MATLAB GUI Basic Programming: Tutorial 2:- Make Simple Basic Image Viewer using MATLAB

Hello Code Breakers,
Here i am with another Basic Tutorial for MATLAB GUI Programming. Today i am going to show you how to make simple image viewer using MATLAB. It will be quite fun. so Lets Break It.

First of all if you have not check my first Tutorial and you are not aware of MATLAB GUIDE than first check that. MATLAB GUI Basic Programming Tutorial1

Now here I will asume that you know how to open GUIDE and save you project. So first open GUIDE and Select Blank GUI(Default) and save it as Tutorial2. This will generate 2 files "Tutorial2.fig" and "Tutorial2.m". You can save this with whatever name you want to use.

So now if you have checked my MATLAB GUI Basic Programming Tutorial1 you have idea about how to use Push Button and Edit Text components. It this we are going to use one new component called "Axes" a shown in above figure.

So lets Drag and Drop all the components in drawing area and adjust them as showed in below figure.

So it should be Look like this. Now let me explain the use of all three components in this tutorial.

Push Button: we ware going to use Push Button as to open file browser for selecting image file.
Edit Text: we will display the path of the selected image file in Edit Text.
Axes: we are going to use axes as image viewer which ever image we will select it will be displayed in axes.

Now lets change the Properties of Components according to our convenience.

For axes
change its "Tag" properties from "axes1" to "img_display"

For Push Button

String: Load Image
Tag: pb_load

For Edit Text

Now as we have set all the properties save the file and switch to Tutorial2.m file.

Now find the Callback function for "pb_load" push button.

Now On button Click Following events occurs...

Open file Browser.
Select image File.
Display image on axes
Diplay file path in Edit Text Box.

So for that we need to add some line at the end of function.

So first for Open File browser

[filename, pathname] = uigetfile({'*.bmp';'*.jpg';'*.gif';'*.*'}, 'Pick an Image File');

here filename is variable which stores the name of file which we will select. and pathname is variable which stores the file path.

uigetfile() is matlab inbuilt function which will open the file browser. Now if you want add file type in file selection you can do like this.

uigetfile({'file type1','file type2','*.*'},'File browser name');

Here '*.*' is used to show "All files" in file browser.

Now after that we want to read image file so that we can display it in matlab axis component.

img=imread([pathname,filename]);

Here imread() is matlab inbuilt function which will read image file and will store in matlab variable.

Here img matlab variable.

To set the file path in Edit Box

set(handles.edit1,'String',[pathname,filename]);

To display Image on Axes.
axes(handles.img_display);
imagesc(img);
set(handles.img_display,'Visible','off');

Here imagesc() is matlab inbuilt function for detail you can use MATLAB help which will give you best example of this function.

So that's it our final code will be look like this

MATLAB GUI Basic Programming:Tutorial 1-Simple Button Click Event Example

Today I am going to start new tutorial series of MATLAB GUI programming especially for my fellow juniors who are making their project in MATLAB.

Today I will show you one simple tutorial on how to use button click event. But before that just keep one thing in mind about programming.

Your Programming will be as great as your Imagination.

The more you imagine well the more great your programming will be. There is no limit until we make one. So just keep your hard work and your great imagination UP and you will find your way in every complex and situation, and i will be sure that you will be amazed by your own programming and will be asking yourself
"Woww... Is this software made by me???" :-D

Now enough of this Philosophy...Lets Break It.

So i assume that you have well installed MATLAB in your computer.so here we go,open MATLAB and you will see following screen.

Now follow the Step 1 and Step 2 as show in above figure.

When You completed with Step 2 the GUIDE Quick Start window will be appeared.It has some predefined templates. Select Blank GUI(Default) and press Ok.

Now when you click ok, You will see a GUIDE window.

So first of all save this file as your desired location. Trust me friends it is good habit to save file from the starting of work. :-D

Here i am saving this file as Tutorial1. Now friends note here when you save this file for first time, two file will be generated with ".m" and ".fig" extension. For me it will be "Tutorial1.m" and "Tutorial1.fig" .

Now in GUIDE you will see toolbar at the left side.

Now as you can see in above figure that i have point out specific 3 components. Push Button,Static Text and Edit Text.

Push Button: It is general button.
Edit Text: It is a text box in witch we can write text.
Static Text: It is a general text which act as Label.

Now one by one drag and drop all 3 components in working area.

Now we will change the properties of every component. we will see the example of "Edit Text" properties and you have to do same for rest of the components.

So keep the cursor on Edit Text and press Right Click.and select "Property Inspector".

You will see Inspector Window.

Now we want edit text Box empty so for that find "String" property from Inspector window and delete whatever is written in its value.Here you also change "Tag" value according to your wish. This Tag will be used as unique identifier for your particular component. Here i hav ket that as it is.

Do the same for "Static Text" and "Push Button".

here for Push Button I have Change its String to "Click Me" and its Tag to "btn1". Now you will see the screen like this.

Now Save this file.

Now Switch to MATLAB main screen when you will see the Tutorial1.m file is already open in Editor.

Now find below function in that file.

