On this website you will find useful information about different types of cod fishing. Equipment, methods, techniques and fishing spots are some of the topics you will find tips on. If you have access to saltwater, you should definitely try out this rewarding leisure activity. In most areas it is possible to engage in cod fishing throughout the year. To fish from boats has often proven to be effective, but you can also get great catches from the shore. The coastline with its beaches, rocky shores, reefs and piers provide endless opportunities.

Equipment
Your choice of equipment is important. During cod fishing your equipment should both help you to get the fish to bite, as well as get it safely ashore. What types of cod fishing you engaged in, as well as how big fishes you are chasing, will determine the requirements that are set on your equipment. Rods, reels, lines, lures, jigs and bait are some of the equipment you can read about. How to fish for cod
As mentioned, cod fishing is conducted from both boat and the shoreline. There are many methods and techniques that can provide good catches and many of these methods are relatively easy to learn. Cod fishing should be fun and therefore we recommend that you choose a method that you will enjoy. Local conditions, the size of the fish, as well as what type of equipment you have available are factors that will affect which method you should choose.

Jigging is probably the method that is easiest to learn, but also bait fishing from boats is something that everyone can participate in. During shore angling for cod the conditions can provide some additional challenges, but do not be put off. With some basic knowledge and a little practice you will be able to enjoy cod fishing from shore. Here are some articles that hopefully will provide useful information.
In most areas you will be able to enjoy cod fishing all year round, as well as around the clock. However, there are some periods of time that are particularly suitable for cod fishing. Seasons will affect the opportunities for good catches, and also which method that should be used. Depending on local conditions, the time of day can also play an important role. The tidal water is in many areas the most important factor when you are looking for cod. In these articles you will find useful information.
In addition to some exciting fishing, mackerel is a great fish for food and also a great bait to use for cod fishing.

Sport fishing for mackerel is as you may know time limited. First and foremost this is a summer activity and in my local areas mackerel can normally be found from April and throughout October. Normally the best sport fishing will take place during the summer months and in September. Notice that these periods can vary depending on where you are located and it is the water temperature that mainly determines where you will find mackerel. My local area where these examples are taken from is along the South-west coast of Norway, close to the North Sea.

Mackerel is a rather small fish and normally a 2 pounds fish will be great catch. Despite a rather modest size, this is a sport fishing that gives a really exciting experience, provided you use the right equipment. This is because mackerel is exceptionally strong for its size and this is probably why this is such a popular leisure activity.

Using the correct fishing equipment means, in this context to use light equipment. In order to experience the strength of the mackerel a small spin fishing rod is a good choice. Often you will be able to use equipment that you have required for other types of sport fishing from shore. For example you could use equipment in the same size as when sport fishing for trout, or slightly larger. Large beach casting rods or heavy deep sea rods will take the joy out of sport fishing for mackerel.

If you try this sport fishing from a boat, a rod intended for trout will, however probably be too fragile. This because you often will catch other species during mackerel fishing and coalfish, cod and others puts other demands on the equipment. A rod intended for salmon fishing could therefore be the perfect choice.

The challenge of fishing for mackerel is normally finding the fish and especially in the early season it can be hard to locate. Trolling will then be a good method, but it can also be effective to let the boat drift freely with the tide and/or the wind. Remember to fish at all depths, since mackerel can be found at almost any depth. It can for example be found just a few meters below the surface, even at deep waters. When you are looking for mackerel in the early season, areas facing the open sea will be normally provide the best opportunities for success.

When you have located mackerel, you will often find that it is quite easy to catch. In fact mackerel will normally bite on most lures. This means that you can use lures, spoons, jigs and others that you already have in your tackle box. Although mackerel normally is easy to catch, you may experience that it want bite at all. It can be frustrating to see the fish close to the surface and still not get it to bite. Normally a little patience is then all it takes, as it will start biting as soon as it moves a few meters towards the bottom. This is when fishing from boat. When you try this sport fishing from shore, large shoals close to the surface could mean some fantastic catches.

Mainly, I think this is all you need to know about sport fishing for mackerel. Because of its willingness to bite on almost anything, there is no need for a lot of tips on this topic. Try sport fishing from shore or from boat and you will most likely succeed in catching this impressing fish. Remember that mackerel can be found at most depths and that light equipment is recommended for the best possible experience.

You can engage in this leisure activity all year round, and you can catch many different species. If you are looking for the really big fish, deep-sea fishing is definitely the way to go. Cod fishing at deep waters are one of many good opportunities.

As mentioned you can engage in deep sea fishing all year round, but always be aware of wind and weather conditions. A boat with the opportunity for a little shelter is preferred during autumn and winter, but there is nothing in the way of conducting deep sea fishing from a small, open boat. A powerful engine is then a great advantage. It allows you to quickly get back if it the wind picks up.

You can also choose to join an organized deep sea charter. Then you do not have to worry about the boat and how to locate best fishing spots. Also you will be able to pick up tips and advice from other fishermen. This gives you a great opportunity to gain experience and knowledge of this sport fishing. I would still argue that there is something special about using your own boat. Then you have to make all the decisions, and you must locate the fish yourself. This provides an extra good feeling when the big fish finally strike.

Equipment
Deep sea fishing places relatively large demands on the equipment. First and foremost you need a solid rod. Stiff rods are well suited for jigging while more flexible rods are well suited for bait fishing. If you plan to go deep sea fishing often, you should consider acquiring two rods, but there are a lot of good all-round rods available. You also need a high quality reel and a solid line to help you fight the biggest fishes.

General
The purpose of deep sea fishing is usually not to catch a lot of fish. The goal and dream is to catch the big ones. A cod weighing 20kg or a coalfish weighing 10kg is for many anglers the big dream. Halibut can reach a weight of more than 200kg and this is a dream for many fishermen.

Deep sea fishing is usually synonymous with bottom fishing. Bait is thus an important and useful factor, but it is not necessary. Jigging is also an effective method. A combination where you attach bait on your pirk is a popular method that has proven to be successful. Which species you are looking for will determine which method you should choose. Depth, wind, current and water temperature, should also be considered before you choose method, bait, and tackle.

Coalfish
Deep sea fishing for coalfish is one of my favorites and this is definitely fascinating, as well as a popular sport fishing. Coalfish, also known as saithe, is a very strong and muscular fish that is often compared to salmon. In most areas it can be caught all year round on depths ranging from 0 -300 meters. Coalfish will usually bite on most of your tackle and this is in other words not the biggest challenge. The challenge is normally to locate big coalfish. Try different fishing spots and always remember to fish at all depths. More on Sport fishing for Coalfish.

Many fishermen have experienced that they catch coalfish during cod fishing, and this is quite normal. This species often moves and feed in the same areas, especially at deep waters. Deep sea fishing for cod is off course also a very popular leisure activity and on this blog you will find a lot of articles providing cod fishing tips.

Deep sea fishing is an incredibly fascinating leisure activity. There is great variation in conditions, catches and methods. Some equipment and knowledge is necessary, but chartered trips give everyone the opportunity to try this sport fishing.
Cod Fishing Spots
One of the major challenges is locating the fish, something that also applies when you are using a boat. Here are some tips that should enable you to find some great cod fishing spots. In all sea and coastal areas where cod is present, you will be able to engage in cod fishing almost everywhere. Cod is present at many different depths, and you will find it both close to shore as well as far out to sea. Still some areas stand out as especially well suited. To locate such grounds, a depth sonar will be of great assistance, especially if you lack local knowledge. Bait Fishing for Cod
Bait fishing offers excellent opportunities, but also a few challenges. Which bait to use will be an important choice that should be influenced by several surrounding factors. There are many types of bait that have proven suitable for cod. When selecting bait you have to, among other things, take into account what's available at the present time of year. You must also decide whether to buy bait or find it yourselves. Some types of bait will be easily found, while other types will often require you to put down a lot of work. The simplest way is of course to buy bait from a tackle shop. The quality will, however, often be questionable when buying live bait. The vast majority will be able to provide their own bait, something that is recommended.
Wreck Fishing for Cod
Wreck fishing is in many areas recognized as the best and also most popular form of cod fishing. Great catches, including large individuals are often caught close by wrecks, and many a fishermen have set their personal fishing records at such fishing spots. This type of cod fishing requires some knowledge, which we will offer on this website. There are two main approaches to wreck fishing. Either you fish from a boat that is anchored or you fish from a boat drifting freely.
Jigging for Cod
Cod fishing from boats is often done by letting the boat drift freely. This means that the weather and tides will control its direction and speed. Placing the boat properly in relation to which way it is moving will be essential. Let's say that the tide is moving the boat toward the north. The boat should then be positioned on the south side of the actual fishing spot. By doing so, the boat will be brought across the ground and thus allowing you some efficient jigging. Once you've drifted past this spot, you should move the boat back to where you started. Cod fishing from boats, you can practically engage in at any given time. In most areas you will be able to fish all year round, as well as around the clock. However, there are some periods of time that are particularly suitable for cod fishing. The best period for this leisure activity is from early October until April throughout. However, you can experience great catches even during the rest of the year. Many fishermen complain about small catches during the summer, something that is often caused by the fact that cod moves into other areas.
You will find tips both for sport fishing in salt, as well as sport fishing in fresh water. You will also find some general tips that apply to for most forms of sport fishing, such as Trout and Cod Fishing.

