Clean Cockatiel – How?

I have often wondered why my cockatiel always looks so clean and smells so good, unlike a pet dog who is the complete opposite.

Feathers are a big job, and if you look at birds in the wild they spend hours preening themselves to maintain their feathers. In fact, much of their day is spent pruning their feathers.

They literally comb their feathers with their beaks, so that each strand on the feather lies flat.

While doing this they also remove lice and other parasites from their bodies.

Most birds have oil-secreting glands at the base of their tails, and with their beaks, the oil gets spread all over their bodies.

This oil keeps their feathers in good condition and also waterproofs them.

Other types of birds, like a lot of the parrot family, rely on dust to keep their plumage clean.

This dust is called powder down and is produced naturally by the feathers.

When birds saturate of bathe themselves in water or cover themselves in dust, they are actively maintaining their plumage.

Birds of all types will enjoy splashing around in a bath for a few minutes. A wild bird will normally go and perch in a sunny spot and fluff its feathers to dry afterward.

So now you know why you have a clean cockatiel most of the time.

Give Your Birds A Spray Bath

My cockatiels, budgies, and parrots all love to be sprayed on a hot day.

I take a spray bottle, adjust it to its finest spray and let the mist fall over the birds.

Use a small plant sprayer bottle with a fine nozzle, which will create a mist of water droplets.

Fill the bottle with tepid water and be sure to move the seed out of the cage before starting to spray or it may become wet and moldy.

From the outset, you should accustom your bird to being sprayed. At first, he will be nervous, but he will quickly learn to enjoy a regular spray bath.

Wait until your cockatiel is perched quietly, then press the trigger several times aiming it just above the cockatiels head. In this way, it will feel like a shower rather than an onslaught of water.

Once your little parrot gets used to this, he will solicit a spray by lifting his wings, fluffing himself out or calling loudly.

Apart from washing their plumage, the water will also dampen down feather dust, which may otherwise be wafted into the air and can cause discomfort, especially to asthma sufferers. Cockatiels will produce more feather dust during a molt, so regular spraying at this stage can be useful.

When giving your cockatiel a spray bath, there is no need to drench him. A light covering of water droplets will be sufficient, or your bird might catch a chill.

There also isn’t any need to dry the clean cockatiel after spraying, and if you do this early on a warm day he will dry out naturally and you now have a clean cockatiel again.

Similarly you could purchase a bath for a clean cockatiel

Cockatiels normally enjoy splashing around in a bath, but make sure they are not placed in a draft when bathing.

There are all different types of bird baths available online, even ones with mirrors at the bottom to entice a reluctant cockatiel.

This bird bath is awesome as it is a playground as well as a bird bath.

Aloe Vera Spray provides a soothing refreshing moisture to the skin under the bird’s feathers and helps to keep natural oil glands open.

Keep Your Clean Cockatiel In A Clean Cage

When giving your cockatiel cage its weekly clean, make life easier for yourself by placing it in the shower, minus your cockatiel and its food. Run the hot water over it, and then give it a gentle scrub to remove any hard food stuck on the bars of the cage. Some steel wool or an old toothbrush should work well for this purpose.

Once the cage is clean, spray on some disinfectant that is available at your pet shop. Make sure that it is bird safe and follow the directions on the bottle.

Rinse again and let the cage dry thoroughly before replacing the food and your cockatiel. To dry wooden perches off quickly, place them in the warming drawer of your oven. Let them cool before placing them in the cage.

Poop-off is another great must have product to make cage cleaning easier.

Poop-Off Bird Poop Remover Sprayer, 32-Ounce

Removes droppings from all types of avian diets including Seed fruit nuts meat vegetables nectar bugs grains formulated diet and greens.

Removes even the toughest stains from clothing upholstery and carpets.

“I adopted a conure recently and the cage she came with was filthy! The white bars of the cage was covered in feces and food.

The bars were so caked that it looked yellow.

I took the cage into the bathtub and sprayed it down with Poop off and let sit for ten minutes. Next, rinsed the cage with hot water and it immediately looked brand new.

