A380 flies on alternative fuel

Test aircraft A380 MSN004 has flown between Filton and Toulouse with one engine powered by alternative fuel. The test, part of Airbus' research programme into alternative fuels, was run in collaboration with Shell International Petroleum and Rolls Royce.

The project is particularly important for environmental and economical reasons. Crude oil derived products are increasingly in demand and prices are rocketing. If it is possible to find a suitable alternative fuel, this could stabilise the market for the benefit of all. Secondly, some alternative fuels could be beneficial for the environment. It is Airbus' goal as a key stakeholder to support evolution towards a carbon neutral aviation industry. Alternative fuels may contribute to reducing our carbon footprint.

The tests were run on an A380 as it is the most modern aircraft flying today, however the fuel could equally have been tested on any Airbus aircraft. The alternative fuel used on the test flight was gas to liquid (GTL), which looks like kerosene, but is clear coloured. It is a natural gas, which has been cleaned and has undergone the Fischer-Tropsch process - the conversion of synthesis gas to liquid fuel.

The flight's goal was to see how the aircraft operated on GTL. Engine behaviour was observed as it was shut down and re-started in flight. Emissions will be compared with those of kerosene and the team will be using the results to predict the environmental benefits and define the next steps.

In researching alternative fuel, Airbus is looking for a drop-in product, meaning that it could be used in aircraft currently in service. It would equal or better the aircraft performance while offering environmental benefits. Airbus is hoping to establish what the best alternative fuel options are and how they will benefit the environment. As synthetic fuels are reported to have similar characteristics, whatever their original feedstock, this test was an excellent pre-cursor to research into biomass to liquid (BTL) fuels, should a suitable supply become available.

In order for an alternative fuel to qualify for commercial aviation, review and approval by the international Fuel Standards is a pre-requisite. Airbus is committed to this goal, and it is hoped that this will be obtained for GTL by 2013.

Hai rockers,

The show hidden files and folders may not work sometimes.If we selected Show hidden files and folders, and then apply the changes, that changes may disappear when we open the Folder Options again.

This happens may be due to some viruses.

You can clean the system using an effective Antivirus, and get back the normal situation.

If you want to show the hidden files before removing this virus, this method may work.

Steps:

1. Open Registry Editor ( Start > Run > regedit )
2. Get to this location:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
\Advanced

Now, in the right pane, double click open the entry name Hidden. Change its value to 1 and click OK.

Now close the registry editor, and look whether the hidden files are shown or not.

Careful!! don't change any other setting in Registry.It may harm your system...

Omar Sultan, chief executive of Dubai's Internet Service Provider "DU", said on Friday that an undersea cable had been cut in the Persian Gulf, causing severe phone line disruptions and making worse the already existing Internet outage across large parts of the Middle East and West Asia after two other undersea cables owned by the same British company were cut this week in the Mediterranean Sea 8.3 kilometers (5 miles) north of Alexandria, Egypt.Mr Sultan said that the incident was "very unusual." He said it was not known how the underwater cable, owned by British FLAG FALCON company, which runs between the United Arab Emirates and Oman, had been damaged. DU said in a press release that the cause of the incident "had not yet been identified."The owner of the FALCON cable, U.K. FLAG Telecom said the cable was cut at 05:59 UTC on Friday, 56 kilometers (35 miles) off the coast of Dubai and that a "repair ship has been notified and expected to arrive at the site in the next few days." The British company is also the owner of one of the undersea cables linking Egypt (Alexandria) with Italy (Palermo) that were sliced Wednesday in the Mediterranean Sea. That damage triggered wide Internet outages, hampering businesses and private usage across the Middle East and West Asia, and cutting off Iran "completely", according to reports.The only 2 countries that were unaffected were Israel and Iraq, the only two close Anglo-American allies in the region, both remaining completely unaffected by the cable cuts, leading to theories for the causes of the cuts, which have so far been given as having been caused by ships dragging their anchors across the cables. The fact that two rare incidents have happened in the same week, and both with cables owned by the same company, on either sides of Israel and the importance of the Internet to telecommunications and business, lends suspicion to the events.Agency reports state that a FLAG official in India, speaking on condition of anonymity because of company policy, said workers were still trying to determine how the Persian Gulf cable was cut. Earlier Friday, FLAG said that a repair ship was expected to arrive Tuesday at the site of the damaged cables off the coast of Alexandria, and that repair work would likely take a week, but gave no explanation why repairs would take so long.FLAG Europe Asia (FEA) is the world's longest privately funded submarine cable. FLAG Telecom owns undersea communication cables across the United States of America, to England, West Europe and the Middle East, onward to South Asia and the Far East, and again across to the United States thus spanning the northern world.Egypt's Minister of Communications and Information Technology Tarek Kamil on Friday said the reason behind Wednesday's cut undersea cable would only be determined once repair teams with their robot equipment reach the damaged cables.

Internet Cable May Take 12 to 15 Days to Repair

Updated: A consortium of telecoms are working to repair two cable cuts in the Mediterranean Sea near Alexandria.

Internet connectivity in Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia that was cut off or seriously impaired Jan. 30 by cuts to two undersea cables in the Mediterranean Sea near Alexandria likely will take 12 to 15 days to fully repair, eWEEK has learned.

The cause of the cable damage was still unknown on Jan. 31, but AT&T and a consortium of other telecom companies were working with international authorities to determine what exactly happened late on Jan. 30.