This function is Callback function For btn1(Push Button) component. When the Button will click this function will be executed. So here now what we want to do is When we click on Button, what ever we have written in Edit Box will be Printed on Static Text. Like this.

So for doing that we need to add two line of code at the end of Callback function of btn1 Push Button.

data=get(handles.edit1,'String');%This line will fetch the data from Edit Text Box
set(handles.text1,'String',data);%This line will printed the fetch data on Static Text.

Here get() function is used to fetch data from Edit Text whose Tag is edit1. And set() function is used to print data on Static Text whose Tag is text1. As you have might notice that what is "data". data is variable witch is used to store the value fetched from edit1(Edit Box).

So thats it. Save the file and Run it. You will see the Output.

How to Host Your Website from Home

Today I am here with one great tutorial. Today I will show you the way to start your own home server to host your website from home. It very easy and you can do with just few commands.

Here I assume that you have following configuration in your PC/Laptop.

OS: Ubuntu 10.04 or Later
Hard Drive: 50GB(Minimum)
Ram: 2GB(Minimum)
And good Internet broadband connection with speed atleast 1Mbps.

Note: We must require a modem/router to put your website online . (If you are BSNL broadband user u will most probably have the modem/router).

So Lets Break It Than!!!

Setp-1: First of we will need to install Apache sever. As we are going to make web server we need PHP,MySQL and Apache server, And in Ubuntu this can be easily available in one single package called "LAMP Server". So for to install LAMP server in Ubuntu in very easy way and with GUI so that those who are not comfortable with commands can install it with ease we will install on package called "Tasksel". If you are using Ubuntu 10.04 mostly this package is installed in it by default,but those who are using Ubuntu latest version will need to install it. So for that start your terminal with Alt+Ctrl+t, and write following command in terminal.

You will notice here that we are adding "sudo" before command to give it administrative rights, so it will ask for administer password. so enter it. It will ask you for permission to download contents from internet, Sof enter "Y" and press enter. Thats it now wait till download and installation finish.

Setp-2: Once tasksel is installed, write following command in terminal

enter administrator password if asked. and you will see following screen.

Find ans select "LAMP Server" by pressing space key.

And press Tab key to select <ok> and press enter.

when you press Enter you will see following screen. Let the installation finish.

In the middle of installing process you will ask to configure MySQL "root" user password with the following screen. Keep in mind that what ever password you will enter remember it very well. We will need that in further installation and also if you loss that password you cant retrieve it.

So we have installed "LAMP Server". So now we can check it that our server is working properly or not.
Open firefox(or browser you are using) and enter url "http://localhost" and u will se following screen. If you see this screen You have successfully installed you web server.

Step-3: Now we will install "phpmyadmin" as MySQL database GUI interface. If you dont know about phpmyadmin you can google it. So to install phpmyadmin write following command in terminal.

If it ask for password enter your administrator password.

Just enter "Y" and press Enter. and wait till installation finish.
Now as in the middle of the installation it will ask for to configure phpmyadmin with your serveer.

Select "apache2" and press ok.

Now it will ask to configure MySQL database with phpmyadmin.

First select "ok" and than "Yes". Now it will ask to enter password for root user. Enter the same password as we have enter in Step-2 for MySQL configuration. Enter the same password in bellow screens.

And wait for installation to finished. Thats it!. We have done here. Now we will check that phpmyadmin is working or not.

and Go.

Thats It you have install and configure your webserver successfully.

Step-4: Now we will put our server online. So it can be accessible from any where. Now I am going to explain for BSNL modem/router. But for others the mechanism is same. So lets do it.

First open you browser and enter "http://192.168.1.1" in url.
As you open this url you will ask for username and password. Now for BSNL modem generally username and password is "admin". Enter admin in username and password. and u will se tht you will be redirected to modem configuration page.
Now find tab name "Port Forwarding" from the left side bar. you can find that in under security tab mostly.

Now you must be wondering why we need this, because we are going to set up our port 80 for webserver communication using TCP to Outside world.(This is the easy explanation for you but in technical way its little complex.)
So click on Add. You will see following page.

Now select "Pre-Defined" -> "Server"-"Web Server" as show in above figure. Now we have to enter internal IP address to "Forward to host internal IP Address".

To get you PC/Laptop internal IP address type "sudo ifconfig" command in terminal.

And note down the "inet addr" of "eth0" . Here for me it is "192.168.44.130". Now enter this address in to "Forward to host internal IP Address" .

And click on Apply. Thats all you are done. now put your website content in "/var/www/" folder and thats it now you can access you website from anywhere.

Note: But for that you have to purchase one Domain name and configure it with your server. That i will explain in another tutorial.

How to Config your PC for Java Servlet and JSP devlopment

I will show you how to config your PC for Java Servlet and JSP programming.

I am asumming tha you have

OS-Windows 7
JDK 1.5 or later
Tomcat -version 7 install on your machine.
port number:1001

Setp1: Install JDK 1.5 or later and Tomcat 7.

Note: just dont forget to change the HTTP port nuber form 8080 to 1001 for avoiding port number config if you are using IIS for ASP.