I also tried this product on my conures sand perches which were covered in waste. I sprayed poop off and let it sit for five minutes and rinsed it with hot water and gave it a little rub with my fingers and it looked so clean! If I had used a brush, it would have made the perch look brand new.”

So now you know the answers as to why in general you always have a clean cockatiel.

FlidRunest Bird Swing Mat with Wood Perch, Product Overview

The FlidRunest Bird Swing Mat combo brings together a wooden perch, a woven natural grass mat, and a lawn swing hammock setup, all designed with small parrots in mind.

You’ll often see it recommended for cockatiels, lovebirds, small parrots, conures, and similar birds. This lawn swing hammock design provides your feathered buddy with a spot to both relax and have fun. The mix of hardwood perch and grass mat means they get different surfaces to hop to, ways to swing, and bits to nibble, satisfying their need for both movement and curiosity.

The woven grass mat attracts many birds who love to explore new textures, while the natural wood perch helps keep their feet healthy and avoids the issues that come with plastic dowels. For owners looking for easy ways to add a bit of excitement and comfort to their bird’s cage, this set is a practical solution that won’t break the bank. It fits most cage styles and can be combined with other toys to keep your bird engaged day to day.

The Good & the Bad

The Good:

Offers enrichment and fights cage boredom

Doubles as a comfy nap spot for cockatiels or other small parrots

Uses natural, birdsafe materials most birds like to chew

Sturdy and easy to attach inside most cages

Simple design that fits almost all cage sizes and setups

The Bad:

Might be too small for bigger parrots

Active chewers may wear out the mat faster than expected

Not meant for outdoor use; made specifically for indoor cages

Some birds may ignore it if they’re picky about new accessories

Replacement mats are not always available separately

Is the FlidRunest Bird Swing Mat Good for Your Cockatiel?

This swing mat works especially well for cockatiels, mainly those that love to climb, swing, or just chill in new spots. Some may even say this is more of a hammock for birds.

Cockatiels are naturally drawn to different textures, and the grass mat gives them variety to chew, scratch, and relax on compared to plain wood or plastic perches. The wood perch included is less uniform than plastic ones, which helps keep your bird’s feet healthy over time.

If you have a timid bird, patience is key. Many owners find sprinkling some favorite treats or seeds on the mat helps spark interest. The swing’s gentle motion has a calming effect for most birds; however, it’s always smart to keep an eye on nervous or easily startled cockatiels the first few times they use it. If you notice unease, let your bird approach at its own pace and never force them to interact with the swing.

This set is especially useful for households with younger birds or cockatiels who need fresh toys to avoid getting bored. Because cockatiels are smart and easily bored, rotating toys and perches like this helps prevent negative behaviors. Plus, the addition of natural materials means you can feel good about letting your pet chew and play.

Tools, Setup & Cleaning

Setting up the FlidRunest Bird Swing Mat is straightforward. It comes with sturdy metal clips and hooks that you just clip onto the top or sides of your cage.

Make sure it’s placed where your cockatiel can easily get to it, but not so low that it’s touching droppings or leftover food. The mat and perch are lightweight, so repositioning them is simple if you’re reconfiguring your cage.

Cleaning is as easy as it gets. Wipe down or rinse off the grass mat and perch with water; make sure you let everything air dry fully before putting the swing back in the cage. Over time, keep an eye out for any frayed or chewed strands—if you see loose threads, replace the mat so your bird doesn’t swallow anything harmful. Routine cleaning goes a long way toward making the swing last longer and keeping your pet healthy.

Price Info

This swing mat typically costs around $19.99, and sometimes goes on sale for a few dollars less through popular online stores. The price includes the natural perch, woven mat, and the hanging swing—making it a solid deal compared to many single-use toys or perches. You’ll often bump up to free shipping if you add one or two more bird-related products to your order, so it’s worth checking out bundles or deals when shopping. One drawback is that replacement mats aren’t always available to buy on their own, so if your cockatiel is an especially energetic chewer, it may make sense to pick up an extra swing mat kit. Even so, the affordable price and multiple features make this a strong value buy in the bird toy market. Investing in cage enrichment like this can help prevent boredom-related issues and keep your bird feeling happy and active.

