Welcome back to Coin Update!

We're back to bring you a round up of news and articles related to coins and coin collecting from around the internet. First, what is "the big one" that PCGS will announce on March 25, 2010? Also, US Mint sales doldrums and the slow pace of 2010 US Mint products, new member for the CCAC, small diameter US coins, MS65 Morgan Dollars, coin market report following Baltimore, gold performance, precious metals commentary, and notable auctions. On to the links...

PCGS has been mentioning a big announcement coming on March 25, 2010 that "will change coin grading for the better." What could it be?

The latest US Mint sales report shows a general lull in buying activity as collectors wait for more 2010 products to arrive.

On a related note, here's a post on Mint News Blog which discusses just how slow this year has been. As of the current date, there have only been nine individual US Mint products released for 2010. This compares to 19 products released by the same date in 2009, and 35 products by the same date in 2008.

Attention eBay sellers: Starting in 2011 Paypal will be required to file informational returns with the IRS indicating the payments received. There is an exception for sellers with gross sales of less than $20,000 or fewer than 200 transactions.

Heidi Wastweet has been appointed to the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee, as a member specially qualified in the medallic arts. The CCAC had recently announced that they were seeking applicants for a member to represent the general interests of the public.

The Heritage Blog has an interesting examination of the diameter of some of the smallest US coins and how some of them got bigger over time.

An explanation of the market and pricing for common date MS-65 Morgan Dollars.

Curator and Collector has some posts related to the 2010 Olympics. Of particular interest to readers might be the post on the Olympic medals and the post on the 100 kg Gold Maple.

CoinLink has the Legend Numismatics Market Report following the Baltimore show.

According to this article, gold was the best performing investment of the past decade. Comparative returns are provided for other metals, real estate, stocks, and cash.

Patrick A. Heller's latest precious metals commentary discusses China, the US Dollar, and gold.

And now for some notable auctions. First, the low mintage gold and platinum bimetallic 2000-W Library of Congress $10 Coin graded PCGS MS70.

Here is a very interesting watch that is housed within a 1904 $20 Gold Double Eagle. The listing includes several close up pictures of how the watch is integrated into the coin.

Last, an example of the 1999-W $10 Gold Eagle Struck with Unfinished Proof Dies, as shown by the "W" mint mark. The coin is graded MS69 by PCGS.

That's it for today. Have a great evening!

We're back with another round up of coin collecting news from around the internet! First, the second part of the Coingrader Capsule series on submitting coins to PCGS and NGC. Also, the final 2009 Silver Eagle mintage, more on the proposed Reagan $50 Bill, CCAC commemorative coin program recommendations, the King of Barber Coinage, new compositions for Canada, National Gold Exchange, 1859 Indian Head Cents, gold and silver prices, and notable auctions. On to the links...

The second of a three part series on submitting coins to grading services. This article discusses submitting coins to PCGS through the Collector's Club.

The final mintage for the 2009 Silver Eagle bullion coin has come in at 30,459,000. This represents a new record and more than eight times the mintage low for the series.

A number of reactions to news of the proposed Ronald Reagan $50 Bill.

Numismatic News reports on the three commemorative coin proposals and other measures that have been endorsed by the Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee.

David Lawrence Rare Coins has acquired the "King of Barber Coinage" at the Bowers and Merena auction in Baltimore. It is the finest known 1901-S Barber Quarter graded an incredible PCGS MS68.

News on Canadian coins and currency. It has been announced that $10 and $20 bills will change from paper to plastic, and $1 and $2 coins will switch to steel.

An update on National Gold Exchange. The case has been converted from Chapter 11 to Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, meaning that the company will be liquidated. The gold and rare coins are expected to sell for over $5 million.

More than 250 silver coins from the time of Alexander the Great were recently discovered in Syria. Photos are included with the story

An interesting idea for a collection- coins which bear the same date but are a different type. An example would be the 1909 Indian Head Cent and 1909 Lincoln Cent.

Published on CoinLink, here's a closer look at the 1859 Indian Head Cent. The reverse design was changed after just one year.

A commentary from Patrick A. Heller on gold and silver prices, explaining why he thinks prices have not yet peaked.

And now for some notable auctions. Two top graded 1997 Jackie Robinson $5 Uncirculated Gold Coins were just listed. The first is graded PCGS MS70 and the second is graded NGC MS 70.

