The inaugural DEMO Africa event took place last October 24-26, 2012 in Nairobi, Kenya. It provided a platform for 40 of the most innovative technology products from companies across the African continent with the opportunity to launch before a global audience of investors, media, strategic buyers, C-level executives and other entrepreneurs. This was the first time ever that a DEMO event was hosted on the African soil.

Almost every success is preceded by being willing to quit something that is not working, potentially suck at a new job, and risk total failure. Mike, who has been in the tech industry for over 20 years and has started four start-ups to date, walks through several examples of quitting, sucking and failing from his own career as well as those of several well-known Silicon Valley entrepreneurs. He explains clearly and in great detail how our fear of failure manifests and is reinforced throughout our lives, but points out that regretting what you have not done is more common than regretting what you have done. Being a part of a start-up will undoubtedly initially mean spending a lot of time feeling that you are way in over your head and, due to being understaffed, that you are spending a great deal of time doing tasks that you are simply not good at. But the pros outweigh the cons: a feeling of camaraderie in the team, the speed at which you learn and grow and the fun and excitement that comes with being innovative and taking risks makes overcoming the fear of failure worth it. Michael Wolfe also helps answer how we know the difference between a “good” and a “bad” fail and how this model can be applied in your own career.

Start-up founders Deep Parekh, Dorian Selz, Daniel Moser and Sebastien Flury all take to the stage together with the director of Business Angels Switzerland Jan Fuelscher and moderator Dania Gerhardt to discuss finance and failure and the personal points of views of investors and entrepreneurs when it comes to funding start-ups. Some points addressed are trust, transparency, smart money, “family, friends and fools” and how choosing to have an investor or not is a lifestyle choice. The candid comments made on how to go from a “garage” start-up to a successful entrepreneur are honest and insightful.

Dorian Selz started Memonic before the existence of Catch, Evernote and Springpad. However, he and his team soon came face to face with a well-oiled Silicon Valley machine, and it was immediately clear to everyone that Evernote would become the market leader, and that Memonic – manual note taking – would not stand a chance against them. The venture would have to be reconsidered and Squirro – automatic note taking – was born. With Squirro, they may have a product proposition that is a little bit too new, and so their journey takes them from scintillating excitement to being utterly broke – repeatedly. Mr Selz shares three types of failure with the audience: the failure of recognising an opportunity, the failure of getting a team aligned with an opportunity and the failure of not taking advantage of an opportunity in the right way. Peppering his interesting stories of failure with his own personal experiences, facts and insight, Mr Selz shows with honest candidness just how tough the road success really is.

Dissecting the failure helped him to drive success in new businesses that he launched. He now repeats the “failure exercise” both at the business level as well as at the project level; understanding why something didn’t work and learning from it makes him more resilient as an entrepreneur. In his talk, Mr Parekh offers a plethora of quotes to illustrate what every entrepreneur should think about.

About 1 out of 10 VC funded start-ups fail to meet the investors expectations. Only around 3 out of 10 make back the money that was invested in them. The risk involved in creating companies that scale means a very different risk-reward scheme compared to traditional young businesses. Failure is inevitable – but also required. Failure creates experienced entrepreneurs, and it means that the ideas pursued are ambitious enough.

Marcus Kuhn tells the audience all of the intricate details involving the product of his first start-up that failed. He also touches on the topics of the measure of success, the lack of risk taking and the hope he has for change in the Swiss start-up landscape.