My Take on the FlidRunest Bird Swing Mat

This swing and hammock combo is a great way to make your cockatiel’s cage more inviting and less plain. Swing toys are top picks for parrots and cockatiels because they spark curiosity, provide physical exercise, and help fight off boredom. The woven mat is perfect for birds who love to nibble, and the wood perch does a good job at giving their feet a break from regular dowels. I’ve heard from bird owners whose pets were unsure at first but eventually got into this swing, especially when treats or favorite foods were scattered on top. Not every cockatiel will fall in love with a new toy overnight, so be patient and monitor your bird’s interaction. If you have a power-chewer, having a backup mat is a smart move, so your bird can keep playing without a gap in their routine. In terms of value and everyday usefulness, the FlidRunest swing mat checks a lot of boxes for bird lovers.

There are a lot of cockatiel toys on the market today, but most that I find are marketed for budgerigars. Most toys for budgies are more than suitable for cockatiels, even though a cockatiel is about three times the size of a budgie.

Before giving your cockatiel toys, check that they are robust and have no sharp projections on or inside the toy that could cause injury if exposed.

Remember that cockatiels love to chew, so make sure that the materials that the cockatiel toys are made from are non-toxic.

The simpler toys are normally best.

Cockatiels love things like mirrors and ladders.

They don’t enjoy swings as much as budgerigars do and would prefer another high perch to a swing. Although there are exceptions to this rule.

They might find some stimulation in pushing a ping pong ball around with their beaks. When it gets dirty, simply wipe with some paper towelling.

My cockatiels love to tear paper, which is very messy, but at least they are having fun.

If you are out a lot during the day, leave a radio turned on for companionship, especially if you only have one bird.

The next option is to get a second cockatiel for the company.

Cockatiels are gentle and sociable birds by nature, and although they may squabble, they rarely get into serious fights, unless you have two males with one female.

Two cockatiels of the same sex will also get on well, unlike larger parrots who can fight violently with each other.

I just did an article on what cocktails enjoy. Now let’s look at cockatiels and their dislikes, which isn’t a hell of a lot, but you should be aware of as a bird owner.

Cockatiels And Their Dislikes

Cockatiels might be small, but they’ve got some big opinions on what ticks them off. One major irritant is loud noises and sudden movements. These little guys have a strong fight-or-flight response, so any unexpected boom or flash can spook them badly. It’s like lighting a firecracker near a peaceful pond. Keeping a calm and stable environment helps them feel at ease.

Turning a blind eye to your cockatiel can be another mistake. These birds are social by nature and crave interaction. They hate being shunned like the forgotten toy in the corner. Regularly engaging with them through talking, singing, or simple ‘howdy-doos’ keeps them from feeling left out.

Their preference for well-lit areas is often overlooked. Cockatiels don’t just sit in dim corners. They thrive in natural light, reflecting their wild habitats. Darkness isn’t their friend, unless it’s bedtime. So while setting up your cockatiel’s abode, position it in a spot that gets good sunlight during the day without direct exposure that could overheat the little one.

One thing’s for sure, strong smells aren’t welcome. Cockatiels have sensitive respiratory systems, making them very vulnerable to fumes from things like candles, air fresheners, or smoke. It’s not just about being picky—these air pollutants can seriously harm their health. So, keeping the air clean and odor-free around their space is a must for their well-being.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

Feeding your cockatiel might seem like a no-brainer, but overdoing it can lead to an unbalanced diet and health problems. It’s important to provide a mix of seeds, pellets, and fresh veggies. Too many seeds can end up causing obesity and vitamin deficiencies, so keep their meals varied.

Cage space is another big deal. Tossing a cockatiel into a cramped cage is like asking you to live in a closet. They need room to flap around and plenty of toys to keep them entertained. Without these, boredom might set in, along with unhealthy behavioral habits.