Fortunately, sport fishing is not an exact science and there are countless ways that make it possible to catch fish. These tips that are made on the basis of personal experience and on the basis of literature on sport fishing and most are generally recognized. However, do not be afraid to try your own ideas and methods. Getting ideas from others is all well and good, but nothing beats the feeling of catching big fish using a new and self-made method. Remember that this first and foremost should be fun. Therefore, choose methods and follow sport fishing tips that you will enjoy.

Sport Fishing Tips

Patience is probably a somewhat boring tips, but most forms of sport fishing require this. Use the appropriate time so that you fish an area properly. Do not give up if your first attempt fail, but go on to fish the area again using different tackle.

Variety is a sport fishing tip that many anglers fail to follow. It is easy to get stuck in the old habits and use the same tackle time after time. Vary the choice of lures, spinners, flies, jigs and other equipment. Try different colors, shapes and varieties. Do not be afraid to try new methods for your sport fishing.

Choose well-suited equipment. It will allow you to present your tackle to the fish during different conditions, as well as help you get it safely on shore. Remember that rod, reel and line should be adapted to each other.

Saltwater Sport Fishing Tips

In the summer, cod often seek cooler water. Try cod fishing offshore or in deeper water in the fjords. This has given many good catches in the middle of summer.

Many species hunt smaller prey fish, and this opens the possibilities for some good catches. In areas where small coalfish, herring, etc. are gathered, you will often find big fish and such areas are well suited for cod fishing, as well as other forms of sport fishing.

Try attaching bait on the end of the pirk, jig or lure. Shrimp and mackerel are excellent bait that can turn your luck. This is a sport fishing tip that apply both when fishing from boats and from shore.

I most areas sea trout can be caught from shore all year round. A little patience is required, but often you will also catch other species during this sport fishing. Notice that looking for sea trout during the winter, in my opinion is an underrated leisure activity.

Do not be afraid to lose some tackle. Especially during cod fishing and one must expect to lose some gear because it gets stuck in the seabed. It is completely natural and if you never have contact with the bottom during cod fishing, it means that your lure is moving too high in the water.

If you are inexperienced, lack local knowledge or enjoy the company of your family this will be a good sport fishing tip. Let the boat drift freely with the wind and currents at depths ranging from 30 to 80 meters. Use jigs (pirk) and suspension and release your tackle until it hits the seabed. Then try jigging a couple of minutes before you reel in some while you make some jigging movements. This will let you fish effectively for different species like cod, coalfish and mackerel.

There are always quit good opportunities to catch fish in saltwater. Our main tip is therefore to try sport fishing whenever you want. Whatever the conditions are, it is possible to get some nice catches and exciting experiences.

Freshwater Sport Fishing Tips

An important tip is to customize your sport fishing to current conditions. Sport fishing in a clear and small river requires different methods than angling in a large river. The most important thing is to choose a method and equipment that makes it possible to present the bait, lures, flies and similar to the fish.

Trout fishing in a small mountain lake often offers bright and clear conditions. Then it is important to move as silent and careful as possible. Flies or small spinners can be effective during such conditions, but remember that variety is important.

During Sport fishing for salmon the water flow is very important. A small increase in water flow often means that “fresh” fish move up the river. During such conditions there are good opportunities to catch salmon. An important tip is to adapt the methods and equipment to the water level.

Do not be afraid to try new methods, or to try out your own ideas. Creativity and variation is a sport fishing tips that always will be helpful.

Even the most inexperienced fisherman can try on cod fishing and even if you do not succeed at the first attempt, there are many other species that can bite. Pollack and Coalfish are among others common catches while. Cod fishing is like many other forms of shore angling. It's about skill, experience, knowledge and a little luck. Below you will find articles that hopefully will give you the knowledge you need in order to succeed.

Cod Fishing Spots
When you are cod fishing from the shore, the biggest challenge will often be to locate the fish. It may be a good idea to seek information from local fishermen, but some basic knowledge will to a large extent enable you to find the best fishing spots.

The conditions along the seabed are usually the most important factor when choosing cod fishing spots. This fsih will often stay in places with rough bottom conditions, mainly because it will find food and protection in such areas. Therefore you should seek fishing spots with such bottom conditions when you are cod fishing from the shore. Deep crevices, seaweeds/kelp, steep subsea hillsides, as well as a rocky seabed will provide suitable conditions for cod fishing. Cod fishing from the shore is for many anglers synonymous with bait fishing. Although there are other excellent alternatives available, bait fishing definitely provide some great opportunities for successful cod fishing. The ability to choose the most appropriate bait will often be crucial for your opportunities during shore angling. First and foremost, you should choose bait that cod will naturally feed on in the relevant area. Be aware that this may vary depending on seasons. Cod Fishing - Best Time
In most areas there will actually be good opportunities for cod fishing throughout the year. Some fishermen may claim that they only catch cod at certain times of the year, this is incorrect. Often such opinions are caused by lack of knowledge on cod fishing. But although you can get good catches throughout the year, you will usually experience the best cod fishing from late September to April, throughout. Tides will often affect the conditions for cod fishing, and is thus a factor that should be taken into account. Local conditions are extremely crucial, and it is therefore difficult to give any general advice. Shore Angling - Casting
Casting will always be an important part of cod fishing from the shore. If you can`t cast your bait or lure into the area where cod are located, it will of course be difficult to catch fish. What requirements are set on casting abilities is primarily determined be whether you are using lures or bait, as well as of how far out at sea cod is present. Bait fishing for cod will often take place at sandy beaches as well as at other areas with shallow water. At such fishing spots the fish will often be located a bit from the shore, meaning that you must be able to perform long distance casting. In this article we look at sport fishing for salmon.

To outsiders, salmon fishing may seem like a great test of patience. You spend hours on hours in the river and yet it can take days and even weeks before the fish finally bites. However, for most anglers, this sport fishing is about more than the catch. The excitement when the fish finally bites, fantastic scenery, as well as the challenge itself are some of the factors that are making this sport fishing so fascinating.

Salmon fishing puts relatively high demands on your gear. If you are lucky enough to get a nice salmon on the hook, you will find that the challenge has barely begun. There is great demand on both fishermen and gear while fighting and landing salmon.

Conditions
Season, temperature, time of day, as well as the flow in the river is factors that greatly affect your opportunities and choices during this sport fishing. When the water level in the river rises, you will often find that catches can be considerably better. The salmon that have gathered outside the river mouth will start moving up the river, and this salmon is often easier to catch than the one that has been in the river for a long time. Rise of new fish also means that there is turmoil and change for the salmon that is already there. Many of these fish will move further up river. In the lower parts of a salmon river, you will also experience some of this flooding effect caused by the tides.

Low flow and high temperature in the water means big challenges for an angler, and you will rarely experience the rise of new fish under such conditions. Then sport fishing requires both patience and ingenuity. Try to vary the color and shape of your lures or flies. During river fishing under such conditions, the sun and clear weather causes an additional challenge. You should then limit sport fishing to the time of day where the sun does not light up the river. Salmon fishing around sunrise and sunset will usually provide the best opportunities for sport fishing in a small, clear river.

Spinners and Lures
Sport fishing using spinner or lures is a common way of catching salmon. When using a spinner you have to options. You can throw the spinner upstream and reel it in, following the stream. The spinner will then sink relatively deeply into the river, where it will fish effectively. You can also throw across the river, possibly a bit downstream. Be aware of the spinner's features. If you reel the spinner following the flow, you should use a spinner that is designed for such purpose.

