Cognatrix 1.6.1 released

A new version of Cognatrix has been released. This version corrects a problem which prevented Cognatrix 1.6 from installing correctly on Macintosh running a clean installation of Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). This version is functionally identical to Cognatrix 1.6 and there is no benefit to installing Cognatrix 1.6.1 on Snow Leopard and earlier systems. You may install it if you wish. It will do no harm. It is just a waste of time and effort.

Cognatrix installation problem (Lion)

A bug has been identified which may prevent Cognatrix from installing properly on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion). The symptom is the message that Cognatrix can not complete its installation and is associated with a reason code of 0x1. You will find further information about the problem, including an interim workaround, here.

Cognatrix 1.6

Version 1.6 of Cognatrix is available and can be downloaded here.
This release includes all features previously announced in the various beta versions of Cognatrix 1.6. This release now becomes the supported version and the upgrade path from all previous versions of Cognatrix. Note that Mac OS X 10.5 or later is required.

Cognatrix 1.6.0b4 (beta; multilingual)

Version 1.6.0b4 of Cognatrix is available and can be downloaded here.
Changes include:

Significant work done to support resolution independence (eg vector graphics for toolbar and taxonomy icons).

Now implements broader and narrower equivalence for multilingual relationships. DTD updated to version 1.3 for multilingual support.

Added additional substitution keys for HTML generation (QIDLanguageCode, QIDLanguageName, QIDLanguageNativeName).

A bug that appears to have surfaced under Leopard which prevented double-clicking item names in tree and list views has been squashed.

Occasionally, a timing issue could cause Cognatrix to crash when opening a document that contained language codes. Now fixed.

Switching to another application no longer causes Cognatrix to lose edits in user-defined fields.

Language codes can now be up to 20 characters to support unusual requirements (no longer restricted to two or three characters for ISO names).

SearchKit indexes generated for CognatrixSearch now include qualified names.

New preference allows choice of delimiters for qualified names.

A bug that appears to have surfaced under Leopard which caused a crash after printing to a PDF has been squashed.

Corrects a problem in XML generation where a query string or other complex string in an embedded URL was unlikely to be encoded properly.

This is the “Gold Master” candidate for Cognatrix 1.6. Users are reminded that, while Cognatrix 1.6 can read Cognatrix 1.5.2 theaurus documents, Cognatrix 1.5.2 is unable to read theaurus documents saved by Cognatrix 1.6.

Cognatrix 1.6.0b3 (beta; multilingual)

Version 1.6.0b3 of Cognatrix is available and can be downloaded here. This release is functionally identical to 1.6.0b2 but adds version information to the thesaurus documents it saves. This update works in conjunction with Cognatrix 1.5.2 in that thesaurus documents created by Cognatrix 1.6.0b3 (or later) will be correctly identified, rather than just silently fail to open.

Cognatrix 1.5.2 has been released. This version is functionally identical to Cognatrix 1.5.1 but is able to detect an attempt to open a Cognatrix 1.6 (“multilingual”) document. Responds with the message “The document could not be opened”, rather than just doing nothing.

CognatrixSearch 1.0

LGOSystems has released CognatrixSearch 1.0 which is a search engine designed to be used with Cognatrix thesauri. It runs on Mac OS X 10.4 and later (Tiger) and helps your users to find terms published in your Cognatrix thesauri. CognatrixSearch is built on SearchKit technology (ie, the same as SpotLight). It is implemented as a web “CGI”, is controlled from a “System Preferences” panel, and works with multiple thesauri out of the box. CognatrixSearch is a free add-on to Cognatrix. Cognatrix 1.6 beta (multilingual)

A beta version of Cognatrix 1.6 is available. This version allows you to create multi-lingual thesauri where terms in different languages can be associated with each other via a new set of relationships: exact equivalence, inexact equivalence and partial equivalence. Cognatrix 1.6 ships with 20 languages predefined (those for the EU) but you can add, delete or edit language definitions as needed. There is no design limit on the number of language definitions that can be supported. Each item in your thesaurus has a language code and this carries through to generated HTML and XML. Naturally, Unicode is supported in all fields so you can use any language script supported by Mac OS X. An information page is available where you can find out more about Cognatrix 1.6. Version 1.4 of Cognatrix has been released. Cognatrix is now a universal binary and is supported on Mac OS X 10.4.5 or later. This version is functionally identical to version 1.3. There is no need to download it unless you wish to deploy Cognatrix on an Intel-based Macintosh.

An updater has been released for Cognatrix. Clicking OK in the Preferences window now saves partial edits in text fields correctly (it is no longer necessary to press return or tab, or click in another field). The XML tab of the Preferences window lets you define alternative locations for DTDs. If you delete a DTD Location field, Cognatrix will now omit the corresponding DTD specification from any generated XML. The Insert Link... command now senses whether the selection contains a well-formed URL and handles it appropriately (allowing users to drag or paste text containing URLs into user-defined fields and quickly convert the URLs to active links). Cognatrix XML now supports active links and the Cognatrix DTD has been updated accordingly.

An updater has been released for Cognatrix. Cognatrix now supports extensions of .html, .php, .jsp and .asp when generating HTML, meaning that HTML templates can now be customized to make use of server-side functionality in the preparation of thesaurus web pages. The User Guide has been updated to cover this feaure. The User Guide now also contains Appendix B which describes previously undocumented preference options that can be configured by an administrator via the defaults command in a Terminal session. In addition, all discussion of user-defined substitution keys has been moved to Appendix B.

An updater has been released for Cognatrix. Cognatrix now reloads its internal cache of HTML templates whenever the Generate HTML... command is invoked. Previously, it was necesary to quit and relaunch Cognatrix before template changes could be propagated.

This version fixes an inconsistency where clicking the close button in a changed thesaurus document prompts the user to save but the save always fails (whereas pressing Command+S succeeds). Cognatrix is a native (Cocoa) application for creating and maintaining monolingual thesauri, dictionaries, taxonomies or similar information structures such as Definitions Registers. Cognatrix supports Preferred Terms, Variant Terms, Facets and user-defined Attributes for implementing concepts like "audience" or "classification". Terms can be created singly or imported in bulk via drag-and-drop. Cognatrix's multi-document architecture also permits drag and drop of terms between thesauri. Relationship types include Broader & Narrower (including poly-hierarchical), Related Term, Use & Use For, Synonym of & Synonym For and Obsoletes & Obsoleted By. Broader & Narrower relationships are created automatically between Preferred Terms according to their relative positions in the taxonomy (other relationships are created manually). Straightforward design with one window per thesaurus containing two tabbed views. Tree View is where you create and edit terms, and rearrange your taxonomy via drag-and-drop. List View is used for reports. No design limit on number of terms (education version limited to 500 terms). No design limit on number of user-defined fields (eg "Definition" and "Scope Note"). Term names and user-defined fields can hold up to 2 gigabytes of Unicode data. User-defined fields can also contain active URLs. No design limit on number of user-defined attributes. No design limit on number of relationships. No design limit on hierarchical depth. Cognatrix generates XML in Zthes or Cognatrix formats for data interchange. Also generates publication-ready HTML using customizable templates. An extensible helper application (CognatrixImporter) can import thesaurus data in a number of XML formats. Cognatrix is completely self-contained and does not rely on an SQL database; just drag Cognatrix into your Applications folder and double-click.
