Problem

We had built website in MVC3 before 1 year and deployed on IIS 6. It was tested with all browsers like IE (7,8,9,10), Firefox and Google Chrome. All function are running perfectly.

Yesterday we noticed weird problem with IE 11. User can't login to site on IE 11. Then again we checked with all browsers but this problems is occurred with IE 11 only.

After goggling and reads blogs we find solution for same. We changed below source in web.config

Solution

<authentication mode="Forms">
  <forms loginUrl="~/YourLoginUrl" timeout="2880" cookieless="UseCookies" />
</authentication>

We have add cookieless="UseCookies" to forms tag and problems is resolved.

We like to know Why it is happened?

The problem rests with some IIS instances thinking that IE11 is a cookieless browser (i.e. cant support cookies). In our problem case the server was setting the authentication cookie and sending it back to the browser, but was then ignoring the cookie on subsequent requests.

The solution is to either patch the browser capabilities so that it knows IE11 can do cookies (outlined in another answer on this page), or change the default behavior to force it to use cookies even if it thinks the browser can’t do cookies.

So, We need to just added the following to our forms section in web.config:
cookieless="UseCookies"

Reference :

This topic contains information about key features and improvements in the .NET Framework 4.5 Developer Preview. This topic does not provide comprehensive information and is subject to change.

New features and improvements are described as per bellow.

.NET for Metro style apps

Metro style apps are designed for specific form factors and leverage the power of the Windows operating system. A subset of the .NET Framework is available for building Metro style apps for Windows using C# or Visual Basic. This subset is called .NET APIs for Metro style apps. For more information about this subset.

Core New Features and Improvements

The following features and improvements were added to the common language runtime and to .NET Framework classes:

Ability to limit how long the regular expression engine will attempt to resolve a regular expression before it times out.

Ability to define the culture for an application domain.

Console support for Unicode (UTF-16) encoding.

Support for versioning of cultural string ordering and comparison data.

Better performance when retrieving resources.

Zip compression improvements to reduce the size of a compressed file.

Ability to customize a reflection context to override default reflection behavior through the CustomReflectionContext class.

Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF)
The Managed Extensibility Framework (MEF) provides the following new features:

Support for WebSockets protocol.

Support for reading and writing HTTP requests and responses asynchronously.

Support for asynchronous modules and handlers.

Support for content distribution network (CDN) fallback in the ScriptManager control.

Networking

The .NET Framework 4.5 Developer Preview provides a new programming interface for HTTP applications. For more information, see the new System.Net.Http and System.Net.Http.Headers namespaces. Also, the following networking improvements are included in the System.Net, System.Net.Mail, and related namespaces:

Improved internationalization and IPv6 support.

RFC-compliant URI support.

Support for Internationalized Domain Name (IDN) parsing.

Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF)

In the .NET Framework 4.5 Developer Preview, Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) contains changes and improvements in the following areas:

The new Ribbon control, which enables you to implement a ribbon user interface that hosts a Quick Access Toolbar, Application Menu, and tabs.

The new INotifyDataErrorInfo interface, which supports synchronous and asynchronous data validation.

New features for the VirtualizingPanel and Dispatcher classes.

Improved performance when displaying large sets of grouped data, and by accessing collections on non-UI threads.

Data binding to static properties, data binding to custom types that implement the ICustomTypeProvider interface, and retrieval of data binding information from a binding expression.

Repositioning of data as the values change (live shaping).

Better integration between WPF and Win32 user interface components.

Ability to check whether the data context for an item container is disconnected.

Ability to set the amount of time that should elapse between property changes and data source updates.

Improved support for implementing weak event patterns. Also, events can now accept markup extensions.

Windows Communication Foundation (WCF)

In the .NET Framework 4.5 Developer Preview, the following features have been added to make it simpler to write and maintain Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) applications:

Simplification of generated configuration files.

Support for contract-first development.

Ability to configure ASP.NET compatibility mode more easily.

Changes in default transport property values to reduce the likelihood that you will have to set them.

Updates to the XmlDictionaryReaderQuotas class to reduce the likelihood that you will have to manually configure quotas for XML dictionary readers.

