The traditional computers or supercomputer are fixed-logic computers where the circuitry of the system is fixed. Meaning, if you design such a computer to perform a specific task, it can do only that with high efficiency. Any other task given will require more time and power. For example, a Digital Signal Processor is efficient when it comes to signal processing, where as it is not that efficient in bit-level manipulation. But, the reconfigurable computer can change its hardware to suit the specific operation at hand. In that way, its kind of a bridge between a general purpose processor (Like the micro processors) and the specific and special purpose processor (DSP). The catch here is that it is highly complex but it is 10-100 times more faster than other supercomputers of the same size. This is a really great advancement in terms of computing. This promises that the future reconfigurable systems will be much faster.

Alan George, professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of UF’s National Science Foundation Center for High-Performance Reconfigurable Computing says, “We don’t want this important technology to be accessible only to experts”. To speculate, will such computers make their way to our homes? Only the future can tell. The news article can be found here

So I found a quite a few softwares on that. But it had to be online. I hate cluttering my PC with so many useless softwares. Soon, I found a cool website to download youtube videos in different formats. Not only youtube, it supposts sites like Metacafe, facebook, MegaVideo, break.com, Spike, and Myspace.

All you need to do is go to Keep-tube.com and paste your youtube video URL there.

Now you have 5 options.

1. Download the video in the regular low quality FLV format.
2. Download the video in the high quality FLV format.
3. Download the video in 3GP format for your mobile phone.
4. Download the HQ video in MP4 format.
5. Download the video in HD (also MP4), if the video is uploaded in HD that is.

The HD video is quite a large file. Like atleast 50 mb for a music video. But the quality is awesome.

Another simple way to download the videos is just adding “keep-” before youtube.com while watching the video. You will be redirected to Keep-tube. They also have a Firefox add-on. Or, you can create a bookmark (favourites) and click on that while watching a video. It is better explained here.

The Password Traveler security software does not work on Mac and Linux as specified on the website. The product comes with a five years warranty. Now for the most important question, how much does it cost? Well,  to give you a range, it might cost you somewhere between Rs. 43,ooo ($900) to Rs. 52,000 ($1000) depending on the reseller. Kingston says that they are releasing it in Far East, Europe, Middle East & Africa only. Anyway, I think the prices will drop drastically when the competitors start to release their products of similar capacity. Hopefully next year we will see bigger and faster drives for far cheaper price

yt3d:enable=true Enables the view mode. (obviously you’ve already discovered this)

yt3d:aspect=3:4 Sets the aspect of the encoded video.

Also, to fix up the old videos, there is a tag that lets the uploader to set the exact cordinates for both, left and right sources. An example he gives is yt3d:left=0_0.1_0.5_0.9 and yt3d:right=0.5_0.1_1_0.9 where the numbers are of the form x_y_z representing the exact co-ordinate. Since this is his side project, he says the fixing of the bugs will take some time. For example, the above mentioned anaglyph bug makes it confusing for the uploader regarding the stacking of the left and right views. None-the-less, the viewer can watch the videos in many different modes by selecting them from the drop down menu just below the video screen.

3D video in crosseyed mode

There are many videos already on youtube that can be viewed in 3D. As shown above, you can view them in different modes. I do not have 3D glasses  right now on me. So, I just used the cross-eyed mode and viewed the video with my eyes crossed. What you need to do is this, cross your eyes (Meaning bring them towards each other) while looking at the video. During this, there will be a time when the left and right videos will co-incide. Stop at that point and try to focus on it. If you are not getting it, you can try this first by drawing two points (thick) 10 cm apart on a white sheet and try to see them as a single point in the same way as above. Then you can shift to the video. This will make the video appear 3D. But of course, this will become irritating after some time . So, the best way is to watch it using the 3D glasses and the anaglyph mode. You can buy one as the videos are going to increase anyways. Or, you can make one yourself. Its quite easy and explained on many websites. For your convinience I will be putting up the procedure here.

Material needed:

• Cardboard – For the frame
• Cello tape or glue
• Glass papers Red and blue. Also called acetate sheets usually available in the shops where you buy art supplies. or you can use transparent plastic sheets and colour on them. Make sure the plastic is sufficiently thick. As thick as 5 pages of a good book.

Stencil for the glasses

Procedure:

First cut the cardboard in the shape of the 3D glasses. I have uploaded an image that can be used as reference. The small squares need to be made hollow on which the blue and red plastic will sit.

Next cut the glass papers a little bigger that the square holes that you made. Stick the red paper on the LEFT (It must come on your left EYE) and the blue on the right. Then stick the entire frame together. Thats it you are done and ready to watch the 3D videos using the colour modes (anaglyph) from the menu. Try with different colours and choose the best one.

Note: You can also use the CD case which is essentially transparent plastic. If you can cut it into squares and fix it on the above stencils then good. Later you can colour them with permanent markers. Else, you can use the above frame that you cut as stencil and colour directly on the case itself and use it to watch the video (For the lazy people ). Anyhow, do check them out and enjoy.

Not only that, the basic menu also has the find location to find any location in the city. But it still needs to update its database. Although it shows the roads, it cannot show it in the atlas, it can show it on the satellite images. This can be enabled from the satellite menu in the right corner below the top menu. Refer the 4th image in the gallery for this. There are more options in the advanced tab as well. The events option will list the events that will be happening in the city. It works only for major cities. I tired Bangalore and got quite a few results. Click on the one you want and a new box opens up giving a little details. To know more just click event in this new box and it will open the relevant site. Really nice tool. The rest of the options still need updating. But the site is really cool and is functional for the Western countries. Also, on signing up you will get 1 GB space to store your files and you can make friends and update your location on the atlas. Also, there is the experimental section where the users’ tweets are displayed real time. Do check it out.

As you can see, there is an option to increase the numbers “Add next 7 items” Even after adding them, you wont have all the PMs of India. That is why there is the “Add items” bar below the first column. There, it will give you more suggestions and you can add them to this list and increase the rows. Similarly, you can increase the number of columns by adding more categories like “Date of death”, “Succeeded by” and so on that it suggests when you click in that empty bar. Not only can you add the suggested rows and columns, you can type in your own category or person’s name. After making all the changes you need, you can save your square if you are logged in with your Google Account. I gave another search as “IPL” and the result is shown below

The original result did not have the “captain” and “coach” columns, I added them. But, the result somehow included Middle East . You can click on the “Description” field and visit the source site and you will know that

Hence, that was relevant and was included. Had I typed in “IPL teams” then that would not have been included. Even now, we can remove that from our results by clicking on the cross mark left to it. That said, this is a very good way yo consolidate your web searches. But ofcourse, this still needs refinement and as you can see, it did not give any results for Deccan Chargers’ (My favourite team) captian. Anyway, I hope this will be improved more and will come in handy when I do some research work