Next, the popular 2008-W Uncirculated Gold Buffalo 4 Coin Set with all four coins graded NGC MS 70.

Last, a face value $1,000 box of 2010-D Millard Fillmore Dollars.

That concludes another exciting week. Have a great weekend!

Welcome to Coin Update!

We're back with another round up of coin collecting news from around the internet! First, updated coin production figures show that the US Mint has begun minting 2010 Roosevelt Dimes. Also, the latest numismatic sales figures, September 11 Medal proposal, Ronald Reagan $50 bills, America the Beautiful Quarter release, RD/RB/BN for copper coins, a new addition to the Princeton University Numismatic Collection, classic and modern commemorative coins, and notable auctions. On to the links...

United States Mint coin production figures are now available through February 2010. In the latest month the US Mint produced the first dimes since April 2009.

The latest US Mint numismatic sales figures are available on Coin Update News. The opening numbers for the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar are included.

Coin related legislation has been introduced which seeks September 11 Commemorative Medals. A previous proposal sought commemorative coins to be issued for 2011, but two other programs have already been approved for the year.

Separately, there is a proposal to put Ronald Reagan on the $50 bill. This article points out one of the problems of proposing a new likeness for an existing unit of currency- you have to displace someone else.

The America the Beautiful Quarters won't be released until April. The final designs for this year's coins won't even be known until the end of this month.

There hasn't been a story about "Obama coins" for a while. Here's a new article about some of the coins with stickers applied that have been turning up in circulation.

Some coins produced by the New Zealand Mint are proving popular in other European countries.

From the PCGS Library, definitions of Red, Red Brown, and Brown for copper coins, along with an example of the extreme price differences that can result.

The Princeton University Numismatic Collection has acquired the Armenian Heritage Collection of ancient and medieval coins.

On Coinlink, a nice introduction to classic commemorative coins and a few brief reasons why you should collect them.

Moving on to modern commemorative coins, here is a list of some of the recent coin themes that this author found hard to justify.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a 1955 Double Die Lincoln Cent graded NGC MS 64 BN with CAC sticker.

One of those "hard to justify" commemoratives, the 2006 San Francisco $5 Gold NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo. I remember that the Morgan Dollar obverse had briefly been considered for the silver dollar of the same program, but instead they used the reverse.

Last, the current auctions for 2010 Silver Eagle Rolls.

That concludes another update!

We're here to bring you another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, describing and identifying Proof Like Ultra High Relief Double Eagles. Also, the proposal for Gettysburg commemorative coins, Presidential Dollar products sold out, updates on America the Beautiful silver coins, John Jay Pittman, proof Gold and Silver Eagle values, the UK's 1996 Treasure Act, the upcoming Fort Worth ANA show, and notable auctions. On to the links...

A closer look at Proof Like 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins. NGC has awarded the "PL" designation to about a thousand coins which exhibit fully proof like surfaces on the obverse and reverse.

Another bill has been introduced which seeks commemorative coins related to the Gettysburg campaign. Oddly, this version of the bill specifies maximum production of only 100,000 for the clad half dollar included in the program.

Over the past few days, the US Mint has ended sales for several Presidential Dollar products. Here's a look at the products and last reported sales figures from Mint News Blog.

Some new information on America the Beautiful Silver bullion coins in this Numismaster article. A new coining press is due to be installed at the Philadelphia Mint today. Release date for the bullion coins... late summer or early autumn.

Last Thursday, an event on Capitol Hill was held to call attention to the release of the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars.

A UK woman who found a coin in her mother's garden as a child was prosecuted under the Treasure Act for not reporting the find. A subsequent story questions whether the find may pre-date the Act.

Heritage will offer a bonded mated pair of 1972-S Proof cents at the upcoming Fort Worth ANA auction. The post provides a great description of the error type and how it can occur.

The ANA Museum Showcase at Fort Worth will include rare Double Eagles and three historic Quintuple Stellas.

This post from Stella Coin News describes two fresh collections heading to DLRC auctions, which include proof and MS type coins and bust coins.

And now for some notable auctions. First, a complete run of Proof Silver Eagles from 1986 to 2008. All coins are in their original US Mint boxes with COAs.

An interesting US Mint product of the past, the 1993 Philadelphia Gold and Silver Proof Set. The set includes the $25, $10, and $5 Proof Gold Eagles, the Proof Silver Eagle, and a silver 200th Anniversary Medal.

