Gore Vidal's The Best Man: Theater Review

Vidal's family made the announcement Tuesday, leaving a brief message his official website and Twitter account.
A novelist, essayist, playwright and screenwriter, Vidal was a leading political liberal voice from the 1950's and forward; he ran for Congress in New York in 1960. Once a writer for MGM, he earned fame for his satirical novels, including Myra Breckenridge, which, with its transexual themes, was a highly controversial and groundbreaking work when published in 1968. Earlier, his The City and the Pillar was one of the first novels to deal openly with homosexuality, in 1948. The New York Times refused to review it.
Born to a politically-connected family -- his father served in the administration of President Franklin Roosevelt, while his mother was once married to Hugh Auchincloss, who, while a Republican, was later Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis' stepfather -- Vidal grew up in Washington, DC, and after attending Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, enlisted in the US Army as a Private, serving in World War II.
His on-air fight with William F. Buckley during the 1968 Democratic National Convention became the stuff of legend. He also took on Ayn Rand in a famous column for Esquire. In fact, it was his essays that earned him the most fame. A writer for The New York Review of Books, among many other publications, Vidal would win the National Book Award for Nonfiction in 1993 for his collection, United States: 1952-1992.
His play, The Best Man, is currently being staged in revival on Broadway. Both Best Man and an earlier play, A Visit to a Small Planet, were made into hit films. He wrote the screenplays for a pair of Tennessee Williams adaptations: Suddenly Last Summer (1959), which featured Katharine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor in Oscar-nominated roles; and Sidney Lumet's Last of the Mobile Hot Shots (1970).
In more recent years, Vidal continued to write on political themes, and advocated the impeachment of President George W. Bush.
Two of his plays, 1957's Visit to a Small Planet and 1960's The Best Man, were successes on Broadway and on film.
Vidal wrote Visit to a Small Planet as a television play, then reworked it two years later for the Broadway stage, where it debuted in February 1957 and became a critical hit.
A satire on the post-World War II fear of Communism and McCarthyism in the U.S., it starred Cyril Ritchard on stage and Jerry Lewis in the 1960 film as an alien intending to visit Earth for the Civil War but errantly lands 100 years later.
The Best Man became a 1964 film starring Henry Fonda and Cliff Robertson as backstabbing candidates from the same party vying for the ex-president's endorsement. The play, which ran for 520 performances, starred Melvyn Douglas in the Fonda role and Frank Lovejoy in the Robertson role.
Vidal also wrote the screenplays for a pair of Tennessee Williams adaptations -- 1959's Suddenly Last Summer, starring best actress Oscar nominees Elizabeth Taylor and Katharine Hepburn, and Sidney Lumet's Last of the Mobile Hot Shots (1970), with James Coburn and Lynn Redgrave.
His 1968 novel Myra Breckinridge, written in the form of a diary, became the bizarre 1970 film comedy that starred Raquel Welsh, John Huston and Mae West in her penultimate movie.
His teleplay for The Left-Handed Gun became a 1958 film directed by first-time helmer Arthur Penn and starred Paul Newman as Billy the Kid (he also played the role on TV).
Vidal also wrote the original draft for the pornographic 1979 film Caligula but had his name removed when the script was rewritten by director Tinto Brass and star Malcolm McDowell.
Vidal, who was briefly engaged to actress Joanne Woodward, Newman's future wife, had a cameo in Federico Fellini's Roma (1972) and voiced himself on TV's The Simpsons and Family Guy. The pop star obtained her ninth No. 1 single on Top 40 radio on Tuesday, alongside her tenth No. 1 on the Billboard Dance/Club Play chart, for her smash hit “Wide Awake” off Teenage Dream: The Complete Confection, the special edition of her most recent album.

Perry now ties Rihanna’s record for most No. 1s on Billboard’s Top 40 chart, but Billboard commented on why Perry’s latest hit is different than Rihanna’s. "The achievement is even more impressive given that while the chart launched the week of Oct. 3, 1992, Rihanna didn’t first grace the list until 2005 and Perry didn’t arrive until 2008," the article states. "Of the acts with the most Mainstream Top 40 No. 1s, the top seven are women.”
Perry and Rihanna are trailed by Lady Gaga, Pink and Britney Spears, who each have seven respective No. 1s. Beyonce and Mariah Carey both have six.

