If you are apprehensive about the "vocal improv" part of the evening, rest assured that there is NO requirement to sing, and you will enjoy the spontaneous music being made by others. You will not be alone. If you're up for a good sing though, there is no experience necessary - only a good attitude!
Location Description: The townhouses on the SE corner of 31st Ave and Edmonton Trail, right across from the Centex Gas station. Please park on 31st Ave NE (not 30th Ave) and come up the stairs by the garage doors.

There is no charge for this workshop, and it will be a chance to sing, play, connect, listen, grow and make music with other directors in the area. The invitation is to leaders or directors of all manners of chorus or choir - children's choirs, adult choirs, auditioned, non-auditioned, community, church, barbershop, chamber....  

This is a free workshop, however space is limited so Sue is requesting that you register. If there is enough interest she will add a second date.

This year, RDC if offering one band at Grade 3.5-5 concert band level. In addition to full band rehearsals under the direction of the guest conductor, Clinton Marshall, there are instrumental clinic sessions and a wine & cheese social. The finale is a concert presentation. Take advantage of top-notch professional instruction and make music with people from across Alberta!

The Event
Geared to Grade 3.5-4.5 players, the entire workshop (Friday evening and all day Saturday) will be held in full ensemble under the direction of our guest conductor, Colin Clarke.

After the Friday evening sight reading session, everyone is invited to the Communitea Café for a closed party featuring our own jazz jam. Our rhythm section will lay down the beat and all are welcome to join in or simply listen and socialize with friends.

Saturday rehearsals will run from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Coffee breaks (with delicious snacks) are provided and everyone goes out to find lunch at any of the terrific Canmore eateries. The workshop will conclude with an informal concert at 5:00pm. For those who are having too much fun to stop, we'll go out for supper together!

Registration
Register soon! A group block of hotel accommodations has been arranged for the workshop. A hot breakfast is included in the reservation and the hotel has a newly renovated pool with waterslide and hot tub. Simply indicate on the registration form that hotel accommodations are needed and you will be emailed the phone number and reservation code. (The group block is just held until February 9th, so register now and make your arrangements.)

Guest Conductor
Colin Clarke resides in Oakville, Ontario with his wife Laura. He is the founder and Artistic Director of the Toronto Youth Wind Orchestra, a project he began as a student in high school. This multi-award winning ensemble has earned a reputation nationwide as one of the leading performance ensembles of its kind in Canada, specializing in music from the traditional through to the newest works for wind band and made its Carnegie Hall debut in the spring of 2010.
A recent recipient of the Clifford Evans Award for Conducting, Colin’s credits include collaboration with groups such as the United States Air Force Band of Liberty in Boston, Massachusetts, the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, Ballet Jörgen, jazz vibraphonist Peter Appleyard, trumpet virtuosi Allan Vizzutti and Jens Lindemann, and the Canadian Brass.
Colin’s popularity as a conductor, clinician, adjudicator and composer/arranger has captured the attention of instrumental and choral ensembles, schools and music festivals all across Canada. He has conducted several all-city bands, orchestras and choirs across Ontario, and has led the Provincial Honour Bands of Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Prince Edward Island. In the spring of 2008 he served as conductor of the prestigious National Youth Band of Canada.

Previous guest conductors for the workshop have been Dr. Mark Hopkins (University of Calgary), Dr. Dale J. Lonis (Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra), Dr. Gillian Mackay (University of Toronto), Mr. Patrick Winters (Eastern Washington University), Mr. Clinton Marshall (South Carolina) and Mr. Gareth Jones (University of Calgary).

October 16, 1952 – September 23, 2011

Jill Harbicht, beloved wife of Stephen Harbicht of Calgary, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with amyloidosis and cancer at the Tom Baker Center on Friday, September 23, 2011 at the age of 58 years.

Jill was born on October 16, 1952 to Norm and Nora Harvey in Carberry, Manitoba. Throughout her childhood, the Harvey family called many places in Manitoba home. Jill married her husband Stephen in 1975 at the Rock Lake United Church Camp, Manitoba. For nineteen years Yellowknife, NWT was home to Jill, Steve, and her four wonderful kids; Kim, Laura, David, and Andrew. After retirement, Jill and Steve relocated to Calgary, Alberta and enjoyed much warmer winters. Jill lived a full and busy life, never wasting a moment. She devoted herself to her family and cherished her career as a Registered Nurse in Winnipeg and Yellowknife. Her life was balanced with music, church, volunteer pursuits, golf, and her many wonderful friends. Jill was a driven, loyal, strong, determined and honest person. To her husband, she was a beautiful companion, a loving friend, and a soul mate to the end. To her children, she was a great teacher, loving mother and an inspirational roll model. To her three beautiful grandchildren, she gave endless hugs and kisses and leaves them with wonderful memories they will cherish forever. She was generous, compassionate, caring, kind and a true friend to everyone she knew. We are blessed to have shared her life.
