Good Morning!

It's been a long time coming, but I'm finally working again. Since it's been more than a year since I painted, I'm very out of shape. I've been working through some beginner exercises and painting some studies, but coming back from a break that long is difficult.

Since I moved last July, work on the house and studio has taken most of my time. I have been gathering photos and still life items to paint. Living in the high desert with a lot of space around me has yielded beautiful sunsets and rusty treasures. I take long walks and find the most unusual things. Like the thorny things in the painting above. I have no idea what they are.

Everything here is different. The light, the skies, the colors. I've been working on a few landscapes and have been trying to capture the colors here that are sometimes elusive.

I'm glad to be back. Daily paintings should follow. Thanks for waiting.

My New Studio

Good Morning, Neglected Readers,

Obviously I'm still not creating paintings. The earthship has been a lot of work. I am still painting walls, doors and everything else around here. This is a photo of the new studio. It's a straw bale building with a lot of windows, good light, good views and it's pretty big. All my paints are there, safely tucked away in boxes.

I''m getting really anxious to pull out those old canvases that I brought along and just do some small paintings. It won't be long now.

I've done most of the work on the interior of the building, but the outside needs some help.

So, if you are still following my daily paintings, please keep watching. They will return soon.

Painting the Earthship

Good Morning!

We finally made it to Arizona. Our new home is an earthship that is totally off the grid. It's in a most beautiful place. I have a gorgeous studio and the views are fabulous. The downside is that it needs some work. I'm painting alright. Walls, doors, trim, etc. We should be living there full time in a few months. Since I'm not painting, I hope you enjoy the photo above. I took it yesterday morning from my front yard. I can't wait to get into my studio!

Westward Ho!

Good Morning,

Although I completed 2 small paintings in the garage, they are now packed and going west with everything else.
We are all ready to go. I'll be taking some photos on the way in hopes of discovering inspiring subjects for paint.
The move is underway and I may actually have a brush and some paints in a couple of weeks.
I can't wait! I hope I remember how to paint something other than walls!

It's been a long time since I was able to post. Since we decided to move west, life has been upside down.
My paints and paintings have been packed away as I work on other things. I don't think I will be able to post until after the move, but if I can find some paint and a brush, who knows?

New Websites, New Look

Good Morning,

The last week or so has been a tough one. Boundless Gallery hosted my website, www.glynisberger.com and
www.de-yong.com. They gave a brief notice and then closed, leaving many websites down and a big mess. Since I had close to 200 paintings on these sites, I was frantic.

I discovered Fine Art Studio Online. It's a good place to host a website and they made it very easy for Boundless customers to change over. www.glynisberger.com is now hosted there. Check it out!

www.de-yong.com is hosted at xhibit. I did this because both places have similar programs and I wanted to test them both.

So, I have a new look on both pages and I'm trying to get caught up on other important things.

I was once again accepted for the WLAST exhibit this summer. Much painting to do.

Good Morning,

It's been so cold here and my friends in the desert are freezing right now, as well. I imagined the winter sunset above.

Because of the cold, I've been working with wool. Dyeing and felting is going really well. I started a blog for it: http://www.fuzzyfiber.com/

I was accepted for the WLAST tour again this year so I'm already getting started with that. The tour is in June, but there is a lot of preparation involved.

Boundless Gallery was a good place for art, buyers, and artists. I'm sorry to see it go. PLEASE NOTE: www.glynisberger.com is open again. I found a new provider and have been working like crazy on the new site. I expect www.de-yong.com to be back in action by next week!

Good Morning!

It's been a while, but I continue to paint. In the interest of diversity, I've been working with other media. Sometimes being at the end of the brush just doesn't do it for me. When I find myself finger painting, I know I need to do something more tactile. I've been working with mosaic and felt (not together). It's a good diversion and as a beginner, I'm learning new things.

Meanwhile, I'm back on schedule with the paint, so I'll try to have some new things posted on a more regular basis.

While I was in Georgia earlier this year, I saw this house. It was back in the woods, and so overgrown it was nearly invisible. It's a real contrast to the desert and even the mountains of the southwest. Amazing.

As promised, here is the second painting of the dock. As you can see things got a lot more colorful as the day progressed and the light changed.