A lure can be thrown across the stream, such as traditional spinners. During low water levels, salmon will often respond if you throw the lure a little downstream. Under favorable conditions, you should also try to throw the lure upstream. Generally speaking, suitable spoons will be the best choice in a quiet river with low flow because the contact surface is an important factor. If you are lucky enough to experience sport fishing for salmon during high water levels, a relatively heavy and slim lure usually will provide best results. But remember, no rule without exceptions.

Using bait
Using worms has long been a popular method of sport fishing. A skilled angler will often be able to catch more salmon than the best fly fishermen, while performance and technique can be equally impressive. Unfortunately, the use of worms is strongly regulated in many rivers, so you must always check the local rules and regulations before you start sport fishing using such bait.

If you drop a worm into the river it will flow almost weightless with the flow. During salmon fishing your goal should be to imitate such a natural situation. In other words, you should lead the bait downstream with natural movements. The worm can also be placed directly in front of the salmon in an unnatural way. Repeat this over and over again, often salmon will bite in sheer irritation.

There is a reason why the salmon is called the king of the river. It is an unusually strong fish that will offer you a real fight after you hooked it. When you fight a salmon, it is important to always be aware. Keep your fishing line tight at all times, and always be aware that the brake is properly adjusted. A reel with a smooth and good brake is also important during sport fishing for salmon.

Sport fishing where you throw a spoon or spinner is a popular form of recreational activity. When going trout fishing, this method is by far the most common. Trout fishing with lures and spinners, one can engage in with relatively inexpensive tackle and it is not particularly difficult to master. Anyone can attach a lure at the end of line, throw it into the water and then wind in.

Although this leisure activity can be easy, this is only half the truth. There are a lot you can and should do to in order to increase your chances of good catches. This is especially true for trout fishing with lures and spinners. Getting the trout to bite is often a challenge and many factors will affect your chances for successful sport fishing. One of the most important factors is to choose the right lure. It is ultimately this that will entice the trout to bite.

Choosing Lure
There are several important factors that affect what you should use the end of the line. When you walk into a sports store to buy equipment, it is easy to become overwhelmed by the varieties on offer. Through this article you will hopefully gain the knowledge you need to make conscious and appropriate assessments in the selection of spinners and lures for this sport fishing.

During trout fishing it is important to consider the size and weight of the lure you use. Some commercials (often American) claim that they can sell you a lure in a size that always will provide good results and catches. This is quite simply wrong. Trout that feed exclusively of small insects generally will not bite on a big spoon, while trout that feed on larger prey almost never bite on a small spinner.

First and foremost, the size must be adapted to your rod. If you use a spinner that is too small, you will experience short casting with poor precision, while a spoon that is too heavy could destroy some of the resilience of the rod. During this sport fishing you must also adapt the lure according to the fish you're looking to catch. Check how big the trout usually are in the area where you are going sport fishing, and then select the size of the lures and spinner on the basis of this knowledge. Also, you need knowledge of the depths and any current conditions that will affect your sport fishing. If you are looking for trout in rivers, strong currents or deep water will require that you use heavier lures.

You must also choose the shape and color on your lures. Usually, the answer is to choose colors that match the natural environment in your fishing spots. The use of colors and shapes that mimic insects and other prey will be a good choice. If the trout feed on a particular insect, it may be wise to use a small spinner to imitate this insect. The general rule is that you should customize your spinners and lures to the prevailing conditions. But as with all forms of sport fishing, there are no absolute rules. You should have a selection of gear that is adapted to local conditions. Also, you should have some gear in other shapes and colors, so you have the ability to vary if the fish do not bite. Variation is often the key to successful sport fishing.

Conditions
During the summer the water temperature is the most important factor for trout fishing. Even when it reaches over 20 degrees Celsius, it is possible to fish for trout, but usually it will be difficult to get good catches. If possible, you should seek out other spots nearby, in which the water is cooler. A small river or a mountain lake will often be well suited for sport fishing when water temperatures are at their highest. Another option is to go sport fishing at dawn, when the water temperature is at its coldest.

Choosing the best suited spinners and spoons requires a little effort from you as a fisherman. The more information and knowledge you have about the conditions at your fishing spots, the greater is the possibility of choosing the right gear.

Choosing the right spinners and spoons will often be the key to successful trout fishing. Variation is often the key to a good catch. Remember that the tips mentioned above are general guidelines. Local conditions will always be a part of the assessments you should do when you try sport fishing with lures and spinners.
In this article we look closely at different types of bait, the benefits, as well as the potential disadvantages of these baits. Seasonal variations, local conditions, availability of bait and the fish you're after, will determine which baits are best. As a general rule, the answer is to choose the bait that the fish have natural access to and that it actually feed on.

Mackerel
Mackerel is often used as bait for sea fishing. Especially at deep water mackerel has proven effective, but this is bait that usually can be used for all forms of sea fishing. The advantages of using mackerel as bait are many, and strictly speaking there is no need for other baits when sea fishing from boats. In several months of the year, mackerel is easily available and one can without any problem fill up the freezer with bait. Mackerel fillets bought in a store should not be used as bait, because the smell is almost absent. Another advantage is that the mackerel sits rather firmly on the hook. This is especially important when fishing at great depths. Notice that the skin of the mackerel is the most durable near the tail.

Mackerel is also easy to split up so that one can vary the size and shape as needed. Small strips that you attach to the jig, is a good example. Most species can be caught using this method, but especially for deep-sea fishing, as well as cod fishing, this is something that is recommended. In addition to the benefits mentioned above mackerel makes a lot of good smell. Several species can smell the mackerel bait on long distance. Especially when sea fishing from an anchored boat, this is a big advantage.

Also, mackerel is well suited when sea fishing from shore. The ability to shape the bait any way you want is a big advantage that makes it possible to use this as bait to most fishing methods. Be careful how you treat mackerel that shall be used for bait. Ideally, one should use mackerel that keeps satisfactory quality even as a food fish. Both for deep sea fishing and sea fishing from shore, mackerel are recommended as bait. Especially at deeper water, this is quite a sure winner.

Shrimps
Shrimp can be used as bait for sea fishing. In fact, shrimp is also effective as bait in fresh water, but keep in mind that in many places it is forbidden to use shrimp when sport fishing in fresh water. Using cooked, whole shrimp is effective, but you can also use raw shrimp. Some choose to divide it into smaller pieces. Both when sea fishing from shore, by boat in less depth, as well as for deep sea fishing, we recommend using whole and cooked shrimp that you buy in the supermarket counter. Fresh shrimp is expensive and for that reason it is not recommended do. Canned shrimp is a poor alternative because they emit little or no odor.

Most fish species like shrimps and thus this bait gives opportunities to an exciting and varied deep sea fishing. Also, when going sea fishing along the coast, shrimp provide opportunities to get many different species on the hook. Combined with good accessibility this makes shrimp into attractive bait. All year round you can buy frozen shrimp at a reasonable price. With shrimp and mackerel as bait will be well equipped for deep sea fishing, as well as sport fishing from shore. For deep-sea shrimp is a good supplement to the mackerel. If you are sea fishing at depths from ranging from 10 to 50 meters, shrimp is in our opinion by far the most effective bait. Also, notice that shrimps have proven very effective when used during cod fishing.

Coalfish and herring
Small coalfish and herring are used as bait for sea fishing. Herring can in many ways be compared with mackerel. For most, however, the supply of herring is not as good as for mackerel. Herring is also difficult to attach securely to the hook. Many species appreciate a piece of herring and especially sport fishing for halibut and flounder, herring is a good choice. For the vast majority mackerel will still to be a better alternative both for coastal and deep sea fishing.

Small coalfish has some other qualities and this is bait that has proved effective during deep sea fishing. It can often be used in the same way as mackerel and in most places the availability of small coalfish is very good. Note that this bait has slightly different properties than herring and mackerel. First and foremost it gives off less smell, which of course is a minus. A big plus is the durable skin that keeps the bait very well attached to the hook. This is a big advantage when fishing in deep water. When going sea fishing from shore, mackerel will mostly be the better choice.

Other baits
Crab is effective bait that has proven to be especially effective during cod fishing. Cod and other species are hunting crab in areas with seaweed, often close to shore. Especially for cod, crab is recommended as bait, notably in shallow water. Some choose to use the crab meat as bait, but we recommend the use of whole crab.