Last, a 1934-S Peace Dollar NGC MS 64. This coin is the often considered a key date for an uncirculated Peace Dollar collection.

That wraps up this update. Have a great evening!

We're back to bring you another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, the American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollar goes on sale at the US Mint. Also, coin submissions to PCGS and NGC, US Mint sales report, Anna Harrison First Spouse Coins, David L. Ganz's 2010 predictions, ten important commemorative coins, history of coin grading, and notable auctions. On to the links...

Today the 2010 American Veterans Disabled for Life Silver Dollars went on sale at the US Mint. The maximum authorized mintage for the commemorative coins is set at 350,00.

The latest edition of Coingrader Capsule starts a three part series concerning submitting coins to PCGS and NGC.

More from Coin Update News:
Latest US Mint Sales Report

The price of the US Mint's numismatic gold coins was raised yesterday, reversing one of the past two consecutive price decreases. The Anna Harrison First Spouse Gold Coins bear some watching in the coming weeks.

David L. Ganz provides his predictions for 2010 and reviews how some of his 2008 and 2009 predictions have worked out.

A reaction to a quarter-page ad in the New York Times for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games Silver Dollars from Canada. The ad called the coins a "HUGE buying opportunity."

More coverage of the 2010 Penny redesign. Once again, the utility of the denomination is called into question, but this author takes a pragmatic view that we are probably stuck with the penny "for another few decades."

An opinion on the ten most significant U.S. Commemorative Coins, along with reasoning behind their selection. Both classic and modern issues are included on the list.

Have you ever tried to get rolls of the latest coin issues from your bank and found them unwilling to accommodate your request? Here's an article from Dave Harper: Time to Put Coins on Your Banking Radar.

A look at the history of coin grading, from the earliest basic descriptions to the 1 to 70 Sheldon scale.

The US Mint is still working on getting rid of their remaining supply of 2009 Gold Eagle bullion coins. Couldn't these 51,000 precious metals blanks been used to produce some of the canceled collector coins?

And now for some notable auctions. First, the key date 1916 Standing Liberty Quarter NGC VF 20. This coin has one of the lowest mintages for a circulating coin of the 20th century at only 52,000.

This I have never seen before. An 1877-CC Trade Dollar that has somehow been split, hinged, and turned into a locket.

Last, the low mintage 2008-W Uncirculated $50 Platinum Eagle graded PCGS MS70. This coin has an extremely low final mintage of 2,253.

This will probably be the last update for the week, so have a great weekend!

We're back with another round up of coin collecting news from around the internet! First, the 2010 Presidential Dollar Proof Set arrives, containing the first of the Abraham Lincoln Dollars. Also, another opinion on the Lincoln Cent redesign, Panama-Pacific $50 Gold, circulating coin shortage in the Philippines, nickel three cent piece values, pedigrees and numismatics, transition to the Euro, branch mint proof Morgan Dollar, and notable auctions. On to the links...

The 2010 Presidential $1 Proof Set containing the 2010 Proof Abraham Lincoln Presidential Dollar arrives. Also, a second Lincoln coin from a foreign country.

More mainstream coverage of the Lincoln Cent redesign. This article is not too enthusiastic about the change, and also suggests that Memorial Cents might be saved from circulation similar to Wheat Cents.

A post from the Heritage Blog on the Panama-Pacific Exposition $50 Gold Piece. Their upcoming auction in Fort Worth, TX will feature seven of the low mintage commemorative coins.

I am glad to see Mike Ellis posting again on his blog. His new post provides a list of some of his upcoming speaking and teaching engagements.

An article about the "artificial shortage" of circulating coins in the Philippines. Despite having the highest per capita number of coins in Asia, apparently very few are circulating.

Coin Values Online examines the sources of demand and availability for the copper nickel 3 cent coin, along with general trends for price levels.

An explanation of pedigrees and why they are important in numismatics, along with the collections that are the most important for pedigree purposes.

If EU finance ministers grant permission for Estonia to adopt the Euro at their July 6 meeting, the Bank of Estonia will have the Finnish Mint begin producing their Euro coins the next day.

Separately, Romania also recently issued a press release stating that as many as 300 trucks with Euro bank notes and coins would travel tot he country by 2012.

