Mobile App Sales

Fab CEO Jason Goldberg has reported a record breaking 2012 Cyber Monday with $1.3 million in sales, up from $350K same day last year, and over 1/3 of these sales were via Fab’s mobile app.

“We saw record logins and purchases on iPad particularly,” said Goldberg. “For the first time, iPad and iPhone sales were almost equal. Previously we had been seeing more like 60% iPhone & 40% iPad.”

Social media also played a large role, with 20% of sales being traced back to social platforms.

• 65% of all social traffic came from Facebook
• 20% from Pinterest
• 5% from Twitter

Mobile devices are changing the way people shop, and not just in making their holiday purchases. A recent CMO Council report showed that more than 60% of guest at Four Season Hotel & Resorts check into the hotels using their iPad compared to zero three years ago. The Four Seasons LA even has an iPad in the room for guests.

Smartphones, and the mobile apps that power them, are moving into every aspect of our lives. Mobile app sales are on the rise, and if your company does not have a native mobile application you are losing revenue. This is not a trend, but a shift in how consumers get information and make a purchase.

Do you have a mobile strategy for your company, and how many mobile app sales are you missing out on?

Mimvi (OTCBB: MIMV) is leading the way in the mobile space with their cutting edge mobile app search and recommendation engine. The executive team announced this week that they are releasing a native Mimvi mobile app on Windows 8 Mobile exclusively for 30 days with Android and iOS to follow.

“We will be working with Microsoft on multiple fronts” said Mimvi founder Kasian Franks. Some people might be wondering why the Microsoft relationship is so important in a mobile world currently dominated by iOS and Android. Franks addressed this in a post conference interview with Seeking Alpha’s Daniel Todd, that the release of Windows 8, Mimvi’s discovery engine will ultimately allow users to search for, and run, mobile apps on the 400 million or so PCs running Windows out there.

It is more important than ever to have a mobile app privacy policy that users can find easily, actually, it is mandatory.

Mobile App Privacy Policy

The California Attorney General, Kamala D. Harris (D), has started to notify mobile app developers that are not in compliance with the California Online Privacy Protection Act of 2003 (CalOPPA). A letter was sent out stating that the mobile app developers have “30 days to conspicuously post a privacy policy within their app that informs users of what personally identifiable information about them is being collected and what will be done with that private information,” or face a $2500 fine for EVERY non-compliant mobile app that gets downloaded.

I also want to clarify that mobile apps do not need to be developed, or hosted on a web server, in California to be under the scope of the CalOPPA law. If the app is accessible to California residents, the mobile app must be in compliance and have a mobile app privacy policy that is easy for the user to find.

Kamala Harris even commented on United Airlines App via Twitter back in mid October. She stated it was a fabulous app, but then asked where the privacy policy was?

If you are a mobile app developer, or a company working with one, please make sure that your mobile apps are in compliance with the California Online Privacy Act. I can not stress how important this is in order to protect your clients, users, and company from possible fines and embarrassment by simply having an easy to find mobile app privacy policy in place.

I highly recommend that you make a habit of watching what California is doing as they lead the way in working hard to protect online consumer privacy.

With over 4 billion smartphones in the world, and 66% of them being owned by young adults, we need to be aware of what high risk mobile apps can do. Did you know that people already value their smartphones more than their wallets? According to Unisys, it currently takes 26 hours for the average person to report a lost wallet, but only 68 minutes to report a lost phone.

What can high risk mobile apps do?

81% steal your phone number to sell to advertisers

67% push unwanted ads and notifications that clutter your phone

43% capture your device ID to potentially hack your phone

37% place unwanted icons on your phone trying to trick you into downloading unwanted apps

With global malware and viruses on the rise by 580% in 2012, you need to make sure to always read and consider the permissions you grant mobile apps.

I also recommend that you download an Antivirus and mobile security app like TrustGo, Webroot, Lookout, or Sophos to protect against high risk mobile apps. They can add a layer of security by scanning your phone and SD card to find and remove the malicious content.

Check out this great infographic by TrustGo that shares some great facts about high risk mobile apps and how you can protect yourself from data and privacy attacks.