Keeping a consistent routine is key. Cockatiels, much like us, appreciate knowing what comes next in their day. Erratic schedules can lead to stress, and a stressed bird is an unhappy one! Try to stick to regular feeding, playtimes, and bedtime.

Ignoring their mental needs is another mistake newbie owners might make. Cockatiels are intelligent creatures, and they need mental stimulation to keep them sharp and content. Puzzle toys and teaching them tricks can offer great brain exercise. Offering varied experiences helps keep them engaged and prevents depression.

Fostering a Happy Cockatiel

Creating a welcoming and safe space for your cockatiel is essential for building trust. This means making sure their cage is not just a holding cell, but a comfy and interactive home. Deck their space out with fun and safe toys, perches at different levels, and something soft yet sturdy to sleep on.

Interactive play is a surefire way to boost your bond with your feathered friend. Cockatiels love a good chat or song and respond to voice interaction pretty enthusiastically. You don’t need to be an opera singer or a comedian; just talking and singing can lighten their mood and strengthen your connection.

Introducing your bird to new experiences shouldn’t be rushed. Cockatiels need time to warm up to the unfamiliar. Whether it’s a new toy, food, or environment, go slow and at their pace, observing their reactions to ensure they’re comfortable.

Handling your bird is another opportunity to show some love. They enjoy being petted and gently talked to, but remember, every bird has its personal space preferences. Gauge their comfort level and never force interaction, aiming instead to be understanding and patient.

So hopefully now you are more familiar on cockatiels and their dislikes. Please feel free to comment below if you have anything else to add.

What do cockatiels enjoy most? I have always had cockatiels for as long as I can remember, and it is good to know what they enjoy doing so that you can keep them happy and entertained as pet owners.

What Do Cockatiels Enjoy Most?

Cockatiels are not just pretty faces with those charming crests and rosy cheeks. These guys are little bundles of joy and curiosity, always up for a play or a chat.

They’re inherently social creatures, and that plays a big part in what truly makes them tick. These birds thrive in environments where they feel part of the action. They love being involved and enjoy anything that piques their curiosity.

Keeping your cockatiel’s mind buzzing is just as crucial as keeping their tummies full. Interesting sounds, movements, or even changes around their environment can spark their interest.

Imagine a hyperactive toddler who wants to explore everything around them – that’s your cockatiel. Providing varied mental stimulations is a surefire way to see them happy and engaged.

Body language and vocal expressions are the keys to understanding these little fellows. When they’re content, cockatiels often show off with songs or whistles. A relaxed crest and playful chirps usually indicate they’re in a good space. Pay close attention to these subtle cues; they’ll tell you a lot about what they enjoy or what might be bothering them. Understanding these signs can help create a bond and ensure they live their best life.

Creating a Cockatiel-Friendly Environment

Creating a cockatiel-friendly environment is essential for a happy bird.

Cockatiels are like energetic housemates who thrive in the right setting. A spacious cage where they can stretch their wings, climb, and explore is where it all begins. It’s not just about the size, though; variety is key. Offering different perches made of wood, rope, and other materials keeps them entertained and also strengthens their feet.

These birds are big on social life. A cockatiel that’s isolated is not a happy cockatiel. They need interaction, whether it’s with other birds or their human family. Spend quality time chatting with them or letting them perch on your shoulder. Even a mirror in their cage can give them a sense of company when you’re not around.

Cockatiels are master tinkerers, always keen to mess around with something new. DIY toys can be your secret weapon. It doesn’t have to be fancy – some safe household items or homemade paper toys can work wonders. Creating a simple playground within their reach enhances their creativity and keeps boredom at bay.

Activities to Enrich Your Cockatiel’s Life

Interactive play is at the heart of enriching your cockatiel’s world. Simple games, like peekaboo or a gentle chase around their play area, can be both amusing and deeply satisfying for them. Cockatiels enjoy movement, so anything that gets them flapping happily is a hit.

Training sessions don’t just teach your cockatiel tricks, they also strengthen your bond. Start with simple commands and build up to more complex tasks as they get the hang of it. They’re pretty great at mimicking sounds, which comes in handy for teaching them to whistle tunes or even say a few words.