Validation of WCF configuration files by Visual Studio as part of the build process, so you can detect configuration errors before you run your application.

New asynchronous streaming support.

New HTTPS protocol mapping to make it easier to expose an endpoint over HTTPS with Internet Information Services (IIS).

Ability to generate metadata in a single WSDL document by appending ?singleWSDL to the service URL.

Websockets support to enable true bidirectional communication over ports 80 and 443 with performance characteristics similar to the TCP transport.

Support for configuring services in code.

XML Editor tooltips.

ChannelFactory caching support.

Binary encoder compression support.

Windows Workflow Foundation (WF)

Several new features have been added to Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) in the .NET Framework 4.5 Developer Preview. These new features include:

Ability to create state machine workflows.

Enhanced Workflow Designer features such as the following:

Enhanced workflow search capabilities in Visual Studio, including Quick Find and Find in Files.

Ability to automatically create a Sequence activity when a second child activity is added to a container activity, and to include both activities in the Sequence activity.

Panning support, which enables the visible portion of a workflow to be changed without using the scroll bars.

A new Document Outline view that shows the components of a workflow in a tree-style outline view and lets you select a component in the Document Outline view.

Ability to add annotations to activities.

Ability to define and consume activity delegates by using the workflow designer.

Auto-connect and auto-insert for activities and transitions in state machine and flowchart workflows.

Storage of the view state information for a workflow in a single element in the XAML file, so you can easily locate and edit the view state information.

A NoPersistScope container activity to prevent child activities from persisting.

Support for C# expressions:

Workflow projects that use Visual Basic will use Visual Basic expressions, and C# workflow projects will use C# expressions.

C# workflow projects that were created in Visual Studio 2010 and that have Visual Basic expressions are compatible with C# workflow projects that use C# expressions.

Versioning enhancements:

The new WorkflowIdentity class, which provides a mapping between a persisted workflow instance and its workflow definition.

Side-by-side execution of multiple workflow versions in the same host, including WorkflowServiceHost.

In Dynamic Update, the ability to modify the definition of a persisted workflow instance.

Contract-first workflow service development, which provides support for automatically generating activities to match an existing service contract.

Crescent is interactively visualizing data, quickly analytical insights, and generally having fun with data!

Crescent is reporting services’ new tool targeted at data consumers to visually explore their data, answer ad-hoc questions with ease, and to present and collaborate with others in a SharePoint environment. Crescent is a thin browser experience and is working against a BI Semantic Model. BI Semantic Model is available on the client through the Excel-based Power Pivot modeling tool, or on the server through Analysis Services Tabular project with Denali CTP3.

Self Service Alerting

SharePoint Shared Service

Excel rendering as XLSX, Word rendering as DOCX

BI Development Studio integrated in Visual Studio 2010

Not only did we adopt the Visual Studio 2010 shell for BI Development Studio for report design, but we also re-architected our integration with Visual Studio in general for RDLC designer and report viewer controls. This will be available with the upcoming next version of Visual Studio and enable much more simultaneous availability of SQL Server Reporting Services functionality in Visual Studio as well.

The feature pack for SQL Server “Denali” CTP3 is available here.

In Data-driven application or website, dynamic sorting is common need. Ideally we should write stored procedure for dynamic sorting.

We found nice solution for above problem. Bellow stored procedure fetch ordered data with passed parameter. There two parameters for dynamic sorting stored procedure. Parameter
@sortDirection
pass for order direction (
asc
or
desc
). Second parameter
@sortCol
for pass sorting field name.

MVP pattern is one of the major patterns used for extracting business logic outside of UI elements and by that, enabling unit testing the UI without the need for using specific UI based testing tools.
As technologies such as ASP.NET and Windows® Forms become more and more powerful, it's common practice to let the UI layer do more than it should. Without a clear separation of responsibilities, the UI layer can often become a catch-all for logic that really belongs in other layers of the application. One design pattern, the Model View Presenter (MVP) pattern, is especially well suited to solving this problem.

For follow MVP pattern, we divide whole solution in 3 different project as per bellow.