Squid is also bait that is popular in many countries. Many species eat a lot of squid and consequently this is a good alternative. Disadvantage with squid is that it emits little odor. The big advantage is that it sits very well on the hook, and thus well suited for fishing in deep water. Squid can be combined with other types of bait. Combined with bait that gives off much odor, it makes an effective mix for sea fishing at all depths

In this article you will find some general information about sea fishing.

In most areas saltwater fishing is free of charge and the necessary gear can be bought at a reasonable price. Sea fishing is therefore an opportunity that many people can take advantage of regularly. There are both similarities and differences between fishing from shore and sea fishing from a boat. Deep sea fishing is something completely different, which you can read about in another article coming soon.

Sea fishing from boats
A boat gives you more options when you engage in sea fishing. You will then have the opportunity to seek out the small grounds and slopes where the fish feed. You do not need a big boat in order to fish near the coast, but be aware of wind conditions.

I would recommend a small deep-sea rod for sea fishing close to shore. A solid salmon rod can also be used. Sea fishing from a boat means that you are dealing with the current and wind. Adjust the weight on your sinks or lures, aiming to always have good contact with your gear, even if it is powerful drifting conditions. You should definitely take advantage of suspension during this sea fishing. Today, the offer is unbelievably large, so it's just to try different baits until you find your favorites. Personally, I like small suspension of various kinds, like small jigs. The great advantage of suspension is that it gives you the opportunity to try several methods and color simultaneously. Both during cod fishing, as well as during other forms of sea fishing, this has proven effective.

Shore Angling
Along the coast there are thousands of places suitable for sea fishing and many of these locations is suitable throughout the year. In cold areas you must remember to be careful during the winter. It can be slippery and dangerous. If you engage in sea fishing in areas with big waves you should always keep in mind that these can get several meters high, even in during nice weather conditions. This is because big waves can be building up far out at sea.

A rod designed for salmon is ideal for shore angling. The properties required are the same. I usually use suspension even when I fish from shore, but a maximum of one or two. Using the suspension makes it harder to exploit the rod features when you throw, so it might be okay to drop the suspension at locations where the long distance casting is needed. In my opinion, you should use lures ranging from 12 to 60 grams. I normally use lures ranging from 18 to 40 grams when I engage in sea fishing from shore. As when sea fishing from a boat, it is important to have multiple colors to choose from. If the fish do not bite, it will often pay off to try a different color. Variety is often the key to successful angling. Also, remember to adjust your lures to local conditions. They are always an important factor.

When to go sea fishing?
Time of day, not to mention high and low tides can affect the fish's willingness to bite. There are many opinions about this subject. In addition, there are large geographical variations. I'll mention some of the points that are important for sea fishing, but you will almost be certain to experience that these rules are not always correct. As a general rule, I will simply say that you can always catch fish in the sea.

Most agree that the tide could be essential for a good catch. However, experience regarding when it is best to fish varies widely. Local conditions are very crucial. Several locations in southern Norway, the difference between high tide and low tide are only 50cm, while in northern Norway it can be up to 300cm. In other areas like In Great Brittan and France there can also be a big difference. This means off course, that the importance of tide will vary a great deal. Note how the tide is when you go sea fishing. After a while you will get a good basis for deciding when it is best to fish at your locations.

Time of day is a factor that plays a minor role in sea fishing. Personally, I still find myself getting the most fish in the morning and early afternoon, but why this is so, I do not know. During the summer, shore angling is often best in the morning and evening since the fish then moves into lower grounds to hunt. You can get the most fish species in all seasons, but generally speaking, sea fishing is not at its best at the end of the summer when water temperatures are at their highest. Mackerel is an honorable exception.
During cod fishing it is not uncommon to get several other species on the hook. Coalfish and pollack are popular catches that often can be combined with cod fishing. In this article you will find tips on sport fishing for these species.

Pollack has a lot in common with coalfish, meaning that the information in this article to a large extent can be used when sport fishing for both species. However, some differences do exist. Coalfish can be bigger than pollock and you will more often find it in large shoals. Another difference is that the larger pollock often move closer to shore than the big coalfish does. What is meant by coalfish depends a bit on who you ask and in what areas you are doing sport fishing.

Fishing Spots

In areas that contain these species you will normally be able to catch them throughout the year, both close to the coast and offshore. Often you will find them in the same areas as cod is staying, meaning Pollack an coalfish often will be caught during cod fishing. Here are some fishing spots that are well suited for both cod fishing, as well as sport fishing for coalfish and Pollock.

Fishing spots that are located where the seabed is from 100 to 500 meters deep are often the best spots to hunt for big coalfish. Such locations generally provide good sport fishing all year round.

Often you will also find coalfish in areas with an uneven seabed. These ground conditions are a food basket for several fish species and at depths ranging from 100 to 200 meters you will be able to take on big coalfish.

At locations providing strong tidal flow you can experience incredible sport fishing. During such conditions, big coalfish are hunting herring and other prey, something which gives great opportunities to some nice catches.

If you are sport fishing from shore, piers, steep hills and other areas where the water is deep close to shore, often provide the best opportunities. These fishing grounds are suitable for sport fishing all year, but big pollock and coalfish will be a rather rare catch.

If large waves have recently been beating against the coast, you can take catch big coalfish and cod close to shore. The waves have brought up food from the seabed, which attracts many species and often big fish. Cod fishing, as well as sport fishing for other species is recommended at such conditions.

Jigging

Jigging is a common and easy method of this sport fishing. You use a jig or pirk in which the weight is adjusted according to the depth and drift of your fishing grounds. Above the jig you may attach suspensions. Lower your gear directly to the bottom and then move it with a little jerky and fast movements. Notice that jigging at the seabed is not very effective when hunting for big coalfish. They move in all layers hunting for pray, but they will also be found at the bottom. Also, jigging is known as an effective way of cod fishing.

The choice of lures, jigs and suspensions is not very important. Coalfish and Pollack will eat almost anything, so it is not here the challenge lies. The big challenge is to find out where it is located. There are also other methods that can provide you with good catches and exciting experiences when engaging in this sport fishing.

Shore Fishing

Lure fishing from shore is ideal all year round. Seek fishing spots as mentioned above and get going. Long throw will give you the opportunity to fish a larger area, so pick lures that are suitable for this purpose. Lures imitating herring is often a good choice for this sport fishing. Remember to fish effectively at different depths, something you do by varying the speed when reeling in your line. Alternatively, you can vary the weight and shape of your lures. The biggest catches are hard to achieve this way, but when they follow the herring it is not impossible.

Sport Fishing Tips

If you are going for the big catch, sport fishing from a boat gives you the best opportunities. Coalfish moves across large areas and a boat make it much easier to seek locate the fish. The other methods mentioned above is more suited for fishing for smaller coalfish, but the possibilities of big fish are as mentioned always present. Remember that this two species often can be caught during cod fishing.

As mentioned, coalfish in pursuit of herring is a factor you should always keep in mind. An active boat fishing where you fish all depths in different locations will always give you good opportunities. But as with all sport fishing, there are no absolute rules. Local conditions and other factors can change the conditions for any form of sport fishing. Never be afraid to try new and creative methods when fishing.

Bait Fishing from the Shore

Cod fishing from the shore is for many anglers synonymous with bait fishing. Although there are other excellent alternatives available, bait fishing definitely provide some great opportunities for successful cod fishing.

The ability to choose the most appropriate bait will often be crucial for your opportunities during shore angling. First and foremost, you should choose bait that cod will naturally feed on in the relevant area. Be aware that this may vary depending on seasons.

During the spring, one can experience excellent cod fishing at many sandy beaches. Different types of worms are then active on the sandy bottom, and cod indulge in this type of food. During the summer, cod will often be swimming into areas with kelp to feast on crabs. Thereby, crabs will naturally be preferred as bait during summer fishing. These are just a few examples on the seasonal variations.

Finding suitable fishing spots is always important when you engage in cod fishing. Normally cod will not keep together in lager shoals and therefore it will be spread across relatively large areas. Familiarize yourself with the characteristics of a good cod fishing spot before choosing in which area you are going to fish. Then choose a few locations that you believe will be suitable for shore angling and begin your cod fishing. You should be trying all of these locations carefully and under different conditions before you reject an area or before choosing your favorite spot.

Timing is also important for successful cod fishing. Tides, wind, waves and light conditions are some of the conditions that will affect your opportunities for good catches. Read more in the article. When to fish for cod . All shore anglers must expect some days that will provide few or none catches, something that is particularly true for beginners. As you accumulate experience and knowledge you will be able to make decisions based on this and thereby you will experience that your catch rate will improve.

