Surf Sister’s goal is not to exclude men from our lessons, rather it’s to make sure that women feel included when trying surfing in Tofino for the first time.

Surf Sister introduces women and men of all ages and abilities to the sport of surfing in a safe, fun, and supportive environment, and offers advanced technique classes too. We learn and play on beautiful beaches near Tofino, British Columbia, rated as some of the most spectacular in the world.

When Surf Sister started in 1999 it was just a couple girls, a cell phone and a truck. Since then they’ve expanded to having their own Surf Sister Surf Shop, clothing brand, coffee bar and 25 summer time staff! Another fun fact about Surf Sisters, is that every January the Girls shut the shop and go on an annual staff trip to a tropical surf destination of choice. To date they’ve been to Hawaii, Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and most recently Indonesia.

Teaching full-time since 2006, Dawn has completed over 1,000 hours of trainings and continues to sit regular meditation retreats. Her style of teaching has evolved into a playful and dynamic vinyasa approach that also incorporates her experience in Mindfulness Meditation. Her journey towards personal growth has evolved into an overall vision to share, to connect, and to create community.

In 2007, she began organizing annual fundraisers to bring together, as well as to benefit, the community. After five years the initiative turned into a non-profit organization called Yoga Mala Foundation that funds yoga teachers to start on-going yoga programs in areas of need. She is also the owner of Passport to Prana Montreal, North America’s first multi-studio card.

We called this cocktail the “L-train” and it made like this:

• Shake up 2oz of vanilla bean infused white rum with 3 basil leaves, a splash of lime, a splash of simple syrup, and ice
• Pour in a glass and fill up with coconut water to the top
• Done

It was a great experience to compete in such a high calibre event in front of the huge crowds in Whistler. In the Big Hip contest I saved my best run for last and landed a clean frontside 5 while clearing the entire hip. Despite it being nearly impossible to see the jumps in the Slopestyle, I landed some solid tricks and ended up with a personal best result in a 5 Star TTR Slopestyle! It was a great way to cap off my competitive season.