Patrick Yu, an AT&T media relations staff member in Hong Kong, wrote eWEEK via e-mail that the two cables are about a quarter-mile apart. One is operated by SEA-ME-WE-4 the other by Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Co., which is United Arab Emirates' second-biggest mobile-phone company, according to Yu.

"We have confirmed the fault location to be approximately 12.334 Km from Alexandria" in the Mediterranean Sea," Yu wrote.

"FLAG [Fiber-optic Link Around the Globe, a consortium of telecoms] has confirmed a sub-sea cable was cut at 8.3 kilometers" from a utility manhole on Alexandria beach, Yu said. This is in a similar location" to a cable cut reported earlier at 12.334 km, he wrote.

"FLAG has contacted its marine repair agency and is [processing permit applications] for the repair. Current estimate will be between 12 and 15 days for the cable repair to be completed," Yu wrote. Later in the day Yu confirmed that the necessary repair permits had been granted. But it will be Feb. 4 before the telecom consortium will be ready to start the repairs, he said.

"FLAG and SEA-ME-WE4 have activated their emergency repair process,'' EIT said in an e-mailed statement. "Given the proximity of the two systems, it is likely that one ship will do both repairs.''

EIT estimates that the cable disruption has reduced Web and telephone access in the affected regions to half capacity. The two cables carry about 70 percent of Egypt's voice traffic to the West, according to Yu.

Countries most directly affected are Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, Yu wrote.

"All traffic is being re-routed, so no one has been cut off, but might be experiencing some network congestion," Yu wrote.

Michael Coe, an AT&T media relations officer in New York, told eWEEK that "two undersea cables were cut. Multiple carriers use them. The consortiums are working to repair them," he said.

"AT&T was impacted on some routes in the Middle East, but the traffic is being re-routed," Coe said.AT&T officials had no explanation for what could have caused the cable cuts at two separate locations.

Third Undersea Internet Cable Cut in Middle East

Disruptions of this kind threaten modern business models

The third major deep-sea Internet and telecom cable outage in two days hit the Middle East Feb. 1, this time in the Persian Gulf. The outages have caused widespread disruption in both Internet and telecommunications voice traffic, and threaten to disrupt Internet-based business models the world over.

The cuts in the fiber-optic cable located in the Gulf off Dubai reportedly disrupted Web and voice access for customers using India-based cable network operator Flag Telecom, a company spokesperson told Reuters.

Service for most customers was rerouted to other cables, but slowdowns in service were widely reported, an AT&T spokesperson told FLAG (Fiber-Optic Link Around the Globe) is a 28,000-kilometer-long submarine communications cable containing optical fiber that connects England, Japan and many places in between. The cable is licensed by a consortium of telecoms.The cause of all three cuts was still unknown on Feb. 1, but AT&T and other members of the consortium were working with international authorities to determine what exactly happened."We're monitoring the situation, and have only seen a very minor impact on AT&T customers from this third incident," AT&T Media Relations Manager Michael Coe wrote in an e-mail Feb. 1.David James, a connectivity analyst with Ovum, wrote in his blog, "Despite their [the consortium's] best efforts, we can expect this accident to affect a large number of carriers and ISPs, who are reliant on the damaged cables, and this will in turn affect their enterprise and consumer customers in India, Southern Asia, the Middle East and, to a lesser extent, in Europe."Although there is a certain amount of routing diversity and some "spare" capacity on alternative routes, it does take time to reroute traffic through undamaged cables, James wrote. Not all digital data traffic is affected by outages like these.EDS, a global provider of IT and communications systems in 65 countries, told that the company has had no known interruptions of service to any of its clients around the world as a result of the Middle East disruptions. EDS, based in Plano, Texas, owns and operates its own private fiber-optic network to carry financial, medical and other business information around the world, Ray Thietten, EDS vice president of global networks, told. "We've been getting lots of calls this morning about this, but only two reports of service problems," Thietten said. "And both of those involved parts of the network that were out of our control."EDS' Global Services Network is the common physical platform for connecting all its Fortune 500 clients to about 500 EDS locations globally, Thietten said. "We do not rely on the public Internet for transmission of data or client information to countries around the globe," he said.EDS' network is completely redundant, with an MPLS (Multiprotocol Label Switching) backbone, Thietten said. "Geographically, we go from the Americas over into that area. If there is any kind of disruption on our network, we would quickly reroute all the data around the other side of the world—through our Pacific cable to the Far East," Thietten said.Fiber-optic cable is the only way to go with the kind of traffic EDS supports, Thietten said. "Satellites are too slow," he said.

Flag Telecom, the owner-operator of the cable, currently is part of the Reliance Group, India's second-largest telecom. Flag Telecom said in a statement on its Web site that its FALCON cable had been reported cut at 0559 GMT, 56 kms (about 35 miles) from Dubai on a segment between the United Arab Emirates and Oman.

Fourth undersea cable cut near UAE

For the fourth time in a week, an undersea communications cable has apparently been cut (or "failed due to a power outage," as some sources suggest), and while no official reports of subversion have surfaced just yet, things are beginning to get suspicious. Flag Telecom, a subsidiary of Indian conglomerate Reliance ADA Group, has had two cables damaged in the span of a week -- a quandary it has never dealt with until now. As it stands, traffic from the Middle East and surrounding areas is being routed through various other cables in an attempt to remain online, but any more snips and we could be dealing with ping times eerily similar to those seen in 1993 (or much, much larger issues).