There are many different rigs used during bait fishing from the shore. Some anglers choose acknowledged and commonly used rigs while other anglers choose to develop their own. You will find plenty of suggestions by searching on internet, alternatively you can check with other local anglers. As an inexperienced fisherman, you should not spend too much time on your equipment. The time you should instead spend on finding the best bait, the best fishing spots and of course on the actual fishing. The easiest way would be to attach a sinker at the end of your line. A bit above this, you use a 3-way swivel to create a leader where you attach the bait hook. Two such leaders will often be the best choice.

Successful cod fishing will often depend on knowledge, dedication, patience and a little bit luck. This is especially true for shore angling. Show patience and endurance. The reward will often be good catches and great experiences.

Summer fishing for cod

Summer fishing for cod is something we definitely recommend that you try out. Many anglers put away their equipment during the hot summer months and thereby they are missing out on some exciting cod fishing. Summer fishing means slightly different requirements in relation too spots and when to fish, but both from shore and from boat it is possible to experience successful summer fishing for cod.

In most areas cod moves out to deeper water when the temperature rises. This means that you often will have to find new fishing spots, and also that you may have to fish at other times. If you want to experience some successful summer fishing it is important to always consider the conditions. Local conditions will as always affect how to approach cod fishing and particularly the water temperature will affect summer fishing for cod. Whether you are fishing from shore or from boat, will determine how and where you will find cod. First we look more closely at summer fishing from shore.

Summer fishing from shore
Summer fishing can be challenging, but also during the summer months, there are good opportunities to catch cod. You can off course use the same techniques and fishing spots as for cod fishing during the winter, but there are two methods that we especially recommend for summer fishing.

One method is night fishing. As mentioned, cod often prefer deeper water when the temperature rises. At night however, it will often come back towards the shoreline in search of food. Especially in the early morning, when the water temperature has cooled down, you will be able to experience great summer fishing. Clear water and strong sunshine can make summer fishing difficult. By using the night time, you will avoid this problem and thereby increase the opportunities for good catches.

The second method is summer fishing in areas that contain a lot of kelp. At this time of year, cod will often be chasing crabs in such areas. In order to succeed with this method, it is important that you spend some time finding suitable spots. Furthermore, you should avoid periods of strong tidal currents. Usually bait that cod naturally feed on will provide the best results. This suggests that crab would be the best choice for summer fishing in areas with kelp. Cod is however not picky and therefore other kinds of bait can also be used during such summer fishing.

Summer fishing from boat
Summer fishing from boat gives the opportunity to follow cod to deeper and cooler water. Partly because this season often offers calm wind conditions, cod fishing offshore is in many places a popular type of summer fishing. However, it is not necessary to move that far out to sea. In many areas you can find big cod relatively close to shore also during the summer.

Summer fishing from boast sets no special demands on equipment or methods. One can, in other words commit to cod fishing in the same way as during the other seasons. It is the choice of fishing spots that often will be a challenge during summer fishing for cod. Generally, one should seek spots located in deeper water. It may be offshore, but also in areas of deep water close to shore. Many fjords provide excellent conditions for summer fishing.

A good tip is to try summer fishing for cod close by a wreck. Such fishing spots have proved to produce good catches during this time of year. More about this kind of summer fishing can be found in the article wreck fishing for cod. Apart from this, we recommend that you explore fishing spots in your area. Remember that cod often will be found in shoals containing smaller fish such as small coalfish. This provides opportunities to experience great summer fishing close to shore.

Fishing equipment
Summer fishing poses no special requirements regarding the selection of fishing equipment. As for most forms of sport fishing, one should adapt the equipment to current conditions. During cod fishing in areas with kelp or rough bottom conditions, strong lines should be used. If long distance casting is required, one should use lighter lines. During summer fishing from boats, the equipment should primarily be adapted to the depth as well as the size of the cod you are chasing.

As mentioned, the choice of bait should be adapted to what cod naturally feed on. Seasonal, as well as local conditions, will therefore determine which bait will work best. Crab has proved to give good catches during summer fishing for cod. Shrimp and mackerel are other baits that have proven effective during summer fishing. However, there is no right or wrong. Most anglers have their own favorites and their own methods. Use bait that you have faith in. Remember that cod are not a picky species and it will normally eat almost anything.

Summer fishing – Try it!
Summer fishing for cod can provide excellent catches. At the same time you will often catch other species during summer cod fishing. Another factor that makes summer fishing an enjoyable experience is of course the weather. Whether you are cod fishing from shore or boat, beautiful summer days will provide some great experiences even when the big fish does not occur. Try to seek out spots where cod are chasing food. Such areas will provide good opportunities for some successful summer fishing.
During cod fishing your equipment should both help you to get the fish to bite, as well as get it safely ashore. What types of cod fishing you engaged in, as well as how big fishes you are chasing, will determine the requirements set on your fishing equipment.

An angler should always use fishing equipment that keeps a satisfactory quality. It's foolish to lose the opportunity to experience great cod fishing because of poor or improper equipment. Equally foolish it is to spend money on equipment that is unsuitable for cod fishing. In the articles about rods and lures you will find information about choosing gear for cod fishing. Now we look more closely at what one should consider before choosing reel and line intended for cod fishing.

Cod Fishing Reels
The braking/crank system is a very important part of any fishing reel. Along with the line and the rod it should make it possible to get any catch safely ashore. Cod fishing offers opportunities for some really big fishes and by using a well-functioning reel you should be able to fight even the biggest cod. A reel intended for cod fishing should have a system that provides smooth resistance even during heavy loads. Also, it should be easy to adjust the resistance during the actual fishing.

Another important factor is the behavior of the reel when reeling the line. Reels that make reeling hard or reels that have irregular movements and poor rhythm should never be used. When reeling in your line it should feel smooth, so that you always stay in good contact with the bait or lure. Please note that fishing reels which feel excellent in the store may behave differently when they are exposed to pressure.

Cod Fishing from a boat
During cod fishing from boats a well-functioning brake system is by far the most important quality of a reel. Especially when you are chasing the big fishes, this is extremely important. Such circumstances also mean that it is important to have a reel that is easy to handle. Cod fishing in deep water will be an exhausting experience with a fishing reel that makes it hard to reel in your line.

Also remember to choose a reel that can accommodate enough fishing line and that allow you to use the line you prefer. Usually this is the part of the cod fishing equipment that is most expensive, but you need not spend large amounts in order to experience successful cod fishing. A reasonable prized reel from a recognized manufacturer will give you a piece of equipment that will last for many, many years.

Shore fishing for cod
A fishing reel with a well-functioning brake system is also important during cod fishing from the shore. This is especially true during cod fishing with lures, meaning that relatively light rods and relatively thin lines are being used. Of course, a fishing reel intended for this form of cod fishing must also be able hold enough line, but this is rarely a problem.

The possibilities for long distance casting are often extremely important during cod fishing from shore. This means that a reel should drop your line out easily, without resistance or obstruction. Fishing reels in which the line lies smooth and nicely on the spool, is therefore a good choice for cod fishing from shore. Prices vary widely, but you can get reels of good quality at relatively reasonable prices.

Cod fishing line
The selection of fishing equipment is to a large extent about personal preference, but some premises should be considered. First and foremost, all your fishing gear should be suited according to local conditions, as well as the size of fish you are looking for. Basically, regular monofilament fishing line will prove more than good enough for cod fishing from shore. During boat fishing in deeper water, however, multi-filament lines will often be a great advantage.

Choices of line will be a balance between the desire for long distance casting, high breaking strength, and invisibility for the fish. Many inexperienced anglers choose fishing line with too large diameter. Especially for fishing in clear water, a thin line may be necessary. You risk losing some fish, but it's better than the alternative. The alternative is often cod fishing with few or none catches.

Multi-filament line
In relation to the diameter, multi-filament fishing lines have an incredibly high breaking strength. In addition, this is a fishing line that does not stretch during fishing. Therefore you will experience better contact with your lure or bait. The benefits of multi-filament fishing lines are obvious. Higher breaking strength increases the ability to fight big cod, but first and foremost, it provides the opportunity to use thinner lines during cod fishing.