"Wide Awake" is also featured on Perry’s 3D film, Part Of Me, which was released on July 5 of this year. The film, which chronicles Perry’s career as a global superstar, will soon gross $30 million dollars internationally. Her film has also been noted as the fourth biggest music documentary of all time.
Perry’s first No. 1 came from her debut album, One of the Boys, with the song “Waking Up In Vegas,” which was released in April 2009.
Tuesday marks more than just one achievement for Perry, as she has also been nominated for four MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year for "Wide Awake."

Rebooting a much-loved British TV drama from the 1970s, this flashy biggest project yet from the writer-director Nick Love, a kind of low-rent Guy Ritchie who has earned a respectable domestic following with simplistic love letters to macho villainy such as The Football Factory and The Business. A play on Sweeney Todd, the title derives from the cockney rhyming-slang nickname for the Flying Squad, a branch of London’s Metropolitan Police first set up in the 1920s to tackle armed robbery and violent crime.
With Ray Winstone and Homeland star Damian Lewis in the cast, and a kinetic visual style that imbues contemporary London with all the glossy swagger of a Michael Mann production, The Sweeney feels muscular and dynamic enough to reel in a worldwide action-movie audience. But fans of the original TV series, or simply of quaint notions like subtlety and wit, are unlikely to be seduced by Love’s infantile cops-and-robbers fantasy.
Heading for its world premiere at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland this week, Love’s film is not the first big-screen outing for The Sweeney. Spawning two cinematic spin-offs in the late 1970s, the original series became a hugely successful milestone in British television. Running between 1975 and 1978, it was the first show to portray policemen as rule-bending anti-heroes with a taste for casual brutality, booze and bed-hopping.
The TV show starred John Thaw, who later found global fame as a more refined but equally irascible detective in Inspector Morse. The dinosaur sexism and politically incorrect attitudes of Thaw’s character, senior Flying Squad detective Jack Regan, has since been much copied and parodied, most recently inspiring the hard-bitten cop Gene Hunt in the BBC police drama Life on Mars and its short-lived US remake.
Winstone steps into Thaw’s hobnailed boots as Regan, glowering and growling his way through some excruciatingly bad lines. Playing his streetwise young deputy Carter is Ben Drew, aka rapper Plan B, who wrote and directed his own superior London crime drama Ill Manors earlier this year. Drew is a fine musician and promising film-maker, but he looks stiff and muted here, possibly in response to a painfully corny script. At least Lewis brings a dash of delicacy to his supporting role as the Squad’s long-suffering boss, torn between protecting his loose-cannon lawmen and the bean-counting City Hall bureaucrats who want to shut them down.
Revolving around a bank heist, a murder in a jewellery shop and a renegade gang of Balkan hit men, Love’s contemporary remake borrows little from its TV blueprint besides title, names and basic set-up. The characters are crudely drawn and the plot fairly generic, but the film scores best on a purely visual level. The action scenes have a visceral punch and swagger, especially a fast-moving gun battle around the tourist landmarks of Trafalgar Square, and a climactic car chase through a coastal trailer park.
While the original TV series was mostly shot in scruffy drinking dens and crumbling warehouses in west London, Love relocates the Squad’s operations to a high-tech skyscraper in London’s newly regenerated East End. Their office resembles a super-slick advertising agency, while their pristine white interrogation rooms could be art gallery in a Kubrick movie. All glass and steel and new money, this emerging 21st century citadel has never been so well captured on screen before. Love makes its gleaming architecture a key motif in his film, shooting it from above in stylishly washed-out greys and blues.
But however appealing these visual touches may be, they are simply not enough to distract us from the film’s clumsy characterisation, comically bad dialogue and groaningly clichéd plot. While Thaw’s small-screen Regan was a prickly but sharp-witted charmer, Winstone’s pot-bellied, pugnacious big-screen version comes across as a brutish bully and borderline psychopath. When not punching through walls or head-butting suspected criminals, he is sleeping with the wife of an uptight pen-pushing colleague who is investigating the Squad for alleged corruption.
In the real Metropolitan Police of 2012, Regan’s leering chauvinism and childish antagonism to his superior officers would get him sacked within a week. Alas, all the evidence suggests that Love expects us to admire him as a bad-ass maverick. The female Squad members, all mysteriously younger and better looking than their male colleagues, naturally find Regan and his boorish crew irresistible. Real men, the script suggests, earn respect with their fists.
In this respect, The Sweeney owes more to Love’s previous films than to its vintage TV blueprint. Given the director’s track record of reactionary dramas that celebrate lowlife thuggery and vigilante justice, this is a serious flaw. Perhaps Love’s testosterone-fuelled exercise in visual razzle-dazzle will help sell him to Hollywood as a maker of shallow but eye-catching crime thrillers in the Tony Scott mould. But on its own merits, The Sweeney is as charmless as an angry drunk at a wedding, and as subtle as a shotgun blast to the face.