Foraging is a natural activity that taps into their instinct to search for food. Hide some treats in a puzzle feeder or scatter them in their play area to encourage this behavior. It turns snack time into an adventure and is a great way to stimulate their mind. Keeping it varied ensures they stay interested and engaged.

So hopefully that explains what cockatiels enjoy most.

If you have any sort of parrot, they will simply love to have a wall mounted entertainment center to entertain themselves with when they are outside of their cages.

Just as we enjoy our wall mounted entertainment centers like this one on the left, birds will similarly enjoy their own wall mounted entertainment center of a different kind.

Wall mounted entertainment centers are also great because they stop your feathered friend from chewing on your couches or wooden dining room chairs.

I bought one a few years ago when I first wrote this post, but now it is needing to be replaced and I couldn’t find it again on amazon. However there is still a whole array of activity centers that are focused around parrots.

How To Make Your Own Entertainment Center For Your Pet Bird

With a little thought and imagination, you could even try making your own bird gym for your little friend.

All you would need is wood, PVC, ropes, chains, and swings.

Because all parrots love to chew, a wood base would be the best.

You could use branches from parrot safe trees like apple, hickory or manzanita. Clean the wook well with a scrubbing brusy and non-toxic disinfectant to remove anything that may make your bird sick. Allow the wood to dry in the sun.

You could stand your branch in a pot plant pot or attach it to a base, as long as it is sturdy and won’t fall over when your bird is playing on it.

You can use PVC to make perches and ladders for your bird to play on. PVC is a little stronger than wood and will last when your bird chews on it. Try to find a pipe that is about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in diameter.

Try using a thick rope with knots tied in it every 12 to 24cm. Your bird will enjoy climbing up it. Chains can also be used, but don’t use large openings that your bird could put her whole foot or head through, or she may get stuck.

A bell is a great idea, as parrots love making a noise. Buy some at your pet shop to ensure that they are bird safe. You can attach with rope or chains.

Don’t forget to include a swing, as birds normally love swings. These can also be bought at your pet shop and attached to the branches or wood.

Please comment below if you have any idea where I can find a wall mounted entertainment center for my cockatiels.

As long as you don’t have addled eggs or dead-in-shell eggs, then you have a good possibility that the eggs will hatch if you keep incubating them, whether it be in an incubator or naturally.

Note that in colder weather, the eggs may take a day or two longer to hatch. If there is too much chilling or cooling of the eggs, that can result in dead-in-shell chicks.

Sometimes it comes as a pleasant surprise to find that there is one more chick in the nest than there were eggs.

These extra chicks come from one of the eggs having been double-yolked.

The chicks in these cases are not necessarily any smaller than the others, but if they are then it is likely that they will die.

If birds often lay these double-yolked eggs, it is best not to breed with these birds or birds that show any other reproductive disorder as most of these types of disorders are inherited.

How To Hatch An Egg

There are two methods how to hatch an egg. Either with parent birds or in an incubator.

Sometimes, some disaster or another will leave the breeder with some surplus eggs. If the eggs cannot be fostered off with another breeding pair, rather than destroy them, put them in an incubator. There are many different types of incubators available online from cheap to expensive, and you can click on the pictures below if you want to see a wide variety of incubators for sale at great prices.

If you need to incubate your eggs, it is obviously more convenient to have a group of chicks hatch together rather than one every other day. It is thus best to store the eggs until the clutch is complete before they are incubated.

Eggs must be stored in a cool place where the temperature is between 40 and 60 degrees and they must be turned at least once a day during their storage.

It can help to mark the eggs in some way with an indelible felt-tipped pen.

Put the date on them and details of the parents or whatever information you think you will need later.

Do not use a ballpoint pen as it will go straight into the eggshell.

Do not use a pencil if the eggs are to be placed underneath a bird, as the marks will rub off.

If you breed birds and find yourself having to incubate often, it will help to have a professional incubator or home incubator similar to the ones below.

