So I'm in Sydney, Australia at the moment, having a great time.

I was just checking up on the site and I looked at my Google Analytics, a tool that tells me how many people are coming to the comic. It also tells me what search engine keywords people are using to find the site. Normally people search for "standard deviation comic" or something like that. Then I came across a search keyword I don't normally see:

"areola contest"

I hope he found what he was looking for.

Down Under

Well this turned out great. The bachelor pad is now complete with... furniture. The man-chairs and sweet couch came in. We also threw a fun little party on Friday. How much fun? At one point I found myself shaving someones head into a mohawk. Not quite sure how that came about.

Despite the massive hangover, I got THREE pages of JL finished, as well as several pencils and inks for upcoming pages.

This is good because as of tomorrow I'm taking a little walkabout, and going CouchSurfing in Australia. If you don't know what that means go read here and it will tell you all about how couchsurfing has changed the way I travel. Thats about it for me kids, take it easy!

I know you're all missing the Standard Deviation, but there just isn't time for me to do it myself.

However, if I get a trustworthy artistic volunteer with photoshop, I have some punchlines saved up. Getting Caught Up

Well, now that the prequel is over, we can put up the rest of the pages in order.

Introductory Flight Screening

Speaking of excited, I am currently in the pilot training supercenter in Pueblo Colorado about to begin IFS. We hit the ground running tomorrow so I'll keep this short. Don't worry, I'll keep up with the cartoons on the weekends. I'm lucky to have a great comic team working for me the rest of the time so I can focus on not washing out or crashing your tax dollars.

What do you do when you're stationed in a small town in the Midwest?

Brew your own beer. Our Amber Ale was bottled this weekend, ready for first tasting in a few weeks. In fact we are brewing the next batch, a Russian Imperial Stout, as I'm typing this.

Just thought you should know. Also, I've got training in Colorado for about a month. So if you're in Colorado, drop me a line! Unfortunately the SD might be pretty lax. But I have about 7 pages of JL about ready to go up.

Travelers Wanted

"We stayed with a sexual deviant in Austria. Crashed a graduation party in Munich. Slept overnight in a Venice train station with hundreds of other concert goers. Stood naked on top of a spa building in Linz. Got accosted by prostitutes in Barcelona. Were hosted by a 90 year old woman in a 200 year old mansion. Cheered for the bull in a bullfight. Watched police in riot gear clear the streets of Malaga. Swam the topless beaches of Nerja. Drank beer in a Bavarian brewery. Drank wine on a gondola in Venice. Ate gelato in the shade of the Coliseum. Ate kebabs everywhere. Painted up with the crowds for the championship of Euro 2008. Played hours upon hours of Egyptian Ratscrew. Used hundreds of free drink coupons. Won a t-shirt. And met some of the coolest people in the world.

The one thing we learned is that everything works out insanely well when you’re willing to make spontaneous decisions and stay flexible. The entire trip, airfare and train pass included, came out to be about $1500 per person. We were able to have a great time not because we planned a perfect itinerary, but because we were asking the right questions, such as: What’s CoushSurfing? Do I have to pay to reserve train seats? How do I find a last minute hostel? What’s an adventure shower? What’s the rule on boner-etiquette?

Hopefully these Cheatsheets can provide some useful tips and advice for your European adventure. We’re not going to fill a ten pound book with maps and restaurants and three star hotels. The best opportunities come from stopping and asking for directions." -Excerpt from the manuscript...

CodeRedComics is putting together a short book titled --The College Cheatsheet for Europe: Couchsurfing, trainhopping, and pubcrawling. Everything you need to know to blend in and get by on your Eurotrip-- The book will of course feature your favorite SD characters and hopefully the same comedy you've come to enjoy. If you have been abroad and learned a few pointers that would have been nice the first time around, send me an email. We are looking for talent to contribute a few articles, pictures, or cartoons. "Are your characters based off real people?"

As a comedian or cartoonist, I think it's most important to laugh at your own jokes. If other people think it's funny too, even better. For this reason I am probably my own biggest fan. Every few weeks I'll read through all my comics and laugh. I think I'm hilarious.

I've also found out there there are two different kind of readers out there. There is the first kind that discovers the comic and occasionally says "Man that's hilarious! How do you come up with this stuff?" and enjoy the cartoons for their creative and sophomoric humor.

Then there is the second, and probably far more numerous, group who knows me personally. They appreciate the full humor of these cartoons because they know that I don't make most of it up. Almost all of these events happened or were directly inspired by true events. These people were there for a lot of them.

Here are the answers to the questions I typically hear when someone new learns about this principle:

Did you really try to psychologically condition your girlfriend to music? Yes. Did it work? The results are inconclusive. Did you really swear in front of a large group of young children? Yes. Were you attacked by raccoons? Yes. Did you run like a little girl from said raccoons? Yes. Did you really threaten a toddler on an international flight? Yes. Are adventure showers real? You bed your sweet ass they are. Shirtless snowboarding? Don't fall down. Do you have a dog named Ruddy? Yes. Is he an alcoholic? Maybe not, but he did eat 15 whole chicken wings the other night. What is fireball? Tennis ball, rubbing alcohol, and a very real game of hot potato. Do you really make drunk faces at yourself? I am not alone...

My experiences cartooning has provided me with feedback that has led to some groundbreaking research in social trends, such as the following percentages of college students that:

Make drunk faces at themselves in the mirror - 15%
Have played padiddle - 43%
Also fear spiders - 68%
Have facebooked olympians: 26%
Guys who make boobs 'talk' - 8%
Guys who have 'masturbation problems' - 8%
Women who are offended when told
they have 'limones' - 54%

This is all the recorded data I have to date. I hope today has been both interesting and informative.

...Maybe I should write a book.

First off I want to say thanks to all the loyal fans who haven't given up hope, holding out hope for that day when greatness returns (not you Oscar). I think today is a fitting day for change.

I would also like to welcome our new inker JoeL to the Jovian Luck team. Adding some diversity to the already international team, he is ready to work hard and get things up to full speed. Considering we've never been at full speed, none of knows what's going to happen. Multiple pages a week? Anything is possible!

Lastly I want to explain why the prequel page(s) are injected into the middle of the Chapter 2. Originally I was going to use these pages as a prequel, but it makes more sense with the introduction written for chapter two, so I'm inserting them there instead. This will make printing the second issue much simpler as well. It might be a pain to read through at the moment, but it will smooth out soon enough.

Also the trailer will be done then which works well with the prequel pages. Check in next week for the next installment of Trip's hot ex-girlfriend!

Scripts and Storyboards

Finding an artist is harder than you think. But we finally have one.

Gary Welsh who has created the Book of Nemus, is now working hard on new pages. The comic is switching gears, with three prequel pages and (hopefully) an animated trailer. Here's a thumbnail so you know he means business.

And why not, here's some of his character sketches.

Hopefully I'll be able to post the work of all the other artist applications shortly. Stay tuned kids. We'll be back after the Winter Solstice.