Hackers may target global air traffic control

Las Vegas. Air traffic control software used around the world could be exploited by hackers to unleash squadrons of ghost planes to befuddle those entrusted to keep the skies safe, a security researcher said last week.
Cyprus-based Andrei Costin demonstrated his findings at a Black Hat gathering of cyber defenders that ended last Thursday in Las Vegas. "This is for information only," Costin said as he outlined how someone with modest tech skills and about $2,000 worth of electronics could vex air traffic controllers or even stalk celebrities travelling in private jets.
"Everything you do is at your own risk." Costin's target was an ADS-B system in place for aircraft to communicate with one another and with air traffic control systems at airports.
The system, which has been rolled out internationally in recent years in a multi-billion dollar upgrade, was designed to better track aircraft so airport traffic can flow more efficiently.
A perilous flaw is that the system is not designed to verify who is actually sending a message, meaning that those with malicious intent can impersonate aircraft either as pranks or to cause mayhem, according to Costin.
"There is no provision to make sure a message is genuine," he said.
"It is basically an inviting opportunity for any attacker with medium technical knowledge."
Air traffic controllers faced with a signal from a fake airplane resort to cross-checking flight plans, putting relevant portions of air space off limits while they work.
"Imagine you inject a million planes; you don't have that many people to cross-check," Costin said. "You can do a human resource version of a denial of service attack on an airport." (AFP)

Denial of service attacks commonly used by hackers involve overwhelming websites with so many simultaneous online requests that they crash or slow to the point of being useless.
Aviation agencies are adept at identifying and locating "rogue transmitters" on the ground, but not at countering signals from drones or other robotic aircraft becoming more common and available, according to the researcher.
Another danger in the new-generation air traffic control system, according to Costin, is that position, velocity and other information broadcast by aircraft isn't encrypted and can be snatched from the air.

Artistes sever business with mobile firm

Dar es Salaam. One week after it was revealed that Bongo Flava artistes were losing billions of shillings in royalty sharing scheme, artistes have moved in to sever business with Push Mobile, The Citizen can exclusively reveal.

Through Trustworth Attorney, the local artistes have served Spice Vas Tanzania Limited with a seven-day notice to terminate their contract through which the company was selling their works to mobile phone companies.Also affected in the severance deal are other companies that have been involved in brokering the deal between the artistes and mobile phone companies such as Spice and Crystal.

In what seems to be a move to bar the operators, who were the main suppliers of artistic works to mobile companies’ agent OnMobile, the artistes have rallied over 127 signatures to stop any further transaction involving their work.Some of the artistes that committed their signatures to the petition are rappers Prof Jay, AY, Mwana FA, Godzilla, Fid Q, Mataluma, Izzo B and Dully Sykes.

Representing local bands, the African Stars Twanga Pepeta management also signed the document and so have 45 gospel artistes in the country.

Signatures of those who were not available were signed by their managers and representatives.
“We, the artistes of Tanzania in unison irrespective of the genre, instruct you to stop any further sale of our music in terms of caller tunes and ring tones to mobile phone companies,” reads the letter drawn by their lawyers to the company.The mobile phone companies mentioned in the letter, a copy of which was seen by The Citizen, include Vodacom, Zantel, Tigo and Airtel.

The new development puts in suspence the agreement that local artistes had entered into with these companies. The artistes now want the agreement to be nullified.

Asked whether it would not be breaching the contract, the source who preferred anonymity because he was not the spokesperson of the group, maintained that there was nothing to breach any further as several clauses had already been violated.

“For example, in the agreement that we entered into, we were supposed to receive a monthly financial statement plus our royalties. but to tell the truth no one has ever received any statement,” said the source.

The artistes planned to send the cancellation letter to the involved parties yesterday demanding an immediate end to the use of their songs, citing unfair dealings.