The first one is rather pricey and more for the professional breeder.

Thermo Scientific Heratherm

Temperature stability of ± 0.2°C (measured at 37°C).

This is a smaller version if you only breed on a small scale.

The best artificial incubators are those in which the air is circulated by a fan and they have some form of humidity control.

Even better if the eggs can be mechanically turned as well, as they should be turned several times a day, and this can be easily forgotten in a humans’ busy day schedule, and this is not how to hatch an egg.

The temperature of the incubator should be set at 100 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees Celcius.

When the eggs are mechanically turned do not stop the rotating mechanism in the last two days of incubation, because it has been found that their hatchability will not be affected by the turning.

With the damp wick of the incubator reading 91 degrees Fahrenheit with 70 percent water vapor saturation, hatchability has been found to be as good as it would have been had the eggs been incubated by the best of parent birds.

Are Eggs Infertile?

It is a good idea to examine the eggs for fertility, whether they are in an incubator or under the parents, after about five or six days.

It is a waste of a bird’s time and energy to sit upon eggs that cannot hatch. In an incubator, such eggs can explode and contaminate chicks that hatch from other eggs with various potentially harmful organisms. Rotten eggs can be a very powerful source of spors of the mold Aspergillus.

If the eggs of a sitting cockatiel are infertile and both parents seem to be otherwise perfectly normal, the clutch can be replaced with fertile eggs if you have any from another pair.

These foster eggs must have been incubated for an equal or a longer time, otherwise, the birds will desert the clutch and start again if the eggs don’t hatch in time.

If a fertile pair has lost their eggs, they usually start to lay within less than two weeks, and sometimes in a little as four days.

If the infertile pair is allowed to lay again it is very likely that they will lay another clutch of useless eggs. This types of birds usually make excellent foster parents, rather than putting the eggs in an incubator.

How To Tell If An Egg Is Infertile

If you want to know how to hatch an egg, the first thing to know is that the egg will never hatch if it is infertile.

A freshly laid or an infertile egg, when held in the palm of the hand looks almost as if it were translucent.

When put between a source of light and the eye, it appears to be a diffused color.

After four or five days of incubation, the egg now looks to be a duller, almost grey-white.

It seems opaque and when held up to the light, it will cut out light and appear to be darker.

If the light source is strong and cannot get to the eye save through the egg, as can be done by fiting the egg into a slightly smaller hole in the top of a dark box inside which is a light bulb. You will then see a dark blog radiating red “spider’s legs,” whih is the growing embryo and its blood supply.

The only real way for the novice to become absolutely certain in his judgment of whether the egg is fertile or not is to make a regular practice of examining the eggs in the nest.

After a little while the novice will get used to knowing how to hatch an egg, and with a quick glance can give all the necessary information as to whether the egg is alive or not.

If there is ever any uncertainty, never break the egg to find out, as it is almost certain to contain a live chick.

Conclusion

If the eggs have not hatched after three weeks of artificial incubation, or 24 days after the last egg was laid with natural incubation, open just one and if this is a dud, then another and so on.

Never break all the eggs in one go. If a living chick is found stop breaking any more.

Dead chicks cannot move and there is no hemorrhage on opening.

The state of development of the live or dead chick inside its broken shell will give a very good idea of how much further time is needed to incubate the remainder of the clutch.

Please comment below if you have anything to add on how to hatch an egg, and I hope this information has helped in some way.

I am sure some of you are curious to know more about how does ovulation work in cockatiels, and in this article, we will look at this as well as problems that some female cockatiels have with ovulation and the breeding process.

How Does Ovulation Work

Problems with Ovulation

Before we look at how does ovulation work, lets look at some of the most common problems that the cockatiel hens face when breeding.

From time to time you may find you have a cockatiel hen that appears to be unable to ovulate. They begin the usual nesting process, but they spend day after day sitting in the nest but never actually lay an egg.

If and when they eventually lay an egg, it normally won’t hatch.

If one of these birds is given eggs that have been abandoned by another cockatiel, they will normally raise the resulting chicks as their own.

