Good Morning,

I've been outside painting, taking workshops, framing for the upcoming artists tour and painting in the studio as well.

I absolutely forgot to post last week. It's been a really creative and busy time. I love the hot weather. Going out to paint with the sketch club is really good for me. Sometimes I come home with a small painting, sometimes I just come home with ideas. But it's all worth it.

Today, the finishing touches on my part of the artists tour and then hopefully more time at the easel.

Good Morning,

I've been working really hard, preparing for the art tour. Between that, workshops, sketch club, and the household items, I have neglected to show you some of my recent paintings.

This little painting is one I did recently. I have a few more to show as well as some works in progress. I have been playing a lot with my approach to landscape. I'm beginning to like them more when they aren't so realistic. This is just the beginning. I'm curious to see where the path will lead. I intend to follow it because it's fun. I enjoy the effort of seeing things differently and the results are satisfying.

Good Morning,

As I mentioned in my last post, I recently did a brief demo at the mill show. It was a very overcast day with the threat of rain. I managed to find a little birdhouse on the short wall at the entrance. It was a fun little painting. I had time to chat with people and this painting didn't need a huge amount of concentration.

Yesterday, (tuesday) was the first pleinair painting day for the sketch club. The location was excellent and I painted a small study. I hope to use it as a reference for a larger painting.
Perfect weather and a lot of cows.

It's been a busy time here. I did the demo at the mill and the weather was cloudy and ready for rain at any minute. I will be showing the little painting I did at another time. It was fun and a good time to begin painting outside.

Good Morning,

It's been a weekend of painting, exploring and experimenting. Somehow, I seemed to have channeled my inner Pierre Bonnard. I like this little painting, but it's a lot in a little space.

I'm going to take a couple of workshops from my friend Nataki McNeal Bhatti. She's teaching less about technique and more about the art spirit. I'm really looking forward to these workshops because I'm beginning to feel stale. I know Nataki well and think these workshops are going to be really good. I hope to come away with some new and fresh ways of thinking before I embark on a summer of plein air painting.

Tuesday is the demo at the mill.. I hope it doesn't rain..

Good Morning,

Yes, I've been working. I really want to have some good work for the show in June. Due to the economy, I'm focusing more (but not entirely) on smaller works. Some of my blog paintings are good enough to go in the show. You may have noticed that there are no paypal buttons on my recent paintings. That is because I'm showing them and I don't want to keep moving the buttons around. If you want to contact me for a painting, I'll gladly make a paypal button for you.

It's been very hot here and the studio is a good place to be. I plan to spend some quality time here today as I have some paintings that I started yesterday and they need some work. It's good to be working again. I am going to do some plein air work in May and I'm looking forward to it. The first one will be MAY 5 when I will be doing a demo at the Millwood show. If you have time to come out and visit, that would be very cool. We'll be painting outdoors if weather permits. It's a good show and a beautiful drive to get there. I hope to see you.

I had to take some time away from the easel and take care of some household chores. Now the flowerbeds are weeded and the garden is planted. My frames are on the way for the artist tour and I'm caught up on all the work.

This is my first effort and I must admit, taking time off isn't good for me. I need to work at it every day. That seems to be the only way my paintings improve.

Good Morning!

The painting above is from my trip south. I met a woman in Savannah who was weaving baskets. I found the strength in her hands amazing. In the morning light the whole process took on a beauty of it's own. This won't be the last painting of her.

It's been a very busy couple of weeks. With the holiday, garden, and various spring cleaning, this blog has been neglected. I apologize. I have been painting and mostly every day. I've submitted the paintings to the Millwood show, and am planning to do a demo there on May 5 with a friend. If you are anywhere nearby, please stop by and see the show and watch us paint a bit. I've also started planning what I intend to show during the Art Tour in June.

I'm trying not to wait until the last minute to put this together.

Upcoming shows

Good Morning,

I did a small painting, but not the photo so I can't post it.
It's been a very busy week around here with errands and guests and other things. I'm getting ready for my garden once again and just doing some spring clean up.

I've been accepted to 2 juried shows this spring. First, "Art at the Mill" in Millwood VA.
The show is from April 25 to May 10. There are hundreds of pieces in a very old historic mill. The drive out there is beautiful and it makes a good day trip. My friend and I will be doing a demo there, so I will have more on that later. I hope you will come to the show.