Chaos as children now stage their own protest

The teachers’ strike drew a storm of protests yesterday, with pupils in Dar es Salaam taking to the streets to demand their right to be taught. Police had to step in and disperse the children, who marched to government offices and asked the authorities to find an immediate solution to the crisis on a day that also saw four teachers in Mbeya charged with inciting their colleagues to stage a boycott.

Police used tear gas to disperse the angry pupils gathered at the regional commissioner’s office, demanding that the stand-off between their teachers and the government be resolved immediately. Pupils from Kawawa Primary School in Dar es Salaam marched to Regional Commissioner Said Meck Sadick’s office, only to find that he was unavailable. Undeterred, they asked the officers present to solve the teachers’ problems so that they could return to class. The officers promised the hundreds of children, who arrived at the offices at around 12pm, that they would order their teachers to return to work or face disciplinary action.

Pupils from eight primary schools in Tegeta tried to get to the Kinondoni district commissioner’s office but police dispersed them at Kunduchi. Pupils from Tabata Primary School in Dar es Salaam also attempted to march from their school to the local regional commissioner’s office but were intercepted at Buguruni.

The angry pupils said they took to the streets because “that would force the authorities to hear our voices”.
Only few teachers reported for work yesterday. At Kisutu primary school, Headteacher Asha Juma said all teachers reported for work and she made sure that they all attended to “what made them leave their houses”.

Back in Mbeya, the police charged the teachers they had arrested with inciting their colleagues to stage the strike. They included two Tanzania Teachers Union district secretaries in Kyela and Rungwe.

The Regional Police Commander, Mr Athumani Diwani, said the teachers had gone round local primary and secondary schools urging their colleagues who had reported for work to join the boycott.

He added: “We were tipped off by our informers and we made a follow up... we have managed to arrest these four teachers. We have information that they also threatened those who refused to take part in the strike.”
Commander Diwani named the accused as Petro Mangula (52), the TTU secretary in Kyela District, Emmanuel Kyejo, 45, from Mbebe primary school in Ileje District, Anyangigwe Lwingwa, 54 and from Mkumbukwa primary school, and Akso Kibona, 52, a TTU secretary in Rungwe District.

The Morogoro Regional Police Commander, Mr Faustine Shilogile, warned the striking teachers that he and his team were well prepared to deal with chaos. He told the teachers not to incite and use schoolchildren to cause mayhem as they would also be dealt with “accordingly”.

In Mwanza Region, the government announced tough measures against any TTU leaders found to have instigated the strike. As the strike entered its second day, most teachers opted to stay away.

Mwanza Regional Commissioner Evarist Ndikilo said the teachers should not heap blame on the government for the pay crisis but look to their union which, he said, had failed to effectively fight for their rights.

At most schools The Citizen visited yesterday, only children appeared to be present. At Mugumu A Primary School in Serengeti District, The Citizen reporter found that prefects were running the show in some classes.

The TTU chairman in Serengeti, Mr Baruti Moranya, said over 80 per cent of teachers responded positively to the strike.
In another development, the Labour Division of the High Court will tomorrow rule on whether or not the strike is legal after the government sought a court injunction. Lawyers representing the government and the TTU finished their submissions yesterday.

Judge Sophia Wambura will read the verdict at 2pm in a case in which the government has asked the court to declare the strike illegal.

The parties to the application include the Chief Secretary, the Permanent Secretary in the President’s office in charge of Public Service Management, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and the Attorney General.

Manchester United share sale causes controversy among fans and investors

Manchester United fans aren't happy. And looking at the terms of the proposed share sale in New York announced last night, it's not hard to see why.

The Glazer family, the club's US owners, want to raise up to $330m (£210m) on Wall Street, having shelved plans to raise $1bn in Singapore.
The problems lie with the terms of the sale, and what the Glazers intend to do with the money raised.
Only part of the proceeds will go towards paying down the club's $680m debt, with a significant chunk going directly to the Glazers themselves. And the structure of the sale means the Glazers' Class B shares will have 10 times the voting power of the Class A shares sold to the public.
"Supporters are going to be very angry about this," says Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters Trust.
"The Glazers have already cost United more than £550m in debt-related fees and now we have another slap in the face as they help themselves to half of the proposed [sale] proceeds.

China swimmer Ye Shiwen clean, says BOA boss Moynihan

Teenage Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen is not a drug cheat, the British Olympic Association's chairman has said, after a US coach cast doubt on her world record-breaking swim.