The contrast of painting in New Jersey as opposed to New Mexico is amazing. I've been working on some of the New Mexico paintings. They certainly look a lot different. I'm also starting to notice changes in the way I'm painting. For months I've felt like I was floundering around. It seems now that I'm beginning to have more of a voice. Regardless, I'm sure having fun.

I'll begin to show those paintings soon.

Good Morning,

I've been painting a lot this week, working on large paintings from New Mexico and Arizona.

When I get them photographed I'll post them.

This painting of the dock is from the summer when I went to paint in New Jersey. It's a plein air painting. The morning light made the boards appear to be white. It was a good trip that yielded a number of paintings. In the next post, I'll show you the afternoon version of the dock. It's really good exercise to chase the light around the canvas. A real challenge.

"Las Vegas, New Mexico and Dr. Harapat.

Good Morning,

Yesterday, I was washing my face with the best soap ever. I just have to tell you about it.

While I was in New Mexico, I spent some time in Las Vegas. A wonderful town that is full of history and nice people. Wandering around the downtown area, I stopped into Mariposa Herb and Gifts. The owner is Dr. Dale Harapat, a naturopathic doctor, massage therapist, and really nice person.

The shop had everything! A large number of herbs in bulk, blends, teas, extracts, candles, crystals, and products locally made. I bought a really good soap made with goat milk and herbs and some salve which is wonderful. All locally produced and hand made. I was so impressed with this shop. It's now my favorite place to buy these things.

Dr. Harapat has a website and sells products online. His products are fresh and so inexpensive.

Check it out. It's a special place. For those of you in big cities, take a break and visit this site. If you get to Las Vegas NM, stop in and visit. You won't be disappointed. It was one of the highlights of my trip.

Good Morning,

It's been busy around here since I came home. Digging up the garden and preparing for winter.

Before I went to Arizona, I did a couple of paintings from my head. Memories, dreams, and whatever else was floating around in there. This painting is one of those. It was fun to just allow my imagination to take me there. When I did go to Arizona and New Mexico, there were a lot of places that looked like this painting.

Most difficult with the breeze blowing and the light ever changing. I must admit I had a good time doing these paintings. I even got a chance to go out in the boat!

Good Morning!

I have returned home from my trip west. I'm still exhausted from the trip, time changes, and from trying to re-enter my own space. It was a good trip, and I was fortunate to see a lot of places and meet some really good people.

I got lost on the Navajo Nation. The sun was going down, and I knew eventually the road was going somewhere and it would be ok. That sunset had to be the most beatiful one I've ever seen. It was spectacular and lasted a very long time. The camera couldn't do it justice and if I ever attempt to paint it, I hope my memory is good enough.

The experience made me think of this little painting. Although this is an eastern US painting, I hope you enjoy it.

Good Morning,

I have been traveling across Arizona and New Mexico. Yesterday, I arrived in Santa Fe. I took a trip to Jemez Springs and it was really beautiful. I will certainly have paintings from that trip.

Back in Santa Fe last night, I went out for a walk around the plaza. Friday evenings, the galleries open their doors at no charge from 5 to 8 pm. I went to the O'Keeffe Museum. The exhibit was just fabulous! The paintings were amazing. They are not as smooth as they appear in print and most are not as big as expected. There are a lot of watercolors and a couple of sculptures as well. This made the entire visit to Santa Fe worth it.

In addition to the paintings, there was a photo exhibit of pictures of Georgia O'Keeffe. Most were portraits by Alfred Stieglitz, but there were candids as well by other photographers. One particularly striking photo was by Ansel Adams.

I have been zig zagging through Arizona and New Mexico for over a week. I have two more days of exploration here in New Mexico before returning home to process the information I have gathered.

Good Morning,

First, I apologize for missent blogs, bad punctuation and any other flaws in my recent posts. I am on the road, using a tiny computer and have problems hitting the right keys.

A few months ago, I painted this scene, mostly from memory. Once in awhile a painting seems to just appear on the canvas like magic. This was one of those paintings.

Today while driving around Sedona, Cottonwood, Jerome, etc... I saw this same scene, numerous times. It occurred to me that I've seen it thousands of times and it is embedded in my subconscious. No wonder painting it was so easy.

Tomorrow, north.

I doubt there will be a post.. Very much surprised if internet is provided at the Grand Canyon.