MVP Structure

Model Project (Class Library) :

DAL Classes (Data Access Layer):

Exchange data between your business objects, the DAL and vice versa.

All interaction between your business objects and the DAL occurs by calling data access methods in the DAL from code in your business objects.

The method parameters and return values in the DAL are all database independent to ensure your business objects are not bound to a particular database.

BAL(Business Access Layer) Classes:

BAL contains business logic, validations or calculations related with the data.

Responsibility is to validate the business rules of the component and communicating with the Data Access Layer.

Business Logic Layer is the class in which we write functions that get data from Presentation Layer and send that data to database through Data Access Layer.

Presenter Project (Class Library):

Presenter Class:

Orchestrates the overall interaction of the other components within the application.

Roles include the creation of the appropriate Models, Selections, Commands, Views, and Iterators, and directing the workflow within the application.

View Interface:

Interface class use for bridge between presenter class and View.

Define all properties and method related to UI(User Interface).

View Interface:

View project may be possible asp.net website, Silverlight application, WPF application or windows form application.

View contains only User interface of application. It contains user controls and forms for application. The View is the visual representation of the Model and is comprised of the screens and widgets used within an application.

Integrators are components which address how user events are mapped onto operations performed on the Model, such as mouse movements, keyboard input, and the selection of checkboxes or menu items.
Null coalesce operator (??) was a very nice feature of C# 2.0. Null coalesce converts nullable type to non-nullable type. The ?? operator uses to define a default value for nullable type. For that in previous version of C#, we have to right like as bellow.

long lngMarks;
long lngAvg = (lngMarks == null ? 0 : lngMarks) / 6;

In above case, we use ternary operator(?) for check, value is null or not. Now it is more easy with Null Coalesce operator (??). We can use the Null - Coalesce Operator (??) as a shortcut for that expression, as shown here:

long lngMarks ;
long lngAvg = (lngMarks??0) /6;

Null coalesce operator(??) is a very small but very useful feature of C# 2.0.

Extension method is introduced by Microsoft in .Net 3.5. With help of extension method, developer can extend any class without change in original source code. Extension methods are static methods that can appear to be part of a class without actually being in the source code for the class. So extension method is one of the richest feature of .net 3.5.

Here I create class for string validation which extends string class. With help of bellow class we can validate some regular string validation like email, password , numeric etc. It provide facility to validate your own custom regular expression.

Code

using System;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using System.Linq;
using System.Text;
using System.Text.RegularExpressions;

namespace validation
{
    public static class StringValidationWithExtension
    {

         //built in regular expresssion
Hello friends,

On channel 9, I found nice video from John Papa, which is describe how to create icon ,splash screen with Microsoft Expression Designer. With help of this video, developer can easily create there own icon and splash screen for custom application. It is really very nice video. It helps to developer stencil icon and splash screen very fast and effective way.

Array can combine objects which have same type, but some time we need to combine objects which have different types. For that in Framework 4.0, Microsoft introduces new feature Tupel. Tuple provides facility to combine of different type of object in one object. Tupel is derived from programing language such as F# or like Haskell in Python. With .NET 4 , Tupel is available for all .NET languages.

Example

namespace ConsoleApplication1
{
    class Program
    {
        static void Main(string[] args)
        {
            //get age from passed birthdate
           Tuple<int,int,int> age = calculateAge(new DateTime(1982,4,4));
            //Tuple value can access with age.Item1.........
           Console.WriteLine("Age {0} years, {1} months, {2} days", age.Item1, age.Item2, age.Item3);
           Console.ReadKey();
            //create tuple with static function "Create" of Tuple class
            return Tuple.Create<int, int, int>(ageInYears, ageInMonths, ageInDays);
        }
    }
}
/*----------------------------------------------------------------------
Output
Age 29 years, 3 months, 8 days
------------------------------------------------------------------------
*/

In .NET 4, we can define 8 generic Tuple. Tuple can create with static function
Create
of Tuple class. In case more than 8 element in Tuple we should use nested Tuple within Tuple defination at last element of Tuple. Last parameter named as
TRest
. You must pass
TRest
a Tuple itself. Otherwise it throws
ArgumentException
exception. Finally, the functionality of Tuple as bellow :

Public class Tuple<t1,t2,t3,t4,t5,t6,t7,trest>

Example of more than 8 element

var obj = Tuple.Create<string,string,string,int,int,int,double,Tuple<int,DateTime>>("Ram","Laxman","Bhrat",500,2,85,1.37,Tuple.Create<int,DateTime>(65,"27-Jan-2004"));

In above example, you can see last parameter is Tuple type itself. Hence, with this meathod we can create a Tuple any numbers of items.