Lord Colin Moynihan said Ye, 16, had passed drug tests, was "clean" and deserved recognition for her talent.
Ye smashed her personal best by at least five seconds in the 400m Medley.
Senior US coach John Leonard said her performance was disturbing and hinted that doping could have been involved.
Mr Leonard, executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, said the performance reminded him of the East German women swimmers in the 1980s, who were doping on a systematic basis.
"History in our sport will tell you that every time we see something, and I will put quotation marks around this, unbelievable, history shows us that it turns out later on there was doping involved," he told the UK's Guardian newspaper.

But Ye, who will compete later in the 200m Medley final, has strongly defended herself and denied that she would ever use banned substances.

China's anti-doping chief has said Chinese athletes have undergone nearly 100 drugs tests since arriving in London, and that not a single Chinese athlete had tested positive.
Former swimmers, other Olympic champions and experts have all given their support to Ye.
Lord Moynihan told a news conference that the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) was "on top of the game".
"She's been through Wada's programme and she's clean. That's the end of the story. Ye Shiwen deserves recognition for her talent," he said.
International Olympic Committee officials also insisted that if there were any drugs cheats, they would be caught.

Uganda's Yoweri Museveni warns of Ebola threat

Uganda's President Yoweri Museveni has urged people to avoid physical contact, after the deadly Ebola virus claimed one life in the capital, Kampala.

Fourteen people have now died since the outbreak began in western Uganda three weeks ago, he said in a broadcast.
There have been no confirmed cases of the infection spreading in Kampala.
Ebola, one of the most virulent diseases in the world, is spread by close personal contact.
Mr Museveni said health officials were trying to trace everyone who had had contact with victims so that they could be quarantined.
People should avoid shaking hands, kissing or having sex to prevent the disease from spreading, he added.
Mr Museveni said relatives and friends should not bury anyone who is suspected to have died of Ebola.
"Instead call health workers because they know how to do it," he said.
Shocked Mr Museveni said seven doctors and 13 health workers at Mulago hospital - the main referral hospital in Kampala - were in quarantine after "at least one or two cases" were taken there from Kibaale district, about 170km (100 miles) west of Kampala.
One victim - a health worker who had been transferred to the capital - later died.
"I wish you good luck, and may God rest the souls of those who died in eternal peace," Mr Museveni said as he ended his address to the nation.
The BBC's Ignatius Bahizi in Kampala says that some people have not yet heard about the latest outbreak of Ebola and are shocked when they find out.
At a bus station in the city centre, our correspondent saw officials warning passengers about the virus and telling them to avoid physical contact.
The first victim of the latest outbreak was a pregnant woman.
It then spread at a funeral, Mr Museveni said.
Uganda has seen three major Ebola outbreaks over the past 12 years.
The deadliest was in 2000 when 425 people were infected. More than half of them died.
There is no vaccine for the virus. Symptoms include sudden onset of fever, weakness, headache, vomiting and kidney problems.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers insists that Carroll wants to stay

The England international has been linked with a move away from Merseyside after he struggled to make an impact since joining from Newcastle for £35million in January 2011.
His former club have, however, already had an initial offer to bring Carroll back to Tyneside turned down.

It is rumoured that manager Di Matteo sees one of Radamel Falcao and Edinson Cavani as the ideal replacement for the Ivorian who scored the winning penalty in the Champions League final last season.
Both names are sure to be accompanied by a heavy price tag - but Gourlay is adamant that Abramovich will do whatever is necessary to ensure the west London club remain one of Europe's best teams.

Roberto Mancini admits Robin van Persie has a difficult decision to make about his future with Manchester City, Manchester United and Juventus all battling for his coveted signature.

The Dutchman has made it clear he will not sign a new contract at the Emirates, but Arsenal have so far not agreed a deal with any of the three clubs to make a bid for his services.
Van Persie too has yet to outline his preferred destination and Mancini understands that it is not an easy decision for the striker, should he be given a straight choice between the three.
"When you talk about Manchester City, Manchester United and Juve, it is difficult for a player to choose between those three clubs," said Mancini from City's pre-season tour in the Far East.
"They are all top teams and I've no idea what will happen with him. If we have a chance to take him, we will try because we think he is a top striker.
"For now he is an Arsenal player and I think Arsenal are a top team. It is not easy for Van Persie and other players to leave them."