Sometimes these hens are just a little young in the first place and after raising foster chicks, the problem will normally clear itself up on its own.

The opposite sometimes also happens when a hen continues to produce egg after egg without ever finishing her clutch. Frequently such a hen does not brood. A cockatiel cannot physically cover so many eggs so most would not even hatch.

If this condition is not resolved, it often leads to the death of the hen as she has a constant drain on her body system as she lays too many eggs.

Try marking the first six eggs laid and they can be left in the nest. The ones laid after should be removed and stored or fostered. Then if the hen does become broody she can be set on fresh eggs.

If you notice your hen looking unwell, sitting with fluffed up plumage and seems to have diarrhea which pastes the feathers of her vent with sticky whiteness, she could have peritonitis and this is incurable.

This happens mainly with hens that are too young or are diseased.

If the hen lacks vitamin D or hasn’t had enough calcium-rich food during or before laying, she will be unable to deposit calcium carbonate to make the normal eggshell.

The hen will then either lay a soft-shelled egg or if the calcium salts in the blood become depleted, show symptoms known as egg binding.

Egg Binding means that the egg is stopped in its passage down the oviduct, as the oviduct becomes paralyzed when the levels of blood calcium fall, so the egg can move no farther.

The egg bound hen becomes increasingly shocked and leaves her nest, becomes indifferent to disturbance and sits huddles in a sleeping posture. She will normally die if not treated in time.

The normal standard of treating egg binding is warmth. This works by reducing the effects of shock.

Putting liquid paraffin or other oils into one end of the bird or the other as some believe is good, will make the bird more ill, even if it does not have that bad an effect. The oil cannot possibly get into the oviduct where it is supposed to lubricate the egg and send it moving once again.

Egg binding is something that shouldn’t happen, as it is preventable, however, should it happen a one-milliliter injection of 30% calcium borogluconate giving under the skin of the neck and then spread by massage will usually be effective within about a half hour.

Calcium can only get transported about the body with sufficient levels of vitamin D. Therefore even if such things as cuttlebone are fed and the hen has a shortage of this vitamin, she will not be able to absorb enough calcium for her requirements.

In summer it is better to breed as the bird can normally make enough vitamin D for itself, but in the colder regions, birds will need a vitamin D supplement before attempting breeding.

Ovulation Happens How?

To understand the afflictions of some of these hens, it is necessary to find out exactly how does ovulation work and how exactly the egg is formed.

Obviously, with certain exceptions, most hens have a single ovary and oviduct situated in the left side of the abdomen.

About the time that the hen first starts to accept the attention of the male cockatiel, her ovary begins to enlarge with developing ovarian ‘yolks.’ The ovum of a bird when compared to that of a mammal, is relatively huge and we all recognize it as the yolk of the egg.

Within the ovary of the hen cockatiel, each yolk of the intended clutch is already present, but each will be at a different stage of development just before she starts laying.

The yolk of the egg is particularly rich in fat. If a hen is short of rich food, perhaps because she has to share her meals with the parasites in her intestines, or because she has an inadequate diet, then she will only grow a few yolks or perhaps none at all.

Now let’s look at how does ovulation work.

Two days before she lays her first egg, a mature ovum is shed from the ovary and is immediately fertilized by the sperm stored in the oviduct.

Most of the matings that take place between the cockatiels are sterile for there is no exchange of semen. But the proportion of the fertile matings rapidly increases toward the time of egg-laying so that the female comes to have sperm always present in her oviduct.

The sperm of parrots, once inside the oviduct are long-lived in comparison to other mammals. If the male is taken away, the hen cockatiel would very likely be able to lay fully fertile eggs for about a week. In some cases, it would take more than a month before the hen would be unable to lay any more fertile eggs.

The fertilized egg now travels down the oviduct where it has first secreted about it an elastic twisted structure called a ‘chalaza’ of thicker egg white or albumen.

The chalaza supports the yolk inside the egg so that the developing chick, located as it is upon the very top of the yolk, is always upward, at the warmest point of incubation just under the body of the hen.

