figured even when not entertaining some festive wine charms would help to create a bit of Crimbo sparkle. The only thing I bought for this project was the florist wire for less than 2 euros.<br /></div></div><div sab="3661" style="text-align: left;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg568/CraftboticQ/November%20Craft%20Challenge%202013/MetalPinstage_zps4358c604.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://i1244.photobucket.com/albums/gg568/CraftboticQ/November%20Craft%20Challenge%202013/MetalPinstage_zps4358c604.jpg" /></a></div></div><div sab="3661" style="text-align: left;"><br /><div style="text-align: left;">To make the base of the charm, you need to construct a round base.&nbsp; I wrapped my wire around the top of a beer bottle. Turn one of the ends back to prevent what you thread on from jumping off. For my first charm, I experimented with different bead patterns. You can't beat a bit of candy-cane glamour. When I was finished, I just turned back the other end. Make a small loop of wire before attaching this to the charm base. To attach these it took a bit more work.&nbsp;I had to snip down the pointy ends with wire scissors and the loop took a bit more construction. When you are a festive party animal like myself (cough), you couldn't possibly be seen with the same set twice in one season! I had read a couple of books before and the information they contained about Washington didn't really excite me. It must be a tad different for US citizens as it is your own capital, but for me, it just didn't sound all that exciting. But it was on the route we were taking and it <i>is</i> the capital after all, so we had to go there, right? We arrived with low expectations and we really loved it there. It's a great city! Especially because it's, thanks to the national park service, an open-air museum, sometimes even one with a roof over your head.<br /><br />All of the Smithsonian museums are free. Of course, donations are welcome (and well-earned). Our favorite (and we visited a couple of museums) was the Air and Space Museum. Don't laugh, it really was, even though I am not that into air and space, but my husband is. We had an adorable gentleman as our volunteer guide, and he was so knowledgable and really took lots of time out of his day to show us around the most important exhibits of this museum. Seeing the exhibits is one thing, but hearing about everything from a person who knows what he's talking about was great. No guide book can replace that. <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vOHPugG01H0/UmQUUDj67pI/AAAAAAAAIJI/4aUOf_0xWPs/s1600/washington6.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-vOHPugG01H0/UmQUUDj67pI/AAAAAAAAIJI/4aUOf_0xWPs/s640/washington6.png" width="640" /></a></div><br />We also took a tour of the Capitol. It's free, too, you just have to register at the website. Very interesting! The place is completely crowded, as you can imagine, but you still get to see interesting things and the beautiful rotunda. A lot.<br /><br />And a piece of advice that will save you lots of money: You will not need a guided tour. You can walk from memorial to memorial and just catch the ranger talks. They're every hour, and they're great - and free! I learned so many new things, and that was not just because I'm German. I could have stayed more than the three days we had there because there are so many more things to see. For example, I didn't catch the National Archives to see the Declaration of Independence. But since we went to Philadelphia lateron, I got my share of information about the founding of the nation.<br /><br />Ever been to Washington DC? Unless it's raining, of course, which it does plenty. Soggy paths, dirty shoes, umbrellas that remain constantly wet...<br /><br />I'm particularly fond of Sunday mornings. Going on a long, long walk alone with the dog without meeting anyone because the whole wide world is still asleep is such a relaxing thing to do. Coming home to a quiet house, having a piping hot cup of coffee. That's the perfect way to start a Sunday.<br /><br />Coca loves fall too. Corn fields are the perfect place to sniff around, and we have plenty of them.