More information on the 1879-O branch mint proof Morgan Dollar that will be offered at the Bowers and Merena auction on March 5.

And now for some notable auctions. Already available, the 2010 Presidential Dollar Proof Set graded NGC PF 70 Ultra Cameo.

The full four coin set of 1997 Jackie Robinson Gold and Silver Commemorative Coins, all graded NGC MS 70 or PF 70 Ultra Cameo. This includes the low mintage uncirculated $5 gold coin.

Last, a 1998 Lincoln Cent 2 planchet bonded pair. The coin is authenticated by NGC and graded MS 66 RD.

That's it for this update. Have a great day!

Separately, here is some local coverage of the Moravia ceremony, which had close to 1,000 attendees.

A very unflattering account of the new 2010 Lincoln Penny design from Fast Company. The author also describes the State Quarter designs as "embarrassing collages of tourism-board clip art" and the 2009 Lincoln Cent designs as "cartoony tableaus."

A great examination of the Special Mint Sets issued by the US Mint from 1965 to 1967. The image used for today's update is a 1965 SMS Kennedy Half Dollar from my collection.

Three rarities will highlight Bowers and Merena's sale at the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Baltimore on March 2-6. The rarities includes a 1901-S Barber Quarter graded PCGS MS68, a branch mint proof 1879-O Morgan Dollar, and a 1915-S Panama-Pacific $50 Round graded PCGS MS66.

An illustrated explanation of the three types of luster found on US gold coins.

And now for some notable auctions. First, an interesting product offering by the US Mint in 2003. It's called the Legacies of Freedom Set and contains one American Silver Eagle and one Britannia Silver 2£ coin from the UK.

Next, the 1997-W Platinum Eagle 4 Coin Proof Set in original packaging. This was the first year of issue for the American Platinum Eagle.

Last, an NGC multi-coin slab highlighting the different Wisconsin Quarter Extra Leaf Varieties. The three MS66 graded coins include one regular version, one "extra leaf high", and one "extra leaf low."

That wraps up another week. Have a pleasant weekend!

We're back to bring you another round up of coin collecting new and articles from all over the internet. First, the latest sales report for US Mint numismatic coins shows a big opening for the new Presidential Dollar Proof Set. Also, 2010 Boy Scouts Silver Dollars, a mis-dated Zachary Taylor Dollar is certified by NGC, Canadian coins and the Olympics, the 1895 Morgan Dollar, error coins, a few articles related to gold, and notable auctions. On to the links...

The latest US Mint sales report comes two weeks after the previous report, as Mint headquarters was closed for much of last week. The report shows huge opening sales for the 2010 Presidential Dollar Proof Set.

More from Coin Update News
Previewing 2010 Boy Scouts Silver Dollar Coins

The Millard Fillmore Presidential Dollar will be released into circulation tomorrow. On the same date, the US Mint will begin sales of 25-coin rolls from the Philadelphia or Denver Mint.

NGC has certified a Zachary Taylor Presidential Dollar dated "2010-D." (The coin should be dated 2009.) This represents the first time that the wrong date has been found on an edge lettered US dollar. The coin was found in a box of Direct Ship rolls ordered from the US Mint.

An interesting account of Canadian coins and currency from someone visiting the country for the Olympics. From the "loonie" to the "toonie" to the $10 bill.

Another story related to the Olympics. The Royal Canadian Mint offered a gold-plated commemorative medallion and gold nugget to celebrate their country's first Olympic gold medal on home soil. People waited up to two hours to purchase the medallion and nugget for $24.95.

On CoinLink, an investigation of the "phantom" 1895 Morgan Dollar. Although the coin had a reported mintage of 12,000 coins, not a single business strike has ever surfaced.

Dave Harper provides his thoughts on error coins. Here's a passage that sums up his main point: "The errors that stand the test of time tend to be immediately identifiable by all, have an essentially defined number that exist, an explanation as to how they were produced in a manner that is replicated over and over again in the same way and they can be seen with the naked eye."

A bill proposed in South Carolina is attempting to ban Federal Reserve Notes in favor of using silver and gold coins.

If you are in the area, there is an exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center entitled Gold. The exhibit includes the 26-pound Boot of Cortez, an entire room plated with gold, and even an Oscar.

And now for some notable auctions. First, one of my favorite Olympic themed US coins, the 2002-W Salt Lake City Olympics $5 Gold graded NGC MS 70.