Think of it as a cyberspace land rush, as companies and others try to stake claims to websites ending with names like ".bank"

Come next year, an era when site names ended in a handful of predictable ways like ".com" or ".gov" draws to a close. ICANN, which stands for the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, says it will accept applications for domains with new suffixes that could range from corporate names (like ".Apple" or ".Sony") to more generic terms (like ".bank" or ".supermarket").

Don't expect that all those ".com" sites will simply fade away, or that every celebrity will start a site with a name like "Lady.Gaga." Some pop stars may try to do that, but ICANN has made the process of launching a new suffix cumbersome and costly, to put some limits on the proliferation of web suffixes.

What's certain, though, is that companies and other entities will now be thinking hard about the new "your-name-here" opportunity. And on the flip side, they'll be pondering the potential risks of not joining the stampede.

Web experts have said that ICANN’s proposals, to essentially open up a new online market-place, where new addresses are available for those brands and individuals who have lost their identity online in the first and second wave of the web, could be significant.

It will cost £162,000 to apply, and individuals or organizations will be asked to show a legitimate claim to the name they are buying.

Credit: Material from the Telegraph and Wire Services were used in this article.

Extension method for IComparable

Extension method for IComparable

C# 3.0 gives great feature of extension method. I am also very much interested for Extension method. Today, My friend Divyang posts very useful topic "Extension Meathod for IComparable". I would like to share you something interesting way to use
that extension method. This time it's extending IComparable. The API signature for IComparable<T>
has been around since the birth of C language . If the left is less
than the right, return something less than 0, if left is greater than
right, return something greater than 0, and if they are equivalent,
return 0. Well, its readability leaves a bit to be desired.

So Here we have set of extension methods for any type T that implements IComparable:

public static class Hitech.Helper.EquatableExtensions
{

    public static bool GreaterThan(this T left, T right) where T : IComparable<T>
    {
        return left.CompareTo(right) > 0;
    }

    public static bool LessThan(this T left, T right) where T : IComparable<T>
    {
        return left.CompareTo(right) < 0;
    }

    public static bool GreaterThanOrEqual(this T left, T right) where T : IComparable<T>
    {
        return left.CompareTo(right) >= 0;
    }

    public static bool LessThanOrEqual(this T left, T right) where T : IComparable<T>
    {
        return left.CompareTo(right) <= 0;
    }

    public static bool Equal(this T left, T right) where T : IComparable<T>
    {
        return left.CompareTo(right) == 0;
    }
}

<t><t><t><t><t></t></t></t></t></t>

These methods mean I can write this:

if (obj1.GreaterThan(obj2))

instead of

if (obj1.CompareTo(obj2) > 0)

personally, I find the former much easier to read.
Ok, this is not rocket science, but it's useful, and it improves the readability of quite a bit of the code I work with on a day to day basis.

What is GUID ?

A GUID is a 128-bit integer that can be used to uniquely identify something. You may store as primary key in your database. A common approach is to create a auto incrementing integer, another way would be to create a GUID for your field.

GUIDs can be generated in a number of ways; most often a hash of
several things that might be unique at any given point in time like the IP
address plus the clock date/time etc are used to generate Unique Ids.
Each system may have slightly different algorithm to generate the Unique
Id.

How to create GUID in C#?

In C#,
System.GUID
class represents a GUID in .NET Framework. System.GUID has static method
NewGuid()
, which generates a new Guid.

