JavaScript from Null: Cross-Browser Event Binding | Nettuts+

In chapter five of this series, we jumped into the muddy world of event listeners. In that episode, we only got our feet wet; however, today, we’ll take things a step further as we implement a far more efficient solution. Along the way, we’ll learn a plethora of new techniques.

Quick Tip: Quick and Easy JavaScript Testing with “Assert” | Nettuts+

Years ago, I learned a deceptively simple “assert” function from John Resig, for testing your JavaScript. Amazingly, at barely five or six lines, this code provides a great level of power and control over your code, when testing. I’ll show you how to use it in today’s video quick tip.

Considering an (x)HTML5 Methodology :: Echo Enduring Blog

On Friday, I opened up my mailbox and was pretty stoked to find that my copy of HTML5 for Web Designers by Jeremy Keith had finally arrived, just over two weeks after having ordered it (pretty good coming from the U.S. to Canada). I immediately sat down and started reading it, and finished it up yesterday. There’s a lot of really great material packed into those few short pages and I’m not going to try to dissect it all here.

jQuery Plugin Checklist: Should You Use That jQuery Plug-In? - Smashing Magazine

jQuery plug-ins provide an excellent way to save time and streamline development, allowing programmers to avoid having to build every component from scratch. But plug-ins are also a wild card that introduce an element of uncertainty into any code base. A good plug-in saves countless development hours; a bad plug-in leads to bug fixes that take longer than actually building the component from scratch.

In this tutorial, I'll show you how easy it is to transform a basic HTML table into a profesionnal looking chart using visualize.js, a very useful jQuery plugin.

In the first installment of this three-lesson tutorial, we cover everything you need to know to begin developing database hubs. You’ll get instructions for installation on both Unix and Windows, and then you’ll learn some simple scripts that will insert information into a database and display that data on a web page.

CSS allow you to do lots of things, but some features are missing to developers. What about variable, constants, and general faster syntax? As normal CSS can't do that, people created preprocessors to allow the use of variables on CSS files and then parse it to regular stylesheets.

Thumbnails Navigation Gallery with jQuery

In this tutorial we are going to create an extraordinary gallery with scrollable thumbnails that slide out from a navigation. We are going to use jQuery and some CSS3 properties for the style. The main idea is to have a menu of albums where each item will reveal a horizontal bar with thumbnails when clicked. The thumbnails container will scroll automatically when the user moves the mouse to the left or right.

10 Interesting CSS3 Experiments and Demos

You’ve heard it plenty of times before: We’re at the precipice of a transition in the way we, as developers, do things. Leading the way are future standards like CSS3 and HTML5, both already partially implemented in 4 out of the 5 major web browsers, with IE9 promising support, empowering us as with new ways of making interactive and rich user experiences.

Word-Wrap: A CSS3 Property That Works in Every Browser

Okay, this is not exactly the kind of CSS property that’s going to be used in every design. But it is a very useful one when you need it, and some might say it’s much more practical than some of the fluffy new CSS3 features like transitions and whatnot.

Enhance Forms Using jQuery: 30 Tutorials and Plugins

Forms are very important part of any website, whether it is sign up form, log in form or comment form. These forms are source of interaction between your website and its users. For example if anyone is signing up on your website it will be his/her first experience working on your website and it is said “First Impression Is Last Impression”; if users see your sign up form very elegantly and creatively designed they will have good first impression about your website.

The absolute bare minimum every programmer should know about regular expressions - I’m Mike

Regular expressions are strings formatted using a special pattern notation that allow you to describe and parse text. Many programmers (even some good ones) disregard regular expressions as line noise, and it’s a damned shame because they come in handy so often. Once you’ve gotten the hang of them, regular expressions can be used to solve countless real world problems.

Seven Must-See Videos and Presentations for Web App Developers - Smashing Magazine

In previous video roundups, we’ve collected together some interesting videos and presentations from a variety of speakers discussing topics covering usability, graphic design, CSS frameworks, web standards, and more. In this small roundup, we’ve included seven videos that we think would be of great interest to web app developers in particular, with less focus on design and standards.