Available before the official release date, here is a $1,000 Box of 2010-D Millard Fillmore Presidential Dollars.

Last, the 2008-W $50 Gold Buffalo NGC MS 70. This is the lower mintage collectible version with the "W" mint mark- even though auction title states "bullion."

That wraps up another update. Have a great evening!

We have another fresh round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the web! First, a report from the 2010 Lincoln Cent launch ceremony held late last week. Also, pricing for 2010 US Commemoratives, coins released into circulation with the country name misspelled, differentiating errors and varieties, letter from the NGC Chairman, a coin-related ethical question, United States Pattern Coins, and notable auctions. On to the links...

From Coin Update News, a first hand account of the 2010 Lincoln Cent Launch Ceremony and Coin Exchange.

An article on the ceremony from a Springfield, Illinois newspaper. The article opens with someone claiming to have made $200,000 from last year's Lincoln ceremonies!?!

The pricing for the US Mint's 2010 Commemorative Coins was revealed. The price levels represent an increase of $2 from last year, likely driven by the higher price of silver.

The general manager and several employees of the Chilean Mint lost their jobs after releasing thousands of coins misspelling the country's name as "Chiie". Oddly, the coins circulated for a year before anyone noticed the mistake.

Is it an error coin or a variety? Here is how Ken Potter differentiates between errors and varieties.

A letter from Mark Salzberg, the Chairman of NGC. In the annual letter to NGC submitters, he recaps some of the highlights of 2009 and mentions that NGC is days away from certifying their 20 millionth coin.

An ethical question related to an Indian Head Penny in the take-a-penny leave-a-penny cup.

If you want a laugh, look at the four prizes for this contest promotion.

An excellent article on United States Pattern coins republished on CoinLink. It briefly covers the history of patterns and discusses articles and reference books on the subject.

And now for some notable auctions. First, going with one of today's stories, here are the coins from Chile with the country misspelled as "Chiie".

These sets used to sell for huge prices, but seem to have settled down lately. Here is a complete run of the 2007-2008 Presidential Dollar Historical Signature Sets.

Last, a Peace Dollar with original rainbow toning on the reverse of the coin. Natural, colorful toning is very infrequent for the series.

That's wraps up today's update. Have a great President's Day!

We have another round up of coin collecting news and articles from around the internet! First, an examination of the prices and trends for 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins. Also, the DC area 2010 Lincoln Cent exchanges were canceled, displaying First Day Coin Covers, some tidbits from the PCGS earnings call, interview with Mike Byers, the 20th Century Gold Coin Club, previewing Stack's Baltimore auction, and notable auctions. On to the links...

Mint News Blog examines 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle prices. One of the surprising aspects- coins graded NGC MS 70 PL have been selling for $4,500 each.

Federal agencies in Washington DC have been closed for the past four days. This led to the cancellation of the planned DC area coin exchanges for the 2010 Lincoln Cent.

The second part of the article series on First Day Coin Covers. This one examines storage and display options for FDCC's.

PCGS reported their quarterly financial results earlier this week. Here is the transcript of the earnings call. Some interesting tidbits related to coins: Coin revenues increased by 34%, driven by increased revenues from the grading and authentication of modern coins. The recently relaunched CoinFacts has approximately 2,100 paying subscribers. PCGS keeps dropping clues about the big upcoming announcement in March, although no information is provided.

An interview with Mike Byers, the author of the book World's Greatest Mint Errors.

A report from a meeting of the 20th Century Gold Club. Speakers included David Hall, John Albanese, and John Dannreuther.

An account of the World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany by Dave Harper, which focuses on the human side of the hobby.

At the Long Beach Expo, a 1943-S Bronze Lincoln Cent sold for $207,000. This Numismatic News article calls it "one of the best circulation finds ever."

A preview of Stack's March 2 and 3 auction in Baltimore, which will include items from the Eliasberg and Krause collections.

And now for some notable auctions. First, one of the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coins graded NGC MS 70 PL currently listed for auction with no reserve.

A very interesting piece of memorabilia related to GSA Morgan Dollars. It's an original press kit from 1974 that was sent to newspapers around the country. the auction includes a lengthy description of the kit and many photos.

Last, a visually appealing 11 cent coin - that's a 1990 Lincoln cent stuck on a Roosevelt Dime. Strong details of each denomination are present.

That wraps up another update!