Tough

Mancini insists City find it tougher to sign players than most clubs because of their wealthy owner Sheikh Mansour.
"It's not easy when City try to buy a player," he said.
"The club we are buying from asks for 30 or 40 per cent more. For this reason it is sometimes difficult to do business. But I think also we need to work better."

My name is Lukundo Samwel Kileha,i was born in 1992 at Kasulu district hospital in Kigoma region.I completed my primary education at Kalema Primary School.I went to Shinyanga technical school to start my ordinary level studies.I can say Shinyanga is the place where my knowledge on computing starts,i met one Friend called Basil Kalimanzila.This person show me they way to computing by providing some useful materials on how to use internet,my first book to read was "HOW TO USE INTERNET" written by Jamini Guide to computer.
Finally i got a connection with Basil's cousin who is now an engineer at Caspian Diamond Limited,he is called Simon Siwango.This person enlighten my way to computing more than i was before.
When i was in level three (form three) at that school it happen the coincidence i shifted to St.Thomas Aquinas
Secondary School located in Igunga-Tabora.This is the School which strengthen me in computing issues with special thanks to my beloved computer teachers Mr.Hassan Mzinga and Mr.Aman Mgassa.
They taught me how to work with simple and complex programs also they taught me Computer maintenance and repairing so i become confident and competent in computing.
I completed my ordinary school and i was the only student who awarded the certificate.
After my o'level studies i went to Tusiime High School,also i met with my friends who upgrades my knowledge by collaborating in many things.I met also with other teachers who directed me in every thing i was doing,special thanks to Mr.Makala and Mr.Micky,apart from studying my PCM studies i got the time to deal with computing stuffs.

If you think there is no film industry in Tanzania, think again! Adding to the well known industries of Hollywood, Bollywood, and Nollywood (Nigeria), there is another, well established but elsewhere unknown, wood- Swahiliwood. And it's been around for over ten years!

MFDI is embarking on an exciting and innovative project, engaging the vibrant and growing Tanzanian film industry to coproduce feature films that embrace Entertainment-Education. The production process will focus on capacity building of local Swahiliwood filmmakers, and their Entertainment-Education themes will reach wide audiences via Swahiliwood's vast distribution network.
We are now laying the groundwork for the Swahiliwood Project by doing research on the local film industry in five regions and developing the Swahiliwood workshop series curriculum. We are also building a state of the art filming and post production studio to facilitate the training. Read on to learn more about the Swahiliwood Project. MFDI-TZ in partnership with JHUCCP-TZ is embarking on an exciting project, which aims to harness the power of the growing Swahili film industry in Tanzania to deliver BCC and EE messaging on HIV/AIDS and Family Planning.
The Swahiliwood Project is very much a collaborative and mutually beneficial effort between Tanzanian Producers and MFDI-TZ. The Producers’ contribution to MFDI-TZ is access to their very successful film distribution networks for BCC/EE films. MFDI-TZ’s contribution to the Producers is production training.
The project will see popular Swahili filmmakers going through a series of workshops, walking them through the process of producing a film with a BCC/EE focus. Workshops will cover script development, preproduction, production, postproduction and marketing of films.
The workshop process will help the resulting BCC/EE films (which we are calling Swahiliwood Productions) stand out in the market due to higher production values. It will also encourage filmmakers to embark on their own BCC/EE projects.
The core participants for the Swahiliwood workshop series will be Tanzanian Producer/Directors, as they will be the ones responsible for the film as a whole. However, they will not be present for the entirety of all the workshops, but rather come in for general briefs at each stage of the workshop.
Filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and the Swahiliwood Workshop Series is designed to engage key members of filmmaking teams with the aim of:
1. Building the capacity of filmmaking teams in the Swahili film industry.
2. Bettering the production values of Swahiliwood projects, so that they stand out in the market.
3. Bettering producers understanding of what it means to produce a film to a BCC/EE brief.
We have over the last few weeks been doing comprehensive research on the Tanzanian film industry trends in four regions across the country: Dar es Salaam, Mbeya, Iringa, Singida and Mwanza. The results are very promising, showing wide viewership of local films nationwide in a vibrant and profitable cultural industry that provides thousands of jobs for Tanzanians. And the best thing is, it is growing at a very encouraging rate. We will be publishing the final research report when it is done. Watch this space for more exciting developments.
