This plugin will check your installation once a day against wordpress.org and notify you if there is a new version out.

Is your site protected?

Looks like a lot of WordPress blogs are getting hacked lately.
Considering the wide spread that this blogging / CMS software is getting, it is only natural that hackers will target it.

While these issues might raise some worries if you are new to WordPress, following some simple rules and guidelines can keep you out of troubles most of the times.

Let’s go thru some simple and basic steps everyone should be aware of.

Prevention is Key

The best way to protect your self from any kind of attack is to prevent it from ever happening. Many martial arts are based on this simple principle.

Keep your system updated and healthy. WordPress files, plugins and themes, everything should be up to date. Upgrading WordPress and all other plugins is the core of prevention.

Wipe out any unused plugins and files from your server.

Keep your plugin usage to the minimum ‘must have’ ones. This one also has many other advantages we will not touch this time.

Learn some more advanced methods to protect your site or hire a WordPress expert to it for you. Some of these methods might include techniques like using htaccess to block restricted areas like the WordPress admin.

If your site has already been hacked

Go for a clean and complete reinstallation and wipe out all traces the hackers might have left. Reinstalling over a hacked version is not recommended.

Remember: The key factor to protecting your WordPress site is keeping it always updated.

One last tip I can offer is to always have a good back up system running.
I highly recommend using a plugin like WP-DB-Backup for backing up your database regularly.

I was excited when Carl Ocab first offered me to join the development of his latest project – the Ultimate Blogging Theme

Carl Ocab is a very well known name in the “Make Money Online” industry and you can always find his famous blog carlocab.com on top of googles results for terms like “make money online”. Those of you who are familiar with seo and search engines probably know how hard it is to get on top of google results for such highly targeted keywords.

Did I mentioned that Carl managed to achieve all this before his 15th birthday?…

The Ultimate Blogging Theme is the latest project from Carl and from knowing it inside and out and working on it I can highly recommend it.

Each time a new version of a post or page is made, revisions are stored in the WordPress database. As times pass, the database might grow bigger and bigger.

Since version 2.6 WordPress presented a new feature to enable post revisions tracking.

Revisions let you track edits that has been made on posts or pages, compare the current version with older ones and revert to them if you want to.

Each time a new version of a post or page is made, revisions are stored in the WordPress database. As times pass, the database might grow bigger and bigger, putting more strains on your web server / host and at some point even start to slow down page serving. Some shared hosting providers limit your MySql space usage and will charge extra if you exceed the space they allocated for you.

Fortunately, WordPress give us the option to disable this feature if we decide we don’t want or need it.

All you have to do in order to disable post revisions in your wordpress install is add the following line of code in wp-config.php located in the root or home directory of WordPress.

<?php define(’WP_POST_REVISIONS’, false); ?>

Once you add this line, wordpress will stop creating any revisions.

I often hear people asking when they should start promoting their blog.
How many posts are enough for a start?

Some people like to have some “meat” on their blog and would not start to promote a blog until they have something like 30 or 40 posts on it.

Others start promoting from the minute they finish the installation process (well, almost I guess…)

Personally I like to go with the second method.
I see promotion as a long and never-ending continues process.
It goes across all of the life span of the blog.
I would start early as possible even if all I got is 4 or 5 posts.

It is very important though, that these 4 or 5 posts are KILLERS because you want people to come back for more.

Promoting your Blog is a very long process and it takes time to see results, so start doing it early as possible would be my best way to go.

When do you start promoting a new blog?

One of the mottos that always guided me thru my business life is “over deliver”.
There is no arguing about the fact that a happy and satisfied customer is your best advertising investment.

This is really basic.

Investing in your customer is one of the best investments you can ever make.

I can’t stress this harder. Always try to give your customer an extra bonus for doing business with you.

Differentiate your self from others.

Let your customers remember dealing with you as a pleasant experience.

Over deliver does not mean you should loose money.
You have to think of creative ways you can give your customer more than he expects and still being profitable.

This idea can be projected to the blogging world too.
Say you want to expand your rss readers.

How can you do it besides delivering great content to your readers?

One smart option could be to publish a special report that will be available only to your rss subscribers.

I know many bloggers achieved great results only with this little idea.

You’ll be amazed of how these little things can work for you.
