Hello all.  It has been a while. Hasn’t it?  If you’ve been reading Coily Crowns consistently over the last few years, then you know that the blog came to a halt months ago.  It has been lovely interacting with readers and fellow bloggers.

With that being said, I want to officially announce that I will no longer be continuing this blog.  Thanks for all the emails, comments and for taking the time out to read my little raindrop of a blog in the monsoon that has become natural hair blogging.  (Yes, I know I became an “everything blog” but Coily Crowns’ roots are natural.)

There shall be one final post, a hairstyling tutorial, in the very near future.  My hairstyle posts were always popular and I definitely wanted to fulfill the tutorial promise.  I shot a video for The Triple Crown.  I think that style pieces together the techniques one would need to try her hand at any of my styles.  I hope that I’ve helped, amused and informed over the years.

I won’t be disappearing completely.  I’m embarking on some new endeavours and perhaps a blog of some sort might crop up again.

Disco Queen Donna Summer died today at age 63.  Apparently, she was battling cancer.

Sure I wasn’t around for the height of the Disco era but I’ve actually always had a thing for Disco music and Donna Summer sang some of my favorites. (And I loved her trademark big hair.)

What’s better than cupcakes? Free cupcakes.  Tomorrow, May 10th Sprinkles New York will be celebrating their 1st anniversary and they are handing out a free cupcake* to customers all day!   If you are a fellow cupcake lover (and you’re familiar with the current popular  free cupcake daily giveaway to “the first  50 people who whisper the secret word” deal that you never get to the shop in time for) this celebration is for you.

Singer Ayo will be performing at the Highline Ballroom in NYC next week on Wednesday, March 21st.  I was late in discovering the German born singer with Nigerian roots’ music but, better late than never.

One of music’s greats, Whitney Houston, is being laid to rest today.  I, as many of my generation, grew up with Whitney’s powerful voice showing us how it’s done.  I don’t remember there ever not being a Whitney Houston.  I was too young to remember when she was introduced to the world.

When the public mourns a celebrity, some say “it’s not like you knew her/him”.  Oh, but I did know Whitney.  I know I remember singing “How Will I Know” as a little girl.  I know that I don’t know anyone who sang or knew someone who sang a Whitney Houston song at a school graduation or talent show.  I know that I remember The Bodyguard soundtrack completely taking over the radio in the 90’s.  I know the goosebumps I felt, and still feel, listening to Whitney singing The Star Spangled Banner were real.  At the time, Whitney’s rendition of the national anthem brought pride to me and other young girls who looked just like me.  (We relentlessly talked about it in school the next day.)

So in the end, I may not have sat down and had a meal with Whitney or opened Christmas presents with her, but her music plays in the soundtrack of my life as it does many others.  And that will always be rememered and it will always be why I love her.  We wanted Whitney to “comeback” and rise above the demons that were evidently determined to weigh her down.  It’s ultimately sad that  she is gone, to say the least, but I’m glad we got to share her and her gift while she was here.

In cupcake news…DC’s Georgtown Cupcake has finally arrived in NYC.  This Saturday, the shop featured on TLC’s reality show, “DC Cupcakes”, is opening a branch in SoHo.  (Yes.  Yes.  Yes.)  The grand opening celebration starts at noon and there will be free cupcakes!    Apparently, the shop will also be introducing three new NYC inspired flavors.  (Not quite sure what the heck that could be.  Bagel cupcake?)

If, like me, you always try to squeeze in a cupcake run when in the DC , now you won’t have to wait for that out-of-town trip.  All you’ll have to do is head over to SoHo.

Fair warning: if their lines are destined to be anything like the DC shop, prepare for lots of standing and waiting around.  (It’s almost absurd now that I think about it.  It’s just a cupcake!  But it is oh…so…tasty!)