Among other things, this means that you can put more line on a reel, if desired. When cod fishing in deep water, trolling or during strong currents, a thinner line will be a great advantage. A smaller surface means less resistance and thus better contact with your tackle. Opportunities for effective cod fishing in deep water, for example, will be much better if one uses multi-filament fishing line. Great casting qualities and increased sensitivity are other benefits with the multi-filament, but there are also disadvantages. A line that does not stretch means that fish can more easily break free from the hook. The durability of multi-filament line will often prove to be unsatisfying. Also note that this is costly lines.

Monofilament line
Monofilament is the traditional fishing line that most people still use. In most situations and during the most circumstances, this will still be the best choice for cod fishing. The advantages of monofilament lines are many. First and foremost, there is an enormous range available, something that to some extent makes it possible to customize the qualities to local conditions. Choices of color and stiffness are some examples.

The cost is also a great advantage with this type of line. Although there are differences in various types of monofilament lines, prices are generally low. Another important advantage is that such lines will usually be less visible for fish, something that can be especially important during cod fishing in clear water. Monofilament lines have no major drawbacks. All in all, this is lines that can safely be named all-round fishing equipment.

Cod fishing equipment
You should select fishing equipment that is suitable for the type cod fishing you are attending. Deep sea cod fishing means it is necessary to use specialized reels, while you will have more freedom to choose reels intended for shore fishing. During cod fishing from the shore, your choice of fishing line will be very important. This must be adapted to local conditions and several spools with different diameter lines are recommended. This will enable you to cope with different conditions during cod fishing.
A fishing rod is widely regarded as the most important part of any equipment. Your rod should help you present your bait or lure to the fish, as well as when you are fighting a fish.

The action refers to how much a rod bends when you're casting or have a fish at the end of the line. A fast action rod bends just at the tip, while a moderate action rod bends over the last half. A slow action rod bends all the way into the handle. In general, slow action will be of great help when you are fighting a fish, while a faster action is an advantage in when casting. What you should choose depends on the method of fishing, but it is also a matter of preference.

Beach casting
Using live bait places special requirements on the rod. It should have an action that allows long distance casting. Also, it should allow you to use quiet heavy sinkers. These are qualities that easily can be combined and you will find many rods with these characteristics. However, it is not that simple, there are other important considerations one must take.

The tip action should be sensitive enough to make you feel when the fish bite. Too further complicate your choice, a slow action will be preferable when you are fighting a big fish. One should also bear in mind that live bait can easily be torn off the hook during casting. In relation to this slow action rod would be the best choice.

As you understand there are several conflicting qualities that are desirable in a rod intended for casting with bait. This means that you have to compromise and choose a rod that best suits the fishing you are going to practice. In general, we will recommend a moderate action rod for this cod fishing. If you don`t depend on the long casts or heavy sinkers, a slow action rod could be used. If you are fishing in areas where long-distance casting and heavy rigs will be used, a fast action rod will be necessary. Basically, a fishing rod between 13 and 15 feet will be ideal for shore fishing using bait.

Casting lures
Casting with lures also sets different requirements on a fishing rod. A fast or moderate action rod is preferable in relation to casting characteristics, while a slow action rod will make it easier to get your catch safely ashore. For any inexperienced fisherman a fishing rod with moderate action will be the best choice. Such a rod has relatively good casting qualities and at the same time it will work fine when you have fish on your line.

A fast action rod will provide better opportunities for long-distance casting, but it will make it more difficult to get fish that bites safely ashore. If you are using heavy lures, such a fishing rod will always the best choice, but remember that you have to be relatively skilled at casting in order to take advantage of the characteristics in a fast action rod. Generally, a longer fishing rod means opportunities to cast further, but remember that a longer rod is also harder to use.

Boat fishing
Cod fishing from boat sets entirely different requirements on the rod. Most importantly, such a rod should have qualities that helps you during the actual fishing, as well as when you are fighting the big fishes. How big fishes you are looking for, how deep the conditions are, as well as how heavy jigs and sinkers you will be using, should determine which rod you choose.

A fast action rod will be an advantage when fishing for the big fishes. Such a fishing rod will also be best suited for jigging. A slow action rod provides a much better experience when fishing for smaller fish. Such a rod should be preferred if you are using bait. A cod fishing rod with moderate action would be the best choice for most newbies. It can be used for both jigging and bait fishing during most conditions.
We begin by looking at lures suitable for cod fishing from shore. This is a form of sport fishing that anyone can learn. Piers, small islands, steep slopes and other places where water is relatively deep close to shore, are well suited areas for this type of cod fishing.

Cod is a fish that eat almost everything, but still it might be wise to adapt your choice of fishing equipment to its natural food. If the cod is chasing herring it would be preferable to choose a herring imitation. Both spoons and more compact lures have proven to be effective cod catchers. It is recommended that you have both these types of lures among your fishing equipment. Variation is important for any fisherman that wants to be successful under different conditions. Therefore you should also have lures with different colors, shape sand sizes among your fishing equipment. This will increase your opportunities for good catches.

Cod fishing lures
Here's an overview including some of the best lures for cod fishing, as well as some information about these. These are lures that are recognized for their qualities as cod lures. Also, you will find some of my personal favorites that I always have among my fishing equipment.
Solvkroken deliver this lure in 10 colors ranging from 16 to 80 grams.

Toby is a classic lure well suited for cod fishing. The special shape gives it lively, irregular movements, which often causes the fish to bite. Abu Garcia provides this lure in a large variety of colors usually found from 7 to 28 grams. This lure is perfect for cod fishing in shallower water.

Moresilda is an all-round lure that is sold worldwide. This renowned lure has a pattern of movement that often causes the cod to bite. It is always among my fishing equipment. Moresilda is distributed by Rapala VMC Corp and it is available in 14 color variations ranging from 6 to 55 grams.

Luhr-Jensen Krocodile is an all-round lure that is best known for its abilities as a salmon lure. However, it is also excellent for cod fishing. This lure moves a lot in the water. Therefore it is best suited for shallow water. This spoon is manufactured by Luhr Jensen in Oregon, USA. It is available in 13 color options ranging from 7 to 29 grams.

Stingsild is known all over the world. This lure is ideal for long casting and deep conditions, something that makes it well suited for cod fishing. Preferably it should be fished with jerky movements along the bottom. Stingsild is standard fishing equipment for many sea anglers. Solvkroken provides this lure in 7 colors ranging from 18 to 75 grams.

Cod fishing lures can be found in a large selection. By choosing from the selection mentioned above you will be able to meet any conditions. Choose some lures with a lot of movement like Toby, and some that allow you to long distance casting like Stingsild. If I should choose only one lure for cod fishing, I would choose Jensen Pirken. This lure has provided me with a lot of great catches during all kind of conditions.

Jigging for cod
It is usually during cod fishing from a boat that the largest fish are caught. Cod is known as a bottom fish, meaning that jigging is effective method. Here is a list of some acknowledged jigs suitable for cod fishing. You should have several different colors, shapes and sizes, among your fishing equipment. Variation and the opportunities to cope with all kind of conditions are essential if you are to achieve great catches.

The Norwegian Traditional Jig is a real classic that sells well worldwide. Its unique movement allows you to catch cod during any conceivable conditions. Solvkroken deliver this jig in weights ranging from 75 to 1,000 grams. All anglers that are fishing from boats should definitely have this legendary jig among their fishing equipment.

Silen is a compact jig that is well suited for jigging. It moves relatively little in the water and therefore it should be fished actively. Abu Garcia provides this in several colors and the sizes ranging from 150 to 750 grams.

Jensen Jig is a larger version of the famous Jensen Pirken. This is an excellent all round jig suitable for cod fishing at smaller depth. It has a compact form combined with some great movements. Jensen jig can be found in 6 color variations ranging from 100 to 400 grams.

Elbe Cod is a classic Jig designed for cod fishing. This is a relatively compact jig, that has proved effective for many years. It is available in weights ranging from 100 to 300 grams, making it are suitable for cod fishing at minor depths. Elbe Cod should be fished actively.

All anglers have their own favorites. The most important thing is to have several sizes and colors among your fishing equipment. Include a few compact jigs like Silen, as well as some jigs with more movement like the traditional Norwegian Jig among your fishing equipment. Then you will be well equipped for cod fishing in all conditions and at any depths. My personal favorite is without a doubt the Norwegian traditional Jig. This can be used during any conditions. Therefore it is an excellent jig for cod fishing.
Great catches, including large individuals are often caught close by wrecks, and many a fishermen have set their personal fishing records at such spots. This type of cod fishing requires some knowledge, which we will offer on this website. There are two main approaches to wreck fishing. Either you fish from a boat that is anchored or you fish from a boat drifting freely.