I have also been accepted as a guest artist on the Western Loudoun Artists Studio Tour. It is June 20-21. I will be located at Gallery 222 in Leesburg along with 4 other artists. I've posted the link on the sidebar here. Please check it out and join us for the tour. It's free and fun. I'll have more info as we get closer.

Today, I'll take that photo and get some art posted.

Good Morning,

When I was in Asheville, NC, I found a really interesting group of artists. The "River Arts District" was a place with a lot of studios and real artists making real art. Unfortunately, they make a lot of other things in the River Arts District... like biofuel and pollution. Asheville has an air quality problem as well. Still, I did find beauty in the area and a lot of artists seem to have discovered that beauty as well. I would like to go back there when I have more time.

I painted two small paintings of this teapot a few weeks ago. I really like both of them because they are the same pot yet very different. I posted the first one a few weeks ago. Scroll down

and you will see it. The difference is that I moved only about a foot and it was a little later

in the day. Although there was a lamp on, I was depending on natural light. Because

they are quick sketches, they really do look like different pots.

The ground on my canvas was also different.

Something to ponder over tea, I suppose.

Good Morning,

I got home late Tuesday. It was a good trip with a lot of photos to paint from.
I had the opportunity to do a bit of painting, a lot of exploring, a lot of photos.
I had a good time meeting and talking to people and saw a lot of interesting things.

This small painting is from one of my side trips on a dirt road as I was going from
Charleston to Savannah. There are a lot of side roads that just go "out there".
I took one of them and found this lake. I saw a lot of wildlife, swampland and
abandoned houses, mobile homes and cars.

Now, I've got to sort through the photos, find my paintbrushes (I know they're here, somewhere) and do the laundry. I'll paint again tomorrow.

Good Morning!

Im still on the road. This little computers apostrophe is in a very wierd place, so Im not using it. I apologize for the lack of punctuation.

I went all over the southeastern US and took photos and painted. I attended a greyhound get together in Georgia and visited a friend. Now, in North Carolina, Im on my way home. I managed to do 5 paintings. The one above is on gessoed printmaking paper. I do a lot of pleinair painting on paper because its easier to transport. The others are small and ride well in the car.
The painting above is 9 x 12 inches.

I hope to post more regularly since Ill be home tomorrow.

Good Morning,
I've been travelling for a few days. On Saturday, I was in Charleston, SC and met this painter in the park. His website is dabism.com and he was dabbing away. Using a tiny brush he was layering thick oil in very intricate details. He was interesting to watch. Saturday afternoon I moved on to Savannah, GA where I saw a lot of artists in the park near the river. There seemed to be an art/craft festival going on so I wandered around and I saw some really good paintings and artists doing charcoal portraits for hire.

I've been painting a little here and there, hopefully will post one of my own travel paintings in the next post.

Stagnation

Good Morning,

I'm writing from Charleston SC...
I was having problems with feeling stagnant in my art, so I decided to shake things up and take a road trip. I've never been to Florida, so I decided to travel to North Carolina and visit some artists in Asheville, then to Charleston SC and onto Savannah, GA.. I hope to paint while I'm travelling, but havent yet. I have been taking some photos to work from when I get home. I will post photos of paintings as they happen. Meanwhile, my posts will be sporatic for awhile. Thanks for bearing with me while I pull myself out of a rut.

Good Morning,

I've been working on some bigger paintings and I haven't shown any on this blog for awhile.

I was in St. Lucia a few years ago and was really amazed at the landscape there. Rain forest, ocean, mountains and a volcano all on a very small island. I hear it's becoming very commercialized now, so I'm glad I got to go when it was less of a tourist attraction.

Good Morning,

Life is returning to normal after all the festivities here. I've been painting again and finally finished the muffin painting. I like doing the studies because it seems to help with difficult passages.

I purchased a lot of small canvases for daily paintings. I usually stretch my own, but keeping up with all the small paintings for the blog is difficult and time consuming. I found a deal on 8 x 10 inch canvases that are gallery wrapped, so I picked up a number of them. Hopefully I'll get back to a painting a day for the blog as well as progressing on larger works. There are a couple of juried shows coming up that I have done well with in the past. I'm trying to get ready for them as well. So much to do.