Example

// This code example demonstrates the Guid.NewGuid() method.

using System;

class Sample
{
    public static void Main()
    {
    Guid g;
// Create and display the value of two GUIDs.
    g = Guid.NewGuid();
    Console.WriteLine(g);
    Console.WriteLine(Guid.NewGuid());
    }
}

/*
This code example produces the following results:

0f8fad5b-d9cb-469f-a165-70867728950e
7c9e6679-7425-40de-944b-e07fc1f90ae7

*/

GUID.Empty

As the Guid structure cannot be set to null, a value must be used to represent an ID that is not set. For that, GUID.Empty
is a read-only instance of the GUID class whose value is guaranteed to be all zeros( 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000 ). This is the same value that is generated by the parameter-less constructor. In order that a new Guid structure is not created every time a value must be compared with the empty GUID, the structure provides the Empty property. This property is read-only and always returns an empty GUID.

Example

// This code example demonstrates the Guid.NewGuid() method.

using System;

class Sample
{
    public static void Main()
    {
    Guid guidObj = new GUID();

// Compare with guidObj with GUID.Empty

    Console.WriteLine(guidObj == GUID.Empty); // Returns true

// Assign New GUID to guidObj
    guidObj = Guid.NewGuid();

// Again, compare with guidObj with GUID.Empty
    Console.WriteLine(guidObj); // Returns false

    }
}

GUID string formatting

As with all objects and structures, the GUID can be converted to a string using the
ToString
method. If the method is used without parameters, the GUID is formatted as a simple series of hexadecimal digits in the five groups described earlier.

The format of the converted string can be modified using a format specifier.
This is passed as a string parameter to the
ToString
method.

The available format specifiers are listed in the table below.The format parameter can be "N", "D", "B", "P", or "X". If format is null or an empty string (""), "D" is used.
The following table shows the accepted format specifiers for the format parameter. "0" represents a digit; hyphens ("-"), braces ("{", "}"), and parentheses ("(", ")") appear as shown.

of eight hexadecimal values that is also enclosed in braces:

{0x00000000,0x0000,0x0000,{0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00}}

Example

Console.WriteLine(Guid.Empty.ToString("N")); //00000000000000000000000000000000
Console.WriteLine(Guid.Empty.ToString("D"));  //00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000
Console.WriteLine(Guid.Empty.ToString("B")); //{00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000}
Console.WriteLine(Guid.Empty.ToString("P")); //(00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000)
Console.WriteLine(Guid.Empty.ToString("X")); //{0x00000000,0x0000,0x0000,{0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00,0x00}}

How to use in Microsoft SQL Server

We can generate GUID in Sql Server with the help of NEWID() function.

            Introduction

For programmes, Windows Phone 7 is also exciting, for it supports two popular
        and modern
Programming platforms: Silverlight and XNA.

            Silverlight

A spinoff of the client-based Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) has already
        given Web programmers unprecedented power to develop sophisticated user interfaces
        with a mix of traditional controls, high-quality text, vector graphics, media, animation,
        and data binding that run on multiple platforms and browsers. Windows Phone 7 extends
        Silverlight to mobile devices.

Generally you’ll choose Silverlight for writing programs you might classify as applications
        or utilities. These programs are built from a combination of markup and code. The
        markup is the Extensible Application Markup Language, or XAML and pronounced “zammel”.
        The XAML mostly defines a layout of user-interface controls and panels. Code-behind
        files can also perform some initialization and logic, but are generally relegated
        to handling events from the controls. Silverlight is great for bringing to the Windows
        Phone the style of Rich
Internet Applications (RIA), including media and the Web. Silverlight for Windows
        Phone is a version of Silverlight 3 excluding some features not appropriate for
        the phone, but compensating with some enhancements.

            XNA

The three letters stand for something like “XNA is Not an Acronym” is Microsoft’s
        game platform supporting both 2D sprite-based and 3D graphics with traditional game-loop
        architecture. Although XNA is mostly associated with writing games for the Xbox
        360 console, developers can also use XNA to target the PC itself, as well as Microsoft’s
        classy audio player, the Zune HD.