Fishing Spots
Seeking out spots suitable for this type of cod fishing, will be the first and possibly also the most important thing to do. A depth sounder, together with a good draft or a GPS will prove to be of invaluable help. If you lack local knowledge, you should consider taking part in a wreck fishing charter. If you have little experience from this form of cod fishing the same applies. Contact your local angling club or use the internet to find offers on such charters. Read the article cod fishing spots for tips on other fishing grounds that will provide good opportunities.

From anchored boat
During wreck fishing from an anchored boat is very important that the boat is maneuvered into a suitable position. The boat should be positioned a bit upstream in relation to the wreck. However, the distance should not be too long. This because it should be possible to effectively fish close by the wreck.

Using bait will often yield the best results, but jigging may also provide some really good catches. No matter which method you are choosing, the presentation of the bait or jig will be essential. You should try to present your bait very close to the wreck, along the seabed.

From drifting boat
Cod fishing from a drifting boat will also provide excellent opportunities for some great catches. The deciding factor will often be how fast, as well as in what direction the boat is drifting. The best chances you will normally experience when the boat drifts along or above the wreck. It will require some experience to place the boat in the best positions. A combination of wind and tidal water will determine the boat's movement during such cod fishing. Typically, jigging will be the preferred method during wreck fishing from drifting boats, but bait can also provide a high catch rate.

If you lack local knowledge, you should definitely join a chartered boat. The same applies if you have little or no experience from wreck fishing. You will then get a local skipper, who will know how to locate the best spots. In addition, you will be able to pick up good tips from the other participating fishermen.

Inshore or offshore?
A distinction is usually made between inshore and offshore wreck fishing. Methods are usually the same no matter where you are engaged in cod fishing. The biggest difference is normally that offshore fishing requires more powerful equipment. Remember that you are more vulnerable to bad weather during offshore fishing. If you are planning on using your own boat for cod fishing, you should begin wreck fishing inshore. It will often be easier to learn this challenging way of cod fishing on such fishing spots. Also, you will to some extent be protected from harsh weather conditions.

Wreck Fishing
When you engage in wreck fishing, it might be useful to choose methods and fishing spots based on your knowledge about cod. This fish stays close to the wrecks out of two main reasons. First and foremost, it is feeding at this location. It will therefore be an advantage if you adjust your bait, pirk/jigs, suspension and other gear according to cod's natural food source. Cod is also seeking protection in and close by the wreck. At the strong tidal current it will, for example, often seek quiet areas on the lower side of the current.
Both live bait such as ragworms and dead bait such as mackerel and shrimps are used as bait in saltwater. Some knowledge about this type of cod fishing will increase your opportunities to achieve some great catches.

About Bait Fishing
Bait fishing offers excellent opportunities, but also a few challenges. Which bait to use will be an important choice that should be influenced by several surrounding factors. There are many types of bait that have proven suitable for cod fishing. For many anglers, this is also an important part of the experience.

Choosing bait
Cod fishing is not an exact science, there is no right or wrong and everyone does things a little differently. Most anglers have their favorite bait and argue that this is best suited for cod fishing. When selecting bait, you should listen to the many well-meaning advices with a bit skepticism. Instead of using other people's favorites, you should determine your own. Try to determine the fish's natural food supplier in the area where you are going fishing. If you engage in cod fishing in an area where cod are chasing herring or small coalfish, this will obviously be the bait you should use. More on Sea fishing baits.

Fishing Spots
Locating suitable areas will always be important. In the article cod fishing spots, you will find information about this challenge. Bait fishing you can engage in from an anchored boat, as well as from a boat that is drifting. The most common alternative will in most areas be bait fishing from an anchored boat, but also when drifting bait has proven very successful.

Equipment
There are many methods and opinions available when you are rigging your equipment. However, strictly speaking you don`t need to spend much time doing this. A simple solution works very well for most fishermen. Let the fanatics spend their time setting up their gear, while the rest of us enjoy the actual fishing. Attach a sinker at the end of your tippet. The weight must be adjusted in relation to depth and current conditions. Then attach one or two leaders above the sinker using a 3-way swivel. At the end of the leader you attach a hook that is adapted to the size of fish you are chasing. The distance between the sinker and leader, as well as the length of the tippet should be determined by bottom conditions. Rough bottom conditions meaning that longer distance is needed.

When all your equipment is good to go and the boat is anchored at a suitable position, it's time to start fishing. Cod fishing is known as a typical bottom fishing, so the sinker should lowered down to the seabed. Patience is important during this type of cod fishing, and you will often have to wait a while before the fish bites. Especially if you use bait that submits a lot of scent, you should show great patience. As the scent spreads in the water it will attract cod towards your bait. Take note that cod can smell bait at a distance of several hundred meters.

Bait Fishing
Cod Fishing from a boat that is drifting means that slightly different requirements are set on bait fishing. You should still be adapting your sinker to the conditions and you should still fish along the bottom. The actual fishing you should however, vary more. Change between fishing with no movement and using long, smooth jigging motions. During this type for the cod fishing, it is advisable to use bait that sits firmly attached to the hook. A strong scent is not as important when cod fishing from a drifting boat. This is partly because the boat will be moving away from the “scent track”.

Bait fishing is both exciting, as well as effecitve, meaning it will often provide you with some great catches. Do you lack the patience for such fishing, or maybe you are unsure of the methods? Then a good alternative is to attach bait on a traditional jig. This has often proved to be a successful method and also it is an easy way of bait fishing for cod. You simply attach chunks of bait on the hook below the jig body. Preferably you should use bait that sits firmly on the hook. Shrimp and mackerel are ideally suited. The last possibility is to replace the suspension, if any, that are used. Replace the artificial bait you are using with hooks intended for bait.

This is a method that is suitable for most people, as well as in most areas. The main benefit you get from using boats is freedom of movement. The opportunities to seek out good fishing spots will usually be a lot better than during shore angling, something you should take advantage of. Feel free to read more about choosing cod fishing spots.

By doing so, the boat will be brought across the fishing ground and thus allowing you some efficient cod fishing. Once you've drifted past this spot, you should move the boat back to where you started.

If the fish don`t bite, you should choose a new starting point. If you drifted across the middle of the fishing ground in the first the run, try a bit further out toward the edges the next few drives. The purpose of jigging is finding fish, meaning that the entire ground should be fished efficiently, if necessary.

If you lack local knowledge or if you are looking to find some new fishing spots, it can often be a good idea start at a random location. Choose a location that looks to be suitable, based on the draft and if available a depth sounder. Then it is really just to get your cod fishing started. Let the boat drift freely while hoping for the best.

The opportunities for good catches are often smaller at this form of cod fishing, but the opportunities to find new fishing spots will in many ways makes up for this. When you catch fish, you should mark the location on your draft, this for future reference and use. If conditions are very calm, this form of cod fishing may be difficult. If the boat does not move, you will not be able to effectively fish new areas.

How fast the boat is drifting will be an important factor during Cod jigging. The fishing equipment and especially the jig/pirk, must be adapted to these conditions. If there is a strong tidal current you will need to use heavier jigs in order to fish effectively. Areas that are located in shallower water will often be preferable under conditions that provide a lot of drifting. Cod fishing in really deep water will often require that boat is moving relatively slowly.

This type of cod fishing is quite easy. The jig, also known as pirk, is lowered to the bottom and then worked up and down in a fashion known as jigging. If you are jigging during strong tidal currents, you may want to take a few breaks from the jigging motions. The current will then cause the jig and the suspension to move and thereby fish effectively. The use of suspension is recommended during cod fishing, with the possible exception of the pursuit of really big fishes. Attach 2-4 suspension with approximately a foot between them.

Be aware that cod fishing mostly take place close to or at the bottom. Cod is a typical bottom fish and it is only when it hunts large shoals of prey fish (usually herring or small coalfish) that it moves into higher water layers.

Cod fishing from an anchored boat, jigging may also be very effective. Many of the same premises will apply for such cod fishing, but you will be able to select jiggs more freely. As long as the boat is stationary, you will not need such heavy jigs in order to fish effectively along the bottom. If you are engaging in cod fishing from an anchored boat, active jigging will be important.