Step2: now Once you have finished installation we are ready to go.Now we are going to check weather tomcat is working or not.For that first Go to "C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 7.0\bin" and run Tomcat7.exe. it will start your tomcat server.

Setp3: Now open your browser and type "http;//localhost:1001" and u will see a webpage like this.

Step3: Now we will write a small code for Servlet and will run it.

First create java file name Hello.java

Now put the class file Hello.class into

C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 7.0\webapps

                                                                    \ROOT\WEB-INF\classes\

Note:Here you have to create a folder name classes.

Now we have to edit web.xml file which is located at

C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Tomcat 7.0

                                                   \webapps\ROOT\WEB-INF\

in web.xml file put bellow code in between <web-app></web-app> tags.

    <servlet>
      <servlet-name>Hello</servlet-name>
      <servlet-class>Hello</servlet-class>
    </servlet>

    <servlet-mapping>
        <servlet-name>Hello</servlet-name>
        <url-pattern>/Hello</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>

Note:Here i have given my servlet name same as class name of Hello.java file

or say as name of java file.

now save web.xml file.

Now open your browser and write "http://localhost:1001/Hello"

And you will see Hello World! on your browser page.

so this is a short intro about how to config and run simple servlet.

Its very easy to fool Rapid Share server if your IP address is assigned by your ISP. Just follow these simple steps:

clean up IE or netscape cookie( In this case the one that belong to rapidshare website)

On Command prompt

type -----> ipconfig /flushdns <---Enter
type -----> ipconfig /release <---Enter
type -----> ipconfig /renew <---Enter
type -----> exit <--------Enter

Or save these commands in a bat file and run it everytime you need to fool Rapidshare server.Remember to clean up rapidshare cookie in your temp Internet files folder.

Now you should be ready to download as many files as you want from their server.

How To Create a .bat file....

Open notepad
than copy following in notepad

          ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
          exit
     3. Save file with any name and as .bat

Create a Shortcut to Lock Your Computer!!!

Leaving your computer in a hurry but you don’t want to log off? You can double-click a shortcut on your desktop to quickly lock the keyboard and display without using CTRL+ALT+DEL or a screensaver.

To create a shortcut on your desktop to lock your computer:

Right-click the desktop.
Point to New, and then click Shortcut.

The Create Shortcut Wizard opens. In the text box, type the following:
rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

Click Next.

Enter a name for the shortcut. You can call it "Lock Workstation" or choose any name you like.

Click Finish.

You can also change the shortcut's icon (my personal favorite is the padlock icon in shell32.dll).

To change the icon:

Right click the shortcut and then select Properties.
Click the Shortcut tab, and then click the Change Icon button.

In the Look for icons in this file text box, type:
Shell32.dll.

Click OK.

Select one of the icons from the list and then click OK

You could also give it a shortcut keystroke such CTRL+ALT+L. This would save you only one keystroke from the normal command, but it could be more convenient.

FireFox Speed Tweak

Yes, firefox is already pretty damn fast but did you know that you can tweak it and improve the speed even more?

That's the beauty of this program being open source.
Here's what you do:
In the URL bar, type “about:config” and press enter. This will bring up the configuration “menu” where you can change the parameters of Firefox.

Note that these are what I’ve found to REALLY speed up my Firefox significantly - and these settings seem to be common among everybody else as well. But these settings are optimized for broadband connections - I mean with as much concurrent requests we’re going to open up with pipelining… lol… you’d better have a big connection.

Double Click on the following settins and put in the numbers below - for the true / false booleans - they’ll change when you double click.

One more thing… Right-click somewhere on that screen and add a NEW -> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0”. This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. Since you’re broadband - it shouldn’t have to wait.

10 reasons why PCs crash U must Know

Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy," it says. "Enter to return to Windows or press Control-Alt-Delete to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications."

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1) Hardware conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Often if a device has a problem a yellow '!' appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as 'IRQ holder for PCI steering'. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com. If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2) Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3) BIOS settings
Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer's display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to 'yes' to allow Windows to do this.).

4) Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).

Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

5) Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors
Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.

These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.

If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).

Look up your video card's manufacturer on the internet and search for the most recent drivers for it.

6) Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.

A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file. DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your antivirus software manufacturer.

An excellent antivirus programme is McAfee VirusScan by Network Associates ( www.nai.com). Another is Norton AntiVirus 2000, made by Symantec ( www.symantec.com).

7) Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.

Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer's performance.

If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer's default settings and you may be able to carry on.

8) Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.

The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don't do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from www.jv16.org

Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message "Starting Windows" press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.

Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn't work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.

9) Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.

One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the CPU. Specialist cooling fans/heatsinks are available from www.computernerd.com .CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should also be more stable.

10) Power supply problems

With all the new construction going on around the country the steady supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can crash a computer as easily as a power cut.

If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a uninterrupted power supply (UPS). This will give you a clean power supply when there is electricity, and it will give you a few minutes to perform a controlled shutdown in case of a power cut.

It is a good investment if your data are critical, because a power cut will cause any unsaved data to be lost.