XNA is primarily for writing high-performance games. For 2D games, you define sprites
        and backgrounds based around bitmaps; for 3D games you defi ne models in 3D space.
        The action of the game, which includes moving graphical objects around the screen
        and polling for user input, is synchronized by the built-in XNA game loop.

            The Hardware Chassis

            Buttons

The front of the phone consists of a multi-touch display and three hardware buttons
                generally positioned in a row below the display. From left to right, these buttons
                are called Back, Start, and Search:

Back Programs can use this button for their own navigation needs, much like the
                Back button on a Web browser. From the home page of a program,
                the button causes the program to terminate.
Start This button takes the user to the start screen of the phone;
                it is otherwise inaccessible to programs running on the phone.
Search The operating system uses this button to initiate a search
                feature.

                    Screen

The initial releases of Windows Phone 7 devices have a display size of 480 × 800
                pixels. In the future, screens of 320 × 480 pixels are also expected. There are
                no other screen options for Windows Phone 7, so obviously these two screen sizes
                play a very important role in phone development.

Of course, phones can be rotated to put the screen into landscape mode. Some programs
                might require the phone to be held in a certain orientation; others might be more
                adaptable. You have complete control over the extent to which you support orientation.
                By default, Silverlight applications appear in portrait mode, but you’ll probably
                want to write your Silverlight applications so they adjust themselves to orientation
                changes. New events are available specifically for the purpose of detecting orientation
                change, and some orientation shifts are handled automatically. In contrast, game
                programmers can usually impose a particular orientation on the user. XNA programs
                use landscape mode by default, but it’s easy to override that.

Like many recent phones and the Zune HD, the Windows Phone 7 displays will likely
                use OLED (“organic light emitting diode”) technology, although this isn’t a hardware
                requirement. OLEDs are different from flat displays of the past in that power consumption
                is proportional to the light emitted from the display. For example, an OLED display
                consumes less than half the power of an LCD display of the same size, but only when
                the screen is mostly black. For an all-white screen, an OLED consumes more than
                three times the power of an LCD.

Because battery life is extremely important on mobile devices, this characteristic
                of OLED displays implies an aesthetic of mostly black backgrounds with sparse graphics
                and light-stroked fonts. Regardless, Windows Phone 7 users can choose between two
                major color themes: light text on a dark background, or dark text on a light background.

                    Input Device

Most user input to a Windows Phone 7 program will come through multi-touch. The
                screens incorporate capacitance-touch technology, which means that they respond
                to a human fingertip but not to a stylus or other forms of pressure. Windows Phone
                7 screens are required to respond to at least four simultaneous touch-points.

A hardware keyboard is optional. Keep in mind that phones can be designed in different
                ways, so when the keyboard is in use, the screen might be in either portrait mode
                or landscape mode. A Silverlight program that uses keyboard input must respond to
                orientation changes so that the user can both view the screen and use the keyboard
                without wondering what idiot designed the program sideways. An on-screen keyboard
                is also provided, known in Windows circles as the Soft Input Panel or SIP. XNA programs
                also have access to the hardware keyboard and SIP.

            Sensors and Services

A Windows Phone 7 device is required to contain several other hardware features
        sometimes called sensors and provide some software services, perhaps through the
        assistance of hardware. These are the ones that affect developers the most:

                    Wi-Fi

The phone has Wi-Fi for Internet access to complement 3G data access through the
                cell provider. Software on the phone includes a version of Internet Explorer.

                    Camera

The phone has at least a 5-megapixel camera with flash. Programs can invoke the
                camera program for their own input, or register themselves as a Photos Extra Application
                and appear on a menu to obtain access to photographed images, perhaps for some image
                processing.

                    Accelerometer

An accelerometer detects acceleration, which in physics is a change in velocity.
                When the camera is still, the accelerometer responds to gravity. Programs can obtain
                a three-dimensional vector that indicates how the camera is oriented with respect
                to the earth. The accelerometer can also detect sharp movements of the phone.

                    Location

If the user so desires, the phone can use multiple strategies for determining where
                it is geographically located. The phone supplements a hardware GPS device with information
                from the Web or cell phone towers. If the phone is moving, course and speed might
                also be available.

                    Vibration

The phone can be vibrated through program control.