No matter how the egg is turned, it will always float to the top.

The egg white is then added to surround and embed the chalaza and finally a membrane. The very last part of the oviduct contains the shell glands which deposit calcium carbonate (chalk) in a layer around the shell membrane to form the eggshell.

It takes about a day for the ovum to get to the shell gland area and another day for the shell to form.

The egg is then laid. Just before laying another yolk enters the oviduct to start on the same journey.

Many of the problems that people encounter when it comes to breeding cockatiels are, not surprisingly, based on nutrition.

Before a chick can hatch from an egg, the egg has to contain enough fats, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals to make the chick.

As the chick grows, eventually becoming independent of its parents, the chick will demand even greater amounts of these nutrients.

Now if the parents are fed a diet of only seed and water, it will be extremely difficult for them to raise a brood.

If you look at their usual fare of a seed based diet, you will see that this diet is deficient in several essential items, including amino acid lysine, vitamins A, D, B-two, and B-twelve, as well as minerals like calcium and sodium.

Nevertheless, despite these inadequacies, it is a common experience that certain pairs and especially older birds will sometimes lay eggs and raise their chicks on this simple seed fare.

This is a miracle in most cases that these breeding cockatiels do what they do, and they manage because although the diet is poor, the needs of a non-breeding cockatiel unless it is molting or suffering from a disease are even more frugal.

Thus, before breeding, they can lay down some of their body reserves with a certain amount of these essential dietary factors in anticipation.

Nevertheless, it does tax these breeding cockatiels enormously to raise a clutch, as the rate of withdrawal from their bodies of the substances that are deficient in the seed can so easily exceed their availability.

The body’s stored reserves may become so depleted that the parent cockatiel is unable to withdraw further amounts except by drawing on its own body tissues and thus damage itself.

Protein and many of the minerals cannon be stored except as function parts of the body and a loss in these results in the wasting away, debilitation, inability to molt correctly and the resistance to disease processes are greatly reduced.

The parents can become very lackadaisical about their brood and the frequently stop all reproductive behavior as they become listless.

The loss to the parents of these substances results because every time that they regurgitate food from their crops to feed the chicks, it is sticky with saliva and digestive secretions.

These substances are, compared with the grains of seed, proportionately rich in protein, minerals, and vitamins.

This is why green food, water soluble vitamins and mineral supplements, and best of all bread dipped in milk ought to be given to all pairs of breeding cockatiels, together with cuttlebone to replace the constant leaching of the body supplies.

Taming Your Cockatiel

Taming your cockatiel does take some patience. With a bit of patience and time, it is very doable, especially if the cockatiel is young.

The first step to building a trusting relationship with your cockatiel is getting him to be comfortable around you.

Start by giving him some warning before approaching his cage or try calling his name when entering the room.

At first, you will need to move slowly around your pet until he learns to relax around you.

Once he is comfortable having you in the same room as him, you can then slowly start taming your cockatiel.

Place your hand inside the cage with him and gradually coax him onto your finger. At first your bird will flutter away from you, but if you continue doing this on a daily basis, he will learn to share his space with your hand.

Once your bird is comfortably settled on your hand, you can try slowly removing him from his cage. Make sure his wings are clipped before taking him out. Never cut his tail feathers.

When your cockatiel is comfortable with you, you can coax him to step up onto your fingers.

Gently nudge his chest with an outstretched finger and say the word ‘up’ when he climbs onto your finger and ‘down’ when you place him elsewhere so he learns the associated words and learns to follow your commands.

This will come in handy when you want to put him down for the night or back into his cage.

Keep your training sessions to about fifteen minutes long, as cockatiels don’t have a long attention span. Make each session fun for you and your cockatiel.

Once your cockatiel is comfortable with you, you can experiment with scratching him and petting him. Most cockatiels love to have their heads scratched, and lots of them under their wings, or low on their backs just above their tails where their preening glands are situated.

You will know what your cockatiel likes, as he will relax totally and ask for more or grind his beak.

Here are some more great ideas for taming your cockatiel.