Jigging is an easy and commonly used method. You can engage in this sport fishing in depths ranging from twenty up to several hundred feet. Especially at smaller depths close to shore, this is a type of cod fishing that is suitable for the entire family. Often you will find that other species are caught during Jigging.
In most areas you will be able to fish all year round, as well as around the clock. However, there are some periods of time that are particularly suitable for cod fishing.

The best period for cod fishing is from early October until April throughout. However, you can experience great catches even during the rest of the year. Many fishermen complain about small catches during the summer, something that is often caused by the fact that cod moves into other areas. This species prefers cool water, so when the temperature reaches its peak in the summer, it will seek deeper water. Cod fishing further from the shore will therefore offer the best opportunities during the summer. Feel free to read more about cod fishing spots.

Summer fishing
Also during the summer you could catch cod in shallow water close by the coast. Areas, in which the water temperature stays below 20 degrees Celsius, would then be preferable. I would definitely recommend summer fishing for cod. Even if you don`t get the biggest catches, a beautiful summer day will provide some great experiences. Summer fishing in a small boat along the coast often means some idyllic and great outdoor experiences. More about summer fishing

Time of Day
All of hours are suitable for cod fishing from boats. The exception is cod fishing in shallow water. If you seek areas where the water is no deeper than 40-50 feet, bright sunlight could complicate fishing. Especially in areas containing clear water, night fishing will then be the best option.

Tides
Tides will affect cod fishing in several different ways. Local conditions vary widely, and these will determine whether it is best to fish at high tide or at low tide. The movements created by the tides will affect cod's food supply, and if you are cod fishing inshore you will often find the best fishing on the rising tide. Tidal water will then lead food towards the shore and the cod will follow.

During cod fishing further from the shore, it will generally be preferable to avoid spring tide. When engaging in jigging, it is common to allow the boat to drift freely. Wind conditions and the tidal water will then determine the boats movements. Periods of strong tidal currents should be avoided during jigging, mainly because the boat then will move too fast for you to fish effectively at the bottom.

Go Cod Fishing
Local conditions will always have a decisive impact on what time of year, as well as on what time of day cod fishing will produce the best catches. You should always take this into consideration when you are planning a fishing trip.

My recommendation is nevertheless that you try cod fishing whenever you feel like it. Even in areas containing shallow and clear water, it will be possible to catch cod during bright and warm summer days. Although you can`t expect the biggest catches, often the joy by the fish you catch will be especially great. It will always be satisfying to catch fish during difficult conditions.

Large underwater reefs that are located in deep water will often prove to be excellent cod fishing spots. At such spots, a lot of the cod's natural prey will be gathered and therefore cod will normally be more than willing to bite. The same goes for areas where the seabed contains steep slopes/hillsides. At such places you can experience some fantastic catches especially at the point where the seabed flattens out.

Wreck fishing is a well-known concept and especially in deeper water, wrecks will provide excellent opportunities for some great cathces. At such fishing spots cod will find lots of food while it at seeks protection in the wreck. Smaller underwater reefs will likewise provide good cod fishing spots.

Well suited fishing spots can also be found in areas that contains rough ground. In such areas there will be lots of food and small prey fish, meaning that several species of fish congregate here. In areas close to shore, you will be able to experience good catches even in places where the seabed is even. In order to experience this, you should seek fishing spots that contains kelp. Cod will reside in such areas to hunt crabs, a favorite meal.

When you are looking for cod fishing spots, you should keep in mind that this is a greedy fish. All areas, in which cod will find food, would therefore a preferable choice. As an example, it will often be located in and below large shoals of small coalfish or herring.

Don`t be afraid to try tour luck in shallow water. In areas that provide good food supply, you will find excellent opportunities at depths from 20 to 50feet. Many anglers have experienced some incredible great catches in shallow water, especially during the winter and spring.

You will almost invariably find cod in the vicinity of wrecks, rocky reefs, steep subsea hillsides, and in areas containing rough ground. Even lightly broken ground amongst an otherwise clean seabed will be enough to keep cod in this area. When you are going cod fishing, you should attempt to locate such locations.

Large rods are usually necessary, and it requires a lot of training to achieve sufficiently long casting. Information on how to choose cod fishing rods.

Seeking out areas where the water is deep close to shore, will often prove to be a good alternative for cod fishing, especially for inexperienced anglers. By fishing from a pier, sticking out from the shoreline, long distance casting will not be that important.

Often, spin fishing will prove to be the best alternative for novice fishermen, and many experienced anglers also prefer this method. Shorter rods, providing fast action (elasticity) is preferable for this type of cod fishing. Long distance casting is an advantage even when spin fishing, but for beginners it`s easier to achieve this with the use of lures than it is with the use of live bait.

During cod fishing from piers and similar fishing spots, you will often find that the fish are biting just a few meters away from you. The opportunities for great catches are therefore excellent, even for those who can`t manage the longest casts.

Fly fishing is a demanding and challenging way of cod fishing. Good casting technique is of the outmost importance if you are going to try this type of shore fishing.

Regardless what type of cod fishing you prefer, the opportunities to catch fish will always be present. Try to locate fishing spots that are suitable for your casting skills. Then you will have the best opportunities for good catches and thereby you will get the best possible experiences during cod fishing.

To increase the opportunities for good catches, it will be useful to have some basic knowledge. In the article cod fishing spots, you can read about where to fish for cod. Now, you will get a few tips about when you should be cod fishing from the shore.

In some areas there are huge differences between high tide and low tide, while in other areas there are only minimal differences. In general, the days before and after spring tides will provide excellent opportunities for cod fishing from the shore.

The tide can also affect your access to the fishing spots. In some areas, low tide will prove an advantage, because you then can move further out from the shore. This will provide opportunities to reach fish that is present further out to sea. Elsewhere, high tide will be an advantage because cod are staying close by the shore. It will be adviseble to always check tide conditions at your fishing spots and also to seek information from (other) local anglers. Remember that even weak tidal flows could affect your cod fishing. This because such a flow often will affect the pray that cod are feeding on.

Basically all hours are suitable for cod fishing from the shore, but there are some exceptions. If you are fishing in areas with shallow and clear water, it will often be best to go fishing between the time of sunset and sunrise. Sport fishing, sunshine and clear shallow water don`t mix well.

Cod much prefers the cold water, so when the water temperature reaches its peak during the summer, it will move into deeper water. At night, however, cod moves back into shallower water hunting for food. Therefore "the dark hours" will often provide the best opportunities when you are trying for cod at this time of year. More about summer fishing.

As you can see there are some things you can do in order to increase your opportunities for good catches during the cod fishing from the shore. But keep in mind that you practically always will be able to catch cod. Even on a warm and bright summer day, the cod can bite at the middle of the day. Never be afraid to try cod fishing whenever you feel like it.

Unfortunately, many fishermen will experience that they can`t catch cod, although they are fishing in suitable areas. This is usually due to casting at the wrong fishing spots. Many fishermen choose to fish in places where the bottom conditions are smooth and easy to handle, often out of fear of losing fishing equipment that could jam itself. This is a completely wrong approach to cod fishing. Cod is a bottom fish, and if you are looking for this species you must be willing to risk the loss of some fishing equipment.

If you are cod fishing from the sandy beaches the cod will often be located in areas where the seabed slopes towards deeper water. Seek such fishing spots and you will experience good opportunities to catch this species.

After a period of stomy weather you may experience great cod fishing very close to the shore. Storms will often bring food into these areas, and therefore the cod swims into shallow water. In general, beaches with a rough seabed or steep slopes will provide be best conditions for cod fishing from shore. If the beach also has areas of kelp, it is certainly an advantage.

In some areas you will find the best fishing spots by staying away from sandy beaches. Here are some examples of areas suitable for cod fishing from the shore. Piers and other places sticking out from the shore will often offer very good opportunities. You will then have the opportunity to fish areas further from shore, areas which is usually unavailable when you are shore angling.

Casting from rocks and small mountains will often prove to be successful. In such areas you can often find cod close to shore. This becouse it will find food and protection among a rough seabed with lot of kelp.

Areas with rocks and small islets located close to shore, means rough bottom conditions and opportunities to experience some great cod fishing. In these areas you will also get many other species, such as pollack and coalfish.

Try cod fishing when the waves beat against the coastline. In such situations, food is often brought up from the seabed, and this is a delight for many species. First and foremost, you should become familiar with the area in which you will engage in cod fishing. How the seabed appears is the most important factor when choosing cod fishing spots.