                    FM Radio

FM Radio is available and accessible through program control.

                    Push Notifications

Some Web services would normally require the phone to frequently poll the service
                to obtain updated information. This can drain battery life. To help out, a push
                notification service has been developed that will allow any required polling to
                occur outside the phone and for the phone to receive notifications only when data
                has been updated.

            Windows Phone 7 Development Tools and Resources

Windows Phone Developer Tools

The basic tools you’ll need to start writing code for Windows Phone 7 are Visual
        Studio 2010 and Windows Phone Developer Tools (microsoft.com/express/Phone). The
        developer tools include Visual Studio 2010 Express for Windows Phone, the Windows
        Phone Emulator, Silverlight for Windows Phone, XNA Game Studio 4.0 and Expression
        Blend 4 for Windows Phone. If you already have Visual Studio 2010, XNA Game Studio
        or Expression Blend 4 installed, the developer tools will just update the applications
        with templates and other elements you need for Windows Phone development. Once you
        have the tools installed, start browsing through the MSDN Windows Phone Development
        documentation (bit.ly/fSYt8d). This is a crucial resource that you’ll come back
        to again and again.

App Hub

Next, head over to the Microsoft App Hub (create.msdn.com) and set up your account.
        App Hub is a community for developers of apps and games for Windows Phone 7 or games
        for Xbox 360. You can find tools, advice and the support of fellow app developers
        here. Plus, you’ll use the App Hub dashboard as the official tool for submitting
        your apps for the Windows Phone marketplace.
To register for App Hub you’ll need a Windows Live ID, and there’s a yearly $99
        fee for membership.

The first tools for Windows Phone development focused on C# as the coding language.
        But if you prefer Visual Basic, don’t fret. The Visual Studio team has released
        Visual Basic for Windows Phone Developer Tools (http://bit.ly/haiyqH), which allows
        you to dive right in. The team announcement even includes a tutorial for creating
        your first Visual Basic app for Windows Phone 7, walking you through the development
        of a simple tip-calculator app. No excuses now—get coding!

Windows Phone 7 for Absolute Beginners

Still not sure what to do next? Get yourself over to Channel 9 and check out the
        “Windows Phone 7 Development for Absolute Beginners” video series (bit.ly/fZJSqC).
        Clint Rutkus and Bob Tabor (from LearnVisualStudio.net) guide you through this series
        of 65 short videos covering everything from platform basics to debugging and error
        handling. You’ll even dive into details such as using the GPS capabilities of Windows
        Phone 7 devices.

XPF: A Layout Framework for XNA

General UI design and composition on Windows Phone 7 utilizes Windows Presentation
        Foundation (WPF) and Silverlight. But if you’re building games for the phone platform,
        you’re most likely going to be using XNA Game Studio (msdn.microsoft.com/aa937791),
        which uses different layout architecture. To simplify design under XNA, Red Badger
        has created XPF (bit.ly/dMAIOA), a layout framework for creating Windows and Windows
        Phone 7 apps with XNA. The XPF framework runs in a pure XNA application, yet was
        written to be familiar to WPF and Silverlight developers. There are 11 built-in
        controls, along with support for dependency properties, attached properties, animation
        and data binding. Plus, XPF is extensible to accommodate your own custom controls.
        It’s also worth taking a look through the Red Badger blog for additional tips and
        tricks for building and testing your Windows Phone 7 applications (red-badger.com/Blog/?tag=/wp7).

31 Days of Windows Phone 7

In the same vein as the Channel 9 videos mentioned earlier, Microsoft developer
        evangelist Jeff Blankenburg blogged “31 Days of Windows Phone 7” (bit.ly/dJ0u8k),
        writing a post every day in October 2010 that covers a different aspect of coding
        for Windows Phone 7. Blankenburg starts with the basic project template and works
        through topics including storage, UI controls, debugging, and even submitting your
        app to the Windows Phone Marketplace and integrating ads into your app.
Blankenburg’s blog is full of other Silverlight and Windows Phone 7 development
        tips, and the 31 Days posts have been translated into Russian and Spanish.
