Asp.Net databound field shows   character when null or empty.

When working with gridview in Asp.Net one of the most common behaviour that is often seen is   in bound Field Columns. This is the case when datasouce is having empty string which is binded to the gridview.

Whenever in the datasource which is being binded to the gridview has empty string (""), it is mostly retrieved as  .

To address this, or if you need some default value instead of  , the BoundField class provided "NullDisplayText" property which can be used.

"NullDisplayText" Gets or sets the caption displayed for a field when the field's value is null. [as per msdn],

Even if the field value is empty string ("") and if you set "NullDisplayText" as " ", this would no more give you   as empty string ("") is rendered as  .

Therefore you do not need to put any additional checks in the code to handle  .

Explanation:

The above code for gridview has two BoundField's name and email. In one of the field which is "name" we are using NullDisplayText property and setting its value to " ". Due to this if the binded value from source comes as null or an empty string ("") it would give you " " value instead of   and hence would not require any special handling on code-behind for  .

The second field value on retrieval would display   if the binding value from source comes as null or an empty string ("").

Explanation:

Page Load:
In the code-behind code above, we have created a datasource which is having two rows of which one row has values and the other does not have anything. The second row for now has been assigned as empty string (""). null can also be used as well for testing.

Grid RowCommand:
In this event we are retrieving the value of cells for which the event is raised. For first row all would be well as we neither have null nor an empty string ("") for both cells.

For the second row both the cells have empty string (""). As we are using The NullDisplayText=" " for BoundField "name" we would get " " on retrieving the value, but for the BoundField email we would get  .

This is how we can avoid  . Also this is just an other way for handling  .

Accessing Server-Side Variables, Property In External JavaScript: C#

At times there may be a requirement to access the server-side variables in External JavaScript. To achieve the same we can follow the following:

The language used for server-side variable is c#.

For a server-side variable to be accessed in External JavaScript, the variable declared must be public.

Server-Side C# Code:

 public string strTempVar = "some value";

JavaScript Code:

This is how we can access a server-side variable in external JavaScript File. The variable strTempVarValue would now be accessible in external JavaScript.

The same can be used for accessing property as well.

window.close in Firefox

In our programming and scripting world we many times come across requirements that do not find a way out, and are finally pushed in a category of Issues that cannot be resolved.

Similar thing came to me this morning when i had to close a browser tab on clicking a link on the page.

No big deal ;)

Within few minutes i scripted something as under:

and then i called the JavaScript function in my page's html. All worked well.

It all started when i accidentally checked my page in Mozilla Firefox. With all tweaks and all irrelevant script code written there was no way out.

*Some scripts i tried by searching on web. all commented script is what i tried. Nothing happenned.

Then i came across few things that i had ignored, like window.close works only for browser windows that were opened using script, which means that you can close a browser window using window.close only if you had opened it using window.open. But nevertheless IE (Internet Explorer) is an exception.

I am not sure whether this is a loophole or is a functionality provided which any other browser does not have. In IE you can close a browser window using window.close even if it is not opened using window.open.

While searching i came across the following:

 dom.allow_scripts_to_close_windows

This is a FireFox pref in about:config file of FireFox, by default its default value is false and it does not allow to close a browser window using window.close if it is not opened using window.open.

If this value is changed to true, then it works fine. But i could not find a way to change it programmatically and more over no one would want an application to change his/her system's application settings.

On your local environment you can change this value to true and check. It works. You can access the pref as mentioned:

 1) Type about:config in the Firefox address bar  
 2) Look for dom.allow_scripts_to_close_windows [default value is set to false]  
 3) Double click this pref to set it to true.

This would allow the window.close for browser window not opened using window.open.

So this was some research i did and there was no option i could find to close the browser window in FireFox. If you guys have come across similar situation and were able to solve it, i request you people to please share the valuable information.

3- Member : - can view/add posts.

First Time Registration allows a user to be a member who can view and add post to forum.

Administrator can change a member account to admin/moderator account.
